Wall Street Journal & USA Today bestselling author Emma Slate writes romance with heart and heat.
Called “the dialogue queen” by her college playwriting professor, Emma writes love stories that range from romance-for-your-pants to action-flicks-for-chicks.
When she isn’t writing, she’s usually curled up under a heating blanket with a steamy romance novel and her two beagles—unless her outdoorsy husband can convince her to go on a hike.
First all thank you so much Emma for the opportunity to be an ARC reader for Lavender Lake!! Now on to the review!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ **A Small-Town Romance That Had Me Hooked From Page One!**
*Lavender Lake* by Emma Slate is an absolute gem of a small-town romance—sweet, steamy, emotional, and completely addictive. Set in the charming town of Huckleberry Hills, the story follows 23-year-old Salem as she returns home after her father’s accident, only to find her life spiraling into a whirlwind of secrets, second chances, and unexpected love.
What starts as a one-night stand during a flight layover quickly becomes so much more when Salem discovers that the mysterious, irresistible man she spent the night with is actually her twin sister’s fiancé’s best friend, Cas Bowman. The chemistry between them is electric from the start, and their secret relationship adds the perfect amount of tension and excitement. Emma Slate captures that delicious forbidden-romance feeling flawlessly.
The plot takes twists I didn’t see coming—including a shocking surprise that completely changes the couple’s future. Salem and Cas decide to keep their news quiet until after the wedding, but small towns have long memories and loud mouths. When an old high school nemesis exposes their secret, it leads to an emotional confrontation and a heartbreaking rift between Cas and his best friend. The reconciliation that follows is heartfelt and beautifully written.
Just when it seems like Salem and Cas might finally catch a break, a terrifying brush fire puts everything at risk. The scenes surrounding Salem’s near-death experience had me genuinely breathless. And when Cas proposes after her recovery? Pure perfection. It’s the kind of satisfying, full-circle moment that makes romance readers swoon.
Emma Slate delivers a story full of heat, heart, and unforgettable characters. *Lavender Lake* is everything I want in a contemporary romance—family drama, small-town charm, real emotional stakes, and a love story worth rooting for. I couldn’t put it down.
**Highly recommend for anyone who loves romance with depth, surprise, and a perfectly happy ending.** 💜📚

Thank you Emma Slate for the chance to read this ARC!
This series is top tier. The first book in this series, Huckleberry Hill, does such a wonderful job building the ‘small town’ vibes that are at the center of these books.
The story continues with Hadley’s wild child twin sister Salem. Salem is a force of nature that has deep rooted trauma that finally reaches its limit. We know from book one that she has been avoiding coming home from her fast-paced New York life. But when a life changing accident involving her dad takes place, Salem has no choice but to come home and face her ghosts.
I love how serendipitous Salem’s meeting is with Cas. They are both wandering souls that finally find home in each other. Cas is really the perfect counterpart for Salem. He knows exactly what she needs, send knows how to calm her tumultuous emotions. I felt like they really healed each other, and helped each other work through what was holding them down. It also was such an amazing bonus that we got to see so much of Hadley and Declan, and see how the sisters really interact with each other when they are together in person. I loved this book so much and cannot wait for the next one!!
Could not put this book down. This is becoming one of my favourite cowboy series and will be on my reread list. You have got a one night stand, turn forbidden romance, with meddling family and friends who will always be there. Plus a motorbike riding cowboy. In this book it is the FMC that struggles with her feelings due to her past and she has to fight and overcome her own mind and it is down to a couple of turns and events that help her get her head straight. Emma writes in a way that just pulls you in and you are left wanting more. The first book I read from her was Wreck and Ruin and I have never been disappointed by anything I have read. The only criticism I have is that ending made me want the next book now!
