The Silent Girls is a book that hits the ground running. The opening sequence is a deliciously gory stabbing scene committed by a very surprising culprit. The story then unfolds into a well-paced thriller revolving around a missing distant relative of one of the local cops in a small Vermont town. Former detective turned private investigator Frank Rath has been called in to help expedite the search and rescue in hopes of finding the girl alive while simultaneously hiding the fact that the case has been given preferential treatment. Frank hung up his badge decades ago when his own sister was murdered. Now, while trying to piece the background of the missing girl’s last goings-on, Frank finds him dealing with old unhealed wounds and his team discovers the mystery may be deeper than they originally thought when they realize there are actually five girls who are missing fairly close to their area. The only thing the girls have in common? They’re all young. Then a body surfaces . . .
Literally. Surfaces from the entanglement of brush she’d been buried under in a local creek and it is discovered she was gutted and carved upon with potential satanic images. Are the missing girls connected? Is a cult to blame? Can they piece the parts together in time to find their original missing girl????
According to Goodreads, The Silent Girls is 100 pages long. Yeah, that’s not correct. I actually bumped this one to the top of my reading list thinking I’d be able to breeze right through it and get on to my next book quickly. That wasn’t the case, but I ended up being okay with it. I am still curious about the page count, though - first, because I assume it was closer to 400 pages and second, because the one complaint I have about this book is that it could have been whittled down (which cost it in the rating department). There were a lot of plotlines . . . easily enough for two related (because of main characters), but separate books (and a third once you throw in the open-ending). I like a book with some twists and turns, but this one had umpteen of ‘em all at the end. One or two would have been plenty because the writing was goooooooood. There didn’t need to be a giant dog and pony show to serve as a distraction.
There were also a lot of unnecessary factoids with respect to the characters that didn’t end up being necessary. Frank’s bad back is mentioned once every other page and another character’s addiction to running is droned on and on about. I understand the author did this intentionally for deeper meaning, but really? In this case it didn’t really work and most of it could be left on the cutting room floor. And finally, there were a lot of instances of using italics that put the emPHAsis on the wrong syLLAble. In all fairness, however, I did read an uncorrected proof, so hopefully that issue will be corrected before final printing.
Bottom line? This was one of the better thrillers I’ve read this year and I’ll definitely look for more of Eric Rickstad’s stuff in the future.

The Silent Girls by Eric Rickstad was for me one of the best crime thrillers I have read in a while he takes you into the mind of a serial killer & the incomprehensible torture of his victims.
The plot was well written & I thought a lot of research had gone into the mind of serial killers in general. this book started off with a bang & the ending was a brilliant finish to this novel.
Set in Canaan Vermont Frank Rath was a former Detective who's career was nearly over after the brutal killing of his wife Laura she was tortured by a serial killer years earlier, now a Pi he is looking after his daughter Rachel vowing to protect her with his life.
Detective Harland Grout asks him to help him investigate a case he is working on that is very similar to that of his wife young girls are going missing one in particular Mandy Wilks she just disappeared of the face of the earth only young & pregnant Grout suspects the worse case scenario, but no body has been found.
Meanwhile Rath is suffering with his own demons but pursues the case, when another young girls body is found the torture she was put through was abhorrent her child was taken this chills both Rath & grout to the core they cannot believe this madman would do this to these girls WHY & WHAT WAS HIS MOTIVE!!!
The Actions gets so much better when Rachel suddenly disappears Rath is completely broken fear takes him but he will stop at nothing to find her, what happens from here on is one big rollercoaster ride Will Rath Save Rachel or will he lose her for good.
Loved this book am now a fan of Mr Rickstad.

What a gem of a book this turned out to be!
Frank Rath is a retired detective, has a back that's acting up and misses his adoptive daughter who's gone off to college.
Alone and with too much time on his hands, he gets drawn into a missing person's case as a consultant.
But there is more to this case than meets the eye, and the disappearances of other missing girls might be linked to it.
This story offers more than the reader can expect from the blurb. It raises questions of morality and good vs. evil, while it keeps the characters human and flawed, everybody with their own problems, big or small.
The story developed well and the characters were believable, from beginning to end.
And it goes so much deeper than the main story line, giving the reader more than enough background on Rath and Rachel, his adoptive daughter, to fully understand their relationship. And there are a few plot twists that keeps everything interesting.
Overall, I would have rated it 4.5 stars. But, DAMN, I'm such a sucker for that very last, unexpected twist right at the end of a book when you think you're through the story. I LOVED this ending.
Recommended for all Crime fans!

The Silent Girls opens with a shocking and creepy prologue that made me eager to learn more. It was so crazy, intense and scary that I read it out loud to my husband so he could be creeped out as well, and he is NOT a reader whatsoever and even he was captivated. It’s Halloween in 1985 and a woman opens her door to a trick or treater expecting to have an ordinary interaction and it’s anything but. I’ll just say there is bloodshed and the hair on the back of my neck was standing up, a truly chilling opening to a really gripping book.
It flips to 2011 and you’re introduced to Frank Rath a former police officer turned private investigator living in Vermont. I’m a big fan of a PI as a lead rather than a cop as I love how they can skirt the boundaries of the law and Rath definitely toes the line. He was a really strong protagonist and was crafted extremely well, I totally felt like I had a solid sense of who he is and what motivates him by the end. The secondary characters were also well drawn, they were mostly detectives who were working alongside Rath and you can definitely tell that Rickstad is laying the groundwork for a series.
The writing style was smart and very distinct, I think I could pick up another one of the authors books with no name on the cover and still know that it was his work. It’s dark and gritty at times, a great companion to the stark setting in the lead up to a brutal Vermont winter. The plot was well constructed and kept me guessing and the subplot surrounding Rath’s personal life really piqued my interest. And that ending, talk about an explosive cliffhanger, I am SO glad that I’ll be reading the second book in this series really soon!

