Jason Jacks is a sadistic serial killer, with a penchant for killing couples. Jaz and Edward Sullivan are newlyweds on holiday in Cornwall, staying in Ed’s old family home.
Jason Jacks is just about the worst kind of house guest anyone could wish for. Because if he comes a-knockin’, then you’re as good as dead…
This is extreme horror, as is everything by Sam West. It is for the most hardened horror fans only. (And even then, please proceed with caution.)
Includes the first chapter of ‘Home Intruder 2’ at the end of the novella.
Sam West is a British, extreme horror author with more than forty books to her name. If you like your fiction dark, gritty, gory, perverse and truly terrifying, then you're in the right place.
Gripping tale about a wedding photographer, a newly wed couple, an ex-girlfriend and a return to a childhood home. Jason Janz plays special games with couples. Here he's into a foursome for the very first time. Will anybody survive his game? What are his plans? Explicit language, depraved action but plausible characters and a nice flow in the prose. Don't trust anybody. Don't take anything for granted. Don't invite your ex when you're newly wed. Don't travel back into the past. LOL. This book has some fine lessons inside. Recommended.
So, Jason Jacks is a serial killer targeting couples, forcing them to play in his sick and twisted games. Well, why? Because he can? Ugh. A bit similar to the movie "Funny Games" but less entertaining and sensible. I didn't like it. The killer--Jason, I expected more from his character. He was written as someone who's ruthless and cut-throat but he somewhat appeared amateur to me, it almost like he didn't plan this attack strategically. He was like; "Yep, I am a serial killer, I'm gonna inflict pain." but really failed in that department.
Also, the extra characters were completely unnecessary, I would've preferred it if Jason focused more on the couple--Jaz and Ed. Linda and the other guys didn't add spice to the already bland meal. Sorry.
Another novella in the extreme horror category, although I do have to ask how they decide it’s extreme because in most cases, it ain’t what I would call extreme. I mean have they never read Edward Lee or Wrath James White, now that’s fucking extreme and this, well I beg to differ.
Home Intruder starts off catapulting rapidly out of the blocks with the first chapter, our intruder stalks couples who obviously love each other deeply and then intrudes in every sense of the word, torture, rape and impossible choices concerning your loved one are the order of the day. The start has some suitably wincing moments and we then take the foot of the gas a little as our not so friendly visitor stalks a new couple.
Edward and Jazmine Sullivan inherit a seaside property in Cornwall, they make their way down there from London to get the place ready for sale. It’s the house Ed grew up in and they run into his old flame and her boyfriend, a couple of wasters who force themselves into the picture with a curry and alcohol.
Our Intruder does what he does best, a good bit of intruding and suddenly he’s taken the loving couple and the ex, Linda hostage. Queue a little bit of psychological horror, violence and a continuity error that in a novella just shouldn’t happen. It’s criminal.
Linda who is unconscious at the kitchen table after having her bonce driven into said table is suddenly running off down the hall trying to escape and then after this failed attempt she’s back to her unconscious state. It was of course Jaz who ran down the hall and when she reaches the door, her head is rammed into the fine piece of timber and she is pulled backwards by her hair to land on her back, then dragged by her hair back into the kitchen. Sounds quite fucking painful if you ask me but the guy is a psychopath and intruding is the order of the day. Story cuts somewhere else for a short time and its back to Jaz whose stomach is in agony because of the way she’s been dragged, hang on a minute, what’s going on here, doesn’t sound right to me, she was dragged back like a sack of potatoes and of course she must of flipped over mid-drag. That’s it, no that’s fucked up. Didn’t sit right to me.
Along with a couple of other small errors, it sort of ruined it a little for me and it was disappointing after such a promising start but errors like that in a piece under a 100 pages are basic stuff. That said there’s some promise here and I think I’ll give Sam West another go, just the one anyway.
As this book was labeled "Extreme Horror" and was written by Sam West I expected far more than I got. I'm not slagging the story off, it was full of goreness and shockingly good but it was missing depth and character development...It seemed rushed and maybe could have been so much better if it was a longer book? The intruder also seemed a bit of an amateur considering he was a serial killer/torturer of couples. The ending... which I wasn't expecting... did add some shock value to the book.
I've got to give it 4 ⭐⭐⭐⭐'s because it had the potential to be a very good Home Intruder Extreme Horror.
I like the games the home intruder played with his victims. It was a more hands on version of Jigsaw (Saw) or the Collector. I kinda hate how short it was, but that's better than endless filler that isn't gore (,gore holds my attention). I'm so glad there's a sequel. I'm excited to read it
I guess it should've told me something when i was 49% done and the psycho killer was just now ringing the door bell. Add to that, that the kindle said it was 46 minutes left in the book. So I only have myself to blame for thinking it wouldn't end as abruptly as it did. Everything was a big game of who would you rather hurt once the psycho arrived. But a rather short lived game.
I got my Kindle Unlimited subscription renewed a couple days ago, and I accidentally found this author, Sam West, while looking for any titles from Matt Shaw that I might have missed in the past couple months. Amazon said… ‘Oh, you like this twisted stuff? Here, try THIS guy. He might make you puke!’ There are five novellas available, I grabbed this one first only because it’s the first one Amazon recommended. The synopsis, and the words ‘Extreme Horror Novella’ grabbed my attention right away. The cringe-inducing scene on the first page drew me in even further. As far as torture goes, Sam West is pretty original. Probably a bit unstable, too. (You know I’m teasing!) I learned a new phrase – “The back of beyond”. I like it. It sounds a little more civilized than BFE ;) I can’t wait to read the other four books! Join the discussion on BBB!
Extreme horror? Hmm, not so much. I've read a few books by Sam West. Thought Sam was a man. Maybe I need to get to know her more..and keep reading her books.
