With its gorgeous cover and intriguing synopsis, I was really excited to start reading The Chateau. I loved Karen’s debut novel The Vineyard and was pleased to see that The Chateau was just as impressive. What looked like simply a romantic setting for a novel turned out to be so much more than that and this was a multi-layered novel which was so riveting and a real joy to read. In it we meet Gina, who on her visit to Lake Geneva for her

I would like to say thank you to Carina UK for approving me to read this on NetGalley in exchange for a fair and honest review.  Also when asked by Tay would I take part in the blog tour I jumped at the chance to move this book up my TBR pile.

When we first meet Gina she is arguing with her long term partner Max it's the same argument over his commitment issues.  Especially as they are attending Gina's brothers wedding.

Gina bumps into the loud brash Ollie, but Ollie isn't really loud and brash it

When Gina sees a ghostly apparition at her brothers wedding she is disturbed. She keeps seeing the woman and wonders why she has been chosen. She meets Ollie at the wedding but he comes across as very full of himself and she wants to keep a wide berth. Fate throws them together as he is selling some luxury homes by the lake and she's a property dealer. She agrees to help advertise them back in London and they meet up when showing the properties. She is very attracted to him- but the ghostly figu ...more

Firstly, let's talk about that cover. Yes, it's beautiful, yes, it's so-totally-swoon-worthy, and yes, it caught my attention immediately. But, and this isn't a bad but, there is so much more to The Chateau than romance and an exquisite setting. I had images in my mind of a romance story that would take my breath away, and even though the romance within did that exactly, there was just so, so, so much more to it than that.

I was given an ecopy of this book by Karen's publisher Carina UK in exchange for an honest review which I'm more than happy to give. I had previously read Karen's debut novel The Vineyard and loved everything about it from the cover, to the characters, plot and location - it truly was an indulgent read that merged reality with escapism in equal measures. I loved it that much I couldn't wait to read Karen's next offering.

The Chateau is Karen's second book, another beautiful cover, so inviting it

I kindly received The Château in exchange of an honest review by the author via NetGalley.

Since starting up her new business about the property market in London Gina Remy hadn’t much of a chance to see her Family lately. Therefor she is more than happy to attend her brother's wedding at Lake Geneva. Ginas's parents came out to Switzerland while she was at Univerity. When the figure of a woman appears hovering above the water, Gina's world

Another beauty by Karen Aldous!!! I loved Karen’s debut novel The Vineyard and couldn’t wait to start this!

The story follows Gina. We meet her on the way to her brother’s wedding at Lake Geneva in Switzerland. It’s a beautiful place and I felt strongly connected to it, not only because it’s Switzerland, but I really love it there and it’s great to read a book and know where they are. Gina’s relationship with her boyfri

This novel is a great combination of romance, mystery and the paranormal. Gina attends her brother’s wedding at Lake Geneva and encounters two things: and obnoxious but engaging Ollie and a frightening vision of a woman who seems to be asking Gina for help. Gina finds herself drawn to Ollie while trying to figure out what is going on with the vision. In addition, to the vision, which reappears periodically, Gina begins to have strange but beguiling nightmares of this woman in a dungeon setting t ...more

Karen Aldous has a unique ability to transport you to whichever exotic location she's writing about. Her prose is so vivid and descriptive you end up feeling as though you're strolling along the waters edge with the characters, looking at the Chateau in the distance wondering what secrets will unfurl as the story continues. This story has a few different layers to it, and for me that made it even more enjoyable. There's a mystery surrounding the old chateau, and Gina the main character, has a lo ...more
A great combination of relationships breaking down whilst others are developing, together with all the emotional turmoil that ensue from this are dramatically and empathetically portrayed in this brilliant novel which spans the centuries as Gina tries to discover why she keeps having nightmares and seeing a ghost! Her journey of discovery involves many upsetting discoveries concerning several people she loves and trusted. She finds that everything in life isn’t always straightforward and imperfe ...more

Beautiful romance between Ollie and Gina, no matter how much both of them try and fight the chemistry.

The setting of the book is mainly in and around a Lake in Switzerland, that on one side has a Chateau, that is key to certain points of the story, and on the other a set of lake-view apartments that Ollie developed, and Gina is trying to find buyers for.

The main draw of the book for me though, was the spirit that makes itself known to Gina, mainly through incredibly vivid dreams/nightmares, and

Wow, I feel like I've just ended a great European vacation. I loved this book. I felt like I was there enjoying all of the beautiful landscapes of Switzerland, Italy, and England, along with the characters.

There were several moments during this read, where I was irritated at some of the characters, which on one hand is wonderful as the author made me feel something and then on the other hand I wanted to be able to reach into the book and bop them on the head! Ha! But wow, the twists in this book

After reading Karen’s first book set in the South of France, I was eagerly awaiting this one. It didn’t disappoint! Set on the banks of Lake Leman in Switzerland, the backdrop to the story is pure escapism at its best. This book has darker undertones, however, as Gina is haunted by the spirit of an Italian ghost. Switching between England, Italy and Switzerland, (on occasion perhaps just a little too often in my opinion) Gina has to find out what the ghost of the lake wants her to do. She knows ...more

This was such a fun book to read. It had everything I was looking for - a great story filled with ghosts, a beautiful setting and some romance. I enjoyed the characters, particularly Gina, grow into a wiser young woman. The only issue I have with the book is that I didn't feel the fear that was described when Gina first met the ghost. While the author provided a great description, I just didn't feel like Gina felt how I would feel in the same situation. Like I said, just a small criticism...

The Chateau was such an unusual kind of story. It had romance, family drama, betrayals, suspense, and a little bit of the fantastical weaved into it. I enjoyed reading it, but I cannot say that I absolutely loved it. In actuality, this book started in ebbs and flows, in my opinion. I had to encourage myself to keep reading it. Once the pace evened out, however, I was thoroughly intrigued with what the outcome would be.

After yet another big fight with her boyfriend and the trip to Switzerland, Gina is mentally exhausted and tired at her brother's rehearsal reception. This must be the reason why she sees a ghostly apparition (or is the gin tonic to blame), right?
Ghost stories are usually not my thing, but this story is really well done, the story is multifaceted and keeps you guessing for a long time. A recommended read for sure.