There better be a fucking sequel.
About a retired detective-turned P.I., Frank Rath, who gets dragged into a missing person case as a favour to a cop friend, The Silent Girls starts off with a nightmarish bang, violently grabbing your attention. As Frank follows up on clues and leads, hoping to find the missing girl alive, the more connections he makes to other missing girls in the area. Soon he's up to five, then a body conveniently surfaces in the creek. She's been carved into, tortured in a way that seems almost cult-ish. So Frank is off investigating religious extremists (always maddeningly entertaining), abortion clinics and support groups while dealing with personal issues with his daughter/niece/potential-psycho-loony-tune.
The first third and the last third are really good, but the middle drags. But it's worth reading the slow, plodding, complicated bits to get to the really good parts.
Side note: If you're a religious extremist/anti-abortionist, I'd probably steer clear of this book. The central themes are decidedly divisive and I have a feeling you'll come away from reading that with that stick even further up your ass.

I picked up Eric Rickstad’s novel, The Silent Girls, on a whim. Creepy cover. Compelling blurb. Killer opening. But. (Trust me, you’ll get it in a moment.)
So, Frank Rath is a former cop turned private investigator who lives in Canaan, Vermont. He’s a single dad to daughter, Rachel, who is away for her first semester at college. By his own admission, Rath was a womanizing asshole, until his sister and her husband were brutally murdered in their own home. Now he’s a middle aged ex-cop with a bad back and too much time on his hands.
Then local cop, Harland Grout, calls about a missing girl who happens to be the daughter of his wife’s cousin. He wants Rath’s help. Looking into the case, another cop, Sonja Test (yes, all the names are this weird) discovers that there have been several other missing girls in the area over the last few years. Rath starts poking around, as you do, allowing the reader to meet a strange (and often reprehensible) cast of minor characters complete with the requisite red herrings.
As far as mysteries go, this one is okay. Not fabulous, not horrible. I think part of the issue for me was that there was – perhaps – too much going on. The latest missing girl is one thing. All the other girls another thing. And Rath’s own troubled past also factors in and contributes to a completely implausible denouement. I don’t mean to imply that the plot is convoluted; it’s not hard to keep track of any of this. It’s just that…
I was distracted by the writing. So, instead of staying with Rath the whole time, Rickstad chose a less limited point of view. Okay – fair enough. However, he had this weird writing tick that drove me nuts.
“She sort of seems familiar. But. In that way that reminds you of someone from TV or a dream.”

“But. State borders aren’t going to stop a sicko,” Sonja said.

But. How did one person, or even two people, choose these girls. And why?

“Of course I can read.” Gale sighed. “But. Her handwriting is a first grader’s. I’ll give it my best.”

“That was when I thought you were an intruder. I’ve been known to fib, if circumstances warrant. But. He’s harmless.”
I’m sure you get my drift. It would be one thing if one character said “But.” in this manner. Unfortunately, Rickstad uses it in exposition and every piece of dialogue I’ve quoted above is a different character. Is it a Vermont thing? Drove me bonkers.
Is The Silent Girls a page-turner? After all, that’s why we read books like this, right? I was intrigued by the book’s opening – which was uber-creepy and reminiscent of the movie The Strangers. (It took me three tries to watch that thing) but I can’t say that the rest of the book lived up to its promise. I didn’t really care for any of the characters and I hated the ending. I turned the pages, sure, but I wouldn’t turn the book over to someone else.

Dark, gritty and full of depravity. I was really surprised how good this was and I can’t wait to read the next one in the series.

Το «Ούτε λέξη» είναι ένα από τα καλύτερα και πιο ατμοσφαιρικά αστυνομικά θρίλερ που έχουν κυκλοφορήσει τα τελευταία χρόνια, το οποίο παρασύρει από την πρώτη κιόλας στιγμή τον αναγνώστη στο δίχτυ που με τόση μαεστρία έχει υφάνει ο συγγραφέας του.
Η ιστορία διαδραματίζεται σε μια απομακρυσμένη ορεινή κοινότητα του Βερμόντ. Η απομόνωση της επαρχίας και το λευκό, παγωμένο τοπίο αποτελούν το ιδανικότερο σκηνικό για την πλοκή της υπόθεσης. Το συγκεκριμένο βιβλίο διαθέτει εξ’ αρχής όλα τα απαραίτητα εχέγγυα για να είναι επιτυχημένο· μια καλοστημένη ιστορία, μια καλοδουλεμένη πλοκή, πολλούς ενδιαφέροντες χαρακτήρες που, ως εντελώς διαφορετικοί μεταξύ τους, μπλέκονται σε σχέσεις φιλίας, αγάπης, ανταγωνιστικότητας και μίσους, κρατώντας συνεχώς αμείωτο το ενδιαφέρον για την πορεία και την κατάληξή τους. Οι τύψεις επειδή δεν κατάφερε να τη σώσει είναι κάτι που κουβαλά για χρόνια μετά, και ακόμα προσπαθεί να καταφέρει να τις διαχειρίζεται. Starts with a very strange and horrific murder. Frank Roth has seen his share of the horrific, the murder in the past of his sister and her husband, a murder Frank for which Frank feels a great deal of responsibility. Their daughter at the time was a young child and Frank has raised her as his own.
Now as an free lance investigator Frank fins himself embroiled in a missing persons case. One tied to a friend of his still on the force. The investigation will lead to a radical anti-abortion group.
Loved the twists and turns as the plot lines are brought together. At the end a psychopathic murderer will gain parole, a murderer with strong ties to Franks past. Good storyline and strong characters, and of course by the way the book ended it looks like their will definitely be a follow-up.

