Collision. It is define as an instance of one moving object or person striking violently against another. So what happens when two worlds collide? Two hearts? Two strangers colliding on one path? Is it fate or just random circumstance? When we collide are we ready for the impact and the consequences that comes along with it?

If you are familiar with Evie Harper and her previous books, you would know that Evie is indeed a storyteller. She grips her reader's attention with her detailed and beautiful prose. She allows her readers to be fully invested with her characters whether it be heartbreaking, raw, or emotional. So in Collision, Evie Harper once again takes her readers for a full on ride of emotions, sexiness, and second chances. So sit back as she takes you on hell of a ride that is filled with grit, steam, loss, and emotions. Be prepared as our world will collide with The Portland Street Kings.

Slater is the leader of The Portland Street Kings. He is the oldest of his foster siblings. After escaping with his siblings from a monster of a foster parent, Slater and his siblings knew what it was like living on the streets and surviving. His siblings are his family and he will go at all cost to protect them and his turf. What Slater didn't expect was when a woman to get under his skin and affect him in such a way that reminded of someone in his past.

When Piper first met Slater, she knew there was an attraction that couldn't be denied. Sex with Slater ignited a burning desire in Piper. The pure carnal raw desire and chemistry between Piper and Slater was undeniable but when she learns that Slater belonged to a gang, she knew that she must stay away from him. But when their worlds were constantly colliding, will Piper be ready for the impact of falling in love with the ultimate bad boy?

Collision was an unforgettable ride of two worlds and two strangers colliding. Ms. Harper was able to capture the raw emotions of Slater and Piper as they navigate through the chaos of the worlds surrounding them. Collision was well written and an entertaining read. This book was full of sexiness and steamy moments but at the same time Ms. Harper didn't lose focus on the book which was exploring why Slater and Piper's world were constantly colliding. So if you are looking for a book full of grit, heart and steam, then I suggest you go read Collision.

This was a pretty good read. Slater was fourteen years old when he helped the other foster kids at the home they were living in and escaped after discovering the foster dad had killed the youngest girl, Mia. Slater is the king he is the oldest of his siblings they grew up on the streets and growing up the way he did you had to be tough and he will go to any lengths to protect his family. Slater meets Piper one night at a bar after he kicks some dudes but for making fun of her for stuttering. There's something electric between he and Piper. After weeks of meeting up at the bar they finally make plans to officially go on a date. Only Slater discovers Piper works for Child Protective Services who left him and his family in that terrible home. When Slater first hooks up with Piper it was suppose to be for one night with all of the things that is going on in his life he can't afford much more, but their is something about Piper. I really liked Piper she was strong and didn't hold back when speaking her mind Piper also grew up in a group home. Slater struggles with his feelings for Piper and what she does for a living it is something he hates. But when he finds out that a rival street gang knows how important Piper is to him, and are planning on going after her he will do anything to protect her. This was a really good book. I have read this author before and I love reading this author. This book was well written with no errors in grammar or spelling. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series.

DNF'ed at chapter 3.

Prologue was extremely well put together. The emotions and the gravity of the situation was heartfelt. Thereafter, I went into the book bubbling with excitement. However, if simply didn't come together for me at all. It was a slow and tedious read for me (until chapter 3). Then I had issues with the lead characters feelings and the way the story started to come together.

Collision: the act of colliding...

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Evie Harper takes you on a ride where hidden truths are revealed, and family secrets exposed as we drift through this alternative world she has created full of street thugs, fast cars and brutal beatings. This is a ride through the harsh streets of Portland where potholes, twists and turns exist on every road.

Slater. In the prologue you see him as child full of raw emotions. Skip to Chapter One and you see him as the man he has become. He is the King, the oldest of his siblings and he's hardcore. Growing up on the streets, being tough was his only option in order to protect his family. And he will go to any lengths to do just that. With the constant battle between an old friend and his gang, Slater has his hands more than full and isn't looking for anything more than a night. Especially with his loss that hangs over his head and clouds his heart while haunting his soul. But for Slate, one night turns into another night and before he knows it, he's in deep.

"Fuck, my life, my meaning for life has become this girl."