Oki now that I got that out of the way. Let's talk Lavender Lake. First, I want to give a huge thank you to Emma Slate herself for letting me be an ARC for this amazing book. I have now read 10 Slate books, and I can say with full confidence not a single one has disappointed me and especially not this one. If you love banter, broody men, spunky spicy woman, and found family this is the book for you. I personally would say the banter is better than Lights Out and Caught Up, and the spice is spicing. I felt like a hormonal teenage girl the whole time reading this book smiling and kicking my feet and of course the occasional beet red blush across my cheeks. This book made me feel all sorts of feelings from happy for the characters, to angry with the characters, and being able to relate to the sad bits it's all woven together so beautifully. If you haven't read any of Emma Slates books yet go do it right now, get off this page and go do I'm so serious I promise you won't regret it.
Salem is your misunderstood girl who lost the one person she ever truly felt safe with, who turned into a fiercely protective and sassy woman who gives everyone a run for their money. Until one day a man comes into her life. A man who can handle her attitude and isn't scared to throw her over his shoulder if and when be. When no one else gets Salem or hears her screaming for help here comes Cas who with one look at Salem has her figured out. Her Knight in shining armor or in this case a crazy bull rider who gets a thrill out of taming a wild beast. No matter how hard they try to stay away to protect those around them, they just seem to keep ending up together.
Emma Slate has become one of my favorite modern romance writers. She is the only one who has been able to write insta love stories that don’t make me want to barf. (Tessa Bailey, take note)
Her male characters are top tier, she writes bad ass female characters and really creates a whole world with fully developed characters from the main ones to even the smallest parts.
I just can’t get enough. Already waiting on pins and needles for the next in the series. Like I need a whole book on Muddy alone pls.
I was very excited to receive my first ARC and this book did not disappoint! 4/5⭐️, 3/5🌶️ A cowboy romance at its finest. The banter, the sass, the tension - all made for a quick, fun read. I enjoyed Hadley and Declan’s story in book 1, but Salem and Cas were another level. Salem’s bullish personality was super funny and relatable, and the way Cas was so patient made me swoon 🥰. Looking forward to Poet’s story next!
Oh, I am really enjoying this series. I love that there is no misunderstanding.-why-don't-you-just-talk-to-each-other nonsense. I love the great friendships. I love the town. Good book. I can't wait for the next one.
3.75⭐️ | 3🌶 Salem's book yay! I loved seeing more of her character and development throughout her own story. Very sweet dynamic between her and Cas. Thank you to the author for this arc
ARC provided by the author, thank you so much. Like I've mentioned I'm a bit behind on my ARC reading and Lavender Lake by @emmaslateauthor is such a book. It's the second book in Saddles and spurs series. This book is about Salem who returns home partly because of her twin sisters upcoming wedding but mostly because their dad is in the hospital for a brain injury. On the layover between New York and Huckleberry Hill she meets a stranger in a bar, they hook up and she sneaks out in the morning. When she gets to the plane home, the man from the night before sits next to her. After a short conversation with disastrous outcome it's revealed that Bowman is a famous bull rider and the Best man for her sisters wedding. I loved this book, Bowman was hot and so understanding when Salem's emotions about everything from her dad in the hospital and the revelation that he has a girlfriend to just being back at the ranch overwhelms her and when she is fighting the attraction towards Bowman he is steadfast.
I LOVED this book. Salem and Cas were so perfect for each other!
Salem belongs to the world, always wanting to discover new places and chase new adventures. Cas is loyal, charismatic, and like Salem, he also loves new places and new experiences — but what he longs for most is a place to call home and the chance to build his own family.
I absolutely loved Salem and Cas. They were exactly what the other needed, and even though their relationship is a little unconventional, they worked really well together. I also loved that they learned the hardest parts of each other’s lives first and, by the end, chose the simpler things.
Even though I enjoyed this book, I felt Hadley and Declan were a big part of it too. Sometimes it didn’t even feel like it was Salem’s book because so many scenes revolved around Hadley and Declan or their feelings. And Declan and Hadley meddling in Salem and Cas’s lives honestly pissed me off.
