From Abba to ZZ Top, from the birth of rock and roll in the 50's to the hybrid music of the present day, Rock & Roll Year By Year is the definitive guide to the music that influenced generations and helped shaped history. Meticulously written to cover key stories of every year in every decade with insights into the seminal artists and music of the times, this is the only full-color guide that details all the major events in the first fifty years of rock and roll. Co-founders of Original Media and www.musicinformationdatabase.com, creators/executive producers of CNN's global music series, "World Beat" and "The Music Room", Luke Crampton and Dafydd Rees have written more than 20 books about popular music, including DK's Encyclopedia of Rock Stars.
Haven't finished the whole 600 pages but read as much as I was interested in. Fuller review will appear in time. This book goes through from the 1950s up to 2002. I lost interest about 1980, which is nothing to do with the book but more my musical taste. It was interesting to see how Rock and Roll started and the criticism that came from some quarters, especially when I looked at what some of the songs and singers of the time were. It was also interesting at times to look at the difference between US charts and the UK charts. I have to say I would have been interested to see how Australian charts compared. I think this is a book people will dip into as interest takes them rather than read it cover to cover as it is a weighty tome. Interesting to look at the changes in music over the years. Being an Elvis fan from way back my eye was automatically drawn to any entry that mentioned him.
Enchanting a period 1950 -2002, this picturesque illustrated book is a visual masterpiece reflecting at a rock&roll history passed. A quarter century on, a new chapter begs for being added surely.
This was a very exhaustive look at rock and roll music year by year. I thought it was very good- I learned a lot (for example, did you know that Dave Navarro and Flea played on Alanis Morrisette's "You Oughta Know"?) Im a music geek and I love stuff like that.
Lots of great details ,anectodes ,the pictures are fabulous BUT as you get toward the 90's you wonder what really is the book about...Madonna ? Eminem? Moby? Not much Rock
