Astrid's Description: I am stronger, faster, and better than anyone. I am a kick ass girl that can, and will beat up anyone that tries to tell me to do something I don't want to do. Not to mention that even though I am SO much sexier than all the other girls, I have managed to only have sex with one guy in an alien race where it is not frowned upon to have multiple partners. Did I forget to tell you that I can kick your ass and everyone else's too? Come at me!

This is a mostly negative review, so allow me to say, that the concept of the book was fantastic and that was really what kept me reading. The execution, however, was poor.

You can bet your fine butt that I have a word list for this one too (if you are on Goodreads, I have written a review for the previous book too). This time I started at 50.

Now that you have been updated on the overused words list, how about we jump into other bits that bother me?

You know, I am just going to give you what I highlighted and then say why at the end of each one.  By the way, I am not sure why kindle changed using page and location randomly in the same book. I am just as confused as you.

““No. We can share the room. Isn't that a breach of security, though?”
“My security team has already done a check on you...””
*source: Shiftless by Sarah Kay Carter ebook location 247

but in the next chapter he asks:
“Who's your grandfather?”
*source: Shiftless by Sarah Kay Carter ebook pg. 5

Her grandpa is a well-known leader of the Neturu (the alien species) guard for thirty years. He would come up in the granddaughter's background check and the guy would have been notified.

“I can't believe Ben didn't tell you I was coming. He said he wanted it to be a surprise.”
*source: Shiftless by Sarah Kay Carter ebook pg. 15
Those two sentences do not make sense together. They are written right next to each other like that, and it is the same person speaking... I am thinking the author meant to have Claire say “I can't believe Ben didn't tell me you were coming." and then have Alex say “He said he wanted to surprise you.”

“Damien grab a t-shirt off the bed and slide it on.”
*source: Shiftless by Sarah Kay Carter ebook pg. 26
Yeah, umm... grammar anyone?

“The dining area is full of teenagers when they get there. Claire instinctually pulls Alex tight against her, because the room is now full of teenagers.”
*source: Shiftless by Sarah Kay Carter ebook pg. 27

She repeats herself and while we are on that one, here are more that have the same problem.

“Cheers erupt from down below from down below.”
*source: Shiftless by Sarah Kay Carter ebook pg. 238

“You'll rock as a leader of our people...” then he says something, and she follows up with “I think you will be an awesome leader,”
*source: Shiftless by Sarah Kay Carter ebook pg. 288
End of repeats, mostly because I am sick of writing them out.

“Nearly everything is sleek and black. There are pops of hot pink and a few other bright colors.”
*source: Shiftless by Sarah Kay Carter ebook pg. 335

That is the entire description we get for Clarie's bedroom. Can anyone tell me what the author means by “everything”? Are the walls, bed, and carpet black? Does she have any other furniture in her room? Is that black or is that the “pop” of color? If it isn't the pop of color, then what is? Does she have random shapes on her, maybe black walls, that are colorful? Does she have decorative pillows that are the supposed “pop” of color? Anyone out there know, because the author has NO idea, and she is the one that wrote it.

“Mr. Blakely takes the table from Mr. Grandin.”
*source: Shiftless by Sarah Kay Carter ebook pg. 434
I believe she meant to say tablet, since one, a table is a bit difficult to hand someone and two, Mr. Grandin had a tablet not a table before this sentence. This mishap in words happens several times. Also, I thought, though I may be wrong, that an editor was credited for this book... how was this stuff overlooked? And was it an editor who missed it or the author who did not listen to the editor?

So last few things to mention in quick succession. Characters yell at random times.

We are repeatedly told that Claire hates someone and wants to hurt or kill him, 8 times in 3 pages. We get it; he is scum and you really want him to go away. Okay?

Claire goes from not shy (works out in a sport bra and shorts/ wears a “tiny hot pink bikini”) to feeling like it is not appropriate for her to be in her bra and underwear around someone that has seen her in less.

Oh, and because this is an alien race, and they must be different than humans, they “mature” faster than humans. However, they also act childish by starting fights when unnecessary and go looking for someone to make them jealous and upset, that is real mature guys.

Last thing, why is it that the gay guy in the book is a styreotype? Here are the few things he says.

““Shut your mouth, girlfriend!" Felix yells snapping his fingers.”
*source: Shiftless by Sarah Kay Carter ebook pg. 360

““Master Damien,” Felix starts, “is hot as hell. The rumors are true. Wow, baby, You're gorgeous.”
*source: Shiftless by Sarah Kay Carter ebook pg. 343

““What?” Felix gasps. “Woman...I'm jealous. You didn't just snag yourself a hottie but a royal, at that.”
*source: Shiftless by Sarah Kay Carter ebook pg. 343

Maybe this bugs me because I have several gay friends and maybe one acts like the streyotype. The rest are regular men that are attracted to other men. You get what I am saying?

Anyway, as with the first book, and as I stated earlier, the premise is what kept me going. Oh, and I want to add the author did some creative additions by taking bits from other paranormal characters and fit in her story. I quite enjoyed that surprise. You'll see what I mean if you read this.

I read this book a few months ago while my son was in the hospital. I had read the first book and liked it but didn't write a review. Still new to the whole voicing my opinion in writing. I think alot of people get hung up on the fact that authors should be flawless and that's not true. I enjoyed Shift and I kept in mind that Shift and Shiftless are YOUNG adult or teen fiction. No character is perfect, right, flawless, or even real. Just like people have personalities, or lack there of, so do fictional characters. Personally, I liked all the characters and I'm excited for a third novel. I started reading young adult fiction to keep up with my 15 year old daughter and keep an eye on what she is mentally consuming. Believe me there are far worse things to read then an intelligent, witty, beautiful girl that is enamored with hot guys. What teen girl isn't? The first book was a little shakey and I assume it was because the author was getting her feet wet. The second was alot better and I'm glad I stuck with it. Would definitely recommend to my daughter and any of her friends!

