Nolan U Football #3

The Surprise Play

Rate this book
He's popular, charming and every girl wants to get with the hot football player…except a certain tutor who'd rather stay hidden within the safety of her books…

I've had a pretty good gig going at Nolan U. I've paid tutors to do my assignments for me and scraped by without too much hassle. But then I met Elizabeth…

She's something else, man. Not only is she refusing to do things my way, but she seems convinced that I'm capable of being more than a dumb jock. She knows I'm all about the game, but she seems to think I'm smart enough to graduate too. I've never met anyone like her and I don't know what to do.

I can't go falling for my tutor, that's way too distracting. I don't have time for a serious relationship. The NFL's gonna draft me and I'll be gone by the summer.

Besides, I have a type. And she's not it.

So why the hell can't I stop thinking about her?

Why do I want to protect her from the b*tchy girls who keep harassing her?

Why do I want the world to know that I'm off the market...and she's all mine…

The Surprise Play is a stand alone, sweet and spicy NA football romance with no cheating and a guaranteed happy ending. Perfect for fans of Kelsie Rae, Hannah Gray and Rebecca Jenshak.

4.5/5 ⭐️

These two, I can’t! They make my heart melt. I wasn’t sure how much I’d like this one just because in sneak peek we got, Wily seemed entitled to having someone doing the work for him and I’m so glad I was wrong.

Wily needs to graduate college, football’s his whole life, but he’s spent four years through hell just to play football, he might as well graduate otherwise those years all go to waste. Except he’s lost his tutor who was doing the work for him. In comes Elizabeth Satchwell, the incredibly smart, kind, and soft spoken tutor, who refuses to do the work for Wily, but will teach him and help him learn. From there a relationship that neither expected blossoms and they go through their doubts and reassurances.

Elizabeth Satchwell, I have never related to a character more than her. She’s very self conscious as she’s not the ideal body type and beauty that is sought out. She doesn’t believe she’s deserving of anything good and loving and she’s her own worse critic. God does she break my heart but I see so much of myself in her, which also breaks my own heart funnily enough. She grows so much though, with the help and reassurance of Wily, she grows confidence and finally believes she is fucking amazing and worthy of love and happiness and fuck anyone who says otherwise.

Wily, he’s a big, lovable, goofball. His life has been planned out since the day he was born by his parents. No wonder why he didn’t believe he was capable of more than just football. Elizabeth saw that though, and didn’t give up on him. The way he is with Elizabeth, he goes above and beyond to make her feel loved, comfortable, and seen. Their relationship means the world to me.

I think Grady’s book will be interesting and I’m so curious about Blake. I can’t wait for their book.

I received this ARC in return for an honest review.

How does Katy do it? Every time I pick up one of her books they keep getting better and better. Elizabeth and Wily’s story was beautifully written and I was so curious to see how their relationship would unfold. The characters were relatable. My heart went out for Elizabeth right away and my first thought was I can't wait to see Wily stand up to her bullies. Wily is very protective of the people he loves and I know Elizabeth is no expectation. Especially when she also went out of her way to help him when no one else would properly put in the effort. I think it is absolutely adorable that they make each other blush.

I love how they slowly grow a strong friendship before they both can stop thinking about wanting more with each other. I couldn't wait for the moment when they both gave into the chemistry they have been creating together. Not only did she find the perfect guy for her but she also found something else just as equally as important, an amazingly strong friendship with the other girls.

Great character development for them both, made me laugh and made me cry. I just love the found family part of Katy's stories. This book was like a nice big warm hug.

The Surprise Play by Katy Archer is book 3 in Nolan U Football series.
This story has us following the Senior student, lineman for Nolan U football team Wily Wilson and Sophomore student Elizabeth ‘Libby/Satch’ Satchwell in this Opposites Attract, Popular Jock/Shy Girl, Found Family, College Football Romance. All through the telling of their dual POVs.

Although Wily and Elizabeth were complete opposites, him the hot and funny popular football player and her the shy and quiet, keeping to herself plus size nerdy student who was also a tutor.
They couldn’t have been more perfect for each other and throughout their story you get to see and learn how and why that was the case.
All courtesy of the well written characters and story development author Katy showcased.

