He’s the forbidden enigma I wanted to ignore . . . but instead I’ll be forced to share a home with him.
Jameson Knight arrives at precisely the same time every day to pick up his young daughter from school, smiling as she runs into his open arms.
It’s the only time I see him smile.
I don’t ask questions because it’s not my place. I’m just his daughter’s favorite teacher, nothing more. . . . Until the first bullet flies by us at recess.
Suddenly, I’m risking my life to protect her. And then Jameson drags me back to his estate, claiming it’s a matter of life-or-death.
Now I’m in the most beautiful home I’ve ever seen, faced with an offer from a man who’s just as gorgeous: Be the temporary live-in nanny until he can ensure my safety and find a more permanent solution. It’ll be easy, he promises.
Yet, the arrangement is anything but simple.
Not when Jameson’s hungry stare is all consuming and his touch pulse racing.
And definitely not when I find that nothing in this neighborhood is as it seems, including Jameson.
He may be powerful, possessive, and protective. But he’s also dangerous, demanding, and calculating.
As more of his secrets come out, I should run but . . .
How do I escape the enigma of Jameson Knight if he’s already captured my heart?
Shain Rose is an author of Contemporary Romance and New Adult novels. She fights for love one word a time. Those happily ever afters can be difficult to get to sometimes!
When she isn't writing, she's spending the days with Doc G, Liv and Gray Gray, and their wild golden retriever. She and Doc G drink way too much coffee, eat way too much candy, and fight like they've been married for hmm how long has it been now?
Life is good when the kids are behaving.
On the off chance she's not writing or spending time with family and friends, she's calling them to talk. And if no one answers.... then she's reading and watching trashy TV.
This was my first Shain Rose book - I am now a fan and will definitely be reading more of her books.
What's inside: Single Dad Forced Proximity Secret Society Mafia Slow Burn Yearning & Tension Teacher/Nanny
Behind Closed Doors definitely grabbed a hold of me and kept me turning the pages. I devoured this in less than 24 hours!
Mia is a summer school teacher at an exclusive school, teaching second grade children of wealthy and elite families. When she is waiting with one of her students, Franny, to be picked up, the school is attacked by a group of trained killers and bullets fly. When the dust settles, Franny's father Jameson brings Mia back to his home for protection and then convinces her to give up her position at the school and stay on as a private teacher and nanny for the summer.
As Mia and Jameson are forced to be around each other, she begins to discover that the life he leads may not be that of the doctor she was lead to believe that he is. The tension starts to burn hot and they both feel a strong attraction to the other, but try to fight it since they are from different worlds. Their secrets start to unravel as they bond over their mutual love for Franny, and then their desire starts to blaze hotter, until it ignites.
This books had some great character development. I really got to know and love Mia, Jameson and Franny, as well as some of the side characters. The tension and yearning were strong and the spice was perfect. I stayed up WAY too late one-more-chaptering myself because I didnt want to put it down. If you enjoy a good modern day mafia/secret society romance with forced proximity and lots of tension, then you shoukd definitely read this book.
Thank you to Kensington Books, Between the Chapters and Shain Rose for a physical ARC of this book.
Single Dad , Check Leader of a Private Crime Organization , Check Starting Wars behind his daughter and her teacher, Check Check Check
Mia is one to usually display her "Darling" side when faced with adversity. However, when children are involved she will not cower for anyone and stand tall to protect them. This is how she ends up in the clutches of a secret society ran by one of her students Dad. She will protect Franny at all costs while she tries to fight her attraction to her frustratingly handsome Dad. She will have to be her true self if she wants to survive this new world and boy does she deliver. I rooted for Mia throughout this whole book. She didn't fit into their world but she wasn't about to shy away from it. Her confidence and fire mad me want to read more and oh my the spice scenes!!! Gear up for laughs, angry and love.
I absolutely LOVED this book. I have sooo many feelings and if my annotated copy doesn’t screamed obsessed I don’t know what will. Shain continues to never disappoint and just adds to my obsession of her books.
This does start a new series for her but I always love the Easter eggs of getting other characters from other books. Knowing how they all are interconnected in a way just makes all their stories so much for fun. Plus we all know I’m a SUCKER for the Hardy boys so going back to them always makes my day better.
