Dead Endings is a fun and engaging story. While the plot is certainly well conceived, I found myself most taken with the characters. In particular, Cailen serves as an empathetic, intriguing (anti-)heroine: snarky, sarcastic, but, with a sort of vague moral sense and reluctant willingness to help. Overall, the book succeeds thanks to lively, interesting characters and a refreshing interplay of horror and humour. I enjoyed Dead Endings tremendously and I hope that you will as well.
Ever since Cailen had a near-death experience, she can see ghosts. They hang around, bothering her, and because her internal defenses are weak, they can sometimes possess her body.
Her roommate, Gabriella, is a spiritualist who has a better grasp on exorcising ghosts, and Cailen is happy to leave all the ghost-hunting to her friend and go on ignoring the spirits as much as possible.
Everett is a student reporter who is convinced that a recent series of murders needs some ghost experts to investig ...more

I have a weakness for weird fiction. I'm also partial to good writing. The issue I've always run into is this: There is far too much of the former, and far too little of the latter.
Dead Endings is brilliantly written, very weird fiction.
Of course, there have been other stories written about the paranormal. Good stories, even. What sets Dead Endings apart, for me, is the realness of the world and the people in it. Cailen is a down-to-earth person, one I can relate to -- probably more than I shoul ...more

This review may seem a tad bias since I am friends with the author, but screw it, even if I wasn't friends with her I probably still would have loved this book.
This book. Oh lord this book, did I laugh, cry and have all the feelings. Jessica Chavez, if you aren't familiar with her work in video games, is a fantastic localization writer, but if I'm frankly, she's just a fantastic writer writer (and she would kill me for the multiple uses of 'fantastic' and 'writer', on the other hand, I have stok ...more

Cailen can see ghosts and despite sounding like an exciting thing, it's not. She wants to stay away from them but when Everett asks her help to solve some mysterious murders she has no choice but to say yes.
The story has a fast dynamic, a sense of edge and a lot of action. The plot is solid and entertaining. I really enjoyed how the story evolved and the outcome was extraordinary.