The emotions and the angst was high in the story, but then again that was to be expected. The only difference was where it came from, seeing as usually you expect it to come from outside the couple and their relationship.
But in this case, given the individual journeys that both Wily and Elizabeth were navigating through, it led you some angsty moments with high emotions from within. Especially seeing as the lows they ventured through.
However it helped them to face their problems, since it allowed Wily and Elizabeth to learn and grow from it. Which in the long run was good, as it helped bring them even more closer to each other than ever. Finally being able to help one another in being what the other needed.

I will say my heart hurt for Elizabeth in all that she faced, endured and suffered through in her personal individual journey. And even more so when it came to seeing how it would lead to her breaking down and falling into a downwards spiral, making it even harder for her to come out of it each time. Even though she eventually did, she never made it easy for herself.

My only critique was when it came to the subplot surrounding Elizabeth and her bullies. It may have just been me, but it could have wrapped up better than what was delivered. Only because the way it ended didn’t feel completely finished to me. Having expected and wanted a little more to it.

All in all, author Katy Archer’s latest release The Surprise Play made for a sweet, cute, yet emotional angst story that was a pleasantly enjoyable overall. Particularly in the development of Wily and Elizabeth’s relationship.
And after reading the extra epilogue, it has me excited for Grady and Blake’s story The Illicit Play next.

In my opinion this is the best one yet by Katy. I love how Wily and Satch are with each other and how he gets her to open up and see how wonderful she is. Can't wait for the next

This book was so for beyond amazing and wonderful that I don't even feel that I have the words to do it justice. Wily and Elizabeth's was absolutely EVERYTHING! This couple and their romance made my heart ache but also sent it soaring. The feelings and emotions here are thick and intense, so prepare for an emotional workout. Wily was just incredible and I truly believe that we all need (and deserve) our own Wily in our lives and Elizaeth I felt such a deep connection to that at times it almost felt like I was reading about myself. Powerful, potent, swoon worthy, sweet, funny, dramatic, and cute, this book was simply perfection.

“You are the most important person in my room. In this room. In any room I’m in.”

---ARC Review---

This was such a genuine opposites-attract story, and I really enjoyed watching Elizabeth and Wily’s relationship unfold. Their dynamic had the perfect mix of tension, heart, and humor as they slowly let their guards down with each other. I had liked Wily in earlier books of the series, but I was a little nervous going into his story; his spoiled, carefree attitude in the beginning made me wonder if I’d connect with him at all. Thankfully, his character arc was really well done. Beneath all that bravado was a deeply insecure and thoughtful person trying to figure out who he actually was. The more we got to see his internal struggle, the more relatable he became, even with the huge differences in background and privilege.

“I love the shape of your body…and that is the God-honest truth.”

Elizabeth, on the other hand, was instantly lovable. Her insecurities and the bullying she’d endured made parts of her story hard to read, but her growth was one of my favorite aspects of the book. Watching her find her confidence and finally learn to speak up for herself was so rewarding. I also appreciated how she never let Wily coast through things; she challenged him, called him out, and refused to be just another person who fed his ego. At the same time, seeing Wily be the one to stand up for her, when no one else had, was incredibly touching and made their connection feel even more meaningful.

“I hate her doubts and insecurities. I hate that she doesn’t see herself the way I do. I have to make her believe how much she means to me. How f*cking amazing she is.”

This book definitely carried more emotional weight than I expected, but not in a bad way. The angst was rooted in their personal journeys, not unnecessary drama, and it added depth to both the romance and the overall story. Wily and Elizabeth had to learn to accept and love themselves before they could fully show up for each other, and I thought that theme was handled with care and authenticity. The message around self-love and body positivity was woven in beautifully and gave the book a lasting emotional impact. It was a sweet, layered, and ultimately uplifting read that left me with a full heart. This was a true opposites attract story; the relationship between Elizabeth and Wily was fun to read as it developed.

Welcome back to Nolan U ,where Katy has done it again and where I continue to find myself saying “This one! This one is my favorite!” From the leading characters to new character introductions, followed by appearances from our favorite couples sprinkled in among such a heartwarming story, this book was unforgettable and unputdownable.