This book is Jameson and Mia’s story. What starts out as a recluse billionaire single dad raising his daughter and the school teacher hired to teach summer school for an elite group of kids, quickly changes to Mia being not so subtlety kidnapped for the summer to be a live in nanny/teacher. But watching Jameson constantly fight internally with himself to not cave to the darling Mia it’s just a fun ride!
Mia has her own past and doesn’t shy away from the dark that is Jameson world. She may not have grown up knowing all he does and living that life style but even with everything that tore her down she is determined to find light in everything around her. Taking in the moments and the small things, but also NOT afraid to spar with Jameson when he tries to be the demanding boss he thinks he is 😉
I loved getting these twos story and I can’t wait for what is to come. I hope we get more of Mia’s sister but only time will tell. We get to meet soooooooooo may we Character’s in this book and I just ate them all up. Soo many favorites to come.
a little mafia x secret society x nanny. yes please. Mia and Jameson are so perfect, yet unhinged at the same time. I love how no matter what she alwsys put Franny first. When that plot twist hit my jaw was on the floor. I cant wait to read the next book in the series.
Title: Behind Closed Doors Author: Shain Rose Series: Kept in Paradise #1
What to expect: *Mafia romance *Boss x Employee *OW drama
Once the book is published I will come back to my review and update in more detail. For now, this book is just not for me. This is absolutely a personal trigger thing, not a reflection of how the book was written.
If you are triggered by OW drama then you will want to stay away from this book. Every chapter has OW on page and/or mentioned.
Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Publishing for the opportunity to read and review this title.
ARC Review — Behind Closed Doors by Shain Rose Release Date: February 24, 2026
Behind Closed Doors hooked me from the very first chapter and refused to let go. This was my first time reading anything by Shain Rose, and I can confidently say it won’t be my last. The story blends mafia romance, forced proximity, a secret society, and a fiercely protective single dad, basically all my favorite tropes wrapped into one wild ride.
Mia, a dedicated summer school teacher at an elite academy, is just finishing up her day when the school is suddenly ambushed by trained attackers. Chaos erupts, bullets fly, and she barely manages to protect her student, Franny. When the smoke clears, Franny’s father, Jameson, shows up, and that’s when Mia’s life takes a sharp turn. Instead of letting her go home, he forces her to leave with him “for her safety,” bringing her to his heavily secured estate.
The more time Mia spends in Jameson’s world, the more she realizes he’s not the clean cut doctor his daughter believes he is. There are shadows he won’t talk about and danger lurking just beyond the edges of their fragile peace. Their chemistry is undeniable, but they both know they shouldn’t cross that line, he’s a single father with secrets, and she’s a woman who suddenly has everything to lose.
This book was a fast-paced, twisty, addictive read. I loved the characters, the suspense, and the slow burn that turns into a full-on inferno. Huge thank you to Kensington Publishing and Shain Rose for providing an ARC
Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Publishing for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Behind Closed Doors is a dark mafia romance that starts off very strong with an exciting scene where the FMC, who is the MMC’s child’s teacher, is forced into an underground bunker at the school when a rival mafia gang shoots up the school in an attempt to kidnap the child and the MMC (with the help of his men) swoops in to save the day.
I was so happy with this opening and hoped the rest of the book would follow suit but alas, it did not. The rest of the book was choppy and disjointed. The instalust was distracting and the MMC was changed from a bad boy to a golden retriever with a quickness.
There were also many grammatical errors and typos throughout.
Overall, it was an enjoyable book for what it is, but could use some work to make it better.
First of all thank you NetGalley for allowing me to read this ARC.
I absolutely loved this story! Jameson is a BA MMC and a possessive of what he cares about. I loved how he loved his daughter Franny and cared for her and her nanny. Mia (the nanny) was a BA FMC that has no fear! The banter was good. It is pretty dark, but Mafia Romances usually are. It gives Tarnished Empire vibes. It’s suspenseful, humorous, violent, and spicy! 🥵 So good! 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️
This is my first book from Shain Rose. I am pleased to say I have added Rose to my favorite authors. Check your triggers before reading. Single Dad, choking, kidnapping, Un-aliving, spicy content and more….
