This was a read for school. I'm giving it 5 stars because for a survey book that I was forced to read, I really enjoyed it! I think I will reference this book often.

This book is an excellent resource that is a must have for Bible scholars. Though it is not a commentary, nor does it really offer any theological information, it is still a great resource to have. In it you get information regarding the context and background of each book of the Bible. Hendriksen gives outlines, memorization tips, interpretive information, and the timeline of each book.

Now, I must admit that I personally don’t like most of the outlines he offers for each book, but they aren’t necessarily wrong - just different and not as detailed as I would like them to be. However, his focus is on the big picture and how each separate book of the Bible welds together to form one big book and his outlines reflect that. As anybody who has studied the Word knows, every book is an individual book, but it is a part of a larger story and Hendriksen does a decent job of putting things together individually and united.

I must also not that there are things in this book that don’t line up perfectly with modern scholarship, but for the most part I think that this is a good thing. Most of what Hendriksen does, I agree with even if he doesn’t do it how I would (he is much smarter than me though, I am sure).

Overall, I find this book to be one of the best resources I have for context and interpretive information before digging into a book. It is well done and mostly I am in agreement with him. The most valuable of all the things he has to offer however, are the memorization tips and the information contained in the first 3 chapters.

My Rating: 8/ 10 Stars.

This book is certainly a treasure that will remain on my top shelf next to my strongs and commentaries.

William Hendriksen faithfully illuminates each book of the Bible and shows how it fits into the greater historical and soteriological framework. I also appreciated his easy to remember acronyms/outlines for each book although I’m afraid I was not able/willing to commit them to memory (great for reference though).

I think his final chapter on Revelation was the best one. I love these quotes:

“Beautiful beyond description is the last book of the Bible. It is beautiful in form, in symbolism, in purpose, and in meaning” ... “What a wealth of comfort; what an insight into the future; above all, what an unveiling of the love of God is contained in the words of the prophecy of this book!” ... There is a beautiful connection between the first book and the last. Scripture resembles a flower. We find the seed in Genesis, the growing plant in the books which follow, the fully developed and beautiful flower in the Apocalypse.”

Great overview of the messages, background, and themes of both the Old and New Testaments, from a conservative perspective. It could serve as both a good read and a handy reference.
