This is a book that Mr. Sweat, my fifth-grade teacher, read to us as we did whatever. I found a copy of it at the thrift store and decided to take a stroll down memory lane. It is as funny and as sad as I remember it. Guess it's the real neat thing to have kids' books that deal with death, even if it's only the death of dogs.

I remember we were pretty enraptured by this story of these sneaky little boys and their troubles and fun. I think it'll be a good book to read to my boys. As long as I hide the bacon grease first.

Re-read as read-aloud to children. Still laugh-out-loud funny, but also sob-out-loud sad in a few places.

Another read aloud in the books! I absolutely loved Me and Caleb. I seriously looked forward to reading it aloud to my kids every night, which, if you do a lot of reading aloud, you know that’s what makes our breaks your ability to actually make reading aloud part of your regular everyday life. As a parent you have to enjoy the book too! And honestly, I just loved this one. Especially the first and last chapters, they literally had us all belly laughing.

Me and Caleb is an old book, and you likely haven’t heard of it, because im pretty sure they don’t print it anymore. It’s the story about two brothers who get into a lot of trouble and have a lot of silly adventures in their hometown. It definitely has that old time, nostalgic vibe to it in the best way. Think Mayberry and the Andy Griffith show.

I also love that each chapter was like its own short story, so it made for an easy read aloud every night because each chapter was its own little vignette. I also just love the glimpse into what life might have been like for two boys growing up in a small town in what I’m pretty sure was the 1920s or 30s.

I don’t think I’m doing a great job at capturing the essence of this book, but just know that it was funny and charming and full of adventurous boys getting into these really funny scrapes—I just thoroughly enjoyed every second of reading it.

What a wholesome, lovely, entertaining and heartfelt read. I was first introduced to "Me and Caleb" and "Me and Caleb again" by my 6th grade teacher, Ms Jobe. I looked forward to Fridays as that was the day our class went to the library & Ms Jobe read a few chapters to us. I was hooked from the first chapter. Mr Meyer wrote a third installment titled "More Me and Caleb, Again" decades later. Mr Meyer has touched multiple generations with his wonderful works. Thank you Mr Meyer for such a bright spot in my childhood and thank you Ms Jobe for investing in your students.

A remembered treasure from my childhood, I loved this book as much the second time around but worry that in today's protective culture, my grandchildren might not see the charm. From Goodreads: "Me and Caleb" is a lively and heartwarming story about two young brothers growing up in a small Missouri town ... with plenty of adventure, lots of laughs, and some good, old-fashioned hijinks.

One of my Mom’s favorites of all time, with good reason. This book will make you laugh and cry and paints some amazingly funny and poignant pictures.

reread this little gem from my childhood. Bud & his brother Caleb's adventures in Harleyville. Wholesome childhood story with fishing, snowball fights, and Halloween mischief.

I found this book while searching on the library data base: keyword Appalachian Mountains. After reading the front flap, I was ready to be entertained and laugh.
" Me and Calebis a wonderfully funny book that is a pure laugh-out-loud good time! Here 12-year-old Bud tells of life with his little brother Caleb in a small Missouri town at the edge of the Ozarks......A splendid tale for kids of all ages and for parents with long memories."

We liked the book, it was fun and silly. It didn't have as much about the surrounding geographical area as I had hoped. It would be a great book to read with boys. It is a bit outdated, but probably true to what life was in that time period. My favorite chapter, An Eel for Gramps so funny made me want to be there seeing it all.

My 4th grade teacher, my favorite teacher ever, Mrs. Poer, read this book to us. I loved it. After my first child was born, I realized I just had to read it again!!! I went to the local library and found it in their system, but when I went to get it from the shelf, it wasn't there. Someone had kept it. I soon learned that it was a rare out-of-print, and much sought after book. It was going for around $150 on Ebay!!!!!! This was in the early 2000s. So I forgot about it for awhile, and years later (2006), I learned that it was finally being re-released!! I was super excited and got a copy. I read it with Phoenix when he was about 4, and I think it will be the next chapter book I read with Lark. It's just a really fun story.

I read this book when it was first published in 1962 and was delighted to discover that it has recently been republished. I remember reading passages to my mom and laughing so hard I could hardly get through them. Despite the fact that I've discovered Richard Peck in the intervening years (which makes this and many other books pale by comparison), I enjoyed re-reading it. It is quite dated, however.

Terrific book for kids. Reads a little bit like "Great Brain."

Apparently this book isn't printed anymore, but this would be a terrific book for boys to read and enjoy. About a boy and his little brother in the mountains who are up to all sorts of shenanigans. Very funny. Pretty light. No heart rending or pet slaughter, yet well worth the time to read.

Another vintage kids' chapter book that many people loved in their youth. Despite a reprinting at some point within the last decade, copies of this book and its sequel are beastly expensive. So if you happen to see one at a used book store or yard sale for a reasonable price, you should snatch it up--and then let me borrow it to read to my kids!