I also felt like Salem’s story was slightly incomplete. We learn a lot about her relationship with her deceased mother, but I never really understood why she and her father weren’t on speaking terms. And I would’ve loved to see more of her and Jane actually getting to know each other.
But overall, this was a really great book, and I can’t wait for what’s next in this series. Thank you so much to the author for the opportunity to read this book beforehand.
Oh Salem I just love her. we meet Salem in Huckleberry Hill with her been Hadley's twin. She is the black sheep if the family and isn't a free spirit and just getting her life on the right track. What she didnt expect is the sexy bull rider that she had a ONS with and it now sat next to her on a plane is actually her soon to be brother in laws best friend and things have just got a lot more complicated and secrets are about to come to light. Her family's Ranch and small town has never been where Salem wanted to be but now it Cas staying there to help out Salem is ready to leave her New York life behind and settle down and be the person she didn't think she could be. Cas is willing to give up the circuit and been there with Salem he finally has the family he's never had before. I love how much Cas matched Salems energy, her completely understood her and just got her vibe.
Lavender Lake is easily becoming one of my favorites in the Saddles & Spur series.
It has some of my absolute comfort tropes — accidental pregnancy, small-town life, ranch setting, a bull-rider MMC — and the author delivered them so beautifully.
Salem and Bowman’s connection felt natural and deeply emotional. I especially loved how the author portrayed Salem’s personal struggles with so much care, and how Bowman consistently met her where she was. Their dynamic was tender, steady, and so easy to root for.
Muddy was another standout for me — such a warm, grounding presence. And the side characters genuinely added to the story instead of overshadowing it.
This is a solid 4.5-star read, and I definitely recommend it. Thank you to the author for this ARC.
i feel like i didn’t connect with this one as much as the first one but still loved it and had so much fun. i was so happy to be back in huckleberry hill, and visit all of the incredible characters again. i really love salem, she’s such a complex character and has many flaws yet so relatable. this book had me in all my emotions, this one felt a bit more character focused than romance focused but i honestly really love that. and don’t get me wrong i loved the romance (what can i say, i love small towns and accidental pregnancy). emma slate’s writing is so addictive and easy to binge. i can’t wait for the next installments!!
Oh. My. Gosh. This book. First, I want to thank Emma Slate for allowing me to be an ARC reader for this book! I’m so honored! Wow. This story had me hooked from the first page. Salem and Cas’s story had me feeling all the feels. I laughed out loud at their banter, cried at the touching and painful moments, and was breathless with anticipation through the twists and turns with them. Emma Slate has this beautiful way of writing such complex characters and emotions that you truly feel everything right along with them. I’m so in love with this series and the stunning characters in it. I cannot wait for the next book!
Wow! I love Salem, she is complex, has reasons for her actions, and misunderstood. Cas sees Salem, he is not afraid to push back. He is one tough bull rider.
Both our main characters are loners, but together they melt the kindle! Cass sees that Salem is struggling and changes his rodeos to follow her circuit, swoon. Together they work through the pasts. Lots of emotions run through this story, but each is necessary to move the story forward.
I am ready for the next book!
Thank you to the Author for the advanced copy; this is my voluntary review.
I received this book as an ARC for an honest review.
Once again Emma blew my mind! I absolutely loved Cas and Salem’s story. I love how grumpy Salem was and by the end I loved out she worked through everything. And of course how big of a simp Cas was ;)
Always love a good Emma Slate romance! Thanks again for writing amazing books!
Very excited to receive this ARC from one of my favorite authors. If there is one thing Emma Slate does exceptionally well it is a well timed age joke that always makes me laugh out loud.
I loved Salem and Cas story of finding where they belong and learning not to mute your self to fit in and that the right person will love you just the way you are. Looking forward to poets story next.
