Retribution was the story of Justine, Xavier’s former flame who rekindles a relationship with him. In this follow-up book, we see the perspective of Annette, Xavier’s ex-wife. Xavier cheated on her, had a secret child with Justine, and divorced her. Annette takes none of this sitting down.
Annette is vengeful, paranoid, and violent. She stalks Xavier, Justine, and their son Emile. She’s lost in the past, blaming everyone for what went wrong, meanwhile she has a hard time looking at her own faults. A counselor herself, she is forced to go to therapy after attacking Xavier. Her relationship with her daughter is in ruins, but she’s forging a relationship with another young lady, a troubled client of hers. Annette is tiptoeing the line at her job, because she’s developing feelings for her client’s father. Can this relationship help her heal?
I love this series--there’s always a lot of juicy drama. It was interesting reading Annette’s viewpoint, because she was unlikable, particularly in the first half of the book. Learning about her motivations and seeing her change softened her character compared to my initial thoughts about her in the previous book. This is a satisfying read, and I hope another book will be issued in this series.
