Fearless Part II: Crossing Lines

Rate this book
From the author of the Walker Series comes a family drama like no other, a sprawling character epic, a forbidden love story full of angst, adventure, heartbreak, and second chances. Welcome to the mother chapter of the Lean Dogs Motorcycle Club; meet the girl raised by outlaws, and the fearsome man who will always hold her heart.

After a bloody homecoming, and a shattering run-in with her lost love, Ava Teague is launched into her past, forced by circumstance to remember the events five years ago that led to Mercy’s departure from Knoxville. At seventeen, she was raw, vulnerable, and green, and too in love with him to be coy about it. Mercy had no idea how his feelings for her had become so muddied, only that he had to do something about them. They were electric; they were doomed.

Told in installments, this is the second of four parts of a complete novel. Fearless will later be offered in its entirety, as a full 600+ page novel; the price will be comparable; Lauren wanted to experiment with releasing a novel in parts, so readers could enjoy it as she completes writing on each section. Readers can follow along with her, or wait for the finished novel. This rich narrative travels from the swamps outside New Orleans to the foothills of Tennessee, spanning fourteen years, following a family of outlaws bound by brotherhood, blood, and a love that knows no boundaries. Read Part I: “Lying Down With Dogs,” and Part II: “Crossing Lines,” and be on the lookout for Part III: “All-American Monsters,” this fall. Mercy can also be found in Lauren Gilley's third Russell novel, KEEPING BAD COMPANY, a Southern outlaw series that kicks off with book one: MADE FOR BREAKING.

Mercy and Ava...OMG....what a story. I should be disgusted (maybe many people would be) BUT NO...I think I have read so many other books where the age difference is such a big thing, a huge gap that many would not understand but I do...and they work.
I loved how this second book went back and forth in time from present day to 14 years ago and then 5 years ago and back to present day. We are given more of the history and background to the club and all the conflicts with the wealthy snobby townspeople who want to see the LEAN DOGS MC gone.
Reading about Ava as a little girl, her relationship with her protector, friend and eventually lover Mercy, was heartbreaking and painful and really down to earth honest. The tough time Ava went through in high school, being persecuted and bullied was awful, but made her the strong tough woman she is and you would expect nothing less from a girl brought up in an MC.
Some shocking things happen to Ava and from those events, the separation from Mercy begins. It was so sad to read what they both go through...she the girl crushed from her first "everything" and he the scary badass who strikes fear in everyone (except Ava) but is left with no choice but to break BOTH of their hearts.
This book does end on more cliffhangers and I can't wait for the next book!

loved this book

I can't remember how I came across this author. But I am so glad that I did. This is the first book that I have read by this author. Since reading this book/novella (first part of the book), I have read some of the author's other works and have not been disappointed.

This was a great second part of the story.

It is gritty. It is a great story - loved it loved it loved. The four parts of this novel have since been released in one book. However I read each part on its own as I just couldn't wait for the whole book to be released - I could hardly wait for each part to be released but I knew there was no way I could wait for the whole book as I enjoyed the first part so much.

Great writing - I could see the characters and settings so clearly in my head.

I don't want to ruin the story but all I can say is if you love a MC story read this.

Very slow! I've read all three books available in this series only to find that the last book is missing, despite these being published over 5 years ago! And by the time I dragged myself through the way too much tedious filler of vorinv mundane every day things, I didn't even care that book 4 was missing and meant I couldn't finish it.

Some of the descriptions are nice, but the author needs an editor to tell her she doesn't need to describe every little insignificant thing, including a road, and a porch etc. Then after you slog your way through all the excessive descriptions, what little story there is underneath is actually quite cliche and mostly non existent. I hate skim reading so read book one without skimming at all but by book two I just couldn't stand to read any more of the excessive detail.

I love Ava and Mercy. I couldn't put this down. I know I should've been a bit put off by the age difference, but I wasn't. I was rooting for them and loved them. He's such a beautifully broken character and this story was descriptive and wonderfully written. I'm so happy that I found them and I will continue reading Lauren Gilley's books. I don't usually get caught up in MC stories like this. I usually read them as an escape and don't get so emotionally invested in the characters. This was so different.

I like this series loved that this wasn't that instant love, this was a relationship that grew over years.