Okay, first few pages had me - it was grim, I winced, I grimaced, it was wonderful.
Then we didn't see the sadist again.
The Jason Jacks in the beginning and the Jason Jacks in the rest of the book are basically 2 separate people and the first one is actually horrifying. He comes across as completely sadistic, well equipped for torturous home invasions, I mean - come on- there's fish wire hooked into a guys rectum at the start - it was phenomenal, reminding me a lot of the film series 'The Collector' but then later on, he can barely keep everything together, there's no imagination, what happened???!
My other gripe with this is it toned itself down entirely, like I said, there was fish wire at the start and when we actually get to the good bits, it's "eat your own vomit, flay a little bit of skin of the woman you hate" - talk about starting off strong.
Also, I'm sorry, but this thing is 83? pages and you couldn't be bothered to edit your spelling mistakes? It's just lazy, no matter what program you use, there's always a spellcheck.
My last, and possibly the most irritating thing - Jaz was raped for maybe 2/3 mins, and he clearly wasn't done yet seeing and they were interrupted as she got pushed aside because Ed tackled him - so even if there were swimmers sticking around from previous times, it's like a 4% chance she'd get pregnant and even less of a chance it'd be his - but I guess for shock value and also because you need to write a sequel huh?
Don't even get me started on the what, 3? year old rape baby cutting into a baby bird just to hurt it and turning out exactly like his father?
I'll give Sam West one more go, but I'm not overly optimistic.
During the prologue of this Novella, I was thinking whoa, maybe I should find a seat belt. This is gonna be an intense ride!
Then, the main story started and disappointed me from the beginning. The way that Jason was introduced to the story was quite silly to me and I felt that Linda, and all the other characters for that matter besides Ed and Jaz were created solely to increase the story's kill count with no real meaning.
I guess I'm trying to say that the story lacks any real depth, and the depth that is does allow is shallow and insignificant.
I'm not trying to portray that I disliked this book! I thought it was ok. It just didn't live up to it's own title and synopsis.
Another thing I would like to touch on is the "Extreme Horror" in the title and title like it. We seriously need to come up with an esrb type rating for horror books because this wasn't extreme to me. I equate this book to a movie like panic room or phone booth (sorry). Everybody has a different sense of extreme and I feel my threshold must be near the top because I'm consistently disappointed by books with this claim.
Give this book a try and form your own opinion. It a quick read.
Rounded up to 3.5. The plot Home Intruder reminded me a little of Broken Dolls in that there’s a “how much do you love…” situation where people are asked to complete brutal tasks to others.
While I read I couldn’t help but think “would I be able to do…” When I told my wife one of the scenarios the husband was asked, I was actually surprised at her response. She didn’t think I’d be able to complete one so she’d volunteer to subject herself for the other.
I pray we are never put in that situation or anything even remotely close to it.
I know some might want more backstory to the “home intruder” but it didn’t bother me.
As are most of my reads the book is NOT for everyone.
This is my second novella I've read from Sam West. While I did prefer the first one I read, (which was 'School Reunion') I still enjoyed this one. Although the it takes around fifty pages to get into the actual action, the action is brutal and gory. The character development, especially of Linda, is really quite fascinating and interesting. This novella does not lack on gore and graphic nature either especially with the last twenty pages. All in all, good read.
Part of a Facebook reading challenge I read this one - not my usual genre so if gore thriller novellas are your thing, you might love this one but it wasn’t for me.
I was confused by the start of the book - and how it linked with the rest of the story. The characters were annoying so I didn’t really care much for what happened. In fact if anything, I was more interested in the bad guy.
2.75 Stars Overall. Prologue is slightly misleading although contains extreme gore. The plot of the Novel is simplistic but the ending let’s the novel down and is quite predictable.
Worth it for the first few pages-

There’s a lot of turds in this genre but this may be the worst. What a fucking pile of dogshit. Boring as hell and weak for splatterpunk. I’d rather watch 10 dudes blow 9 dudes before reading this ass again.
My first DNF of the year. I don't know if I'm missing a good story, but when I read that Jaz referred to Ed as her fiance instead of as her husband, I decided to quit. Too many books pending reading to waste time with a poorly edited one.
Short...to the point. I think you know the premise. You just have to guess at the ending. Not a bad read, but the story has been told way too many times the same way.
I'm always curious when a book is labeled "extreme horror," a subset of the horror genre which I greatly enjoy. Naturally, I had my hopes up. Unfortunately, this book didn't quite deliver.
The story started out well enough, with a brutal scene of torture and torment, though it did annoy me a bit that the entire prologue was italicized. Nevertheless, it held promise. Hope for further "extreme horror" rapidly faded as the story became more of a soap opera for the first half of the book. Entertaining, sure, but not remotely horrific. Then, finally, Jason Jacks, the crazed psychopath credited with inflicting the gore within the prologue, pays a visit to the main characters, Edward and Jazmine Sullivan. The Sullivans are a happily married couple--precisely the type Jacks preys upon as he torments them with his "how much do you love your spouse" twisted game. This time, however, Jacks has invited another person to the party. Edward's ex-girlfriend, who foolishly believes that she can have Edward again, joins in the fun. And then things just go from blah drama to urggghhh frustration.
Jacks is not believable as a seasoned serial killer due to his stupid choices. And speaking of stupid choices, a LOT of them are made by practically every single character introduced. I wanted to bang my head against my iPad screen. I don't mean to be harsh, I guess the disappointment is unleashing my usually-well-hidden nasty streak.
The bottom line is, this book had a ton of potential but didn't rise to the challenge. I would definitely not classify it as extreme horror. In my opinion, psychological horror/thriller would be more apt.
I might try another book by this author but I'll wait until my mood improves...!