The Silent Girls opens with a super creepy murder of a pregnant woman, and I was immediately hooked. Unfortunately, that opening chapter was the best part of the book for me and the rest was just okay.
Retired-detective-turned-private-investigator Frank Rath is pulled into a missing girl case by a friend of his. As he begins to help his friend, a string of murdered women are uncovered and are seemingly being killed by the same person in the same way, however Frank can’t initially figure out their connection. As the connection is revealed, Frank learns how dark some people’s minds are.
The Silent Girls sounded really great on paper, and I was excited to read it as one of my Beat the Backlist challenge books. As previously mentioned, the initial paragraph had me totally hooked and I was so excited to read the rest of the book, and then was let down when the rest of the book was nowhere near as creepy as the first chapter.
There were quite a few characters in the book but I felt like they all sounded the same and I had a hard time keeping them all straight. Additionally, I felt like there were pieces of the book that served no purpose to the overall story and could have been cut out to shorten the overall book and leave the reader more time with the main plot. There were times where it felt like two separate stories were being told – one with Frank’s personal life and the trial of The Preacher, and one with the dead girls and his daughter missing after going undercover to help him find out what was going on. It sort of felt like two different books, which I didn’t love.
I really liked the ending of the book and enjoyed learning who the killer was and why, however the book ended on a cliffhanger, which I hated. It felt completely unnecessary to me because it would have been really easy to wrap the book up and not need a sequel. It left me with a lot of unanswered questions, and since I won’t be reading the sequel, I’ll never know!
Overall, this was not a winner for me, but wasn’t horrible either.

Попри намагання всіх причетних до створення книги максимально знищити її, трилер таки вдався і таки досить добре вдався.
🩷А вони старалися, повірте. Всі: спочатку автор, який не дуже-то вміє в фактчекінг і нормальну людську біологію, потім його редактор, який, здається, не сильно-то хотів автору допомогти. За ними за справу «Всрати все!» узявся перекладач, знаний «мисливець повалятися у ліжку», майстер кунфу гугл-транслейту, і нарешті ще один редактор (чи редакторка), який, здається, навіть у Ворд текст не закинув, аби той хоча б одруківки підкреслив чи шо.
🩷Але попри всю цю титанічну працю, спрямовану на плюндрування книги, ідея її та сюжет настільки класні й захопливі, що в певний момент, вже звикнувши до загальної такої трішки ідіотії у побудові речень чи відірваності діалогів, починаєш гризти нігті, щиро співпереживаюч�� персонажам та намагаючись розгадати загадку зниклих дівчат.
🩷Чесно скажу — я не вгадала головного злочинця і довго підозрювала геть інший персонаж, знаходячи у його поведінці купу ознак того, що це він винний. І це ще якщо не рахувати мою найдичайшу ідею стосовно того, що злочинець взагалі не він, а вона 👀
🩷Дуже добре змальовані епізоди із втягненням людини у секту, у нав’язувані чужої провини, у тому, як можна «благими намірами вистелити доріжку до пекла» і все одно бути впевненим, що все робиш правильно.
✅ Просто блискуче також висвітлена тема інституту покарання злочинців і того, наскільки далеко ця система в реальності відійшла від гуманістичних ідей справедливості, якими замислювалася.
🩷Огидна правда неприглядного житт�� маргінальних представників соціуму, їхня низька, майже тваринна мотивація дій. Батько, що намагається «продати» за 50 баксів ніч із донькою першому ліпшому чоловіку, що скидається на такого, що має зайві 50 баксів. Тупувате існування в парах алкоголю та наркотиків, бажання, які не йдуть далі первісних рефлексів одноклітинного життя – їсти, випорожнятися та спарюватися. Читати це не в новинку, але деталями загального пазлу вони стають добрими.
✅ Додатковий плюсік книга отримує за сцени взаємодії та діалоги двох старих друзів, в яких справжня щирість не прикрита встидливо показною толерантністю.
✨ Стовідсоткове #Дафа_радить і з нетерпінням чекатиму другий том, адже ця історія закінчилася таким гачком, що важко себе втримати аби не бігти за продовженням просто зараз.

I picked this up on a whim and boy am I glad I did! It's one of those books I couldn't put down (but had to when the melatonin kicked in!) :-)
The subject matter is polarizing, a missing girl, murders, and abortion, so that's a caveat I'll throw out there.
The book kept me riveted. There were times I had no idea who to suspect, I developed a relationship with the main character (bless his bad back, I know the feeling, man), and there were constant twists.
The end, the very last sentence, read at about 2am, made me sit up in bed and shake my husband awake to tell him. I kept thinking, "WOAH. Just... yeah, WOAH." I even messaged the author on Facebook to see if there would be a second book with the basic group of characters (no answer, but he's busy, writing!).
I can honestly say I was seriously spooked for a bit after reading this and that rarely, if ever, happens. The tension and suspense and the plot twists were just so well done.
Read, but maybe not at dark towards the end!