Thank you Emma Slate for the opportunity to ARC read again for you!! 💜
🪻 ARC REVIEW 🪻 • Lavender Lake by Emma Slate • “But that could change. At any moment. Just like life.” • I’ve been hanging on the edge of my seat since I finished Huckleberry Hill and the author left me on a cliff hanger and in tears over a fictional character!!! • This book was hard for me to read because I related so much to the FMC emotionally. To me it was almost healing in a way. I am a big mood reader so I don’t pick up cowboy romances frequently, but when Emma Slate drops a book? I jump on it very quickly. She writes these stories absolutely beautifully. The amount of plot to spice ratio is done perfectly. • This small town cowboy romance is the second book in the Saddles & Spurs Series, book 2 to Huckleberry Hill. You have to read the first book before reading the second to understand what is happening to the fullest extent. I loved the first book so much, but with the second i feel like anyone that reads will be so much more emotionally connected to Salem. Not to mention every girl wants a girl friend group like Salem and her sister, with the amount of support they have. Then you have Cas, the MMC. He really is the perfect golden retriever man but also knows exactly how to handle Salem when she is having a emotional meltdown or when she just is blowing up and does not know how to handle her emotions at all. He literally handles it all. • 📚rating: 5/5 ⭐️ • Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️ • 📚Tropes: Biker / bull rider One night stand Age gap Surprise pregnancy • PUBLISH DATE DECEMBER 1, 2025 PRINT LENGTH: 378 PAGES

I love Emma's books and I always try to read them between books that are darker since it always makes me smile. I loved returning to this town and really enjoyed the history. I can't wait for Poet's book to come out. Will it be the one with the mustache or the one with the tattoos...
My initial thoughts are like 2.5? I might give it higher…I dunno I just wanted like more of something and the less of something else? I really hated how most of the people in salems life treated and talked about her. She needed more people in her corner…
*ARC Review* Returning to Lavender Lake after Huckleberry Hill, and what a ride?! Salem is the witty and original coming home after leaving her home town the minute she and her twin graduated high school. She is building a life in New York when she received a call to return home due to her father being severely injured, and she puts it all on hold.
Returning home, she has an interesting interlude the night before her flight to Boise with a stranger, who just happens to be someone also traveling to Lavender Lake. Sitting with him during the flight, they figure out who the other is (he is her sister’s fiancé’s best man, Bowman) and the banter is wonderful! Landing in Boise, we see a familiar face from the Tarnished Angels.
Salem and Bowman meet Hadley and Declan for their ride home, where Declan is surprised by Bowman’s early visit (the wedding is still 3 weeks away). Going straight to the hospital, the girls go in to visit their father with their grandma Muddy. Their visit is short and makes Salem question what the outcome will be.
Bowman and Salem head out of the hospital and he gets to show her his caveman tendencies. Taking Salem through town to first get her food - poutine - they run into familiar townsfolk from Hadley’s story. She is loved by the town just her sister, but with caution.
Upon returning home, she visits with those around her and her sister. Poet and Wyn are brought up to speed via FaceTime, and are excited to visit for the wedding.
She shows her big emotions for everything that she does, she doesn’t shrink from them or lessen her response to anything that comes her way. However, she is confronted with the reasons she left, the loss of her mom and her nomadic spirit, which is something that she had in common with her mom. The rawness of her emotions is felt through the page and Bowman is the one that she unintentionally turns to.
Their relationship grows from secrecy to something very strong, within weeks. He falls first and stronger, but then she has a realization that he is what she wants, even with their differences in their living situations.
Salem does wind up pregnant and after the initial shock, is ready to change everything. With her big emotions and reactions, she asks that their relationship stays quiet until after the wedding. Trying to keep it quiet so her sister can have her day, but these Powell women, push for her to admit it, both Muddy and Hadley know before she says anything. And the secret is out because of old dramas and a petty former classmate.
The wedding is beautifully set up, ruined, then more to celebrate with the ones they love.
Salem’s story brings joy, excitement, rawness, but with it comes tears, fears, and a fire. Her beautiful story ends happily - and another biker cowboy is going to be stuck with critter in their bed.