Piper. This woman is strong and her strength throughout this novel did not go unnoticed. Even though she was vulnerable at times, she could be just as feisty and sassy. She didn't hold back any punches when it came to Slater and always let him know what was on her mind instead of going back and forth in her head about it. Add in the fact that you can see her come into her own from the very first chapter you meet her to the epilogue and I couldn't help but fall for her as well!

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Together, these two take you on an unforgettable ride full of sensuality, suspense, acceptance, love and vulnerability. With Slater's vulgar mouth and Piper's wanton ways, you are sure to be left feeling more than promiscuous as you feel the full impact of Collision.

We do it for family stars

Foster care let this family down, not a family by blood but of love, being together was survival which lead to the start of The portland street kings a street gang.

A family that helps runaways and broken kids like they once where but at the same time a family name with a reputation that proceeds them.

It's a story of how the past can define the future but in an instant it can change. The past can also come back to haunt and it does, some good and bad.

Slate is the head of the family, a family that had had to steal and wheel & deal to survive, they have claim on their turf and like all gangs have rivals.

The main plot focuses on Slate and Piper, a bar one night stand that becomes more, their relationship and the revelations that arise.

A hot read with danger, action, angst, an alpha male and without going to much into spoilers, a fast paced, goodread.

Negatives: Finished to abrupt like an almost cliffhanger as there was no hea, a finale it seemed rushed.

This series has lots of potential. Its a gangbanger romance. (At least I think that's a trope now.) Obviously, being gang members, the men are all tattooed bad boys. There was lots of drama, a good amount of action, and a really good plot twist. All good things for fans of these types of books.

That being said, while being a good enough read, the story did not resonate with me. It was lacking a level of maturity that I would expect from 30 y/o characters. I thought, based on the super emotional and engaging prologue, that this book would get under my skin. But we go right from the prologue to raunchy sex in the bathroom of the bar, where the girl is holding on to the nasty toilet seat. At one point she even rests her head on her arms on the toilet seat. This grossed me out so much that the story started to unravel. I mean, ew, public toilet seat in a bar??? And you know public toilets dont have lids - so she was up close and personal with some nasty bodily fluids and lots of germs. I wanted to shower just reading it. And it was repeated every night for the next 3 weeks! No thank you. Why couldn't they just do it against the wall? Another thing... most of the sex was doggystyle. I prefer variety in my smut, otherwise I'm just gonna skim those parts.

I think this book may appeal to a younger crowd, but I wouldn't be surprised if the over-30 age group aren't satisfied. 3 stars / 3 flames. I was provided a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

After reading and loving You Loved Me At My Ugliest and You Loved Me At My Weakest, I couldn't wait to give the Portland Street Kings Series a try. Unfortunately it didn't work for me. Collision is book 1 and it really was ridiculous. I would have probably enjoyed it more if the characters were a lot younger. Slater was in his early thirties and Piper in her late twenties and they both felt so immature. Everything from their thoughts and actions were childish. I think the only thing that I loved was how close Slater and his family were. I'm not sure if I will read book 2.

I've enjoyed previous books by Evie Harper so as soon as I discovered that this series was on it's way, I was eager to see what it was all about. The first book in the "Portland Street Kings" series got off to a good start and my interest was piqued. The story began with a prologue that took me back in time to how the Street Kings began. Slater (the head of the gang), had not been given a great start in life. I was immediately intrigued by this man and my heart went out to him. For someone so young, Slater had a lot to deal with and this came through in his attitude and his willingness to take on responsibilities that were way beyond his years. I was struck by how much older Slater appeared to be acting, it was as though he had lost his childhood somewhere along his horrific life and had skipped straight to adulthood.
When you've lived in terror and waited for a hero who was never going to come to your rescue, you learn to become your own hero or villain.

Fast forward many years later and I was reintroduced to Slater and his gang. The Portland Street Kings were looked upon as the top street gang in Portland. At first appearances they appeared to be a nasty group, however as I got a closer look at them I discovered that they were just doing what they needed to do to survive. They had all been given a poor start in life and were now living it the only way they knew how. Through the rules of the street.
"Our enemies are many and they are always close by."