This novel starts off with one Hell of a creepy bang that had me expecting a John Connolly style thriller.
Sadly, the meat of the story loses some of the promised edginess, gearing down into a well written, but unspectacular mystery involving a missing girl in rural Vermont.
The ending proved to be surprisingly bonechilling.
Sufficient potential to get me to read more from this author.
Solid 3.5 star read.

October 3, 2019Διαβάζοντας το βιβλίο του Eric Rickstad με τίτλο «Ούτε λέξη» αναρωτιόμουν γιατί από το 2017 και μετά δεν έχει μεταφραστεί άλλο δικό του. Και αυτό γιατί είχα καιρό να διαβάσω ένα τόσο δυνατό αστυνομικό μυθιστόρημα με στοιχεία ψυχολογικού θρίλερ.
Επιλέγοντας την περιοχή του Βερμόντ στην Αμερική με τις εξαιρετικά χαμηλές θερμοκρασίες, τις όχι και τόσο ευνοϊκές συνθήκες διαβίωσης των κατοίκων αλλά και λόγω της ρυμοτομίας της συγκεκριμένης περιοχής ξεκινάς να διαβάζεις ένα βιβλίο που από το πρώτο κεφάλαιο σε κάνει να ανατριχιάσεις. Ο Φρανκ Ραθ κάποτε υπήρξε αστυνομικός με μια πολλά υποσχόμενη καριέρα. Όμως μετά την άγρια δολοφονία της αδελφής του και του άντρα της αποφάσισε να παραδώσει το σήμα του, να γίνει ιδιωτικός ντετέκτιβ, προκειμένου να μεγαλώσει την ανιψιά του ως ο μοναδικός της κηδεμόνας. Όταν η αστυνομία ανακαλύψει ένα εγκαταλελειμμένο αυτοκίνητο στον δρόμο το οποίο ανήκει σε μια έφηβη κοπέλα που έχει εξαφανιστεί θα του ζητηθεί να αναλάβει την έρευνα. Μέσα από τα στοιχεία που θα προκύψουν θα έρθουν στην επιφάνεια εξαφανίσεις και άλλων νεαρών γυναικών που διαδέχονται η μια την άλλη και είναι απόρροια φανατισμού ενός μυστικού κυκλώματος. Και ενώ ο Ραθ θα βρεθεί αντιμέτωπος με τις συνέπειες του ένοχου, βίαιου παρελθόντος που του προκάλεσε πολύ πόνο θα ανακαλύψει και πόσο σκοτεινή μπορεί να είναι η ανθρώπινη ψυχή. Γιατί στο λευκό και παγωμένο τοπίο του Βερμόντ το κακό καραδοκεί στις σκιές και κανείς τους δεν είναι ασφαλής.
Τα έργα του Rickstad χαρακτηρίζονται σκοτεινά, ανησυχητικά και σπαρακτικά και δεν μπορώ παρά να συμφωνήσω απόλυτα. Όλα αυτά τα στοιχεία είναι που μετατρέπουν το βιβλίο του Rickstad σε ένα άκρως ατμοσφαιρικό θρίλερ σε συνδυασμό με την γκροτέσκα γραφή του.
Η πλοκή μπορεί να ρέει σχετικά αργά επειδή εστιάζει ιδιαίτερα στην ψυχοσύνθεση των ηρωών του χωρίς όμως να χάνει σε τίποτα απέναντι στην ένταση, στην αγωνία αλλά και στο σασπένς που δημιουργείται όσο ξεδιπλώνεται η ιστορία που έχει πλέξει ο συγγραφέας. This book is a very slow moving, took several chapters to even get "into" the story.
This started off as a promising dark thriller/mystery. However, into the mid-way through the book, the quality began unraveling. The characters became grossly inconsistent.
The story also goes in an all-too predictable direction and an unnecessary cliffhanger ending.

Rickstad has penned a very fine mystery set in remote Vermont.
His descriptions are superb: "a sickly light bleeding out from under a doorway," "snow blew like white ash of a nuclear fallout," "skein of Canada geese."
There are memes that fit but pop up repeatedly: the inability to get cell phone service and Rath's painful back limiting him and distracting him at every turn. Rath's devotion to his daughter drives the novel, yet it is still hard to believe someone who was such a player can't even manage a date.
Spoiler: there is the usual "religion is evil" cast to the novel, although Rickstad doesn't hesitate to use stereotypes on both sides of the abortion issue.
Twists and turns happen right through to the last page. The cliffhanger left me wishing for a follow-up book.

I've been in the mood for thrillers recently. And yet they all seem to be $12-$16 on Kindle, so I've turned to my local library's Overdrive collection, which is where I stumbled across this one.
Stories where (almost) all the investigators are male and all the victims are female can be a little hit-or-miss. So I was pleasantly surprised when this one turned out to be pretty stinking good. It starts out hella creepy, and it gets creepier from there. The story kept me guessing throughout, and the setting - small town Vermont, just as winter is setting in - fitted with the creepiness of the story very nicely.
THAT ENDING THOUGH. Cliffhanger to end all cliffhangers WTF. Thankfully, there's a sequel due out in September, so I'll have to keep an eye out for that to find out what happens next. Based on the ending, it promises to be equally creeptastic.

Нехай буде 5, але це не лайтовий трилер. Тут стільки неприємного, моторошного, бридкого. Автор навіть запахи словами зумів передати так, ніби ти їх насправді відчуваєш. Важка тема, розкривається вже аж посередині, тому не напишу яка, щоб не спойлерити. Неприємного багато, але цікаво.