Lavender Lake is book two in the Saddles & Spurs series and is the story of Salem and Cas. This is a small town, reverse grumpy/sunshine, age gap, secret relationship, accidental pregnancy romance.
Salem is known to be handful and a lot on any given day but as she travels home when her father is injured, she meets a stranger at the hotel and they share an explosive night together. No name, no chance of seeing him again, until he sits down next to her on her flight and she realizes he is the best man in her twin sister's wedding.
Cas is a pro bull rider and heading to Huckleberry Hill for his best friend's wedding, except he decides to go a couple weeks early and ends up meeting a beautiful woman at the hotel and they spend an amazing night together but she sneaks out before he can get her name. As fate steps in, he is seated next to his mystery woman on his flight and learns that she is the sister of the bride of the wedding he is in.
Salem and Cas try their hardest to avoid one another but their connection is too strong and as emotions fly, Cas is able to ground Salem in a way no one has ever been able to. While Salem's dad recovers, Cas helps her navigate her feelings about being back in her hometown and all the changes happening around her. As the weeks fly by, Cas and Salem can't help but gravitate towards one another and as their emotional connection deepens, Salem realizes that she is late and freaks out when she learns she is pregnant and pushes Cas away. Not one to back down, Cas pushes Salem for answers and when she tells him she is having his baby, he surprises her and is there for her in a way no one has ever been.
This book started off strong with Cas and Salem's meeting and went full tilt from there. There was so much emotion and connection between Cas and Salem from the very start and I enjoyed how Cas just understood Salem and knew exactly what she needed. Their passion, friendship and chemistry was so powerful and it translated in their actions toward each other and how they showed everyone their love. Salem has had a rough time since her mother's passing and coming home and coming to terms with the feelings she had been avoiding allowed her to feel the love Cas had for her and what he was willing to do and become to be there for her and their baby. I also enjoyed how Salem and her dad were able to mend their relationship and find peace after so many years of upheaval.
The cast of characters is phenomenal and Muddy is just a gem we should all treasure. If you are looking for an entertaining, banter filled, sweet/spicy love story between a bratty FMC and a sturdy bull rider then this is a perfect book for you. I received an advanced copy of this book and am leaving an honest review as a show of my appreciation.
Salem has always led with her emotions. She is impulsive and tends to act without thinking of the consequences, something that only intensified after her mother died years ago. That is why, as soon as she turned eighteen, she ran away from her home in Idaho and moved to New York with no intention of ever going back. It was the only way she knew how to deal with her grief.
When her father has an accident and ends up in the hospital, Salem is forced to return to Elk Ridge and confront all the messy feelings that being home brings up. What she does not expect is that on her flight home she will meet a man who will turn her life upside down.
Cas Bowman is a famous bull rider who likes to be in control. He is traveling to Idaho for his best friend's wedding, and that friend happens to be engaged to Salem's twin. He has no idea that the stranger he shared a passionate one-night encounter with will become the woman who changes his life forever.
I absolutely loved these two. Cas is head over heels for Salem and understands her like no one else ever has. He becomes her safe place, the only person with whom she allows herself to show her real feelings and be vulnerable. He never tries to tame her. He simply encourages her to feel everything she needs to feel. He is completely crazy about her, and I loved how he showed it in every possible way.
And the chemistry between them? Oh my. They cannot keep their hands off each other, and their connection leads to some truly delicious spice. Cas is definitely a giver, and Salem does not hesitate to enjoy that to the fullest.
I also loved Salem's emotional journey. She slowly accepts that her mother will always be by her side, not in a physical sense but in an emotional and spiritual one. She repairs her relationship with her father, and she finally realizes that being in love is not nearly as frightening as she always believed. Opening herself up to love becomes the way she finds her perfect match.
The anticipation for the next books in the series is real, and I cannot wait to read Poet's story.
If you enjoy small-town romance, accidental pregnancy, ride-or-die friendships, a bit of drama, and all the warm family feels, this book is definitely for you!
Thank you so much to Emma for a copy of this great ARC!