This first part of the story mostly concentrated on Slater. I totally understood Slater's reasons behind his life on the streets but adult Slater was not a character that I warmed to, unfortunately. When he met Piper, I wondered if my feelings towards him would change but sadly they didn't. Slater and Piper were instantly attracted to one another and were soon getting to know each other a hell of a lot better!! This pair did not waste any waste any time with dating, preferring to skip straight to the good part. This soon became a regular arrangement for the pair and it looked as though something was beginning to happen between them. This was where things began to go wrong as Slater discovered he shared a connection with Piper. And it wasn't a good kind of connection, resulting in Piper being placed in the middle of a frightening gang war.
She's fucking perfect for my dick, but not perfect for my lifestyle.

Piper was a character that frustrated me, although I liked her, I just couldn't understand some of her actions. She was obviously an intelligent and independent woman with a responsible job. She didn't appear to be the kind of woman that would allow herself to be used for sex yet that was exactly what she was doing and in the men's toilet cubicle of all places!!! Not exactly a romantic environment!!! Piper then continued to return to that same toilet night after night to have sex with Slater and I began to wonder where her self-respect was. She must have been highly attracted to rough and ready bad boys like Slater and that was something I couldn't comprehend.
He's all I want, who I feel I've waited for all of my life.

The story progressed and it was one that was filled with some drama, quite a bit of sex and some unexpected twists along the way but despite this, I just couldn't get into the story at all. I found myself beginning to lose interest and I feel that this was because I found it difficult to connect with the characters. Sadly this book was not as good as I had hoped. I liked the premise of the story and it did start off well but I am sorry to say that I was left feeling a little disappointed.

I rated "Collision" ❤️❤️❤️

+++ 5 COLLIDING STARS!!! +++

“I’m going to claim you, Piper. I’m going to own you, body and soul. I’m going to bring you into my world and you’re going to be my queen.”

Collision was the first Evie Harper book I've read and I was not disappointed at all!! It reminded me of The Fast and the Furious mixed with The Outsiders. Growing up in Portland, you had to be tough and gain respect, if not you'd be walked on and get killed.

If I tried to describe to you how this book made me feel, I’d be up all night. Ugh for this book... this story gave me so many feels! I can't with this book! It was pure mind f*ckery at its best.

Slater. In the prologue we're introduced to him as a child and the harsh and brutal conditions he lived through along with his foster siblings. They manage to escape after a tragic event shattered their world and they decide enough is enough. No more abuse. No more neglect. No more pain. Fast forward the years and we meet the man he becomes; a street thug who’s the King of the streets in Portland. His family and him did whatever they had to, to survive. He's tough and hardcore but he protects what he loves.

Piper. She has a speech impairment but it doesn't stop her from being fierce and incredibly strong. She's one of those characters that grows throughout the book. At first you notice her shy and vulnerable side; soon you witness her feisty and I-don't-take-sh*t-from-no-one side. When it came to Slater she never fought against what she felt for him and she wasn't afraid to bring him down a peg or two.

Together these two were fire and ice. There were moments my heart shattered and ached for them both. But they also managed to leave me swooning and hot and bothered with their electric and steamy moments.

This book will play with your emotions and take you on a mind blowing ride full of twists and turns. Truths are revealed and a life changing secret is exposed ultimately changing the course of the book. I couldn't help but fall for this story, these characters, and I want more!!! Evie Harper is pure genius.

The prologue was super intense, got off on a nice disturbing start. I loved how the characters were formed and their take on the system. So much pain and heartache. But the story contradicts itself. Slater is suppose to be a harden murdering criminal, but he wants to save everyone. Rather than settling issues with guns or blow his enemies away, he packs brass knuckles and baseball bats. Reminds me of the nineteen eighty three movie "The Outsiders". For a man who hates the system he falls for Piper and forgives her being a CPS worker quickly. Growing up the way he and his siblings did, you'd think he'd harbor more resentment, mistrust and a slew of other things. The story itself was cute, lighthearted and a good read. I liked it, not loved it but was okay with the plot. Enjoy!

