I'll admit, the main reason that I wanted to read this book because the MC is a "dental surgeon."

That's not the only reason, I swear! How could I resist a BDSM book with a wheelchair-bound main character?! I couldn't. I read my fair share of BDSM and this book just called to me.

I really wish this book delivered.

I'll write a more in depth review later, but I'm not going to be able to recommend this one to anyone other than super die hard BDSM junkies who will probably already be reading this. It just didn't have the spark to light my fire.

Sadly, bad editing/proofreading in the last 40% affects my rating. It's a bad, bad thing when Jake suddenly becomes Jade, and Kade becomes Kate. It really distracted me from the story, as I started to think the two couples in the book, m/m and m/m, were originally planned to be f/m and f/m. How is it possible that books with this kind of mistakes get published? These mistakes should be corrected as soon as possible! I'll change my rating when that has been done, but until then, this is how this Sadly, bad editing/proofreading in the last 40% affects my rating. Finding a BDSM story with a main character in a wheelchair was unexpected. I really liked this one and was so happy for Kaden when he finally found the yin for his yang, the Master who is worth his submission.

The author did a wonderful job of conveying the heart and soul of these two guys, and when the heat turns up, it gets damn hot! The BDSM scenes are intense, the vanilla sex is tender and passionate. Kaden is really sweet. He pretty much has his life together – he is a successful dental surgeon with everything set up to accommodate his disability. He seems to have, as best as can be expected, come to grips with his situation. He is in a wheelchair, legs paralyzed after almost dying at the hands of his homophobic attackers. But, it’s only his legs that don’t work. Before the accident, he was a sub; after, nobody wanted anything to do with him. But he was determined that he could still be a good sub, even given his limitations. Luckily, he eventually meets Deacon, a dom who sees Kade’s potential right from the get go.

Deacon isn’t like the other doms. He isn’t so much into the club scene, instead looking for someone to have a relationship beyond the dom/sub aspect, although not 24/7. He is mature and even a bit formal, but these guys seem perfect for each other, almost too perfect. Deacon bends over backwards to make accommodations for Kade, anticipating his needs, finding new ways for him to submit, etc. I loved this aspect of the story and watching it all play out.

These guys move fast, but, under the circumstances, I thought it was understandable. Kade was longing for a dom yet was afraid to even step foot back inside the club where so many turned away from him. Then, Deacon comes along, a guy who is not only interested but seems too good to be true in all other ways. That said, I didn’t enjoy how quickly they jumped into the roles of “boy” and “sir,” as it just felt a bit over the top so soon in their relationship.

I had a lot of trouble trying to picture how Kade did things. Aside from not being able to see how he performed surgery while sitting in a chair, he often moved around in ways I found disbelieving for someone who had no use of their legs. His biggest issue was his self-worth and his ability to submit to someone as well, or in as satisfying a way, as other fully functional subs. I would have liked to have seen more about his dealing with his disability, how he mentally overcame what happened, as it felt as though we missed a very important part of his recovery.

One other aspect that bothered me a tiny bit was how much time was spent with Kade worrying about Deacon getting tired of accommodating him. That Deacon would dump him before long, etc. While certainly a plausible worry, it just came up too many times not to become tiresome.

However, this was a really sweet story that had many refreshing aspects to it, especially concerning the BDSM. As I said earlier, it was great to see the various ways Deacon found to make their sessions work. He did everything possible to make it physically easier for Kade to submit. They even play with Kade’s friend and fellow sub, Jake, and his dom, Sam, which I absolutely loved in this instance. It was all a part of healing for Kade, from renewing his friendship, to allowing other people (a dom specifically) to see him submit now that he is different. These scenes were very well done.

I’m a bit picky at this point when it comes to my BDSM stories, and while I didn’t have any issues with the BDSM aspects of this one, the other things didn’t wow me. But, if you’re new to the BDSM readership, I think you will most likely love this story.

His self-image has been severely reduced after the gay bashing that paralyzed his legs, and he fervently believes no Dom will ever be interested in him again. He’s got a few memories about actual rejections, and they totally color his world view. When he first meets Deacon, Kaden can’t believe the man is interested. As time passes and they get to know each other better, Kaden still doesn’t understand, and tells himself not to hope. He is so afraid of his own “shortcomings”, as he sees them, he ends up blind to the facts right in front of him. I was totally pulled into his head and found the insights about his situation fascinating. Tempeste O’Riley has done her research well to portray such a realistic picture of what some men in a wheelchair might think and feel.