I am a huge Emma Slate fan. There's something about her writing that is just flawless.
I started this book thinking I'd just do a chapter or two. It was getting late and I'd just received it, thought I'd ease in to it.
3 hours later it's almost 1am and I had to finish the book. Was I tired. Yes. Did I accidently get lost in this book. Yes. Did I regret it the next. Absolutely NOT.
This book was so good I didn't even realise how far down the rabbit hole I fell until I looked up at the end and I was like, oh, life 😂
I loved everything about this book. Salem the FMC was sassy and quick while being completely open and bared about her grief. As someone who has also lost a parent, it really is a battle of emotions and this book captured it beautifully how sometimes, trying to protect yourself actually harms yourself more.
Then we have Cas. Swoon. Everything you want in a man. One night and he was in. He knew what he wanted. He saw her, without asking him too. He just knew. He didn't force her to fit into a box, he just made his box fit around her. He was a safe and solid space that didn't want change just acceptance of them.
He was wise and gentle and ready to be on her journey as long as he was there.
I loved his confidence, it was hot and steamy without being overbearing. Together they were fire and funny and just adorable.
I honestly loved every second of this book and I was so easily swept up in this story I genuinely couldn't put it down, not that I could if I wanted to.
I hope it's a compliment how fast you could read a book it's that good when I'm sure it took so much longer to write.
I can not wait for more, bring on Poet and what sneaky snippet of I'm sure to be another fantastic journey of spice, nice, cowboys and dirty mouths 🔥
By far and easily one of my all time favourite authors. It really is a joy to read these books and never be let down by how good these books are as soon as you start.
I was unbelievably fortunate to receive this book as an Arc but all thoughts and opinions are my own.
Thank you immensely for this opportunity.
Don't just take my word for it, go and fall in love with Cas and Salem for yourself!!! With a cute goat, fox and hound to boot!😂🩵🧡
I love this story has much has Hadley and Declan's story if not more,Salem goes home for her sister' wedding because their father got sick.So the night before Salem gets on a plane she has a one night stand with a stranger and sneaks out in the middle of the night before they exchange names, but she soon fines out what and who he is when he is her seat mate on the plane, plus he is Declan's best friend and best man,she does get Cas to keep their secret about their one night stand but doesn't realize that night change their lives. So with helping with the care of her father, helping with her sister's wedding and learning about Cas and trying to hide their nights together, Salem is quite busy but she misses her mother so when she fines out that her father has girlfriend who just a little older than her and that her sister and the whole town knew about it doesn't sit right with her.But Jane grows on her especially after she moves in.Of course it's not easy to keep secerts when Muddy her grandmother is around, she knows everything and gets especially hard to hide the facts when the farmhouse starts to load up with guests.Salem is going threw alot of feelings, like does she really want to live in the city, maybe she wants to stay, she is confused and it doesn't help that she has been told that Cas isn't a family man and to stay away from him.Well the wedding day is here for her sister and of course in true Salem fashion it doesn't go off like it should,The mean girl of the town, the mean girl of the school is at the reception she is out for revenge and she gets it by revealing Salem and Cas's big secert in front of friends and family and cause hurt feeling between Declan and Cas.This story has alot of action, jealousy and catfights! Alot of laughs, alot of tears and so much happiness and I really got a laugh or two from reading this story! I was team Bromen or Cas all the way, when he met that stranger in the night he knew he would have his hands full and he was up for the task since he had to have patience to be a bull rider and he could handle tater tot! Also enjoyed the payback of what Salem did to Amber when they had their last year together! ENJOY,
I've said it before and I'm here to say it again; if Emma writes it, I'm gonna read and love it. She is the dialogue queen, there's no question about that. All the interactions between her characters, be they family, best friends or intimate, all feel so natural.
