My other stand-alone novels are The Victory Garden, about land girls in WWI and Above the Bay of Angels, featuring a young woman who becomes chef for Queen Victoria. Series: * Constable Evan Mystery * Molly Murphy Mysteries * Her Royal Spyness Mysteries
After seeing a Facebook page with this authors name and book descriptions, I decided to check her books on Amazon.com. I read the reviews and thought I would enjoy this series. This series ble rd two of my favorite genres historical fiction and mysteries. Plus it has a strong female lead character. I met Molly Murphy in book 1 as she leaves Ireland to escape her family after she thinks she killed the Lord of her family home as he tried to rape her. She runs to Londan a d Meets Katherine and her young children who have tickets to come to America. The adventure begins. Each book has Molly living in NYC at the turn of the century, facing gangs, working in sweatshops, organizing labor unions, living independently and helping to do he murders. These books are so addicting that I recently purchased the next two in the series. Great summer books to read
The Molly Murphy series is a delightful treat for readers. My favorite genre is historical fiction. Rhys sets the FOR THE LOVE OF MIKE in early 20th century New York City contrasting the newly arrived immigrant with the upper crust as well as the Greenwich village bohemians who provide friendship and a home for Molly. The murder mystery/detective novel genre has not interested me in the past. However, Rhys melds the two genres seamlessly. One caper after another finds Molly cleverly escaping within an inch of her life and also solving mysteries as one of the first female private eyes. The social and political issues of the day also play a big part in the subject matter. This series includes 20 or so novels. I will be sampling them on and off like a box of delicious chocolates.
This is not the version I read but it is all that I found to choose from. The second book in the series by Rhys Bowen is well done and further adventures of the newly settled immigrant from Ireland trying to learn American ways and gain employment. Molly has taken a job with tough Cockney private investigator Paddy Riley, but her life turns upside down when she shows up at work one day to find Riley dead.
Book 1 ends with Molly, newly immigrated from Ireland to New York, helping to solve a mystery crime. She decided she would pursue a career in investigation. Conveniently this book begins with a murder of an investigator that she has recently met, so she takes over his cases.
Molly makes friends with a same sex couple, meets an egotistical playwright, and tries to thwart the assassination of President McKinley.
Simply written, but kept my interest throughout. Sets the stage for Book 3.
