This little cookbook completely stole our hearts. My Very First Baking Book is everything I want in a kitchen companion for my tiny chef—bright, playful, confidence‑building, and full of the kind of memories we’ll be talking about for years.
My 3‑year‑old daughter is absolutely obsessed with cooking, and this book made her feel like a real baker from the very first page. The recipes are simple, detailed, and so easy to follow, with clear ingredients and step‑by‑step directions that even the littlest hands can help with. We all learned something new together, which made every recipe feel like a mini adventure.
The theme of cooking together shines through every page. The colorful, whimsical illustrations kept my daughter giggling and engaged, and the conversation starters and playful touches turned our kitchen time into something even more special. It’s not just a baking book—it’s a memory‑making book.
And yes… we found new family favorites. The Strawberry Lemonade Tiramisu was an instant hit and will definitely be making repeat appearances in our home.
Encouraging, creative, and overflowing with joy, this cookbook is perfect for families who love to learn, laugh, and bake side by side. Your little chef will adore it. Enjoy this sweet cooking adventure together.
This cookbook is perfect for the inspiring baker in your household. My Very First Baking Book introduces young bakers to simple recipes that they can do with the help of an older cook. These simple recipes come with everything you'd expect in a cookbook, even going as far as to offer substitutions in some recipes. There are parts of the cookbook that's not strictly baking, offering jokes, colorful illustrations, and facts to help keep the reader engaged. It even has space for the baker to eventually add their own recipes to the book.
The only issue I have with this book is that a few of the recipes are a little more complicated, and it would require a lot more help from the helper than it would allow the little to bake/work on on their own. It is meant to teach and encourage safety, which is great, but I can see this being a little discouraging for the young baker that wants to be able to do these recipes all by themselves. It would still make a great gift for a little one, even if it might not be as independently driven as one may wish for.
Thank you NetGalley and SOURCEBOOKS Kids for giving me an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
My Very First Baking Book is a charming introduction to the kitchen for young bakers who are already solid readers. The recipes are clearly written, the steps are easy to follow with supervision, and the illustrations are bright and inviting. This would make a wonderful gift for an elementary-aged child who’s ready to take their first steps into independent baking.
As a parent, I would love to see a future version geared toward preschoolers with ultra-simple recipes and mostly picture-based instructions. My son loves helping in the kitchen, and he would be thrilled with a book designed for kids who aren’t reading yet. Until then, this will be a great resource for him once he’s able to follow the written directions himself.
Thank you to NetGalley for providing a copy of this book for review.
For a book called my very first baking book with a cover that looks like it could come from a board book, this is more complicated than I was expecting. It has some recipes that sound super tasty. The layout of the book is done well. It’s bright. It’s colorful. Kids are going to want to look and read it. But what the title tells me and what I got seem to be a misnomer. I’m not exactly sure of the reading level of this book but it’s up there with any other cookbook. Some things are explained more simply and don’t use fancy words, but you must have a third fourth fifth grade reading level to understand every page. And there’s no complaints about that. It’s just the very first baking book. This doesn’t seem like a very first. This seems more like a kid’s bake together than a very first.
This is a great beginning baking book for kids! Would be great for parents or grandparents to help kids have fun & make memories baking.
Broken down into sections like cookies, cakes & savory items (with clever kid-friendly names). Extra tips are helpful - like if you don't have buttermilk, how you can make your own.
Lots of brightly colored pictures makes it appealing to kids & adults alike.
A great resource!!
Thanks to Netgalley, the author & publisher for the ARC read. All opinions are my own. Review crossposted on Bookbub & Goodreads.

What a fantastic book for aspiring young bakers! Designed to be used with an adult, these recipes are delicious, well-explained, and sure to be loved by a wide range of ages. Like the cover, the inside is brightly illustrated. There are sections for different kinds of baked goods (like cookies, cakes, etc) and really helpful tips throughout. I plan on purchasing a copy for my school's library. It would also make a great gift for those wanting to spend more time with their littles in the kitchen.
This is a charming book for parents and grandparents to bake with their 6-10 year old. The recipes are unique and tasty, plus there are some savory as well as sweet recipes. There are extras in the book that make it special. It is a nice hardcover with thick card pages.
