When the going gets tough, the tough get going

Detective Casey Clement has a lot on her plate. First up, there’s the latest murder a bullet through his handsome head. His colleagues are obstructive; his salary certainly couldn’t cover his luxurious lifestyle. The team untangles a web of beautiful people, blackmail and bitterness. But that’s the easy part. Tough cases are Casey’s bread and butter.

Unfortunately, the rest of her life is a whole lot tougher. She has to see a shrink. The precinct bullies have turned their malice on the whole misfit team. Internal Affairs is digging into the team’s history. And a casual acquaintance begs for help to deal with her drunken husband, triggering all Casey’s guilt over failing to save her father from alcohol-fuelled death.

Casey’s as tough as they come, but even the tough have limits. Is she about to hit hers?

About the author

S.R. Garrae

SR Garrae grew up in Scotland and then worked in international finance in London until her retirement. She lives in the UK with her family, who are somewhat bemused by but supportive of her complete change of career.

She always loved books, but didn't start to write original fiction until after she retired. She now balances writing with travel, reluctant but very necessary gym visits, and designing her own book covers.

She writes modern, romantic cop stories because those are the stories she had always turned to as a go-to read, and always loved them.

The case is one complicated web, and it was interesting to see how Casey and her team unraveled it. The characters continue to shine and with each book we learn a little bit more about each of them. O'Leary is the glue that holds it all together, always looking out for every member of the team, including Carval, who keeps giving himself more work, silly guy. The romance element isn't as strong in this book as in some of the others, but there's an understandable reason for that. This book was a little more emotionally heavy, what with everything Casey is going through. Overall, I found it an enjoyable read, that hits the right spot for those who like J.D. Robb and other similar murder mystery authors.
