My Long Playing Records is a group of short stories both gay and straight. Although I don't agree with some of the practices in the stories that is not the reason for the three star rating. The stories all seemed to have abrupt endings. They were for the most part unexpected endings, however they didn't really seem to tie the story up.

If you don't like your short stories tied up in neat little bows for you or even to have endings that are pat (truly endings) then you might enjoy this book. I fee

Won a free copy of this book through a Goodreads Giveaway and read it while traveling in California. Jespers does a great job getting into the mind of his characters and having them come alive. Some of his stories are quite touching offering a view into the world of Hispanic teenagers in Texas and gay men in Kansas. I'd say about half of the stories have something to do with aging men/women struggling with aging, the other half with younger boys struggling with growing up.

The stories are a bit o

If I could describe Richard Jespers’ debut short story collection My Long-Playing Records in one word, it would be robust. The collection comprises fifteen stories so richly imagined that each is as satisfying a read as a novel. It’s worth stressing upfront that this is not a novel-in-stories or series of linked stories, and that distinction underscores the collection’s strength. (Also worth noting is the fact that all the stories but one were previously published in quality literary journals; t ...more

The five-and-ten pieces in this treasury transport you, as the best stories always do, on brief visits to other times and places—in the company of fascinating people of varying ages and situations.

Richard Jespers knows just how to capture a zeitgeist moment in telling detail, without sentimentality. Whether it’s the recent era of hyphy car stunts in “Ghost Riders,” a privileged youngster’s recollection of a luxurious Italian cruise in “Men at Sea,” or the long, graceful arc of a glamorous old mo

My Long-Playing Records by Richard Jespers is a tight collection of 15 short stories that kept me fully engaged until the very last word. The settings are modest, familiar places, houses like ones I was in as a child, hotels from family vacations, apartments from college. As the narratives unfold, the characters reveal hidden stories and hard, sad moments that have shaped them. Just like in life, sometimes, the people let go, move on, go forward with a grain of hope. Each story is a complete exp ...more

I won my copy of this book through a Goodreads giveaway.

This is a fairly good collection of stories, some linked by the same characters, though not to the extent that the book as a whole is thematic or a novel-in-stories. I was a bit annoyed at the emphasis in many of the stories on private bodily functions, but for the most part there is not much gratuitous sex. Certainly since it is taboo to talk about medical, sexual and practical experiences of our bodies in much detail, it makes sense that