Salem and Cas are the next instalment in the Saddles and Spurs series and I'm already looking forward to book 3 (no pressure). Salem is the family brat, a young woman with an explosive temper and deep, deep well of protectiveness for her loved ones. She left town and kept running after family loss, but now she's back and every one treats her like the powder keg she is. Everyone that is, apart from Cas. He calls her out on her behaviour, gives her a nickname and then they practically set fire to the sheets every time they get together.
Salem's brattishness comes from unresolved grief that gives her a push/pull dynamic with everyone around her. How marvellous then, that she has found an emotionally aware bullrider who has fallen hard and fast for her and wants her to stick around. There's even a former bully from high school to really up the small town pettiness, and having grown up in such an environment, believe me when I say I was cackling.
Muddy is a favourite character in this series, being the matriarch of the family who also seems to be a bit of a seer. It's that or it's her generational experience that informs her savoir faire approach to everyone around her. Either way she calls it how she sees it with grace and humour, and everyone circles around her like the faithful little satellites they are. Being the grandmother puts her in the great position of being able to call things as she sees them without getting the flack that perhaps a mother would. I'm here for it.
Oh and on a side note, Emma gets ALL the points, awards, sashes and tiaras for the truly unique early detection from Cas that there was something afoot.
As always, wonderful character development and interactions, the spice was spicing, and I can't wait to see the next two books. Of course, no pressure. But, pressure. C'mon, Emma. You're already writing books 3 and 4, right? We wants it. We needs the precious!

Their one night stand turned friendship is not turning into something more as the chemistry between them burns hotter and hotter. Once again, Emma did not disappoint! Lavender Lake is the second in the Saddles and Spurs series (interconnected standalones). This story follows the first book FMC’s twin sister Salem.
Where to start with my feelings and thoughts on this amazing book. I thoroughly enjoyed Huckleberry Hill but I felt so much more connected to Lavender Lake, particularly Salem. Salem has so many complex emotions and she puts up a wall. I really felt like I could relate to her with her struggles with coping with all those feelings. And Cas… the man that you are! He was the perfect golden retriever to Salem’s black cat. He could see through those walls Salem put up and pushed through them. He was a friend and support for Salem first and foremost. Seeing their relationship blossom and Salem’s walls come down was heartwarming. And the spice was perfect (as it always is with Emma’s books) but it was balanced well with the plot, character development and banter. I like that we got more about their friend group which makes me more excited for the next book: Poet’s story! If you like a down bad motorcycle riding cowboy who won’t give up on his black cat girl, you won’t regret reading this book!
Thank you so much to Emma Slate for giving me the pleasure of reading this ARC 💜 I can’t wait for the next one!
Thanks to Emma Slate for the free ARC. All opinions are my own in the following ARC Review.
Genres: Small Town Romance, Cowboy Romance Tropes: One-Night Stand, Age Gap, Best Man/Maid of Honor, Secret Romance, Accidental Pregnancy, Banter MC: Salem (FMC), Cas Bowman (MMC) Setting: Idaho Triggers: death of parent, grief Epilogue: yes
Synopsis: When Salem flies home for her twin sister’s wedding, the last person she expects to see is her recent one-night stand, who turns out to be the best man, Cas Bowman. Once home, Salem faces family tensions, small-town memories, and the emotional weight of returning home after her mother’s passing. She becomes upset and overwhelmed because everyone in her hometown has kept things from her. She finds comfort in Cas both physically and emotionally. They agree to keep their relationship secret until her sister’s wedding, but find it difficult when the unexpected happens. Salem eventually learns to let go of her pain, and finds the happily ever after she didn’t realize she wanted.