This is the first book that I have read that actually gave me butterflies and feeling exactly what Mia was feeling. The story line kept me hooked and didn’t want to put down. The gigantic plot twist was magnificent never saw it coming. You need no MUST add this to your TBR. This Mafia, billionaire, suspense with hot sexy content, comedy will come close to your heart and will drive you crazy all at the same time. Can’t wait for #2 of this series!!!!! #behindcloseddoors #shainrose #goodreads #arc
Ok this was my first time reading Shain Rose and omg I’m now a fan
Mia is summer school teacher at an exclusive school teaching second grade of wealthy families. When she was waiting with one of her students, franny to be picked up the school is attacked by a group of trained killers and bullets fly. When everything is done Franny’s father Jameson brings Mia back to his home for protection he convinces her to drop her position at the school and stay on as a private teacher/nanny for the summer.
As they both are forced to be around each other she begins to discover that the life he leads may not be that of the doctor she was lead to believe that he is. But when the tension starts to burn hot they start feeling the strong attraction between them but try to fight it as they live in different worlds. I absolutely devoured this book. Everything about kept me hooked from the first page. The tension and yearning was amazing I was giggling.
Thank you so much Kensington Publishing for letting me be a ARC reader for this!
Shain Rose can do no wrong. Behind Closed Doors gave me everything I needed from a mafia-like society with a man who literally does what he wants no matter the cost. Mia is a teacher whose connection to one of her students gets her “trapped” in a situation that is tough to get out of. Jameson is a single dad who will literally do anything for his daughter, including taking her favorite teacher to their private-idillic home in their ultra-swanky community. Watching Jameson encourage/force Mia to stay under his supervision for safety gives the BEST element of forced proximity and their fireworks are immediate. This romance has a mafia/dark/secretive element that turned out so good. Thank you Kensington Books & Shain Rose for this ARC!
This was a top 2026 read for me and we are only 7 days into the year! 5⭐️ 3🌶️
Single Dad Mafia Secret Society Touch her and Die vibes Dark Romance
The spice was spicing, the plot was plotting, the banter was bantering, and the build up was absolutely worth it.
It was too easy to get invested in the characters and the story line. I was so mad having to skirt my reading to partake in adult responsibilities. How rude of my bills needing me to go to my 9-5. 😂
I think I’ve found a new favorite romance author. I just wish the book didn’t end as soon as they got together. I wanna see the happily ever after please, but still a really fun book.
I truly enjoyed this one! I'm not sure what I was expecting, well, I mean I thought this was actually a fantasy book based on the cover, but clearly this was a mafia romance. I do like mafia romances, but haven't read one in awhile. This reminded me why I enjoy them so much. I loved the plot of this one. I liked that the FMC was a teacher and she was put in a situation unexpectedly. I loved how this was an employee-boss romance with forced proximity and a little bit of kidnapping. This is the first book I've read by Shain Rose, and I already know that this will not be my last. I loved how this was written and couldn't get enough.
Thank you to the publisher for the ARC copy that I won in a giveaway. This does not affect my review.
I went into Behind Closed Doors knowing it wasn’t really my usual kind of book, but I've heard so many good reviews about the author I couldn't not try it. The story many tropes I love, such as grumpy x sunshine, forced proximity, and boss x employee, but in this case they didn’t fully work for me. I believe my issue was more with the mafia romance rather than the story as a whole.
As a brief introduction (without spoilers), Mia is Franny’s summer school teacher, and from the start you can see how close they are. After an unfortunate event where their lives were endangered, Jameson, Franny's dad and boss of the Diamond syndicate, decides to take Mia with him. That decision leads to Mia basically being forced to live with him.
I actually think the idea behind the story is good, but I struggled with how the whole plot and relationship between Mia and Jameson was developed. To me, it felt very rushed and a bit forced. Their connection seemed to be based more on instant attraction than on actually getting to know each other, and I was missing that emotional build-up I usually look for in romance.
Mafia romance in general isn’t a genre I read often, and very few books in it have really worked for me, so that definitely played a role in my experience. Still, this book hasn’t completely put me off the author. I have several of her other books on my TBR, and I’m still curious to see whether her other stories work better for me.