When I was fourteen years old, I killed for the first time. That day I learned cruelty wasn’t only within the walls we had just escaped.

It hasn’t been easy growing up in the middle of a war. A struggle to find shelter. Fighting to protect our bodies against the corruption of the streets. Nobody cared about the street kids who had to beg and steal to eat.

“Slater’s head tips to the side just slightly, and his eyes gleam with a hint of the trouble he could get any woman into. Trouble those eyes did get me into. I fell for that adorable smile and his playful gaze, and it wasn’t worth the fall or the pain.”

5 crash into me stars!! Wow….what a dark, emotional ride!

Slater and Piper…..what a dark, twisted and love fueled story. I am obsessed with this book and I will say I need more…..I love a good dark book and this one hit all the points for me! I don’t want to give too much away with my review, but I will say that this book is worth every single second of time read!

I loved the beginning of this book so much. I totally felt it, majorly heart grabbing. When it got further along in the book, it lost me, which is so sad. So much of it seems too silly so I couldn't take it seriously. Even though I majorly fell for the first bit, I can't give a high rating because of what happened later. I do believe that many will love the entire story. This may just be an issue for me.

**JOSIE'S REVIEW**

I really enjoy this author’s writing so when I heard she had another book coming out I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it. This author has this uncanny ability to write gritty novels and that turn into the most amazing reads I have ever read.

This book started off with a bang and kept me interested until the very end. The prologue crushed me and did I expect anything less? No because that is what this author does. She starts off the book in a way that you just have to keep going. At the prologue we are introduced to Slater and his foster siblings, Pacer, Della, Mack and Kelso. We see how their tragic and violate start lead them to where they are today. Slater has always been the caretaker to his siblings. Years later, Slater is the leader of the Portland Street Kings.

Slater’s character immediately held my interest. He was mature beyond his years regardless of what he had to do. Slater appears to be hard, cold and vicious when in reality he is far from that man. He had to become this way in order to keep his family safe, clothed and fed. Their way of life is and was the streets.

Slater’s character was hard for me to get a read on even. I understood he lived a hard life and because of that he was hard, cold and standoffish. Slater meets Piper and a local bar and they have an instant attraction. They did not start off as having a relationship but they did have a lot of some steamy sex. Although they only share a sexual relationship with each other the more time they are around each other the more feelings are developed. And honestly I thought ok this it now we are getting somewhere with them. I was wrong. Slater completely changes once he learns that Piper’s lifestyle is SOMETHING HE CAN NOT DEAL WITH. Slater becomes cruel, vicious, careless and wants nothing to do with her. Slater and his gang are in a war with the Parkland Poison Boys, and that rivalry puts Piper right in the middle of their war.

I really loved Piper. She is strong, smart, independent and she is determined to make a difference. I loved how she did not hide her sexual desires from Slater and when he was cruel with her she did not take it lying down. With all Slater’s anger and hate Piper shows him who she really is and how their pasts are not as different as he thinks. When Slater and his gang have to protect Piper and take her into their home, they start to realize there is more going on between them.

Collision is filled with danger, street racing, Speed wars, violence, death and unpredicted twists. I loved seeing how Slater redeemed himself. He is still the cold leader but he also is capable of so much more and he shows us how he can be. I loved seeing Piper’s growth as well in this story. She sees what the gang is doing and why Slater is the way he is. She is determined to be the woman they all need.

The author did an amazing job in keeping me invested in the story and the characters. So when things started to come into play I was shocked when the truth was revealed. The characters are relatable. The street life was something that I know about and I fell in love with this gang. There is more than one rival gang wanting to take Slater and his gang out. When they have to go to war with an unknown enemy can Slater and the Portland Street Kings win this battle? Will Slater and Piper rule the gang as King and Queen? When the truth is revealed will it end the Portland Street Kings or make them stronger? You’ll have to pick this up to find out but let me just say get ready for a ride of your life.

This, my friends, is what I like to call a guilty pleasure. It's one of those books where you escape reality, losing yourself for a little while and loving every minute of it. It's been several weeks since I've read Collision, but as I write this review I still remember how much I enjoyed the story and connected with the characters. That's the sign of a good book!

