Captain Jake Mercer and the crew of the Phoenix finally escape from Admiral Trajan's relentless pursuit, hoping for some much needed rest and supplies. But while in the Oberon system the 51st brigade decides to make its move against Captain Mercer in revenge for the murder of one of its soldiers. Jake must enlist the help of a local paramilitary organization to not only regain his ship, but also to fight off the Vikorhov Federation, one of Admiral Trajan's surrogates in the sector. And all the while Ben's mind is slowly re-written by the picobots, making him not only a danger to his enemies, but to his closest friends.
Into the Void, a novel of about 300 pages, is the 3rd episode of the 10 episode Pax Humana Saga.

Nick became a scientist so that he could build starships. Unfortunately, his ship is taking longer to build than he'd hoped, so fictional starships will have to do for now. When he's not adding to his starship collection, you can find him tweeting and facebooking about Nasa, science, space, SciFi, and quoting Star Trek II.
He lives in Alabama with his wife, 2 kids, and 3 motorcycles.
Note: This author also writes books under the name of Endi Webb
Good book, really good series. I like this author and try to read most of what he puts out. The only thing I can't figure out is why he publishes the very same types of sci fi novels using the same surname but different first name (unless it's brother?). Regardless, that's not really relevant. The content is and this is good space opera is that's your thing, so certainly recommended.
I would personally recommend all three book of the Pax Humana Saga.I have read hundreds of Sci Fi books in my lifetime, but never books that were loaded with so much action. So pls give them a try,you want regret it.
Ok, here goes my review. The story has some interesting aspects. We’ve just gotten out of a major foul up on the planet Destiny. We managed to save our ship, the USS Phoenix, by sending a kamikaze pilot into another ship destroying both the young pilot and the enemy vessel. Yet, here we hang in the same place trying to make some necessary repairs.
Captain Jake Mercer and his friends are in a whole lot of trouble. They keep getting into trouble no matter what they seem to do. They see a lot of action, that’s for sure. Even as they sit there, the Empire fleet comes back and begins hammering the Phoenix once more. By a stroke of luck, they manage to get their jump drive fully charged, or at least charged enough to jump to the gravity gate that will allow them to then jump into the Void.
They do that, jump into the Void, and also jump right into another major battle. Except this time, they have no idea who is shooting at who. Seems there are a lot of small ships firing at some big ones and the small ships aren’t doing too well. Then the big ship starts shooting at the Phoenix, so Jake figures he’ll fight back and hope he’s on the right side. Turns out he’s helping the planet Oberon which is where they hoped to stop and get some needed repairs and resupply.
Ok, so everything seems to have calmed down and maybe this crew can finally get a break. Ain’t going to happen.
If you like your science fiction fast pasted, with multiple plots going on, then here’s the book for you. It’s got enough stuff going on all at the same time to make your head spin.
One warning, if you have any kind of military background, you might want to throw this book through a window because it does become so frustrating at time. “Captain” Mercer is, in my opinion, a complete idiot and has no concept of security or he wouldn’t be in half the messes he puts his ship and crew. That’s my opinion for what it’s worth.
Still, read the book. I think you’ll enjoy it if you can get over grossly unmilitary activities of the crew.
The crew of the Phoenix seems to be leaping from one battle to the next, from one fight to the next, from one disaster to the next. But the Captain might have finally found an answer, the Void and a planet called ‘Oberon’. He has been told that to get there is very difficult, and it is beyond the Empire’s grasp. As usual, I don’t want to give away any spoilers, but there is a lot that happens in this book. The Phoenix and her battered crew flee the horrors of Destiny and head to Oberon and the Void, and hopefully a sanctuary. But when they reach the Void, they find many things. They find a new Ally, some long awaited help, a planet that doesn’t really want them, and an internal threat that may ultimately be the end of them. ‘Into the Void’ was brilliant, the only flaw was the cliff hanger ending! Again, as with Webb’s other books, there is a fantastic mix of exceptional Characters, clever Science and Technology and an intelligent, ongoing multi-threaded plot, with several sub-plots as well. Webb’s Characters continue to be the highlight of the book, as he delves into each of the inner core of his Main Characters to see what they are made of as they are pushed further and further. Added to this is the incredible technology that he uses (and there is just so much brilliant tech that he uses within his books!), as well as the science behind how things work, and this is also a rather fascinating read. Webb is highly intelligent with a background in science, and has done the research as well. This only adds to the story, giving it a real depth (as well as a couple of his characters who gain the benefit of his wisdom). This is another fantastic story by Webb, I can’t wait for the next part (Sons of Oberon), and shouldn’t be missed.