Generally interesting tale from Rickstad where the best parts are the beginning and end. A mystery about missing girls starts off strong but devolves into a pretty run of the mill police procedural until the last thirty pages, when it picks up strongly and finishes with a jolt you don't see coming. Pro lifers and religion take a heavy beating here. There's also an odd use of one-word sentences throughout the story, like "But.", "And.", which are distracting. Overall, a worthwhile read, just not as good as the beginning promises. The ending more than hints at a sequel, it demands one.

This book is so bad that I don't even know where to begin. One star that I put up for it stands only for the very beginning of this book. Because yes, the beginning IS good and even very much intriguing. But it's a trap because the book is not worth one minute of your time.
The writing is very bad. If it were a paper due in literature class, Mr Rickstad would not pass that class. He makes the most basic and unforgivable mistakes that are taught to be avoided in any literature class. How it could get passed the editors is beyond my comprehension.
Mr Rickstad tried to create a dark, ominous atmosphere. A kind of a hopeless world. A mixture between the series True Detective and Scandinavian roman noir. Unfortunately, Mr Rickstad does not understand that one cannot create such an atmosphere by simply insulting people. Because this is what he does through his whole book. He sounds as a bitter, lonely, angry old man. All the women in his book are either too fat, or too thin, or too beautiful, or too stupid, or too smart. If you are a woman, there is no way to please Mr Rickstad. You lose either way. All men in Mr Rickstad's world are either pigs or "real men". Yes, in that very sense of the word. People are all bad. They are all petty, they lie, they hate, they scheme. Those who believe in God are stupid, hateful and limited to the point of being retarded. Those who do not believe in God are bitter and hopeless. This is not how one achieves a dark ominous atmosphere of a psychological thriller. Mr Rickstad should read more. Maybe Scandinavian authors. That might help him to understand that hating on the world, insulting people and sprinkling the narrative with "deep" sentences like "Death lurked everywhere. Death was alive and well" will not create the mood of a dark psychological thriller. It will only show the writer as a very bitter man who thinks himself superior to everyone else and suffer daily from having to live among stupid and limited people. And who does not know how to write. For Mr Rickstad's characters are all unpleasant, bland and simply not real. No one you might like or hate. You just don't care at best. Most of the time they annoy you because their actions are senseless, the description of their feelings are made of horrible cliche allegories and the dialogs are simply not human. No one talks like this. But most importantly, they all talk in the same way. There is no distinction of speech between people who are supposed to be very different. And behind every character lurks Mr Rickstad himself and his opinions.
His hatred for women is particular. "Like a girl" is an insult. A woman can achieve a lot of things if she is beautiful, but her life is ruined if she is not. A woman is always either too fat or too thin. Too smart or too stupid. When she works hard on a goal, she is obssessed. When she chooses a quiet life, she is a lazy looser. He gives them independence but at the same time his narrative proves that a woman doesn't have a clear idea of what to do with that independence. When his female characters speak, they say things no woman would ever say. I am sorry to learn that Mr Rickstad is actually married. I hope he doesn't have any daughters.
But what about the plot? This book had a certain potential. That's why the beginning seems interesting enough to keep reading. But even there Mr Rickstad seems to have difficulties to tie up everything he unleashed upon his pages. The book ends with an absolutely useless cliffhanger that is part of an absolutely useless plot line that is added to the book for no reason. What the author thought of as plot twists are in reality cheap lures to make the reader wonder for nothing, misleading instead of giving clues to actually try to understand what happened. Mr Rickstad might want to read some of Agatha Christie's crime novels to understand what exactly is a clue and a plot twist.

Гарний, добротний детектив, який починається як справжнісінький трилер, але більше тут все ж таки саме детективу. Розслідування зниклої дівчини, у ході якого на поверхню виринає давня справа про зникнення інших 4-х дівчат, тіло однієї з яких знаходить поліція. Вистачає психологізму, атмосферності , поступово наростаючої напруги... Хоча подекуди мені здавалося, що можна було б закінчити історію й раніше. Насамкінець все закрутилося і читати було цікавіше... Найбільш колоритним персонажем для мене виявився саме приватний детектив Френк Рат, що дуже ретельно докапувався до правди, допомагав поліції і переживав за свою племінницю, яку виховував як доньку.
Можливо, оцінила б книгу і на 5-ку, якби не кінцівка...🤔

“It was a loathsome fact about the human condition: Wherever there were girls, some would go missing, plucked like errant threads from the fabric of everyday life and cast into a lurid nightmare of someone else's making.” What a horrifyingly true statement that is! I enjoyed this enough to pass along to friends but I won’t be shouting about it from the rafters.

The creepy start to this book unfortunately hooked me, but ultimately didn't deliver.
It was an okay story, with some themes that may anger a lot of people, involving abortion and the like, so I don't recommend it if you're sensitive to those things. I wasn't expecting it at all from the blurb.
Also taking off a star for the reference to a "runner's ass".

