Act As If: Stumbling Through Hollywood With Headshot in Hand

Being a non-famous, working actor in Hollywood isn't easy, but it can be hilarious if you bring your attitude. Based on the popular column from Nowcasting.com's ActorsInk, the essays in "Act As If" take a humorous and very personal look at the life of a journeyman actor in Hollywood, from someone who has lived it. Mostly the hard way.

"Journeyman," as in "not a star."

This collection of essays portrays the life of a journeyman actor in Hollywood with crisp, clear language and just enough specific detail to draw the reader into Burchard’s world. Her insights and wisdom are priceless as she describes the triumphs and frustrations of auditioning and landing roles that, although perhaps not starring ones, require just as much talent and energy. Described without a shred of self-pity or whining, she nonetheless conveys a sense of this life that so many seek and at ...more

It's clear from the first page that Burchard has been there and done that and has learned from all of it.
She does more than give practical advice on what aspiring actors can do to become successful. She gives life lessons on how to avoid the pitfalls on the way to success, which may be more important - in a very honest and funny way.

This is the best book on acting and surviving in Hollywood since Michael Shurtleff’s Audition. Burchard’s writing is not only honest, but refreshingly witty. So many times I found myself laughing out loud, relating to her experiences. Act As If made me feel less alone in this business that tends to take away your dignity if you don’t keep your chin up. While reading it, I felt as if was sitting with a best friend who shared true tales about the business and the importance of selling yourself whi ...more

This is more than a book about a journeyman actor in Hollywood, these are the intensely personal stories of a woman who has lived and learned. Every essay in this book imparts not just a lesson about working as an actor, but life lessons that apply to non-actors as well. I wouldn't be surprised to see this book in the Self Help section at the bookstore, it is more universal than its title implies. Thank you for sharing your journey, Petrea!
