Rumiko Takahashi (高橋留美子) was born in Niigata, Japan. She is not only one of the richest women in Japan but also one of the top paid manga artists. She is also the most successful female comic artist in history. She has been writing manga non-stop for 31 years.

Rumiko Takahashi is one of the wealthiest women in Japan. The manga she creates (and its anime adaptations) are very popular in the United States and Europe where they have been released as both manga and anime in English translation. Her works are relatively famous worldwide, and many of her series were some of the forerunners of early English language manga to be released in the nineties. Takahashi is also the best selling female comics artist in history; well over 100 million copies of her various works have been sold.

Though she was said to occasionally doodle in the margins of her papers while attending Niigata Chūō High School, Takahashi's interest in manga did not come until later. During her college years, she enrolled in Gekiga Sonjuku, a manga school founded by Kazuo Koike, mangaka of Crying Freeman and Lone Wolf and Cub. Under his guidance Rumiko Takahashi began to publish her first doujinshi creations in 1975, such as Bye-Bye Road and Star of Futile Dust. Kozue Koike often urged his students to create well-thought out, interesting characters, and this influence would greatly impact Rumiko Takahashi's works throughout her career.

Career and major works:

Takahashi's professional career began in 1978. Her first published story was Those Selfish Aliens, a comedic science fiction story. During the same year, she published Time Warp Trouble, Shake Your Buddha, and the Golden Gods of Poverty in Shōnen Sunday, which would remain the home to most of her major works for the next twenty years. Later that year, Rumiko attempted her first full-length series, Urusei Yatsura. Though it had a rocky start due to publishing difficulties, Urusei Yatsura would become one of the most beloved anime and manga comedies in Japan.

In 1980, Rumiko Takahashi found her niche and began to publish with regularity. At this time she started her second major series, Maison Ikkoku, in Big Comic Spirits. Written for an older audience, Maison Ikkoku is often considered to be one of the all-time best romance manga. Takahashi managed to work on Maison Ikkoku on and off simultaneously with Urusei Yatsura. She concluded both series in 1987, with Urusei Yatsura ending at 34 volumes, and Maison Ikkoku being 15.

During the 1980s, Takahashi became a prolific writer of short story manga, which is surprising considering the massive lengths of most of her works. Her stories The Laughing Target, Maris the Chojo, and Fire Tripper all were adapted into original video animations (OVAs). In 1984, after the end of Urusei Yatsura and Maison Ikkoku, Takahashi took a different approach to storytelling and began the dark, macabre Mermaid Saga. This series of short segments was published sporadically until 1994, with the final story being Mermaid's Mask. Many fans contend that this work remains unfinished by Takahashi, since the final story does not end on a conclusive note.

Another short work left untouched is One-Pound Gospel, which, like Mermaid Saga, was published erratically. The last story to be drawn was published in 2001, however just recently she wrote one final chapter concluding the series

Later in 1987, Takahashi began her third major series, Ranma ½. Following the late 80s and early 90s trend of shōnen martial arts manga, Ranma ½ features a gender-bending twist. The series continued for nearly a decade until 1996, when it ended at 38 volumes. Ranma ½ is one of Rumiko Takahashi's most popular series with the Western world.

During the later half of the 1990s, Rumiko Takahashi continued with short stories and her installments of Mermaid Saga and One-Pound Gospel until beginning her fourth major work, InuYasha. While Ran

The plan to read Ranma 1/2 less frequently was a smashing success. If volumes are binged, it gets cloying that Ranma and Akane never get together, and that no one progresses beyond their status quo romantic hang-ups. It's a sitcom with so many characters waiting on the precipice of character development that never comes. Taken in smaller chunks, it's an absolutely hilarious sitcom, and all of those points of character tension fire.

The main story from this volume is that someone has cursed Ranma to lose all his strength. Now Ryoga won't even beat him up out of pity for the pathetic boy (Ryoga running away in tears over how pathetic he is becomes one of the funniest things in the series). Many of Ranma's old rivals (and suitors) show up to get a whack in, and Ranma is left scurrying for a method to get his strength back. That takes the story down the path of arcane training methods, which lead to exactly the sorts of Martial Arts parody you expect from the series at this point.