Deacon is a demanding Dom, but he is also very clear about the point of a D/s relationship. At least for him, it is more the spirit of the idea than the actual reality. Deacon is also a man who is able to look beyond the physical, and he truly sees Kaden the man, not Kaden “the cripple”. As he sets out to explore his feelings for Kaden, he encounters barrier after barrier, and I have to say, I gave him credit for having the patience of a saint. Or maybe he was just stubborn and determined. Either way, he just keeps chipping away at Kaden’s self-imposed resistance, and I cheered him on all the way.

If you like reading about D/s relationships where the psychology between the two men is as important as the physical aspect, if you want to find out what it can be like to be paralyzed and in a wheelchair while dealing with your needs as a sub, and if you’re looking for a read that is interesting, a sweet romance, and full of hot sexual tension, then you will probably enjoy this novel.

Don't know how to say this politely: I was bored to tears by this book. Sadly it was an Audio and those are hard to skim. 2 ½ stars because maybe it was me. ;-(

Rather than a BDSM book this seems to be a primer on the ways one should behave towards the differently abled and the do's & don'ts of a kink relationship. 3 stars. I wanted to love this book. I really, really did but it just fell so completely flat for me unfortunately. The story line was lackluster and didn't live up to its expectation at all. All the elements were there for me to really enjoy this but I'm just 'blah' about it.

Besides this being M/M BDSM ~~which, um hell yes! give me all of that fam!~~ the main character is in a wheelchair. Hurray for disability rep!! Love it! That was what really pushed me into picking this up because from what I've 3 stars. I wanted to love this book. I really, really did but it just fell so completely flat for me unfortunately. I'm not in a wheelchair, I walk with the assistance of a cane but I still cannot speak for how well done the rep for people in wheelchairs was here but I thought it was tastefully done. For the most part anyways.

Bear with me I have a lot of feelings about this book.

The characters I liked. I enjoyed Kade and Deacon but their relationship was just kinda 'meh' to me. It was repetitive and boring. It went like this for the entire book:

Kade doesn't think he's good enough for Deacon because he's in a wheelchair. Deacon shows and tells him otherwise.

Kade thinks Deacon will get tired of him because he's in a wheelchair. Deacon shows and tells him otherwise.

Rinse and repeat 100000x until the end of the book. It got old really fast. I get it, I do, because those are honest concerns but Deacon never treated Kade as a burden. He never said or did anything harmful to Kade to make him think that way. It made me lose interest in the story. I did like them as characters though and I really liked their friends Jake and Sam. I wouldn't mind reading a story about those two.

Also, this skips out on the smut. Ummmm......excuse me? I came for the smut and I get maybe three freaking scenes?? What a rip off! It would set up for smut and then fade to black. I was not pleased nor amused. Plus, the writing isn't that good either. It's really basic and this needed to be edited.

Overall, I'd say skip this one. Three stars for the disability rep and bringing that to the forefront but other than that this was nothing special. ...more

Bland, that's what comes in mind when thinking of this book. I think it's great that it is about a disabled sub and tries to show that it doesn't keep someone from following their wants and desires and I give one star for that.

I couldn't wait to get my hands on this book. I preorded it some time ago and was so excited when I was finally able to download it. I loved the idea of a disabled submissive. Disabilities in the BDSM world are often overlooked because we all seem to want our heroes physically perfect.

Kade... God, I wanted to just wrap him up and... well, torment him. ;) He'd been through so much shit. I was thrilled to see him find Deacon and finally be able to serve again.

The relationship between Deacon and Kade felt very formal. Deacon is a very formal person and Dom. The way they address each other is kinda stiff. As a result there doesn't seem to be any scorching chemistry between them.

I like damaged characters and Kade provides that here but the contrast with too-perfect Deacon is too much. I mean there was not ONE thing wrong with him, never a doubt, nothing.