Wily and Elizabeth had such a raw connection from the beginning and it just continue to build over time. Their thoughts, actions, and banter was so beautifully written and was such a natural progression through the story that I couldn’t help but swoon along the way. They are so good for each other for so many reasons, but the one that stayed with me the most was how well they complemented each other in the sense of balance. From their personalities to their thoughts, to their humor and aspirations, these two were so heartwarming together I couldn’t help but root for them along the way. Wily and Elizabeth’s relationship is a testament and a reminder that when you find someone who can give you strength, loving them gives you courage. They both guided, protected, and reassured each other in ways that brought out the best in each other and pushed each other to be their best selves.

I didn’t think I could love another couple at Nolan U, but I was wrong. I absolutely loved this story. It made my cry and feel so many things, but most of all, this story warmed my heart. Thank You, Katy, for another amazing story ❤️ I can’t wait to see who falls next and who it is that brings them to their knees.

This was definitely an opposites attract story and I'm totally here for it.
Willy is a confident senior in college, who plays football and not doing great academically, so here comes Elizabeth Satchwell his new tutor, who would do his work for him, is a great teacher, she is sweet, compassionate and insecure.

After a rocky start, Elizabeth agrees to help tutor him only if he does all the work. He is completely intrigued by her, thinks she is cute and can't stop thinking about her lips 😘.

She has had a rough go since Junior High because of one girl which unfortunately followed her to college 😞
He quickly realizes that she is not comfortable in social situations and finds out she is being bullied, which he doesn't like and goes nuts over it.

The relationship grows slowly and Willy is just the best, knows she is not like the other girls experience wise and goes at her own pace, totally had swooning here. They have some crazy chemistry and Elizabeth likes to learn new things and Willy is all for it.
After an awesome and embarrassing Valentine's Day weekend at her family's home, things turn for the worse for both of them. After some crying and some standing up for themselves they are looking forward to what their new future looks like.

I'm so excited for Grady's story next.

Wily!

I’ve had a soft spot for this oversized human Golden Retriever goofball since I first met him in book 1 of the series - and I couldn’t be happier with how his story turned out. As many reviewers have already stated, Satch was a very relatable shero for plenty of us, and the level of bullying she had to endure - and all the self-doubts and insecurities she struggled with because of that - broke my heart. (Though Wily must have lived under a pretty ginormous rock for his whole life, if he was in fact so absolutely clueless that, yeah, people do get bullied. Every damn day. Without having done anything to deserve it.)

But I loved seeing these two grow close and fall in love and stand up for each other.

Wily and Satch’s story is so good! Wily’s such a lovable character, and after a bit of a rough start, is so sweet in his gestures towards Satch.

Satch finds her voice with Wily’s insistence that she is worthy and stronger than she gives herself credit for. She also helps him understand that he is capable of so much more than he realizes when life throws him off his plans.

Struggling with their own insecurities, together they find themselves able to overcome them with faith in each other and their relationship.

4.5. I wrote this in my previous review, but I am loving all books Archer! All the angst I thought was going to appear didn’t in the way I thought it would. And I LOVED IT!! One of my favorite things about her series is the way there are always scenes among the friend group that are unrelated to sports. We just get to see them support one another or heckle one another. Love it!

And as so many others have pointed out, Satch is such a relatable character for anyone who has struggled with insecurities of any kind. I felt like Archer plucked out my own inner dialogue and put it on the page.

Will definitely be back for Grady and Blake!! Ahhhhh!!

OMG!! I love Wily and Elizabeth!! Their story had me on an emotional roller coaster and I couldn’t stop reading. Their story is a college sports romance with tutor/popular boy trope. I love their chemistry and the way Wily pushes Elizabeth out of her comfort zone. Their protection of each other really makes the story more heartwarming. I also love how the secondary characters are always there to help each other and stick up for each other. I love their story so much and can’t help rooting for them.

I voluntarily leave an honest review of this gifted advance readers copy.

