It's a bit complicated. On the surface, "Overlord" seems as simple as a straight-up wish fulfillment fantasy and children pulling the wings off flies. But that's the point.

"Overlord" is the story of a nihilist anti-hero that has lost the majority of his humanity to the simulated world designed for wish-fulfillment (or a coma or a hell or other, but that's another discussion). Ainz is an unchallenged super-being with godlike powers, who could, as all his followers in Nazarick do, view "humans" of

Overlord was an... odd read.

I didn't dislike it, but there were times I forgot I was reading it.

The use of color inside the book was marvelous, but the plot was a bit peculiar.

Seems like this book sets up the premise for the series (view spoiler), but not much happens in it.

I'm just not sure what I feel.

There were things I liked, things I disliked, and things I didn't understand but am curious or meh about.

I feel like I don't really know

Overlord is a “trapped in a game” story, similar to Tron or Log Horizon. The rules here are a little different from some other “stuck in virtual reality” stories. It is just one guy (username Momonga) who is trapped instead of the usual group of people. Despite not having other players trapped with his, the NPCs controlled by his guild have all come to life. They are now real people, but their personalities stay just like

This was an interesting read for me. My son decided I should branch out and read a book that has a video game premise as its subject. The idea behind it is interesting, we go with Momonga as he tries to figure out just what happened the final moment his game was supposed to shut down. The characters are interesting, but it does seem a little one dimensional. The art profiles at the back of the book are really neat, and so is the cover art for each chapter. If you ever wanted a peek into what a c ...more

Potentially the most autistic thing I have ever read, Overlord follows the exploits of a Japanese salaryman who finds himself a) sucked into the virtual-reality MMORPG Yggdrasil while simultaneously b) his guild's base from the game gets shifted to an apparently "real" parallel fantasy world wherein all the magic, races, and classes work similarly to the game's mechanics.

Through the limited third-person narration, the audience follows Satoru Suzuki's attempts to understand this new fantasy world

Overlord finds itself as the latest entry in the growing field of trapped in a game world series. YenON publishes other series of this type (Log Horizon, Sword Art Online, No Game No Life), so fans of their books will easily find themselves at home here. What sets this one apart is that instead of having a lead who provides all the solutions to ever problem with his epic skills as the fated human, we have a big bad raid dungeon boss of an undead variety who has no other allies except the ones he ...more

This book...is adorable. Really, It's the best word I can come up that summarizes my entire feelings on it. And really, I say this in the books favor as I should not by all accounts (As one who has wrote his entire life and studied the craft) like this book. I do however, and I can really only attribute that to my love for anime and stories that features villains as the protagonists. Otherwise, it's absolutely juvenile prose and banality would have forced me to stop reading at the third page. It ...more

My son had read this book and gave it to me to read. He told me about how it had been an online novel which had such a fan base that people supported the author to get it published. Let me first off say that my son is an avid gamer and I am not. However, I have played Dungeons and Dragons so I did understand some of the lingo in the book. The advantages of this book is that it draws on the concept of a world developing as we speak and how the main character deals with the unexpected. This allows ...more

Lot of information that would probably have been lost if I started watching the show before reading. It's interesting that the main character is a skeleton, and also has no real goal of getting back home. The world and mechanics of Yggdrasil feels like an old school RPG or Dungeons and Dragons. The characters are ok, my favorites are Momonga and Albedo. I hope a lot of the other characters get developed in the next volume of this series. I won't follow releases at an intense level, but when my o ...more

After having watched the first season of the anime and thoroughly enjoying it, a friend of mine got me this for last years birthday. Now, after having also watched the second season of the anime, I thought: Why not start with the light novels?

And so I did.
Story-wise, and because of the whole idea and characters and everything, I would give it a good five stars. But because sometimes the style is a bit lacking (though very contemporary, which does support the main idea of the story), it gets four

Disclaimer: I watched the anime before reading the light novel. So, I already liked and understood the world coming into it. My review is likely less useful to those who are coming into the books cold.

Fun premise. I love the trapped in an alternate world trope.

This offers a fair bit more information than the anime does (like scenes of the NPCs interacting after our main leaves the room). Although this book only covers the first little bit of the anime.

This story is told from a couple differen

Very Enjoyable Light Novel

I decided to read the book after watching the first season of the anime. There aren’t that big differences between the two with the exception that the novel gives more insight about the protagonist internal thoughts ,and thus as a darker tone.

The story set-up is not unique; a human who is addicted to an MMO rpg gets transferred to a fantasy world. The unique part is that he becomes an skeleton overload from the game he used to play. This book mainly serve as an introduc

This is yet another light novel of the isekai type where a normal business man plays an MMORPG that is shutting down and when it's supposed to be shut down he stays in the world as his undead overlord character.

This is different than the usual novels as the guy's race means his alignment is evil, but he still tries to do the best things for the sake of his old guild mates.

Not as much happens in the book, but it's a good start, as it's mainly the main character finding out more about the world an

Overlord is one of the best books that I've ever read. It was so descriptive and made it easy for me to imagine what's happening in the book. What made the book even better was that I had watched the Anime that was made from this book. Because I had prior knowledge of this, I knew the pronunciation of names and places in the book.
Overlord made me want to be in the mystical world of Yggdrasil, and see all the wonders of it.
Another thing that I liked about this book was the vast variety of spells

Essentially, this is a great book for readers who are also gamers. Or for readers who want video game terminology to unfold before them and be explained. The writing itself is beautiful and demonstrates the artistry capable of being contained in light novels.

In addition, I liked how it blended “magic” sci-fi with “high technology” sci-fi effortlessly. Many times this is a difficult task to conquer for writers.

The illustrations are beautiful and whimsical as well. I recommend a printed copy of

"En résumé, un premier tome qui m'a totalement convaincue de continuer cette série si atypique. On y suit Momonga, un personnage assez particulier, et intéressant à développer. L'univers où il débarque est tout autant intéressant, et l'action et la psychologie sont les points d'encrage de ce premier tome ! Pour ma part, je suis déjà pressée que la suite sorte, pour retrouver tous ces personnages si atypiques et vrais à la fois."

I read a bad fan translation of this. I want to give it 2 stars based on my experience reading it, but that wouldn’t be fair to the official english release.

Really fun first half, where an MMO player has to get used to his game suddenly becoming reality, and figuring out how everything works. It feels like the author has had a lot of experience with DnD and videogames, because the details of the fantasy World and game mechanics are very detailed and fleshes out.

4.75. I gotta say this book took me by surprise. I have never read a light novel before and this one seen like a fun one to start and I was right. But I do have to say this. If you want a serious book like The Game of Thrones then you should pick something else, but if you want a fun light hearted fantasy that it’s hilarious also with game references then this is your book! (If you read manga but want something more. I highly recommend this!)

I gave this book 4 stars but it leans more towards the 3. As far as plot goes, this book is setting up the world and main character, and thus I've given it the benefit of the doubt.
Whilst it starts similar to other litRpg novels, it has its own unique twist as well. Well worth the read if you're into the genre.

It was the fantasy. The author nicely setting put the plot. sometimes would just get lost into the book. In some cases the author over described some events and some characters which is nice giving us more to really imagine the scenario but kinda irritate you, makes you want to skip the description of that particular event or character. Overall nicely done.

I'm glad that the anime seems to follow the light novel to its minute detail pretty well so far, although I feel like some scenes were so fast paced in the anime that I found it nice to read over it again and understand the situation better.
