I knew the story well. But, to actually get to read A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens for the first time in its entirety was wonderful. So well written and with such a beautiful message.
An enjoyable read on this 2nd day of Christmas. Another book I rescued from Granny and Papaw's. I really do love this story and the introduction explaining Dickens' purpose for writing it. The illustrations are lovely and it would be a good introduction for children. My only complaint is the editing. While the description says this is unabridged, the note under Scrooge's chin tells the reader it is in fact abridged. I found the abridgement to leave out some important information the reader needs for a better understanding of Scrooge. Having read the original many times maybe I missed the original text more than a child who hasn't yet read the unabridged version. On that I can't be certain. I read this after watching the Jim Carrey version, which was a very nice way to experience different adaptations. One could have a entire Christmas Carol day enjoying all the tellings and retellings.
"Old Marley was as dead as a door-nail. Mind! I don't mean to say that I know, of my own knowledge, what there is particularly dead about a door nail. I might have been inclined, myself, to regard a coffin-mail as the deadest piece of iron-monger in the trade. But the wisdom of our ancestors is in the simile; and my unhallowed hands shall not disturb it, or the Country's done for."