Man this one gave me all the feels. I swooned. I cried. I smiled. It was so beautiful. I don’t want to say too much and spoil it but there’s so much I want to say.
Elizabeth (Satch) is sweet, compassionate, and incredibly giving. She sees the best in people, except herself. And she has a secret. Her journey to self love was inspiring. She’s the most relatable character I’ve had the pleasure to read in a while. It was so relatable in that we are our own worst critics. And sometimes even when those around us tell us, we don’t feel it. Learning to love yourself is not easy but Satch handles herself with grace and kindness in pretty much every situation.

Wily he’s the fun loving goofball that kinda hypes everyone up and he’s so charming and sweet you can’t help but fall for him almost immediately. He’s fiercely loyal and protective of his own and we get to see him grow a little too. Learn that life doesn’t have to be just so. It’s for living. And man how sweet is that?
I loved everything about their journey, even the parts that made me ugly cry because it led to this amazing epic story. I couldn’t put it down. I was just so deep in it with them as they worked their way towards growth and healing and something beautiful. And now I look forward to Grady’s story and can’t wait to see what awaits us there.

I was curious to see how Elizabeth and Willy’s relationship would unfold. Especially after their first few interactions. I loved how gradual their friendship was. My absolutely favorite thing was the confidence they had in each other when they didn’t believe in themselves.

Wily is so charming. Friendly to everyone. A popular jock on campus. I really felt for him because he really believed he was a dumb jock. Seeing college as a means to an end to play in the NFL. With the bare minimum goal of passing to play and graduate. I love watching his confidence grow as Satch helped him figure out his learning style. Because no one ever took the time to actually help him. Let alone believe he could do it. But Satch did, and I loved watching her fight for him.

I found Satch so relatable. My heart really went out to her. Even though she was brutally bullied, she never stopped being herself. She shied away from others. As she spent more time with Wily, she realized he never judged her or made her feel bad. So he got to see the Satch only her family got to see. I loved seeing Wily’s protective side when it came to Satch. But most importantly, how he supported and encouraged her self-love journey. I loved watching her confidence grow. It wasn’t an overnight thing, and she continuously puts in the work.

The next book follows Wily’s sister, Blake, and his teammate and roommate, Grady. I can already tell Blake will be one of my favorites. She is already fascinating, and we barely know anything about her. She plays the perfect daughter role in front of her parents. The annoying younger sister to Wily. Then there is this wild side we saw between her and Grady. She is definitely going to keep Grady on his toes. Grady seems to play it safe and not take many risks. They should make for an interesting pair.

LOVED this and did not want it to end!

From the previous books I thought of Wily as the funny guy, the one that would be the life of the party, the jokester, adorable but not the kind of guy to settle down. I thought he was a also entitled and a bit selfish but it turns out I was wrong. Though he is adorable and puppy-like at times he is also emotionally mature, even more he believes. He is super sweet, sensitive and kind.

Elizabeth is also super sweet, sensitive and kind, but has had a very hard time with bullies which turned her into such a sheltered, guarded, person which was so sad.

This intelligent, introverted geek did not see Wily coming! He totally changed her entire world! He brought her out of her shell and I was so there for it! Seeing these two complement each other, bringing out the best in each other and growing together, was so wonderful to read.

This story had all the feels and I look forward to reading a little more about these two in the next book of the series. I cannot get enough of Katy's writing!

So good!

I found myself cheering Wily And Satch on all through this book! I have been bullied in my life, but I have siblings and learned to give energy for energy. But Satch was an only child to older parents, so she never learned that lesson. Author does an excellent job conveying this. Love this book, and All Author’s other book!!