Collision starts off with a bang, and I'm not talking about a gunshot ;) Piper and Slater meet in a bar where she's bullied about her stutter. Slater stands up for her and they soon find themselves in a stall in the restroom. You're probably thinking 'whoa!...that's way to fast', but it was actually perfect for the storyline and development of the relationship. The sexual relationship, and that's all that they have at first, is explosive, hot and Slater has a deliciously dirty mouth - one of my favorite traits in an alpha male.

Slater realizes that he has longer term feelings for Piper and wants to officially take her on a date. Things take a turn for the worse when he finds out that she is actually a social worker. He HATES "the system" because he grew up in it and blames his social worker for his terrible childhood. Slater and his "siblings" ran away when they were younger, growing up on the streets and eventually becoming the Portland Street Kings, a gang involved in illegal street racing. They are a very tight knit family though who will protect each other at all costs.

A rival gang member notices Slater's attraction to Piper and threatens her life to get back at him. Although he's pushing her away due to her job, he forces her to move in with him so he can protect her. As you can imagine, there is a lot of push and pull between the two as they fight their attraction for each other.

The book also takes a very surprising turn at 74%, where there is an OMG! WTF! moment that I NEVER saw coming!

I really fell for Slater and Piper. There where moments where I did tear up, especially over Piper's problems with her stutter. She is such a sweet and caring person who loves her job and wants what's best for all the children she works for. Slater is incredibly loyal to his family and although he may dislike what Piper does, he is very protective of her. They are truly meant for each other.

Harper has brilliantly set this up to be a series, and I can't wait to read the next book. There are many characters and storylines that can grow out of this and some future relationships have already been hinted at. If you're looking for a quick, action packed, erotic read with a hot alpha male then I highly recommend Collision!

When I first learned of this new series from Evie Harper, I knew right away that it was one that I would be reading. The plotline and characters looked so fresh and original and I was literally dying to get my hands on this first book in the series. Collision starts out with a bang, the drama and intensity draw you into the story from the very first few words, spinning a dark tale of foster children trapped in the house from hell. After a tragedy strikes, a young Slater manages to free himself and a few other children from the grasp of a vicious man. Together, they form their own family, one intent on always looking out for each other and protecting each other with their very lives.

When we next see the children, they have grown up - grown up hard. They are now the The Portland Street Kings, the most feared and respected gang in Portland. They offer protection to those that need it, and fierce punishments to those that cross them. Family is their priority, running the streets plays a close second. What I loved about this was that over the years, they didn’t lose the bond they built in that horrible home, it only strengthened with time. Each character is complex and I know I’m going to be picking up the rest of the books in this series to get to know their stories.

Piper is not a woman that makes impulsive decisions. Cursed with a stutter that leaves her with a low self-esteem and feeling of self-consciousness, she tends to avoid situations that make her flustered or uncomfortable out of fear of pity or disgust over her impediment. Meeting Slater in a bar one night changes all that, the sparks fly between them and their connection is immediate. Denying him is not an option and Piper is surprised to find she doesn’t want to. Slater is what her body both craves and knows she should run from. He has the power to steal her heart or crush it under his foot.
“I’m going to claim you, Piper. I’m going to own you, body and soul. I’m going to bring you into my world and you’re going to be my queen.”

Evie has created a book full of twists and turns and surprises that just keep coming. I enjoyed the action, parts of the book felt like I was watching a movie. The characters were relatable and I’m excited to see where this series goes with the next books.

When two gangs are on a collision course for disaster, will everyone be left standing at the finish line? Check out this first book in the Portland Street Kings series to find out.

Get ready to lose your breath!

My god I can't even find the words to express how amazing this book is! I've been in the system and I can honestly say I was lucky. But this book touches on the ones who weren't so lucky. It's hard the system is seriously flawed those who are meant to help and protect us and keep us safe don't. They only care about their paychecks and not about those they are supposedly helping. It sucks I've seen kids be taken from bad only to be placed in worse. And Piper she's what we hope the abused children of the world get for a case worker. She really cares. And the world sure needs more people like her. Ok, that said, this book was amazing nothing is as it seems. What you think you know is wrong. I was totally shocked by the turn of events that took place in this book and I can't wait for book 2 because this book was absolutely amazing and so freaking HOT!! I'm telling you Author Evie Harper has some serious mad gifts in the writing department! I fell into this book so fast and hard I felt like I was actually living in the moment! Every page I breathed the same air , fought the same battles, and felt every delicious thrust made my Slater whew how absolutely mind blowing it was too! Seriously, you have definitely got to read this book! It was beyond words awesome!!