Overall, this just wasn’t the book for me, but I can see how it might work for readers who really enjoy this genre and these tropes.
*Thanks NetGalley, Kensington Publishing and Shain Rose for this ARC!!!
I am a huge fan of Shain Rose and her books and love how she grabs your attention right from the start! I could not put this book down! The secrets and twists this book uncovered had me on the edge of my seat till the very end!
Mia is forced under Jameson's house and protection after the school Jameson's daughter attends and Mia teaches at is attacked. Jameson makes a deal with Mia that she can't refuse and she spends the summer homeschooling Franny and taking care of her when Jameson isn't around. She thought Jameson was a doctor but as his secrets unfold she has to decide if he is the kind of man she should fall for or should she walk away after the summer contract ends.
The tension!! OMG! It was done so well and the yearning from both Mia and Jameson was so good! I was on the edge of my seat with the will they won't they! They both wanted each other so bad but Jameson knew the life he had and was trying to save Mia from it. And sweet little Franny! She was so mature for her age but I think that comes with the life she was born into. Mia may be the teacher but I found that Franny taught a few lessons of her own. Mia may not have came from this Secret Society background but the confidence she had and throughout this story made her accepted by them. She was perfect for Jameson and how she put him in his place! No one got to speak to him like Mia did and he enjoyed it far too much! So many characters from past books were brought back that I loved and can't wait to see where this new series takes us!!
-Billionaire -Mafia -Single Dad x Nanny/Teacher -Morally Gray MMC -Forced Proximity -Secret Society
Thank you Shain and Kensington Books for this gifted ARC!
Behind Closed Doors by Shain Rose jumps straight into the action and tension, which I really appreciated. Nothing lingers too long at the beginning and the story immediately pulls you in with a sense of urgency and intrigue.
I really liked Mia’s spirit. She has a backbone and that strength is necessary when dealing with someone like Jameson. He is intense, dominant, and not exactly the soft MMC I usually gravitate toward, but their dynamic works. Mia’s fire balances his control, even if she can be a bit angrier than my personal preference at times.
There is some OW drama, which is not my favorite, but I was able to mostly overlook it. One of my favorite moments was the tennis scene where Mia gets the chance to show up Jameson a little. Those small wins for her felt very satisfying.
Their connection is angsty and rough around the edges, but once Jameson is fully down bad for Mia and willing to give her whatever she wants, I was completely invested. His possessiveness and protectiveness really worked for me and added to the tension and chemistry.
The secret society element, the intrigue, and the reveal at the end make this feel like the start of a strong series. I am definitely hooked and curious to see where this world goes next.
I received an ARC copy and all thoughts are my own.
Thank you to Shain Rose, Between the Chapters, and Kensington Publishing for the opportunity to read and review this book!
Whew we this book was like a sinfully sweet guilty pleasure. I love all things slow burn, forced proximity, secret society, with unbearable yearning and tension, and boy oh boy did Shain deliver here! This story was my introduction to Shain’s writing, and I can confidently say that I am a fan and will be looking for more of her books. For me, there was a really healthy mix of all things that make a good romance here. I tend to be pretty critical of mafia romances because they all seem to read the same, but this one will stick out for me, and I will be able to remember it. The story here was really well done, and I think the character development was what really set this mafia romance apart from the others I have read. Mia, Jameson, and of course, Franny were all characters that felt so real, like you might really know them. There was action, drama, secrets, and spice! All of these elements were just blended together really well for a story that grabs your attention and hangs on to it, forcing you to stay up late flipping pages (which is exactly what I did, lol). I will absolutely be recommending this book to all my romance-loving friends!
I have loved every book that I’ve read from Shain Rose! Her books never disappoint. My very first physical ARC was from Shain Rose two years ago, so her books are so special to me. I couldn’t get enough of this story, I was hooked! Please look at the trigger warnings before jumping in. As always, the book started off with a complete bang. You are immediately drawn in and can’t read fast enough to know what’s going to happen next. Mia, the FMC was headstrong and determined to have her voice heard. Jameson Knight, the MMC was an extremely powerful man. I loved the connection that Mia had with Jameson’s daughter. Hearing about the house and private community that Mia was staying in sounded heavenly. Her private security guard Archer, was one of my favorite characters. Mia and Jameson got to know each other slowly but Mia was also exposed to a lot at the same time. Watching them build a relationship behind closed doors was adorable but also super spicy. The turn of events towards the end blew my mind. The way it all turned out was dark and twisted but it was fun to read. I look forward to more books in the Kept in Paradise series!
