Ed returns to Resembool and meets his father Hohenheim for the first time in many years. Although his father is happy to see him, Ed harbors intense feelings of resentment for being all but abandoned many years ago. However, anger gives way to intrigue as Ed and Al discover an important fact about the human transmutation ritual they attempted years before. What they thought was a partial resurrection of their mother was something else entirely - a revelation that could change their destiny forever.

"You did it because you didn't want to be reminded of your mistake! You wanted to escape from the painful memories. You thought you could erase all traces of your actions, didn't you?"

This volume was quite good. As Ed finds the truth about the body he had summoned and all his resolved are strengthened and he even contacts his teacher and then he meets his bro in Central and then there is this great resolve and camaraderie between them where they promise each other to get their original bodies back and yeah its something to tear up on and also they have a new vendetta with scar and decide to fight him but the way they plan it and also get the Homunculi involved is a genius!

Loved the volume. Great emotional moments and reunion between the brother, big foreshadowing of things to come for Winry and the villain Scar taking center stage and loving the whole big revelations coming. Also the art and shading just gets better every time.

It's down-home family time as Edward Elric returns to Resembool to a confrontation with his father and a reckoning with his failed attempt to resurrect his mother. Snooze villain Scar who has been wandering around the fringes of the storyline for several volumes comes booming back to the fore, unfortunately. Arakawa loves killing characters, and I heartily nominate Scar for the In Memoriam page in the very near future.

With over three dozen characters being shuffled through the chapters herein, I'm glad I'm bingeing this series after it has been completed, because there's no way I could have kept track of everyone if I was reading individual volumes with months between each one.

HOLY MOLEY this volume was dark! There was some stuff in this that completely took me by surprise but I loved it. This entire story is so compelling and interesting! There are characters who I didn't like all that much when they were first introduced and now I'm super attached to them. I love the direction this story s going in. As a tiny criticism I will say that some of the more fast-paced combat scenes became a little difficult to volume.. I would get the jist of it but be unable to map it out properly in my head.

This was an AMAZING volume!! I even got a little teary-eyed in certain parts when some of our characters were able to let go of past pain. It was beautiful in a really emotional and hard way.

The story continues to get deeper and deeper with questions and trying to find answers. One thing I feel that the Elric brothers don't know yet, but I feel pretty confident(?) about is that their Dad is a bad guy. Based on the previous volume, he has the same stature and facial features (of what we see) that match how his Dad looks like in this volume. Also him giving that "advice" to Granny implies he's behind something big and bad that is going to happen (at least in my opinion)!

I'm not sure why, but Scar is a really compelling villain. I find his fight scenes always really good and maybe because he is more on the hunt of justice and revenge in a religious kind of way, I find his actions fascinating. Those seem to be some of the most compelling (and scary) villains I've read.

I really feel this was the volume where are brothers matured and are putting more and more of themselves on the line. While I wouldn't say they are refusing help from those around them, they are really seeing/learning how their actions and getting others involved effects not just them, but people they are about too. Winry is noticing all this in both of them, though especially Edward and I am here for those two SUPER subtle comments of noticing Edward isn't a boy anymore. Yep, yep, yep, I am here for it!

I am still TBD with Lin. I cannot get a good read on this guy, even though I feel confident he IS a good guy? I mean if he's teaming up with our boys, then he HAS to be a good guy, right? I know I loved their plan at the end, even though when a certain character shows up I'm just wanting to yell at them to run! LOL!

Stand strong, boys!!

This was a heavy volume in between dealing with Al's condition as soul attached to a suit of armor, the Elric family drama, and a realization that gives peace to the Elric brothers' mentor. Learning more about what Al goes through was so sad. He's so young and to know he fears death so early in life is so sad.

There's set up here for what looks like a romance between Winry and Eric, which isn't that exciting for me to read. I like their friendship (and Winry's friendship with Al), but most mangas have some sort of romance in them so I guess it was just a matter of time.

Here's another intermission one, more concerning itself with exposition and emotional catharsis than straightforward plot advancement. Confronting past traumas, setting the stage for future conflicts, and Scar makes a return. I don't mind one bit: it gets pretty sad and quite dark in places, in the good way.

It's a shame we didn't get more of Gomanche. He gives a good showing of himself here.

The plot was jumping between too many places for the bigger part of the volume, and while there were some important reveals and we had a chance to see yet another state alchemist in action, it mostly felt like getting everyone in the right spot for the fight at the end.

Volume 11 of Fullmetal Alchemistby Hiromu Arakawa nearly coincides with the end of Brotherhood Part 2. Now that the Elric brothers and their friends in the military are beginning to know the truth behind the current mess in Central, they want to take action. To that, though, they need to better understand the enemy.

Ed learns the truth behind human transmutation and while it's a painful lesson, it does bring some comfort. Death is final even if you try to pay the ultimate price.

Havoc pays a price too in a fire fight. Seeing him injured shocked me more than Hughs's death. Like Hughs, he was played for comedy and ends up being a hero above an beyond expectations.

Of most interest, though, is the tidbit that might explain Ed's short stature. Like everything else, a comedic detail is woven right back into the story arc.

Something I really appreciate about this series is that Ed gets to hate his deadbeat dad and it's never condemned by the narrative, in most media for young adults the kid might be upset but then the author will have them come around and be like ohhh well, it was necessary for them to leave, I forgive them, etc etc. But Ed is allowed to be furious and the author makes it clear he's totally justified in this

I was reading this on the bus and then realised that I had to stop because the way a particular scene was going, it would definitely make me cry soon. Finished it at home - and I was right, so I'm glad I didn't keep reading on the bus. This series has such a great emotional core!

- i've grown attached to lin and his bodyguards, so i don't want anything happening to them
