Some good tales in issue 255 of the venerable SF magazine, and no real duds. I really liked Thana Niveau's 'The Calling of Night's Ocean', about a researcher trying to communicate with a dolphin and the unexpected consequences when this is achieved, and 'Mind the Gap' by Jennifer Dornan-Fish, also a story about communication with an AI given consciousness by use of an artificial sensorium but still unsure whether it is truly conscious. 'Oubliette' from E. Catherine Toblar is beautifully written ...more

A lower than average issue saved by a strong tale about the dangers of sensing too much by Thana Niveau and a clone of a tale by Tom Greene.

- "Must Supply Own Work Boots" by Malcolm Devlin: a servicable tale about a man with augmented machinery to build space ships that is out of a job due to obsolescence. As he makes his way to a doctor who may be able to upgrade him, he considers his current task of taking care of his daughter and wonders if it is worthwhile to give that up to get a new job.

Continues to deliver

Interzone has for many years been a source of high quality short fiction and relevant book and other media genre reviews. This edition continues the high standard and as is common includes work by new authors as well as more published ones. To me the standout story was "Mind the Gap" by Jennifer Dornan-Fish a clever new take on the old idea of what happens if/when AI is conscious. An excellent read.