Thoughts: This was a fun book, and I really enjoyed reading it. I loved the push and pull between Salem and Cas. They seemed like the male/female versions of each other, which made them the perfect match in this case. They both seemed misunderstood by everyone, but themselves. Despite Salem’s continual reluctance to give into their bond and start a relationship, I’m glad she was able to let go of her fears and chase her happiness with Cas. It might have hurt both of them, but him pushing her was exactly what was needed to move forward. I will say, I wasn’t too fond of how people, especially Hadley and Declan, treated Salem in general. I would share a lot of her same emotions if I went through what she did, but just wouldn’t be as loud about it. I think she was “loud and dramatic” because no one actually listens to her, and in fact kinda of overlook how she’s feeling. She tries to express herself, but it reaches an overdramatic level when people tell her she needs to feel different, do something different, or shove her emotions down. I think she’s a product of her own environment. I thought Cas was a good counterpart to this, calming her mind and spirit in the way she needed. I’m excited to see what Salem and Hadley are both having, and wonder how the other girls will wind up back in their small town.
ARC Review Lavender Lake by Emma Slate ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 I absolutely fell in love with Huckleberry Hill, so I knew Lavender Lake wouldn’t disappoint and wow, what a beautiful follow up. Emma Slate delivers a heartfelt, emotional, and spicy small town romance that had me hooked from page one. This book follows Salem, Hadley’s wild child twin sister, as she returns home after her dad is injured. Salem has always been a lot fiery, chaotic, bold but she’s also hurting, especially after losing her mum. On her trip home, she has a one night, no names, no strings encounter with a stranger… only to discover the next morning on her flight that he’s sitting right beside her. And he’s also the best man in her sister’s wedding. Cas Bowman is a famous bull rider steady, controlled, loyal, and the kind of cowboy you’d want in your corner. He falls hard and fast for Salem, even before he knows her name. Their connection is instant fire. The chemistry.. Undeniable. The banter Top-tier. The communication Shockingly good for two people who barely know one another. Back home, Salem is overwhelmed by family tension, unresolved grief, small-town memories, and secrets that everyone but her seems to know. Cas quickly becomes her safe space emotionally and physically as he sees straight through her walls to the real Salem underneath. When a surprise pregnancy throws their worlds off balance, Cas is all in while Salem has to face her fears, her past, and her own heart. This story is full of warmth, healing, cowboy charm, and a romance that burns bright. Salem’s growth and Cas’s unwavering devotion made this such an addictive read. Tropes & Vibes: 💜Small town 💜 Bull rider 💜 Surprise/accidental pregnancy 💜 One night stand 💜 Cowboy romance 💜 Family drama + healing 💜 Age gap If you love small town romance, emotional healing, surprise pregnancy, swoony cowboys, and all the big family feels, Lavender Lake is absolutely for you. .
Lavender Lake completely swept me up. What starts as a one-night stand meant to blow off steam turns into a fate-filled, emotionally rich love story when Salem literally runs into the same man on the plane heading back to her hometown, where everything she’s been avoiding is waiting for her. From that moment on, I couldn't wait to read on.
Salem’s return to Elk Ridge is heavy with grief, complicated family dynamics, and unresolved pain after losing her mother and being estranged from her father. Emma Slate handles this emotional terrain so thoughtfully. Salem is impulsive, deeply feeling, and guarded in a way that makes perfect sense once you understand her past. Watching her confront her grief and slowly allow herself to feel instead of run was one of the most rewarding parts of this story.
Cas Bowman, meanwhile, is everything I want in a romance hero. A confident, famous bull rider who likes control, but with Salem, he’s patient, grounding, and completely gone for her. He sees straight through her emotional walls and never tries to tame or fix her. He simply shows up, again and again, becoming her safe place in a way that feels earned and deeply swoony.
The chemistry between these two is undeniable and deliciously spicy (Cas is absolutely a giver), but what really makes this book shine is the emotional connection. Their one-night stand turning into friendship, and then something deeper, felt natural and beautifully paced. Add in found family vibes, ride-or-die friendships, and the warmth of a small town that feels alive, and this story just works.
By the end, Salem’s journey toward healing, forgiveness, and love felt complete and incredibly satisfying. I closed this book already excited for what’s next in the series. Poet’s story cannot come soon enough. If you love small-town romance, accidental pregnancy, emotional depth, and a hero who is all in, Lavender Lake is absolutely worth the read.