Caged Sanctuary, by Tempeste O’Riley, is a beautiful love story between two men who wasn’t sure if they would ever have the partner they needed. This is about one man’s journey finding acceptance, love, and something he craves above all else, submission. You will see his fears from past and present that he faces daily. Confined to a wheelchair for the rest of his life, Kade Thorn, feels his life is doomed. He is an intelligent doctor, financially secure, yet the one thing he wants, he knows he will never have. He sees no hope of ever finding a Dom who will cherish and love him, for him, instead only seeing him as a cripple.

Kade was in an accident that left him wheelchair dependent and even though he thrives with his dental practice and being self-sufficient, he no longer sees himself as a worthy sub. His ex-Dom, repeatedly, verbally abused and damaged him emotionally. He is a broken man, mentally. He has low self-esteem and is very insecure. He sees himself as undesirable and worthless for any Dom so he doesn’t even try. Even after his life-altering accident he continues to be kicked when down. It doesn’t matter if he is the one kicking himself.

Tricked into a dinner party, Deacon James, goes anyway to be with friends. Socializing was all he planned on doing when he got there but one look at Kade and he was instantly attracted. Talking to Kade, he immediately picks up on the signs and the behaviors that signal he is a sub. Tempeste O’Riley has paired two characters that need each other more than they realize. Kade constantly battles his inner demons that tell him he is worthless. He feels that he is always being judged by his wheels and not for the man he is. Deacon doesn’t pay any attention to his wheelchair. He sees passion and fire in his eyes when he talks of being a sub. Deacon wants Kade for his boy, but first he needs to learn of his limits and boundaries. Being in a wheelchair will create problems, however, Deacon is willing and excited to find alternatives in order to have Kade’s submission.

When Deacon presents his solution to Kade he can’t believe Deacon would want him. No one has ever wanted him since his accident. Kade thrives submission, and his sole purpose is to be diligent and devoted to a Dom. With careful planning and a lot of love, attention, and care, Deacon can have everything he has ever wanted. Kade can have everything he has ever wanted. But to make it work, Deacon will have to convince Kade of his worth and value and show him he is everything any man or Dom could ever want.

The author handles Kade’s situation, beautifully. He is damaged goods, according to him, and she paired him with a character that was so loving, trustworthy, and full of compassion. She never rushed their relationship. They took their time getting to know each other before they ever proceeded to the D/s side of their agreement. They have their first sexual encounter a week after they meet, but during that week, a lot of planning and preparing took place.

I thought the execution of the plot flowed smoothly giving each person a chance to feel secure before they jumped with both feet. The secondary characters, whether they are friends with Deacon or Kade, are vital in this story. They offer valued friendship and support and are always there to lend an ear or shoulder if needed.

Sometimes, Kade had tendencies to come across aggressive or temperamental with Deacon which I thought seemed a little out of character for him considering he was so passionate and soft-spoken in his submissive state. There is BDSM for those who are squeamish. But, with that said, this is not a story of a sub being tied up and gagged. This is a love story between two people who take whatever steps necessary to please the other and give them back their own power. It is a sincere, well thought out story that the author handled very much appropriately giving two men their happy ever after. ...more

I have read a couple of this author’s other work and I have always enjoyed her stories, so I was really excited to read her newest book. I’m really glad that I did.

Kade is a respected dental surgeon and he’s got his practice and a great best friend. Kade has even tried to have a vanilla relationship, however, that didn’t work out as he was an ASSHAT. Kade is just so sweet, kind and so very lovable. I just wanted to wrap him up in my arms and let him know that he was loved.

Deacon James…I really liked this guy. He saw someone that he wanted (Kade) and went after him. I love that Deacon is this really successful guy who is a partner in an architectural firm and yet, he’s got this really caring or nurturing side to him. He is a Dom…there is no doubt about it and yet, he’s caring and thoughtful and just so darn romantic. I really like how he wanted Kade so much and how hard he worked to take in Kade’s limitations regarding the physical part of their D/s relationship. How he worked to help Kade work on his self worth and to show him that he meant EVERY WORD that he spoke. Deacon is this really great guy. I really liked his personality and his perseverance in letting Kade know just how he felt about him and just how very special he was.

Now, there are some very nice intimate scenes (i.e. sexy times) in this book. These intimate moments were in turns hot and sexy and yet, they were also a reaffirmation of their commitment to each other. You have to have ABSOLUTE TRUST in the person that you’re with in order to do the things that you’re doing. Safe Sane and Consensual are not just words…they are the main tenet of the BDSM Community and it was very apparent in this book. I like the research that the author put into this book. Especially in regards to Deacon coming up with ways to allow Kade to sub for him in a way that wouldn’t hurt him and that allowed him to feel cherished.

