Other reviewers have adequately addressed the scholarly content of this book, so I shall confine myself to a stylistic problem that none of them mentions. Perhaps it didn’t disturb them? It certainly did me; in fact, it drove me crazy.

And that is (if you will forgive me), that the author cannot make up his mind whether he spoke of Bach in the past or the present tense. For instance, on p. 38 we have:

Shelves: biography, music
Be prepared for a detailed discussion of Bach's voluminous work. This is written by a German musicologist, and while this is biography, it is not history. If you love music like I do, you'll find it fascinating. But it is still a challenging read.

This book is one of the few biographies out there on Bach. I got a lot out of this text. The author does a good job of juxtaposing Bach's musical achievement with his personal life and struggles. A great read for any Christian classical music fan

Martin Geck ist ein deutscher Musikwissenschaftler.

Martin Geck wuchs in einem evangelischen Pfarrhaus in Recklinghausen auf. Sein Vater Wilhelm (1892–1989) war Mitglied der Bekennenden Kirche, Pfarrer der Gustav-Adolf-Kirche in Recklinghausen und von 1949 bis 1961 Superintendent des Kirchenkreises Recklinghausen. Martin Geck legte 1955 am Gymnasium Petrinum in Recklinghausen das Abitur ab.