ARC Review of The Surprise Play Book 3 in the Nolan U Football Series by Katy Archer. This is absolutely a 5 star read for me. I am obsessed with this book and the whole Nolan U hockey and football series. Katy Archer has definitely become one of my absolute favorite authors I just discovered her books this past January and have devoured all of them. I couldn’t wait to read this book I knew Wily was going to be my favorite and this book definitely didn’t disappoint. I love how immersive and descriptive the writing is I feel like I’m at Nolan U with the characters the emotion comes through so strong my heart breaks with the characters and then gets put back together in the best way. I always find the main characters in each book relatable to me in some way or another which is something I love about these books In this one I definitely related to Elizabeth’s shyness and the bullying she went through and I related to Wily feeling he always had to come off as this happy guy and never let his true emotions show. I love the depth of Wily and Elizabeth. I love the topics brought up in this book of bullying and learning difficulties these are tough things to go through and I felt it for the characters and love how they grow from it and deal with it. This is a College, Football, Tutor, Slow burn, Spicy Romance. This is Wily and Elizabeth’s story. Elizabeth is a sophomore at Nolan U in Colorado and Wily is a Senior he is on the football team and one of their star players he is on track to get drafted to the NFL right out of college. Wily isn’t doing well in his classes and needs a tutor that’s how he meets Elizabeth first he tries to pay her to do his assignments and she refuses then she ends up agreeing to tutor him if he will work with her and do his own work. I love that it’s not this instant love at first sight between them I like that they get to know each other by working together and create a friendship and then a relationship. Wily thinks he’s dumb and doesn’t want to try but I love how Elizabeth knows he can learn he just has to find the way that works best for him. I love how Wily helps her feel beautiful and confident and protects her and won’t let anyone hurt her. I love how Elizabeth went to bat for him with his professor to give him a second chance when she didn’t even know Wily yet she just did it because she wanted to help. I love how kind she is and how fierce and kind Wily is I love them as a couple I love them together. I can’t wait for the next book

Elizabeth (“Satch”) and Wily

This is a long one, over 600 pgs. It’s worth reading every word, every page, and really getting to know these two in depth. I thought I knew how this was going to go. That this would follow the same template as every opposites attract romance I’ve ever read. But no, this author doesn’t follow the crowd. She told a completely relatable and emotional story of two people who were going in two different directions and whose lives are the complete opposite of each other, and making it so real and so honest how naturally they fell in love.

There is going to be some comparison to Bridgerton’s Colin and Penelope (if you’re a fan), at least maybe physically. We don’t get much of a sense of Satch’s appearance except she thinks she’s fat and ugly while Wily has godlike looks. And that’s all that matters actually since her low self esteem is something she needs to confront in herself. Wily has to accept and understand her insecurities. He does an amazing job of making Satch feel loved. And she learned to trust him and believe that he’s with her for who she is and doesn’t want to change a thing about her.

They both get their HEA but there’s a soft cliffhanger regarding Wily that will be resolved in the next book (Grady’s story). I love how this author doesn’t wrap everything up in a nice neat bow at the end of every book. Life for these couples moves on and we can watch them grow and deal with adulthood after college in future books. The series is amazingly well written and you will emotionally connect with these characters like they’re good friends. I cannot wait for Grady’s and Blake’s story next.

Good read! Elizabeth is this shy girl who is a tutor, in the first chapter she is trying to get a hold of Willy who is the MMC and she is gonna tutor him, immediately it doesn’t go as planned, but they do find a way back to each other and there is this chemistry between them that eventually evolves into more.
Elizabeth being a shy girl resulted in her high school days being bullied in and those bullies followed her back to college, and there’s so many heartbreaking moments where I just wanted to hug her, but at the end she did it stood up for herself and put those mean girls into their place.

Overall, I loved the relationship between these two. They learned a lot about each other and they cared for one other so much!

I’ve read a lot from this author and seriously it never disappoints. I know very little about sports but there is something about these sport romance books that really are something. I had a hard time putting this down. My job takes a lot of my time these days so trying to fit in some reading has become harder but I do make the time and I did everything I could to seriously eat up this story. It has all the feels from anger to love to sadness and extreme happiness! Highly recommend especially to anyone who has ever been on the receiving end of some trauma cruelty from the school years. Love this book

Wily didn’t just fall for Elizabeth—he helped her see the beauty in herself that years of bullying tried to erase.

The Surprise Play by Katy Archer is a tender, emotionally rich romance that stole my heart. Elizabeth (Satch) is strong but scarred, carrying the weight of years of bullying that still chip away at her self-worth. Wily (Coyote) doesn’t just love her—he sees her. His unwavering support, patience, and quiet encouragement are everything she never knew she deserved.

