J.L. Blackhurst is a pseudonym for Jenny Blackhurst who was born and grew up in Shropshire, where she still lives with her husband, two boys and two beagles. She has a Masters degree in Occupational Psychology and has worked in administration for the Fire Service and retail management before leaving to write full time.

She wrote her first book, How I Lost You after giving birth to her son in 2011 and since has written seven psychological thrillers, her first of which won her a silver Nielsen award and became a kindle number one bestseller in the UK and a Spiegel Bestselleren in Germany. Czy można znaleźć bardziej skomplikowane relacje rodzinne niż te w cyklu „Niemożliwe zbrodnie” Jenny Blackhurst? Oj, byłoby ciężko. Bo mimo że to thriller, to powiązania rodzinne są niczym z tureckiej czy brazylijskiej telenoweli!

„Nie ma dymu bez morderstwa” to druga część tej zawiłej historii, a w pierwszej „Do trzech razy śmierć” mieliśmy okazję poznać dwie przyrodnie siostry stojące po przeciwnych stronach barykady. Tess Fox jest policjantką z ambicjami, Sarah Jacobs zawodową oszustką, a tym, co je łączy, jest prowadzone wspólnie śledztwo i wzajemne podejrzenia wynikające z ich przeszłości.

W drugim tomie siostry ponownie stają ramię w ramię, by rozwiązać kolejną zagadkę „zamkniętego pokoju”, a świadomość, że popełnione zbrodnie (o tak, jest ich więcej!) w dziwny sposób łączą się z członkami ich rodziny, staje się dodatkową motywacją. Jakby mało było Tess balansowania na linie między lojalnością wobec bliskich a sprawiedliwością, dochodzi jeszcze strach, że jeśli jej rodzinne powiązania wyjdą na jaw, pożegna się z pracą. A na domiar złego jej były podwładny, teraz szef, wykorzystuje każdą okazję, by dać jej odczuć swoją władzę i osobistą urazę.

Spodobał mi się małomiasteczkowy klimat tej powieści. W Lewes lokalne niesnaski urastają do rangi wojny, za nieszczęścia obwinia się miejscową „czarownicę”, a wszyscy skrywają swoje małe sekrety -choć to często tajemnica poliszynela.

Dużo się dzieje w tej części, może nawet trochę za dużo, a na pierwszy plan wysuwają się rodzinne relacje te z trzecią siostrą, którą Tess powinna aresztować za zabójstwo ich ojca, i te z cudownie odnalezioną, choć zamieszaną w kolejną zbrodnię, macochą.

Jeśli przez chwilę wydawało mi się, Autorka już wykorzystała wszystkie możliwe zwroty akcji, to zakończenie tej książki sprawiło, że po prostu wyskoczyłam z kapci. I choć tej powieści nie nazwę moją ulubioną, to rozwiązania tej zawiłej historii rodzinnej wyczekuję z niecierpliwością i napięciem, jakie potrafi zbudować tylko Jenny Blackhurst.

Trzeci tom? Poproszę już teraz. A najlepiej na wczoraj!

This is the second book in the series following detective Tess Fox and her con artist sister Sarah and picks up right where we left off in the first book.

Whilst not totally necessary to have read Three Card Murder, I did feel that I would have been a bit confused in the beginning about the relationship between Tess, Sarah and Julia, and what had happened previously. It all gets explained in enough detail eventually but I would recommend reading them in order.

In this new story, a well-respected local councillor is murdered, with his head being found inside a bonfire night effigy of Donald Trump. Tess is keen to start delving into the man’s life to find the killer. The problem is, her co-worker who has now been promoted above her doesn’t want her taking a lead role and outshining him. But of course, that doesn’t stop her and Sarah doing their own investigations.

Meanwhile, the main suspect asks for Tess personally, and her appearance opens up another can of worms for our two main characters!

This is another great detective story - the relationship between Tess and Sarah is so funny and warm - they’re both very clever strong characters and really likeable. The whodunnit storyline is really gripping with lots of unpredictable twists and turns and it’s great seeing the two work things out and getting the better of Tess’s so-called senior in the force.

I had to read the ending twice because it was a big shock and leaves things totally wide open for the next instalment! A brilliant follow-up to the first book and I can’t wait to see what happens next!

This is Book Two in the Impossible Crimes Series hitting shelves in September 2024. I read the first instalment, Three Card Murder last year and was keen to see what our cast of characters were going to get up to in this follow-up!

What worked for me:
● I still really like Tess and Sarah, both as individuals and their dynamic together. Some of their conversations are pretty funny!
● I liked the introduction of Lily as a character - she was a slippery fish but endearing nonetheless
● The opening setting at the bonfire felt very autumnal
● Sarah’s relationship with her found family and the complexities arising from her collaboration with Tess
● The introduction of the social engineering character keeping Sarah on her toes
● It's a fast, entertaining read

What I wasn’t so keen on:
● I didn’t like the twist about Julia’s parentage as it seemed to render a lot of Tess’s motivation, especially in the first book, redundant
● I wasn’t convinced by either the method of murder, the placement of the body, or the motive of the killer
● The ending felt cheap with the surprise of Frank being alive. Again, it kinda renders the first book invalid.
● The story felt flimsy, suffering a bit from middle book syndrome - the murder felt more like a device to strengthen Tess and Sarah’s bond and it didn’t feel as urgent as those of the first book. This story really wants to focus on the family dynamics but the murder plot suffers for it.

