All six books from the One man and His Dog Cozy Mystery series in one perfect box set. Starting with the first book, Hey Diddle Diddle, the Runaway Riddle and including Ramsay and the Smuggling Ring, Dark Deeds on a White Christmas, A Missing Manuscript and Murder, Gold, Greed, and a Hidden Hoard, and wrapping up the set with Murder at a Musical Retreat.
A deceptively easygoing series - you will fall in love with the warm characters, good plot, and the atmosphere of the Dales. The suspense is always there, as retired detective Ramsay enjoys the part-time investigations with his dog Bracken. Even walks on the moors can bring enlightenment. I was pulled right along with Ramsay as he uncovers clues and plots from lost people to smugglers. You won't regret the bundle, since starting at the beginning is beneficial to understanding the characters. I definitely recommend these stories.
If you love cozy mysteries, this delightful six-book collection is an absolute treat. While the genre often centers on older, genteel ladies, P. C. James gives us something refreshingly different: retired Inspector Tom Ramsay — still sharp, capable, and quietly determined — alongside his remarkably intelligent border collie, Bracken.
Set in the charming countryside of 1960s England, these stories follow Ramsay as he attempts retirement, only to find his passion for detective work impossible to abandon. From kidnappings and smugglers to suspicious deaths and baffling crimes, he soon becomes the quiet hero small towns rely upon. With Bracken and a growing circle of helpful friends, Ramsay navigates clever clues and increasingly dangerous situations.
I planned to read just one… but each mystery was so engaging, I couldn’t stop. Add in quirky locals, atmospheric villages, and gentle humor, and you have a thoroughly charming, page-turning cozy series that’s both comforting and suspenseful.
I read these stories a long time ago, and didn't remember much, which is nice for a re-read! I liked the plots a lot, but didn't care for the strident personalities of the females Ramsay ended up working with. Too "in your face" trying to be important. Ick. Anyway, I enjoyed the developing relationship with Ramsay and the Inspector, warming up over the 6 books. Definitely a good read over all.
A seemingly simple collection of cozy mysteries. The plots are interesting; the locations are beautifully described and the characters (including the dog!) are well defined. A great cozy mystery series.