This was a little Ozark, a little psychological thriller, and a little (IMO too much) 50 Shades of Grey mixed together. Not my typical genre to read, I was gifted a copy and decided to go outside of my comfort zone and give it a try. A sassy young woman, Mia, takes on a summer job as a teacher in a guarded school. She befriends Franny, a student whose father lives a dangerous life. When something happens to threaten the lives of Franny and Mia, the life Mia knew must change. There was too much that bothered me with this story. Although I began to like Mia’s sarcastic and smart attitude, there were situations where I had a hard time believing she’d be using it. Without any spoilers, I’ll just say that I really disliked the way things started to go with her and her boss, Jamieson. Much of the story was a stretch to believe and felt a bit disconnected at times. I really wish the sex parts were not so graphic and didn’t take over so much of the story. I’m sure there are people out there who might enjoy this type of book, but it just wasn’t for me. Thank you to Kensington Publishing and NetGalley for an ARC of this book. All opinions in this review are my own.
Behind Closed Doors by Shain Rose was a quick, spicy, and highly entertaining read that pulled me in right away. This book was fast-paced and addictive—perfect when you’re in the mood for something steamy with a touch of suspense.
I really enjoyed the forbidden dynamic and forced proximity setup, especially how quickly the tension escalated once the FMC is pulled into Jameson’s world. The chemistry was immediate, intense, and consistently engaging, making this an easy book to fly through.
Beyond the romance, the setting added an extra layer of intrigue. Paradise Grove feels glossy and luxurious on the surface, but there’s a constant sense that something darker is lurking underneath. That tension kept me turning pages and made the story feel more than just a standard spicy romance.
Overall, this was a solid 4-star read for me—perfect for readers who enjoy quick, spicy romances, powerful MMCs, and stories filled with secrets and temptation. A great introduction to a new series, and one I’d recommend if you’re looking for something fun, fast, and addictive.
We meet innocent Mia, who is a teacher for the summer at an elite school. She doesn't really question why she only has a handful of students or why there are armed guards everywhere. She has a strong bond with Franny, one of her favorite students. Her handsome dad, Jameson picks her up every day from school. One day, an attack at the school happens, her & Franny get pushed into a hidden secret room & then whisked away to Mr. Jameson Knights mansion. Mia has absolutely no idea what is going on, other than she doesn't want to go or be there, but her loyalty to Franny wins her over, she agrees to remain her teacher & nanny for the summer. We get some forced proximity although the mansion is huge. We have thick tension whenever Mia and Jameson whenever these two exchange words.
She learns this man is powerful (MAFIA) & Secret Society), dangerous and demanding and it just makes her more defiant towards him. I love that she found friends who are the best feisty women from the previous books.
Secrets are spilled, plants are talked to, spice is given. This is a feel-good mafia romance.
This book was AMAZING and honestly deserves more than five stars. If you’ve been curious about dark romance or mafia romance but feel intimidated, this is such a good place to start. Dark romance isn’t usually my thing, and past reads in this genre really turned me off, but this one completely surprised me. The darker elements were handled with class, not just shock value, and that made all the difference.
And can we talk about Jameson? Because single dad trope done RIGHT. This man would literally burn the world for his family, and I loved every second of it. Protective, devoted, and emotionally grounded. He’s easily one of my favorite MMCs.
What really sold this book for me was the plot and the twists. Everything felt intentional, well paced, and not overwhelming. Each character had a purpose. Mia and Franny completely stole my heart. Mia loving Franny like her own daughter was such a beautiful reminder that family isn’t always about blood. The side characters also added so much charm and depth to the story.
I went in nervous and came out obsessed. No other way to say it, this is a SOLID 5 STAR
Okay, Paradise Grove is giving me “rich people problems but make it deadly” and I am HERE for it.