Διαβάζοντας πριν από μερικούς μήνες, με αφορμή μια συζήτηση στο Goodreads, την περίληψη του "Ούτε λέξη", μου είχε κεντρίσει το ενδιαφέρον έτσι ώστε να μπει στη "wanna read" λίστα μου, πράγμα το οποίο ανέβαλα όταν ενημερώθηκα από τις εκδόσεις Μεταίχμιο πως απέκτησαν τα δικαιώματα και πως το βιβλίο θα κυκλοφορούσε στα ελληνικά. Και πράγματι, ο βασιλιάς των αστυνομικών, έφερε ένα ακόμα αξιόλογο και άκρως ενδιαφέρον βιβλίο στις προθήκες των βιβλιοπωλείων -με ένα υπέροχο κι εντυπωσιακό εξώφυλλο που σε κάνει ν' ανατριχιάζεις- και από εκεί στα χέρια μας. Ατμοσφαιρικό, με έναν έντονο, αν και κάπως διεστραμμένο, ερεθισμό των αισθήσεών μας, το "Ούτε λέξη" είναι το δίχως άλλο ένα από τα καλύτερα θρίλερ που έχω διαβάσει έως τώρα για το 2017, και κάτι μου λέει πως θα παραμείνει ψηλά στη λίστα των προτιμήσεών μου μέχρι αυτή να φύγει.
Ο Φρανκ Ραθ, πρώην αστυνομικός που έχει εγκαταλείψει από καιρό την ενεργή δράση για να γίνει ιδιωτικός ντετέκτιβ και ν' αφοσιωθεί στο μεγάλωμα της ανιψιάς του, οι γονείς της οποία δολοφονήθηκε άγρια και βίαια όταν εκείνη ήταν μωρό. Όταν, όμως, ένα εγκαταλελειμμένο αυτοκίνητο βρεθεί στην άκρη του δρόμου, με την έφηβη οδηγό του να έχει εξαφανιστεί και την έρευνα γύρω από την υπόθεση να οδηγεί στην εξαφάνιση και άλλων κοριτσιών που δεν άφησαν κανένα ίχνος πίσω τους, θα του ζητηθεί η βοήθειά του που κρίνεται όχι απλά σημαντική, αλλά απαραίτητη. Με τα φαντάσματα του παρελθόντος του να έχουν επιστρέψει πιο απειλητικά από ποτέ, ο Φρανκ θα βρεθεί αντιμέτωπος με τους χειρότερους φόβους του, την βαθιά εσωτερική του ανάγκη να προστατέψει την ανιψιά του, που είναι ο μοναδικός λόγος που κρατιέται στη ζωή, αλλά και σε μια βαθύτερη ενδοσκόπηση της ανθρώπινης ύπαρξης και ψυχής, με των λεπτών ορίων που χωρίζουν την λογική με την παράνοια, την εμμονή με την ψύχωση.
Θα ήθελα να ξεκινήσω από τον Φρανκ που είναι ένας ιδιαίτερα ενδιαφέρων χαρακτήρας και αυτό γιατί δεν παρουσιάζεται μέσα από μία κλισέ και κοινότυπη οπτική, όπως πολύ συχνά συνηθίζονται οι διάφοροι υπερασπιστές του Νόμου σε μυθιστορήματα αυτού του είδους. Είναι ένας αρκετά συνηθισμένος χαρακτήρας, με μια ισχυρή προσωπικότητα που όμως την ίδια στιγμή παραμένει πολύ ανθρώπινος και προσιτός, πράγμα που μας επιτρέπει να ταυτιστούμε μαζί του, ενώ το σκοτεινό παρελθόν του, η αποτρόπαια δολοφονία της αδερφής του, που άλλαξε τη ζωή του για πάντα, έχουν συμβάλει στη διαμόρφωση του χαρακτήρα του, ενώ παράλληλα μας προκαλούν και μια προσωπική συγκίνηση απέναντι στο δράμα του που μοιάζει να μην τελειώνει ποτέ. Σαφέστατα και έχει και τις σκοτεινές του πτυχές, όμως ακόμα κι αυτές τοποθετούνται μέσα σε ένα καθολικά γήινο πλαίσιο, δεν είναι υπερβολικές ή εξωπραγματικές, οπότε σε κανένα επίπεδο δεν χάνουμε την ταύτιση ή την σύνδεση μαζί του.
Όμως και οι υπόλοιποι χαρακτήρες του βιβλίου παρουσιάζουν μεγάλο ενδιαφέρον. Ο Rickstad έχει δουλέψει πολύ καλά με τα ψυχογραφήματά τους, κι αν και είναι εκ δια μέτρου αντίθετοι μεταξύ τους, αλληλοσυμπληρώνονται και την ίδια στιγμή, ο καθένας από αυτούς, έχει κάτι το ξεχωριστό και το ιδιαίτερο να προσφέρει, τόσο στη δομή της ιστορίας όσο και στις εξελίξεις αυτής. Το πιο ενδιαφέρον προφίλ όλων, τόσο ως προς την παρακολούθηση της ανάπτυξής του ως και ως προς την ανάλυσή του, είναι αναμφίβολα αυτό του δράστη. Μπορεί η πραγματική του ταυτότητα να μας αποκαλύπτεται στο τέλος, αν κι ένας αρκετά έμπειρος αναγνώστης του αστυνομικού μυθιστορήματος είναι σε θέση να κάνει αρκετές σωστές εικασίες μέχρι να φτάσει στο σημείο αυτό, όμως, καθ' όλη την διάρκεια των εξελίξεων, μας προσφέρονται σε δόσεις τόσες πληροφορίες όσες χρειαζόμαστε προκειμένου να σκιαγραφήσουμε το προφίλ του, να εμβαθύνουμε στην προσωπικότητά του, αλλά και να εμβαθύνουμε στην συνειδησιακή του λογική, αν μπορώ να το θέσω έτσι, καταλαβαίνοντας καλύτερα τα κίνητρά του ακόμα κι αν δεν τ' ασπαζόμαστε.
Η πλοκή είναι από της πλέον καλοδουλεμένες και άρτιες που έχω συναντήσει το τελευταίο διάστημα, με τον Rickstad να μπαίνει πολύ ψηλά στη λίστα των πιο ευφυών μυθιστοριογράφων αστυνομικής λογοτεχνίας των τελευταίων χρόνων. Όλα είναι μελετημένα και τοποθετημένα εκεί ακριβώς όπου πρέπει, έτσι ώστε σταδιακά να συνδεθεί ένα παζλ ενδείξεων, αποδείξεων και αποκαλύψεων που οδηγούν βήμα βήμα στην αποκάλυψη της πραγματικής αλήθειας. Μα αυτό που είναι ακόμα πιο εντυπωσιακό, είναι το πως ο συγγραφέας καταφέρνει την ίδια στιγμή να παίζει με το υποσυνείδητο και τα συναισθήματά μας, διατηρώντας μια ισορροπία αξιοζήλευτη. Το "Ούτε λέξη" είναι μια φρικιαστική και, συνάμα, μια βαθιά συναισθηματική ιστορία, ιδιαίτερα ανθρωποκεντρική, και αυτό είναι που τελικά την καθιστά τόσο ενδιαφέρουσα στα μάτια μας. Με φόντο το υπέροχο και μοναδικά τρομακτικό χιονισμένο φόντο του Βερμόντ, ο Rickstad μάς προσφέρει απλόχερα μία ιστορία που κερδίζει τις εντυπώσεις, αφήνοντάς μας σαφείς υπαινιγμούς πως, στο κοντινό μέλλον, ο Φρανκ θα επιστρέψει. Κι αν θέλετε τη γνώμη μου, ανυπομονώ γι' αυτό.