I felt that the first book in this series had some promise although already when I reviewed that one I was worried that it would turn into a never ending, being on the run, Fugitive / Battlestar Galactica type of story. Unfortunately this seems to be excactly the direction this series is taking.
The book plays out like a not too expensive TV-series. Our heroes fumble and stumble into one mess after another and their ship gets shot to pieces no matter where they go. That could still be a good story but I find Captain Mercer’s unprofessional behavior rather frustrating. He leaves one pickle just to clumsily walk into another rather obvious one. Actually, more than one. He has zero concept of military strategy, discipline or security. Especially the latter. A skilled captain would not constantly walk into the messes and obvious traps that Captain Mercer does.
This makes it difficult to want to relate to the lead character. He has little character that makes you want to follow him. Actually most of the characters in the book are fairly flat, uncharismatic and uninterresting. The story is quite a rollercoaster ride of action, sabotage, treason and various plot twists. Unfortunately I felt that the book did little to advance the main story arc.
What I hoped, after having read the first book, was that Captain Mercer would organize some resistance, gather a real fleet and then start to strike back against the Empire. However, now after the third book, he is still stumbling on his own feet and there appears to be no light at the end of the tunnel. I am afraid that I am starting to loose interrest in The Pax Humana Saga.
Into the Void starts off right where Chains of Destiny ends. The ship, Destiny, barely escaped with its crew and needs to pick up supplies and are headed into the Void, a place far and difficult to get to so as to not have the Empire on its tail. Destiny warps straight into a big fire fights and doesn't know who's who and who is firing at whom. Until they are shot at themselves, which leads to them being lead to the planet Oberon. It seems Captain Mercer is still getting himself into trouble. There's lots of fast paste action as the previous books.
Tremblay continues to do a great job with the narration!
One thing that disappointed me is that I thought this was a trilogy series. Turns out I was mistaken and the series is to continue with several books, so I didn't get the ending and wrap up I was looking for. It's entirely my fault, and it's a bummer because this one ends kind of with a cliffhanger. I waited over a year for this audio to be published, and I have no idea when the next book, yet alone the audio, will be out. I'll probably do the next one, when it comes out, but I'm not holding my breath since it took forever for this to get published.
Recommended as part of the series, but you could probably wait until the next one is out.
Dialogue is good. Hero characters are often portrayed as stupid in the plot lines. Dialogue is good. Hero characters are often portrayed as stupid the plot lines. Ties book too short and basically bait for a fourth book that should resolve conflicts raised in third. Almost seems like author had a deadline and submitted what he had available. Still, I will read the next couple of books in this series because author has a good writing style and have bought into overall plot.
I did not review the 1st two books, so I felt the need to review this one. If you action, deception, betrayal, and edge of your seat ride, then this series is for you. All3 books are excellent, and the only thing that sucks is waiting for the 4th book to be released.
Again I did not feel like this was a complete novel, instead these books feel like parts of a larger novel. I did enjoy what there was here, but this was like watching a weekly television show that had "to be continued..." at the end. The characters seem to be developing more, but also seem incomplete. They do not recognize situations as they are developing around them.
New worlds and adventures for our crew and captain to overcome
Fast paced continuation of the action from the first two episodes. New twists and turns to challenge our heroes and their new friends and enemies. Highly entertaining.