We’ve got: - A billionaire enclave that looks picture-perfect but is dripping with scandal. - Jameson Knight, the broody single dad with dangerous secrets and a jawline sharp enough to cut glass. - The teacher who suddenly gets pulled into his dark little world when bullets start flying on the playground.
What starts out as a “temporary nanny” gig quickly turns into “oops, I’m falling for the forbidden, possessive, protective, and very dangerous man who might ruin me”.
The tension? Off the charts. The spice? Decadent. The secrets? More layered than a tiramisu.
It’s Desperate Housewives meets 365 Days meets “don’t go in the mansion’s basement.” I devoured this like a guilty pleasure and I’m not even sorry about it.
Shain Rose, you just gave me a new obsession. Paradise Grove, I will be back.
I have been obsessed with Shain Rose’s dark billionaire worlds and I was giddy to get my hands on an early copy of the new Kept in Paradise that has cameos of some of out favorite characters (Pink obviously) from her previous books.
When Mia accepts a job at a small but luxurious school, she never expected for her whole life to change. But when morally gray billionaire, Jameson, enters the picture I think anyone might start questioning their values. One of my favorite aspects of the story is the way that Jameson and Mia’s grew as it wasn’t instalove and it wasn’t easy, but it felt worth it for the reader. I’m also a sucker for kids in books and Franny may be top 10 all time book kids.
If you like Rina Kent, JT Geissinger, or Luna Mason you definitely need to take a trip to Paradise Grove (and might as well take a detour down Shain Rose’s backlist while you’re at it)!
Thank you Shain Rose & Kensington Books for the physical ARC!
𝘽𝙚𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙙 𝘾𝙡𝙤𝙨𝙚𝙙 𝘿𝙤𝙤𝙧𝙨 had me hooked from the start. The chemistry was intense, the emotions ran high, and I could not put it down. 𝙎𝙝𝙖𝙞𝙣 𝙍𝙤𝙨𝙚 really knows how to write relationships that feel 𝙢𝙚𝙨𝙨𝙮, 𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙡, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙥𝙡𝙚𝙩𝙚𝙡𝙮 𝙖𝙙𝙙𝙞𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚.
I loved how the tension built between the characters — every interaction felt charged, and watching their walls slowly come down was so satisfying. 𝙏𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚’𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙜𝙨𝙩, 𝙥𝙖𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙤𝙣, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙫𝙪𝙡𝙣𝙚𝙧𝙖𝙗𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙖𝙡𝙡 𝙬𝙧𝙖𝙥𝙥𝙚𝙙 𝙩𝙤𝙜𝙚𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧 𝙞𝙣 𝙖 𝙬𝙖𝙮 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙟𝙪𝙨𝙩 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙠𝙨.🤌🏻

*I was given this book as an eArc but my review is based solely on my own thoughts and opinions*
My heart fluttered a lot in this book which is my fav reaction. I love the serious touch her and die moments, the obsession. It was the right amount of dark for a mafia romance in my opinion.
I would have liked my background, like who is his brother? How did he meet his found family (some answered, the were neighbors, but I would have liked more information)
I would have given it a 5 if it weren’t for the mfc. She annoyed me for the majority of the book. For a teacher, she sure did act childish a lot and so nosey and in their business. She’s talking about trust but hasn’t been fully honest with him, such a hypocrite. She didn’t deserve Jameson…..I do hahaha jk jk.
I’m curious to see what the next book dives into, prob her sister and one of the guys (I can imagine who).
I really enjoyed the pacing of this book, once it started, it didn’t let go. And honestly, who doesn’t love a billionaire mafia boss? The protective elements, especially the idea of guarding “what was his,” were done so well and added depth to the story. The relationship between Jameson and Franny was tender and emotionally grounded. Watching their connection unfold on the page was beautiful and heartfelt, and it made their moments together feel earned and genuine. The third-act conflict did move a bit quickly, and I found myself wishing it had been explored just a little more. That said, it didn’t take away from my overall enjoyment of the story. This was an amazing read and absolutely one I’ll be recommending to friends. Thank you to NetGalley and the author for the opportunity to read and review this ARC.