The Silent Girls by Eric Rickstad is a 2014 Witness Impulse publication. I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher and Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.
This is a slow paced thriller with several suspenseful threads and a whale of an ending that left me with my mouth hanging open.
Frank Rath's days as playboy cop came to a sudden halt seventeen years ago, when his sister and her husband were murdered, leaving their small daughter, Rachel, an orphan. The killer, a man dubbed “Preacher” is now up for parole. Frank became Rachel's father, and began work in the private sector as a detective. Now, Rachel is away at college and Frank is still fighting off his demons as it becomes clear that this is going to be a very cold and dark Vermont Winter.
When a young girl vanishes, Frank is called in to assist in the investigation. When a body is found, the evidence begins to tie in a string of missing persons cases, all of them young women. It takes a while for Frank to connect the dots as to what these women have in common, but when he does, he wants his daughter's help with the case. The problem is he can't seem to find her or make contact with her, leaving him to fear the worst.
Frank is a complex , no nonsense, no fun and games type of guy. He is a great detective, but his demons plague him almost non-stop. Rachel is the focus of his life and keeping her safe has led him to keep her parent's true cause of death a secret from her. But, now it looks as though circumstances beyond his control, will finally reveal the sad truth.
Meanwhile , Frank is set to speak at the “Preacher's” parole hearing, and he is dealing with some health issues all while working the missing girls case. Frank's investigation will him to a possible cult and to an unorthodox adoption clinic whose organization is adamantly opposed to abortion. Could this be what the girls had in common? Are all these cases related? Will the “Preacher” win his parole hearing? And where on earth is Rachel?
I really enjoyed the character study of Frank. I'm really curious to see how he will handle the stunning revelations that were tossed out at him in this book. The mystery itself was interesting, but for some reason, the outcome was anti-climatic after such a slow build up. So, this part of the story was just wee bit of a disappointment. However, the issues Frank faces in this book and will face in the future made up for any lukewarm areas of the book. I think choosing such a hot button issue as abortion to build a story around was a little risky, since the author had to make sure he kept a neutral stance with his main character. The idea of infiltrators is most likely a reality making the story more than plausible.
The story is a bit understated at times, and there are some interesting secondary characters, one of which I was happy to see the back of.
Overall this is a pretty solid mystery thriller, a little on the dark side, and it would serve well as a psychological thriller too if you like reading those types of stories. 3.5 stars rounded to 4.