Takahashi's art remains charming, and as characters alternately get sincerely worried or ridiculously reckless over the plot, it just gets more fun. One of my favorite volumes in the series to date.

Altro albo divertente.

This volume has two story arcs: In the first, Shampoo, Ryoga, and Ranma fight over a bar of soap that stops them from transforming. In the second arc (which is continued in volume 12), Ranma loses all his strength and has to work to get it back.

Note: I'm not sure if the ratings were down for the series or what, but the first chapter in this volume has an extended sequence at at bath house with nudity and lots of what is obviously just fan service.

I really don't like whenever Happosai appears in the series. He's not funny, he is just gross and annoying, and I wish he would just stop being part of the series.
Ryoga is kind of a sad character what with the type of family he's a part of. Like it's one thing for just him to have a horrible sense of direction, but both of his parents being just as bad? Just straight up depressing.

This is possibly one of my favorite volumes of Ranma manga. There are two stories within, so there’s a bit more in-depth story telling. The first is a fun Ryoga-centric arc when he accidentally ends up with Shampoo’s magical soap that prevents cold water from affecting her. Shampoo and Ranma realize that he has it and scheme to get it back, setting him up on a bathhouse date with Akane. And of course, shenanigans ensue: Ryoga realizes that the soap is special, Akane gets brainwashed by Shampoo and tries to flirt the soap away from Ryoga, Ryoga becomes emboldened by Akane’s affection, Akane (now back to herself) asks why the soap is so important, Ranma and Ryoga fight - over the soap, over the fact that Ranma cares more about the soap than Akane), and Akane’s life is out at risk. Ryoga’s enthusiasm to hold her is also alarmingly violent, so Ranma switches places with Akane to lure Ryoga into a trap; he manages to steal the soap, and Ryoga learns (now in pig-form) that the soap wears off.

It’s a silly arc filled with moments of jealousy and such, and ultimately re-sets the clock on Akane figuring out that Ryoga in P-Chan, since she saw him get wet several times without changing.

The next arc is one of my favorite in the whole series: the Ultimate Weakness Moxibustion. Ranma losses off Happosai, so he touches a pressure point and suddenly Ranma is so weak he can’t hurt a thing. His rivals find out, and all of them try to beat him up (except Ryoga, who won’t fight such a weak opponent). Ranma and his father run off to train, Ukyo in tow to cook for them. Akane chases them down and finds Ranma after Cologne shows him a move that cold help him defeat Happosai to obtain the chart that will reverse his state of strength.

It’s called the Heaven Blast of the Dragon (hiryu shoten ha), and relies on Ranma remaining icy cool while luring someone with a hot battle aura into a spiral to essentially create a tornado, and then punch them upward into the twister. The problem is they need someone who has no qualms hurting Ranma to train with him. Ryoga shows up (having been lost in the woods) and agrees, but he can’t bring himself to hate Ranma enough. Akane thinks if it’s heat they need, she can wrap her arms and set them ablaze - but after two swings sets herself on fire. She puts it out, and Ranma offers his shirt to cover her burned up gi. They fight, and he admits to an angry, teary Akane that’d didn’t want to be seen as weak and pathetic in front of her of all people. Ryoga comes across them, sees Akane’s tears and mangled clothing, and assumes the worst. “Prepare to die!” he shouts, and that’s where the volume ends.

This has great art, a new technique, juicy shipping stuff (no matter who your fiancé-of-choice is!) and shows off Ranma’s ability to analyze martial arts moves. His arrogance feels appropriate when he breaks down the move and tells Cologne he’ll master it within three days. It’s just a really good arc, and is at least eight or nine chapters long.

Part 1: The Soap of Happiness: Royga is back in town. Ranma, Genma and Akane are at the public bath. Ryoga comes there as P-chan and changes. Ranma takes a letter from him that he had written to Akane. Meanwhile Shampoo changes from cat form to nude girl form and tells a nude Akane that that changing into a cat is over. She has a soap that prevents (temporarily) the curse from taking place. Ryoga uses the soap and doesn't change.