********** Contains Spoilers**********

I’ve read this book, and series multiple times since purchased back in 2016 but have never gotten around to posting a review so here goes. I enjoyed this book and thought Claire and Damien were great together, instant attraction and connection that turns into more. Claire doesn’t want anything to do with Neturu society, apart from her brother Ben and his two friends Alex and Felix due to Claire only being able to shift into a bunny rabbit, and that’s even hard enough to do on the odd occasion. Claire’s Grandpa is Kaleb Hendrickson and the leader of Neturu’s Guard for the last 30 years, and her mother is Lana Livingston one of Neturu’s best historians. Claire’s Grandpa has been training her to fight since she was little, she’s now an extreme fighter as well as extremely strong, especially when she’s angry. She’s really proud of her body and an her accomplishments but it comes across as completely full of herself most the time.

Alex and her went on a camping retreat kind of thing, just them two where they ended up kissing that eventually lead to more. Claire ended up shutting her energy down in the heat of the moment so she had to tell him about her shifting issues and that she can’t go into Shima (Neturu plain where they can replenish their energy). Alex took it all in her stride. They spoke a lot over the last six months since their night together but they haven’t spoken about what happened between them both. Ben would go after Alex if he ever found out. Claire’s parents are making her go to gathering of Neturu teens, which she really didn’t want to, as she’s worried that she’ll be made fun of if anyone found out about her shifting issues. Claire’s planning just to eat and then spend time in her room as Ben gave her his laptop to borrow. Her Grandpa paid for a suite and it isn’t until she’s hopped out of the shower and a extremely hot guy is in her room.

He tells her that this is his room as he got given a key and explained who he is but he’ll go down now to sort it out and he’ll knock when he comes back. The room is double booked and both of them don’t have anyone else to stay with since Damien’s friends all have roommates and Claire only knows her brother and his two friends. Damien gets her out and about. I liked how she didn’t mind calling Damien on his sh*t and treated him like everyone else. Well after she got over their initial meeting when she found out who he was she was calling him by his title. Damien and her go to one of the fighting workshops and Alex ends up being the teacher. She’s really happy to have her friend back. This is the moment that Damien finds out what an amazing fighter she is, as he’s worried when Alex wants to spare with her as he’s a Guard member. Claire tells him to just watch and he can call it off during it if he’s worried that she’ll get hurt.

Alex keeps on trying to talk to Claire about what happened. He wants more from her but she’s confused so she ends up leading him on. She could tell Damien and Kayla that she didn’t know if she wanted more with Alex and Ben would k*ll him when he found out. After Damien found about Claire’s shifting issues Claire tells him that she likes Alex and he knows about her issue and didn’t judge her. Damien gives her really sound advice and tells her to tell him that she needs more time since he just sprung it on her out of the blue, and that she shouldn’t judge whether or not to be with him because of him being okay with her lack of shifting as others may accept it as well. It’s also really obvious that she has feelings for Damien and Damien for her, the feelings scare her but she thinks that he wont be able to ever be with her because of who he is, and he needs to bring a strong shifter into his line. He tells her that it doesn’t matter as it depends on who he ends up falling in love with, the Council doesn’t have a say in who he marries.

Damien is really understanding when Claire tells him what the issue is and he tells her that he’s really trained on Neturu energy so he’ll help to see if he can work out why she can’t shift. I liked seeing how much Damien has grown in the last year since everything went down with him and Kayla. He was completely full of himself and I didn’t really like him that much. I’m glad that Kayla is now his best friend and him Jackson (his cousin and Kayla’s boyfriend) get along great, when they used to hate each other. I enjoyed getting more of Kayla and Jackson. Claire finally gets the answers about why it’s extremely hard to shift and that she can’t go into Shima. Man, Claire’s mum really doesn’t like Damien and she’s definitely where Claire gets her outspoken personality from. Yes, this is a very insta-love book but when it’s alien’s from another planet why can’t they be fated mates. I’m really looking forward to reading the next book, especially after seeing the mission Claire is being sent on next. I’d definitely recommend this book, series and author.

Amazing follow up to Shift! I love the addition of new characters! Ever wonder what happened with Damien after shift? Well now you get to find out! This book has unexpected twists and a great fast paced story line! I love books with strong women and wasn't disappointed!!! If you're siting on the fence about buying this I recommend taking the plunge! Although you don't really have to read Shift first, I would recommend it to get the full appreciation of this story!

Loved it!

I almost didn't read this because of the style the book is written; however I powered through that and am so glad I did! Great story, awesome twists and sweet love story woven into the badas* ness :) well done! I didn't read book one, which explains Kaylas story, but it didn't mess this one up or confuse me so yeah.

* once again, I didn't realize this was book 2 ( don't know how I managed that. Again.)

I think this book was even more fantastic than the first one. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the characters and the problems the MC was facing were original. THe story took twists and turns that I didn't see coming. If you are a shifter fan or YA paranormal romance lover, this book is a must read! Five glittery stars for being such a well written book!

Pure Magic!!!

At last, a beautiful new series that shows what love and true romance can be. A LOT of sexual tension without the graphic bedroom scenes that many authors depend upon to fill up the pages. This is the second book of the Neturu series. Such a good writer!!!