This book had me all over the place. My heart hurt so much for Kade. I hurt for him that he was gay bashed. I hurt that his feelings about himself, his self worth…that just tore me up inside. It hurt my heart how he didn’t believe that someone could love him the way he is. I loved Deacon’s attitude and the way that he asked for help when he was unsure. I really liked these two characters together. They really completed each other. They each had what the other needed/craved in a partner. I’m sad that we didn’t get to see them going through counseling and seeing Kade work through some of his issues, but I liked the way it ended.

The secondary characters in this book were really great. I liked how Katie has been with Kade for years and is in fact his best friend. I really loved that even though he has never told her about his kinky side, that she has always been a support for him and truly wants the best for him. I loved Sam and Jake. I loved how Jake and Kade actually knew each other before his accident and that they had the chance to reconnect with each other. I liked how Sam was a wonderful sounding board for Deacon to use in his quest to make sure that he was doing the right things for Kade. I loved that each of these characters loved and supported the MC’s and showed it in various ways. They really helped bring the story and our MC’s closer together.

I will say that this story isn’t very angsty and that bothered me a bit. I felt that there could have been more. I felt that delving a bit more into Kade’s attack and his subsequent loss of his legs. I would have liked to see more of them in counseling and see if there had been progress made in Kade’s self worth…but those are things that would have made it a deeper story for me.

So this was a very interesting premise: a sub who's a proud and independant man except being paraplegic and chair-bound, and a considerate, inventive Dom who can look past the chair at the man. So far, so good. And the story took a honest effort to show that a disabled man can still be and do whatever he wants to, even play an active role in the BDSM community (view spoiler)

I liked some aspects of this story just fine, like the enterprising ideas Deacon came up with for Kade, and his seemingly endless patience when it came to Kade's many, varied and very comprehensible hangups and fears.

But.

Actually, I had a whole number of buts that in the end almost outweighed the good and sadly, my buts were all related to the story itself.

For one, Deacon. Uber-dom, superhuman, unfailing and on top of it all, insanely rich and (view spoiler)
As much as he might declare his interest in Kade as a man and sub, I never quite bought it. My feeling of Deacon throughout the story was of an overgrown, very intelligent kid with a shiny new toy that he'll still tire of sooner or later and throw away.
Perhaps one of the reasons why I never really believed in either Deacon's sincerity about Kade or the genuineness of their bond.

Because Kade didn't actually have nor, in fact, make much of a choice. He was totally starved for affection, so he fell helplessly for the first man who showed him any, in fact, steamrollered him with it. Even though the only (on-page) villain in the book, Kade's ex, supposedly made an appearance as some kind of Deacon's negative counterpart, it did't work. To me, the whole Deacon/ Kade thing had a vague Stockholm syndrome feeling to it that made me decidedly uncomfortable.

So, while this book wasn't a complete miss for me, it wasn't the hit I hoped it would be. I can recommend it as a novelty read for the unusual premise, but as for both the romantic relationship and the BDSM content, it left me somewhat wanting.

***update after translating***:

While reading this book way back when I didn't really notice the overly formal, stilted dialogue. However, I sure did so while translating. Good grief, I was sweating bullets conveying THAT into somewhat readable German!

Hmm... Some Spoilers

Well, I did not pay close attention to the synopsis of this story because I am soooooooo not into BDSM and this story solidified my dislike of the genre.

The story is well written but Kade and Deacon's relationship happened way too fast. They were saying, "I love you" days after meeting. And the term 'boy' got on my last freakin nerve, but Kade did seem like a boy, not a man.

This story was fabulous. I loved Deacon and Kade. There was so much emotion in this story. I felt everything with the characters. I enjoyed watching Deacon show Kade he was worthy of the attention and love he gave. Kade was so hurt from past experiences he didn’t know his own worth. Loved this! I've read some of Tempeste's books before and really enjoyed them, so when I saw this book and read the blurb, I immediately bought it! It is a bundle of tropes I enjoy, so getting it was a no-brainer and I was not disappointed!