Part 2: Cupids, Draw Back Your Bow: Ryoga is unable to tell Akane about his feelings for her. Meanwhile both Ranma-chan and Shampoo put on disguises to trick Ryoga. It doesn't work.

Part 3: Don't Follow Me: Ryoga and Akane sort of have a date, but instead of a theater then end up in a fun house with Ranma and Shampoo trying to get the special soap back.

Part 4: Who Do You Love?: Shampoo uses acupressure to get Akane under her control and she gets the soap from Ryoga. Shampoo gets it and Ranma ends up swallowing it.

Part 5: Give Me A Little Hug: Ryoga picks up Akane and runs off with her, but misuses her strength and scares her. Ranma-chan takes Akane's place to protect her from Ryoga.

Part 6: The Legendary Moxibustion of Evil: Happosai is running from women he's stolen panties from and Ranma tosses him back to them. They beat Happosai up, and he's really mad at Ranma. Happosai uses a technique that makes Ranma really weak. Happosai then also lets everyone know Ranma is weak.

Part 7: The World's Weakest Man: Happosai admits he doesn't know a cure. Ranma is attacked, but Ryoga refuses to attack him. Ukyo offers to take care of him. Dr. Tofu thinks he has a cure.

Part 8: Weak for Life?: It turns out Happosai has a chart showing the cure. Ranma tries to take it but can't. He and Genma leave the dojo.

Part 9: The Valley of Moxibustion: Genma, Ranma, Ukyo and Cologne are all on a trip together. Cologne says she may an idea. It's called The Heaven Blast of the Dragon. Using that he can get the cure chart away from Happosai. Akane joins them.

Part 10: Training in the Spiral of Hell: Cologne has Akane and Ukyo sit things out. Ryoga joins them and he and Genma will attack Ranma who has to learn to lead them into a spiral.

Part 11: The Inflammable Man: Ranma and Akane have an argument and Ryoga thinks Ranma has tried to rape Akane and he gets furious.

The first story deals with a magic soap Shampoo discovers that can prevent transformation. Ranma, Ryoga and Shampoo all fight for possession of it. Once Ryoga no longer turns into P-chan he finally has the courage to ask Akane out and Shampoo and Ranma push them together.

Happosai his Ranma with a moxibusion spell that saps his strength. He turns to Shampoo's grandmother to try and regain his strength and has to undergo intense training.

Another fun volume. Ryoga comes across as particularly sympathetic. Love his reaction to Ranma's loss of power in the second story. This is slightly less insane than other volumes and we get nice cameos from Mousse, Ukyo and all the regular favourites.

Its silly, its lightening paced, but can't help but make you smile.

Well, volume 11 was much better than volume 10...but unfortunately this is the point where the series is running out of steam. The soap storyline was fun (yay Shampoo!) and the beginning of Ranma's weakness streak was interesting (what I liked most about it was you got to see some actual emotions from some of the characters and that was nice.... oh...and Cologne of course :-p)

I really love Ryoga a lot. Him and Akane really should be together! They'd be a cute couple.

Unfortunately, from here on out I doubt I'll be as crazy for the volumes as I was in the beginning :-( That makes me sad but it's to be expected when the series is so long.

Just when things look like they are getting uninteresting Rumiko Takahashi (thankfully) picks things up!

Though Ranma can get repetitive at times, I do applaud Takahashi for coming up with all the different and fun plots that she does! The first story involving the "water proof" soap was quite funny! And it was nice to see Ranma get jealous even though Akane isn't really into Ryoga. Also the whole "Moxibustion" turning Ranma weak has been more entertaining/interesting than I thought it would be! Looking forward to volume 12:))

Yes, all of the Axe and Old Spice commercials are true; soap really canMAGIC soap, of course! Also in this volume, Ranma is brought to his knees by a pressure point which saps all his strength -- and he might stay that way FOREVERRRR!

In which Ryoga accidentally steals Shampoo's waterproof soap and Ranma becomes the weakest man in the world. Can he master the old hag's secret technique and get the secret scrolls from Happosai?