I was fortunate enough to receive an ARC via The Booktique in exchange for an honest opinion.

Right I have to get this off my chest - I floved Evie from reading her debut book You Loved Me At My Darkest and the follow up was just as good. Then she announced the release of Collision, the first book in the Portland Kings Series and I started to feel a little anxious. See I've had this happen before - I love a debut book / series and start stalking the author and build a relationship only to discover I'm not keen on the next release and things become a little bit #awkward. So I'm nervous and hyperventilating a little and then up pops Collision on my Kindle.

We meet Slater and his brothers and sister when they are young in a group home that quite frankly isn't fit to be a dogs kennel. Their foster 'father' is an abusive piece of scum and a tragedy leaves Slater and his siblings with no choice but to flee to the streets of Portland. Forced to drag themselves up, Slater takes charge of this motley crew who turn to any means necessary to put food on the table and clothes on their back. This soon earns them a reputation as street thugs and it's one they live up to well. Slater will do anything to keep his family safe and away from the system that failed them.

Piper is a CPS worker who moves to Portland in a bid to help more children who are in the system. On a night out at a local bar she encounters a douche who ridicules her for her stutter. Situations which make her nervous or scared exacerbate her stutter making things worse so she is grateful when a muscly tattooed hulk of a man stands up for her. Slater defends Piper and makes her feel wanted and not flawed.

Slater is not the kind of man who keeps women around long term and Piper is not the kind of girl who lives that close to the edge. Can the two of these put their differences aside and respond to the chemistry between them that is palpable. One thing is for sure - a dragged up street urchin with contempt for the authorities and a CPS worker are not going to have an easy ride.

As I slide down in the front seat so I can't be seen, I laugh. "Pfff, Slater, you can't kick every guy's ass who checks me out."

Slater shakes his head playfully and then pierces me with an intense glare. "Oh, baby, you have so much to learn about me."

This book had twists and turns I was not expecting including a serious headf*%k. I adored all the Portland Street Kings and I am so pleased my worrying was for nothing. I have to say I floved this more than YLMAMD and I cannot wait for Fatal (which I think should released on March 25th). I'm soooooooo hoping it's Mack and Lana's story.

One thing about Evie Harper's writing that I've learned through her You Loved Me series is that she creates complex characters who transform throughout the course of their text. The conversions the hero/heroine go through are never easy because they're usually dealing with complicated situations that could quite possibly bring them to the depth of darkness, but, somehow, due to their strong willed nature and fighter instincts, they pull themselves out, and even though they do not remain unscathed, they do what they have to do to survive.

From the Prologue of Collision, readers easily ascertain that Slater epitomizes Harper's hero characteristics. He's had to fight since childhood to protect his family, and he's done things that most definitely make him look like a street thug and a dangerous man, but he's crossed those lines for his family because he protects what's his - he always has and he always will regardless of the cost to him personally.

If there's a woman out there who can handle the domineering leader of the Portland Street Kings is Piper, even if people think otherwise due to her speech impediment. Piper's inner turmoil made me plagued with feelings of inadequacy and rejection, but on the outside, she's a sassy, independent woman who wants to give kids a better chance at life, which is the main reason she became a social worker.

Slater and Piper may seem like they're on opposite ends of the law, especially given Slater's disdain for the CPS, but they're more alike than either of them realize, which is why they have an instantaneous connection. But despite their sizzling attraction, Slater tries to distance himself from Piper, thinking she's not made for his world or what he's already lost. That perspective, though, doesn't last too long when their worlds collide in a way that they nor readers saw coming but what that means for them is anyone's guess with all of the twists and turns Evie Harper takes them on throughout the text.

