This ISBN is not a Study Guide “When we approach God humbly and bow down before Him, we put ourselves in a position to hear from Him.” Are you longing to hear God’s voice, but feeling disconnected? God wants to speak directly to each of His beloved children, not to just a few “spiritual elite.” Priscilla Shirer looks at God’s call to Samuel and uncovers six characteristics essential for hearing from Her warmth and honesty, combined with a wealth of practical help, will inspire you to cultivate these traits in your own life. By doing so, you will prepare yourself to draw closer to Him and to hear His voice more clearly.
Priscilla Shirer is a wife and a mom first. But put a Bible in her hand and a message in her heart and you’ll see why thousands flock to her conferences and dive into her Bible study series’ and books each year.
A graduate of Dallas Theological Seminary, Priscilla holds a Master’s degree in Biblical Studies and considers it a privilege to serve believers from every denomination and culture by helping them to know the truths of Scripture intellectually and encouraging them to experience these truths practically by the power of the Holy Spirit.
In addition to Priscilla’s participation in many church and para-church conferences across the globe each year, Going Beyond Ministries hosts AWAKEN – an outreach event in their hometown designed to encourage and mobilize women locally. This free gathering brings together thousands of women from different denominations and backgrounds several times a year in an effort to stir revival.
Going Beyond Ministries also equips believers through books and Bible study resources. Priscilla has authored over a dozen video driven studies for women and teens on a myriad of Biblical characters and topics including Jonah, Gideon, the Exodus, discerning God’s voice, The Armor of God.
Her books include Discerning the Voice of God, God is Able, and two New York Times Bestsellers – The Resolution for Women and Fervent: A Woman’s Battle Plan for Serious, Specific and Strategic Prayer, which was named the 2016 Christian Book of the Year. Her latest offering is a 365-day devotional called Awaken: 90 Days with the God Who Speaks. In 2016, Priscilla ventured into the world of children’s publishing with The Prince Warriors, a fiction 4-book series and accompanying 365-day devotional (Unseen) designed to equip tween boys and girls for victory in spiritual warfare.
Priscilla has been married to Jerry for 20 years. Between studying and writing, she spends most of her time cleaning up after (and trying to satisfy the appetites of) their three growing boys – Jackson, Jerry Jr. and Jude.
"He Speaks to Me" is an excellent God-focused and Scripture-focused book. If you're interested in hearing from God, I'd recommend this book to get you prepared to hear from God and "Listening For God" by Marilyn Hontz to help you with practical ways to hear His voice and guidance.
Priscilla Shirer used the story of when Samuel heard God call to him as a boy as the frame for the points she made, then she explored what the rest of Scripture had to say. She used examples from the Bible and from her life to illustrate her points.
The book was easy-to-understand and had a lot of good, Biblical insights. While the author was writing this to a female audience (she referred to the reader as "sister"), the information does apply to men, too. I'd highly recommend this book to anyone who feels disconnected or distant from God.
Just finished this Bible study taught by Priscilla Shirer. I was the facilitator of the group and although it had a rough start for us, we figured out what worked for us and moved forward. We view her video teaching each week, after reading through the chapter in the workbook and answering the questions. We would immediately discuss her teaching and it was more impactful to us this way vs watching the video and then doing the week's lessons.
It was great how she took one verse and found six (6) application from that one verse. She gave us clearer insight how to sit and be still before the Lord so that we knew it was He who was speaking to us. We all need to be like Samuel, yes indeed.
This book is written in an easy conversational style, but it is NOT theological in any way. The book uses boy Samuel as a springboard but rarely stays on point and often 'spiritualizes' things to make a point rather than letting scripture speak for itself. She spends most of the book using her own wealthy life as an example of how to 'hear God'. You are not Samuel. God does not 'talk' to us audibly. We have the completed canon of scripture and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.
A good book that reminds us to position ourselves to hear from God, to stop and listen for Him. Priscilla's honest reflection of herself is very inspiring to me. It shows that I am human with human struggles and I am not alone in those struggles. I will give thanks and praise God even when He is silent. I will be still more and trust Him more.
This book is full of Scripture. Unfortunately, the author often uses descriptive (narrative) passages as if they were prescriptive. This can be dangerous and warrants a strong caution of this book.
This review is for the book edition, since I have already read the workbook. There's a lot that is repeated from the workbook and the videos, but the questions at the end of each chapter still made me think. The prayers were a nice addition too. I would say the book gives you a different perspective on the same subject plus is easier to work on without the pressure of finishing a 5-day study guide plan each week.
I’m pretty sure this was her first book. Compared to her Armor Bible Study I recently did, this book is subpar, but compared to other devotionals, it is well-written. It doesn’t have the best flow but her points are still good and thought provoking. Her personal examples and antidotes don’t flow or work as effectively as well as they do in her more recent writ tings. I would say, read her more recent studies.
I read this book as a Daily devotional. I loved how it had questions at the end of each chapter. My theology is a little different then the authors and there was one chapter I did not agree with the author or questioned her thoughts on certain things however overall I felt it was a good tool to help me grow in my prayer life.
Great Bible study on Eli and Samuel, giving some solid points taken from that Story to base our own practice of Speaking to God and Listening for His answer. Will recommend this book to others and pass this copy on. Found my copy in a library book sale and it was a great buy for $1. The advice is worth its weight in gold. Lucinda at the Library
If you want real life examples with scriptures read this book!!! I like how the author is relates to her life and then gives us example. This book is perfect for anyone who is new to being a christian or even an expert christian. I like her style, some part were repetitive but i did learn a lot and it has prayers as well to help you feel connected with god and ask for jesus help and love.
I have always enjoyed the practicality of The author. This book was just what needed on my spiritual walk to get closet to God. I love the way she guides and encourages to be quiet, stop talking, and moving so that you can hear from Lord. He has a word and a plan for you.
All I can say is this: WOW! From reading this book and answering the questions at the end of each chapter, honestly, I have the answers I need to set myself up to hear from God more frequently, and more clearly.
I really found Priscilla’s verses on Samuel an awesome illustration and backdrop to the outline of this book! The content was good, of course, but not “deep” like I am accustomed to with Priscilla’s speaking.
I love that this is an easy read, yet full of so much wisdom to position ourselves to be closer to God. I enjoyed learning about her own lessons learned from her life experiences as well as applying these examples to scripture.
i liked "discerning the voice of God" better than this book. This was not as good teaching how to "hear" Gods message to you on a personal level, but it does have a lot of good things to learn in the book.
This book accompanies a video series--Priscilla brings to light some interesting perspectives and challenges readers of this workbook on how to have the correct posture, attitude and mindset on hearing God. I wrote lots of notes.
Really enjoyed this study and the lovely ladies that I got to know in our group! Very thought provoking, thought about things in new ways. Loved the 5 days/wk chapters, looked forward to that 15-20 mins each day 💕
This is a spiritual book every Christian must have do you will help you with How t o hear from God God, what to do? How do you do it? And everything in between?
This book was really good. I read it like a devotional and only did one chapter a day and l felt like I got way more out of it. I would recommend this book and also recommend that it be read slowly so that all the little gems and nuggets of wisdom hit harder.
enjoyed this study with my church ladies, plus a few...loved how my spiritual life vascillated during the semester, but the topics addressed stayed right with me. God is cool like that!
Read this with a Bible study group. Enjoyed Priscilla Shirer's video more than the book. But there were descent discussion questions to help guide the group to good discussions.
