What is most powerful about this special book, however, is its depiction of the love that made them so happy, and that made us all so sad when we lost them.

Diana & Dodi Een liefdesverhaal, geschreven door de butler van Dodi. Een verhaal van een persoon die het allemaal van dichtbij mee maakte. Dit boek stond al wat langer in de kast en het werd wel eens tijd het te lezen.

Rene Delorm kun je beter omschrijven als de persoonlijke verzorger en volgens het boek de vertrouweling van Dodi. Hij maakte Dodi mee in alle facetten van het leven, beter gezegd met de vrouwen in zijn leven. Volgens de auteur vrouwen die het niet om de persoon ging maar om het geld.. Rene Delorm maakt duidelijk dat dat met prinses Diana anders was… Dodi zou rust gevonden hebben bij de prinses en anders om ook… Toch heb ik grote twijfels over deze gedachtegang, Dodi was immers verloofd en zou trouwen, hij ontmoet Diana, verbreekt zijn verloving etc… Volgens het boek zou het een intens serieuze romance zijn tussen Diana en Dodi.. Ja waarschijnlijk wel van haar kant. Diana was al lange tijd op zoek naar warmte en liefde. Het antwoordt of dit een blijvende relatie zou zijn geweest zullen we helaas nooit weten.

Rene Delorm heeft de relatie onder zijn ogen zien opbloeien, er zal in zijn verhaal dan wel enige kern van waarheid zitten. Het boeiendste om te lezen waren de momenten dat Diana volledig haar zelf kon zijn. Het voelt fijn om te lezen dat ze zich op dat moment gelukkig voelde. Indrukwekkend is de belevenis van Rene Delorm ten tijde en na het ongeluk van Diana. Wat hij beschrijft, grijpt je naar de keel.

Wat kun je voor de rest vertellen van het boek? Ja dat het een inkijkje geeft in de relatie van Diana en Dodi, het afschuwelijke gedrag van de pers ( met name de fotografen), de fouten van het personeel van het hotel waar Diana en Dodi verbleven. Zoals met de verkeerde auto en chauffeur er vandoor gaan… Wat bezielde Dodi op dat moment? In ieder geval een vervelende samenloop van omstandigheden.

Voor de verder inhoud van het boek hou ik toch liever een slag om de arm daar ik het gevoel heb dat het mooier gemaakt is dan het werkelijk was… Ja een boek moet natuurlijk wel goed verkopen… Diana verkocht goed en dat doet ze nog steeds…Vele pikken daar graag met hun eigen verhaal een graantje van mee.

De echte Diana liefhebbers zullen het niet met mij eens zijn, die zullen zeggen dat Rene Delorm zijn verhaal juist wilde delen om de roddels die over Diana en Dodi de ronde deden of doen de kop in te drukken. Ik denk dat het dan ook beter is om de waarheid van dit boek in het midden te zoeken…Het is maar hoe er tegenaan kijkt …

Written shortly after their deaths this memoir by Dodi’s butler tells the story of a summer fling that ended in the tragic accident under the Pont de l’Alma.

Through his eyes we witness a summer of candlelight dinners, ocean swimming and beach walks. That summer however was plagued by the ever growing presence of the paparazzi - and as we know, the consequences were terrible.

He claims he wrote this book to debunk myths and falsehoods that arose during and after that summer. One of those myths he claims was real is the planned proposal. The truth, I believe, lies somewhere in the middle.

This book was written by Dodi Fayed’s butler – so you can imagine it’s slanted in his direction. It definitely romanticizes the relationship between Dodi and Diana – perhaps beyond the truth – but there are some good details here about Diana’s last weeks, including Rene's opinion about a potential marriage between Dodi and Diana.

I fancied a very light read so chose this! It is light weight but at least the tale comes from someone who spent all of his time with the couple in their last few months. As a consequence there is a lot of inside information and the sad ending is, even now, somewhat heart-wrenching.

Nice, polite, not much we didn't already know. He seemed enthralled by both of them and has nothing negative to say. Nice insider view, but how whitewashed was it? Still, his sadness at the events are palpable. He lost not just his job, but his friends that day.

This was an interesting read and gives a glimpse into the life Diana shared with Dodi. I enjoyed reading it.
