Rate this book
Forty-six years ago, a calamitous event occurred, locking the world in an endless winter. Now, the city of Coldhaven stands isolated, struggling to survive the unending cold with what meager resources they can produce and salvage.

Responsible for maintaining the city's steam systems, Joe Kennedy spends his days repairing the complex network of pipes that provide the life-giving heat to the citizens of Coldhaven.

When the medicine that keeps his young daughter's condition in check runs low, things become desperate for Joe and his family. Denied the critical resource by the city's harsh decrees, he is forced to seek salvation in the only place left to him, the frozen expanse.

With few options remaining, he secures a spot on one of the balloon teams—a precarious venture that may provide access to lost caches of resources. Risking everything he has ever known, his journey takes him farther than he ever thought possible, out into the distant snow and beyond…

I enjoyed "Winterfall". The action is good, the characters (especially Ellie) are lovable and the worldbuilding is thorough, without being too in-your-face. The plot is unique and managed to stay ahead of this reader. Bonus points for me being a train and airship fanactic! The challenges faced by the characters are on-point and the way in which they were overcome were plausible, even if they did rely on luck quite a bit.

Something that did slow down the pace a bit was Joe Kennedy (MC) frequently ruminating over his life, the health of his daughter and the situation he found his family in. I forgive this as a quirk of his personality and acknowledge that I would probably do the same.

Recommended for furries and non-furries looking for a unique, clean and charming sci-fi adventure with heart and excellent worldbuilding.

Lots of really great characters to get behind in this one, especially the main two of Joe and Ellie. Lots of mystery and unanswered questions still with the worldbuilding, which I am looking forward to being unveiled later on!

A really solid read that always keeps up the interest with the promise of another great plot point just around the corner.

Really loved this book, and I thought Joe was an amazing character. I also loved the setting—the relentless cold.