Their story is raw, sweet, and full of heart. This isn’t just a love story—it’s healing in motion. Katy Archer delivers a beautiful reminder that real love doesn’t fix you, but it sure helps you feel whole.

I loved the Nolan U hockey series (give them a read if you haven’t done so) and the Nolan U football series is just as great! Every book has been 5 stars and this one is no exception! I loved Wily and Elizabeth (Satch) together and getting to see Satch come out of her shell and find true love with Wily was so great to read. I also loved that she found friendship and kindness at the Football Frat. This book had lots of angst, kindness, love, encouragement and friendship and I can’t wait to read more in this series!

3.8 stars. I liked this MUCH better than the last one. I was not a fan of H in that one. (Possible spoilers ahead)

I think everybody should be warned that h is EXTREMELY timid and insecure. There are times I wanted to shake her and tell her to get a backbone. Thankfully, she does, it’s just in the last 10% of the book

So H is a dumb jock who pays tutors to do his work. He’s not worried about college because he KNOWS he’s going to be drafted high to the NFL. His parents are super intense about “them” making it to the big time.

h has to tutor him and she’s like “FK no, I’m not doing your work for you” 🤨 he fails, then he takes his anger out on her. Realizes he was wrong. He’s a super nice guy 😩

h has a past of being extremely bullied by Jade ever since they were 10. Now Jade is at the college. Jade is a nasty POS. Jade “wants” H.

h does eventually feel sorry for H failing (after he tries to cheat and pass off an AI article) so they become friends. She helps him, and they slowly start to develop feelings. (Let me say, before h and even a bit after he meets her, his POV about women was eek. Yes! He was a major playboy. Even after meeting h, he’s still checking women out)

So Jade does bully things to h, along with her mean girl’s club. The h is the most insecure female I’ve ever read about, so it’s amped up 1000%. She won’t ever tell H about it, though.

H and h fall in love. They shag. He meets her parents. He’s actually super awesome. h is still dealing with insecurity issues BIGTIME
I was so annoyed at her insecurity.

He throws a surprise birthday party and Jade actually assaults her. There is almost a 3rd act breakup, but thankfully, h realizes she’s insecure, so she apologized the next day.

(I’m not sure why charges were not filed against Jade and her mean girl’s club) 🤷‍♀️

Then the big wtf moment happens. H gets injured, so his football career is iffy. H did not tell his crap parents about h being his girlfriend. He denies her at the hospital and said “she’s just my tutor” h starts to spiral, but she uses her brain and decides to confront him. It all works out. His parents are still 💩 though.

h finally stands up to Jade and her crew by……………..yelling at them to STFU. 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ wut? That’s it? I feel robbed!

The ONLY thing I didn’t like about this book- Jade and her crew should have been destroyed

I will admit I shed a few tears during this book. Much, much better than the previous book.

I was an ARC reader for this book. Wily has been my favorite since the first time he was on page. As a bigger girl, I was happy to read a book where the female main character was also bigger. I loved reading about them helping each others confidence grow, his with his schoolwork and wanting to graduate on his own with no help, and hers with standing up for herself and believing that she was beautiful. This might be my favorite Katy Archer book yet.

Great story!!

This is the third book in this phenomenal series, and this is Wily and Elizabeth / Satch's story.
This is a well written emotional roller coaster, with family, friendships, intrigue, insecurities, doubts, challenges, bullying, heartbreak, undeniable chemistry, and love which leads to an entertaining, heartfelt, and unpredictable addictive page turner.
I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I highly recommend.

Great!

A tutor romance is such a a vibe. Shy girl plus playboy guy. Them building each others confidence in different sectors of their lives was so well done! There was a bit of over the top mean-girl in here but it worked to expose our FMC’s feelings and move the plot so I wasn’t too annoyed by it.

I read this as a stand-alone and had no trouble jumping into the middle of the series!

TOP TIER

I have loved all Katy Archer books equally. I couldn’t ever put one above the others until this book! This is my favorite. Wiley is now a top book boyfriend! The topics in this book so resonated with me and left with all kinds of feelings. This book is amazing and will be recommending to everyone.
