Matchmaker of Magics is a YA fantasy novel, the first of The Bleaken Series, which, in my opinion, could be enjoyed eually well by both YA and adult readers. It is an exciting and fast-moving story in which the author succeeds in blending magical powers with human emotion and endeavour extremely well. It is set partly in the tiny village of Bleaken, and partly in the capital city of Verdigreen.

The main character is Sacha Bleaken, a young woman born into a family whose ancestors founded the villag

Matchmaker of Magics is a surprising book—perhaps it wouldn’t be too much to say astonishing. Mara Fields has imagined a world I love to live in, a world both magical and mundane, full of both delight and danger, a world imagined with all five senses wide open.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! Though it’s categorized as YA, I’m an adult and loved it because the story is engrossing, and the characters are deep and interesting. The story is of a determined heroine who doesn’t quite fit in to her village, and ends up banished to the large city. But banishment doesn’t stop her from living her life and working to uncover the mysteries of the Savage creatures (beasts that have been raiding towns and villages for two hundred years, stealing people away from th ...more

The world the author creates in "Matchmaker of Magics" is fantastical and original. There is also a realism in her writing, especially in her descriptions of the heroine's reactions to the sometimes terrifying, sometimes heart breaking situations that happen to her. It was this realism that really kept me engaged and I could relate to the character in a way that was surprising given the setting of the story in a strange and dangerous other world. I appreciate a good story told from a female pers ...more

Mara is proud to have been born and raised in the Pacific Northwest where two of her favorite authors also reside (Ursla LeGuin and Patricia McKillip). Whether playing the guitar (rather badly), or painting, or writing, or cooking, Mara builds time for creativity in her life.