Collision has everything that I've come to expect from Evie Harper. Slater and Piper are dynamic characters who grow throughout the story line, and there's a great cast of supporting characters whose stories will need to be told because they will draw readers in from the start. The action and drama is interesting, and it fits the plotline and the back story of the text extremely well, and while some of it will be hard to wrap your head around, Slater and Piper's story is definitely one readers will want to check out.

DNF @ 21%, because like its name, this was a train wreck of a story.

First, some technical issues. Nothing screams low-effort like a poorly formatted ebook. My Kindle edition changed font type and size several times over the course of the prologue and the three-and-a-half chapters I read. And the last paragraph of each chapter was in bold, for some reason? I thought it was another glitch at first--heaven only knows how many I've had to iron out from my own works when I'm formatting--but it kept happening, so it must be deliberate. To me, bolding the last bit for emphasis seems like the author is trying too hard.

Now, the story issues. The story is told in alternating first-person present-tense narration. I have a personal distaste for present tense works, but I'm willing to set that aside if the story calls for it--I don't think it does here. And worse, the prologue is set in the past, Slater giving his account of his experiences as a foster child of eleven--but the narrative style is precisely the same as adult Slater, which also ends up being the same as Piper, his love interest. First person narrators need to sound distinct from each other.

Then, there's the setup. Piper walks into a bar, sees Slater, and pretty much immediately follows him to the men's bathroom so they can bang. No slut-shaming here, consenting adults and all, but she meets him again the weekend after that, and again, and again. They have four bathroom hookups before he decides to ask her on a real date.

Only then do we find out (at 20% in, a full fifth of the way through the story) what the conflict between our two lovers is.

He hates Child Protective Services because he escaped an abusive foster home, and she's a CPS agent who went into that line of work because she was also in the system, but never made it past the group-home stage; no one want to adopt her because of her stutter.

Really? Really? How ridiculous is that, that two random people who decide to bone each other weekly for a month in bar bathroom both happen to be former system kids, and they're perfectly opposed? I'm supposed to believe that?

I gave up when Piper launched into a full chapter of weepy, sentimental backstory about her childhood, because I just couldn't take it anymore.

The story begins with Slater, a twelve year old leading his three younger foster siblings in an attempt to flee their abusive home. I'll admit, I had a hard time with this one, simply because I struggled with my ability to suspend disbelief. My thirteen year old is incapable of changing his socks most days, so the idea that he could not only help his siblings escape and survive on the streets for twenty years is just too much to wrap my head around. (Though I do get rising to the occasion when faced with extenuating circumstances.) I applaud the originality of the storyline, because it was very different from a lot of stories out there right now. There is a twist that many will likely not see coming (though I had it figured out pretty early on.) I will likely continue with the series just to get the entire story and how the family's upbringing still affects their lives today, but this one was three stars for me.

Collision is the first book I have read by this author. It won't be the last book I read by her. I fell in love with the Portland Street Kings. Slater is a tough bad boy. He grew up in a bad foster home than on the streets. He has made a family form his foster siblings. They are not the traditional family but they have a strong tight bound that is better then most traditional families.

Piper is a social worker. She is good at her job and makes sure the children in her care are taking care off. She grew up in foster care.

Slater and Piper cross paths at a bar and have some hook ups in the bathroom. When a rival gang threaten Piper, Slater brings her home. He is not happy with her job.

There are definitely some twists and turns that had me really surprised. Collision is a great story that kept me interested from beginning to end. I can't wait to red the next book.

Blurb:
When I was fourteen years old, I killed for the first time. That day I learned cruelty wasn’t only within the walls we had just escaped.

It hasn’t been easy growing up in the middle of a war. A struggle to find shelter. Fighting to protect our bodies against the corruption of the streets. Nobody cared about the street kids who had to beg and steal to eat.

Now we are the Portland Street Kings – A family forged through loyalty not blood. To get through this life of broken dreams alive, we’ve become hard, uncaring and merciless. We do what must be done to keep our family safe, we will harm those who stand against us.

We have it all, feared and respected by those on the streets. Then she collided into my world, and with her came demons from my past, back to haunt us all.