Δεν ήξερα τίποτα για το ωραίο και εθιστικό αυτό θρίλερ, μέχρι που πριν κάτι μήνες είδα ότι θα κυκλοφορούσε στα ελληνικά, από τις εκδόσεις Μεταίχμιο. Αμέσως το έψαξα στο ίντερνετ, διάβασα την περίληψη, καθώς και κριτικές, και το έβαλα στην λίστα με τα υπό αγορά βιβλία. Με το που έσκασε μύτη στα βιβλιοπωλεία, το τσίμπησα και δεν άργησα και πολύ να το πιάσω στα χέρια μου. Λοιπόν, χθες το ξεκίνησα και πριν από λίγη ώρα το τελείωσα. Και δεν είναι μικρό βιβλίο, μιλάμε για τετρακόσιες πενήντα σελίδες. Αυτό δείχνει πόσο πολύ με συνεπήρε, πόσο ενδιαφέρον, ευκολοδιάβαστο και εθιστικό είναι σαν θρίλερ.
Η όλη ιστορία διαδραματίζεται στο Βερμόντ και κύριος πρωταγωνιστής είναι ένας πρώην αστυνομικός και νυν ιδιωτικός ντετέκτιβ, ο Φρανκ Ραθ, εργένης που μεγαλώνει την κόρη της αδερφής του, η οποία δολοφονήθηκε πολλά χρόνια πριν. Μια μέρα σαν τις άλλες, βρίσκεται ένα εγκαταλελειμμένο αυτοκίνητο στην μέση ενός επαρχιακού δρόμου, το οποίο ανήκει σε μια πανέμορφη έφηβη κοπέλα, η οποία και εξαφανίστηκε μυστηριωδώς. Η ολιγομελής αστυνομική δύναμη της περιοχής θα ζητήσει την βοήθεια του Ραθ. Η όλη ιστορία, όμως, θα εξελιχθεί σε μια έρευνα και άλλων εξαφανισμένων κοριτσιών, καθώς και μιας δολοφονίας σε διπλανή πολιτεία. Κάποιος κυκλοφορεί εκεί έξω και απάγει/σκοτώνει κοπέλες...
Έχουμε να κάνουμε με ένα τίμιο και αξιόλογο θρίλερ, με τις κατάλληλες δόσεις μυστηρίου, αγωνίας, δράσης και αποκαλύψεων. Η γραφή είναι πολύ καλή, άκρως ευκολοδιάβαστη, ξεκούραστη και εθιστική, με ωραίες περιγραφές των τοπίων και των διαφόρων σκηνικών. Η ατμόσφαιρα εξαιρετική. Φυσικά υπάρχουν και τα αναμενόμενα κλισέ και ίσως κάποιες υπερβολές και ευκολίες κατά την εξέλιξη της πλοκής, όμως πάνω-κάτω αυτό συμβαίνει με όλα τα θρίλερ εκεί έξω. Γενικά είναι ένα πολύ καλό βιβλίο, που πιστεύω ότι θα ικανοποιήσει τους λάτρεις του είδους. Προσωπικά δηλώνω ευχαριστημένος και με μεγάλη μου χαρά θα διάβαζα και άλλα βιβλία του συγγραφέα.

Any book which name checks both Poe and Edward Gorey’s The Gashlycrumb Tinies has to be an instant winner for the Raven, and this Vermont set thriller from Rickstad neatly does both in addition to simply being a great read. I found this a slick, well- plotted and engrossing thriller from the outset, bolstered by the assured characterisation of the central protagonist, private investigator, Frank Rath, and his police associates, particularly the wonderfully feisty Sonja Test. Rath was a great character, inevitably haunted by a dark episode in his past, leading to the adoption of his sister’s child to raise as his own, but who enshrines both a moral decency and tenacious doggedness tempered by moments of self-questioning and doubt particularly in the realm of human connection. His reactions and interactions as the case develops is central to the reader’s engagement with the story, and the seriousness of the case as it unfolds is tempered throughout by moments of dry humour and high emotion. Equally, Sonja is a terrific female protagonist, and her natural intelligence and ability to think outside the box, leads to the development of some clever turns in the investigation, providing a contrary stance to her own self-questioning of her personal life and responsibilities.
The plotting is tight throughout, throwing up enough twists and turns so that the resolution is neatly concealed right up to the book’s closing chapters, and, desperately avoiding plot spoilers, provokes some interesting questions on an always contentious issue. A good read and recommended for that summer getaway.
The plotting is tight throughout, throwing up enough twists and turns so that the resolution is neatly concealed right up to the book’s closing chapters, and, desperately avoiding plot spoilers, provokes some interesting questions on an always contentious issue. A good read and recommended for that summer getaway.

DNF - couldn’t get into it

As I read this book, I updated all along whilst reading, each time I made progress, so I really was NOT going to write ANY kind of review, and simply give a rating. BUT- THAT ENDING. That ending COMPELLED me to write something.
This novel was great. For the most part, it was freaking fantastic. It was well constructed, with great characterization, tone and was full of emotion. I was really enjoying it- MUCH more than I usually enjoy mysteries...Then? THAT ENDING.
What a cheap, flimsy cliffhanger. A 'just so that you HAVE to buy the 2nd book'- type of ending. I HATE that. (2nd book is not even released yet, btw!)
I THOUGHT that I read somewhere that this book eventually became part of a series as the author continues his career, but I thought (hoped) that maybe it was the type of series where the same main character of (Private Detective) Frank Rath goes on to solve totally different, unrelated crimes in a series of stand alone stories. NO. NOT AT ALL. No such luck.
As soon as THIS story reached its satisfying, well written conclusion-- BAM -- a disheartening, groan worthy, tacked-on ending that basically (needlessly) continues the story and forces you to buy the next book to see what happens with Rath and co. (And again, it is not even released yet).
Well, I am not going to be getting the next book out of pure spite! I HATE when authors do this type of cheap cliffhanger shit. In fact, I knocked my rating down to 3 stars because of this very fact. Dammit, Eric Rickstad, I thought I had found a new favorite author, perhaps....instead I found yet another writer peddling a damn SERIES of books. Doesn't ANYONE write actual stand-alone novels anymore??? I HATE getting involved in an entire series of novels needlessly. UGH....
Aside from THAT massive, sudden disappointment, this WAS a well-crafted mystery/psychological thriller that took many twists and turns and wound up 'going deep' with its themes of family, responsibility, love/relationships and especially the dangers of religion, which I really enjoyed. In fact, I enjoyed this whole book the entire time I was reading it...up until those last 10 pages. *shakes head in disgust* --Jen from Quebec :0)