I’m sure that the various plotholes and questions will be addressed in the next book; but, I’m not convinced that this needed the be a series or that this book works particularly well on its own. Folks who enjoyed the previous book will take something away from this but to readers new to the series, I would strongly advise reading the first instalment before picking this one up.

After picking up the first in this series only a few weeks ago, I couldn't resist continuing whilst I remembered everything!
This book follows straight on from the first so I found it handy to read them quite quickly after each other so that the information was still semi-fresh in my mind.
I really like the twists and turns this one took, the pacing is quite good and I loved the ending.
I can't wait to see what happens in #3 when it is released, hopefully soon.

Ostatnio coraz chętniej sięgam po kryminały. Zbrodnie, zagadki i zawiła fabuła sprawiają, że nie mogę się od nich oderwać. „Nie ma dymu bez morderstwa” to drugi tom z serii Niemożliwe zbrodnie, gdzie autorka kolejny raz serwuje nam historię pełną tajemnic i zdarzeń, które wywołują szybsze bicie serca.

🕯️ Akcja książki rozgrywa się w małym miasteczku Lewes. Podczas obchodów Dnia Guya Fawkesa uczestnicy odkrywają coś strasznego. Z płonącej kukły wypadają ludzkie szczątki. Jak się później okazuje ofiarą jest radny miasteczka - Rupert Millington. Podejrzenia od razu padają na kobietę, która groziła mu śmiercią. Jednak kobieta uparcie twierdzi, że została wrobiona, ale z pewnością nie ma dymu bez ognia. Tess Fox wraz z siostrą Sarah Jacobs postanawiają podjąć się tego zadania i odkryć, kto tak naprawdę stoi za tą zbrodnią. Chwilę później dochodzi do kolejnej zbrodni… Czy niezbyt zgranemu duetowi śledczych uda się rozwikłać tajemnicę tej zbrodni i znaleźć prawdziwego zabójcę, zanim zaatakuje ponownie?🕯️

Ta książka naprawdę mnie wciągnęła. Do tego stopnia, że nie mogłam jej odłożyć dopóki nie przewróciłam ostatniej kartki. Nie jest to typowo męska i mocna lektura, nie jest to też lekki i przyjemny kryminał. Autorka balansuje pomiędzy tymi dwoma aspektami po trochę, sprawiając, że książka spodoba się szerszemu gronu odbiorców. Klimat historii stworzonej przez Jenny jest tak tajemniczy i wciągający, że nie można się oderwać od lektury. Coraz to nowe fakty odkrywane przez Tess Fox i jej siostry doprowadzają do tego, że podejrzanym wydaje się być każdy. Komu można zaufać w takiej sytuacji, a na kogo trzeba uważać? Te pytania ciągle przewijały mi się w głowie. Miliony teorii pojawiające się podczas lektury i domysły o co tak naprawdę chodzi, okazały się być mylące w obliczu ostatecznego rozrachunku tej historii. Jestem pod wrażeniem zawiłości tej zagadki. 

Małomiasteczkowy klimat i hermetyczna społeczność nadaje mu autentyczności. Autorka idealnie oddała klimat miasteczka Lewes, gdzie każdy skrzętnie ukrywa swoje tajemnice, a za wszystkie nieszczęścia obwiniają innych.

Mimo iż w książce „Nie ma dymu bez morderstwa” autorka bardziej skupia się relacji pomiędzy siostrami i ich więziach rodzinnych, a sama zagadka schodzi trochę na dalszy plan to i tak, książka bardzo mi się spodobała. Nie sposób się od niej oderwać. Tess Fox i Sarah Jacobs to temperamentne kobiety. Tess jest błyskotliwa i twardo stąpająca po ziemi, natomiast Sarah jest trochę lekkomyślna, umie doskonale manipulować ludźmi, a jej energia wprowadziła w książce więcej dynamizmu.

„Nie ma dymu bez morderstwa” to z pewnością przyjemny kryminał, który wciągnie was w akcję i nie pozwoli się odłożyć dopóki nie poznacie zakończenia, a uwierzcie mi, na koniec autorka przygotowała zabójczy finał. 🕯️

Czy sądzisz, że każda rodzina skrywa swoje sekrety?

„Nie ma dymu bez morderstwa” Jenny Blackhurst to drugi tom serii o siostrach, które więcej dzieli niż łączy. Ale czy na pewno? Jeśli wydawało Ci się, że jedna z nich - policyjna detektyw Tess Fox - działa wyłącznie z ramienia prawa, a druga - zawodowa oszustka Sarah Jacobs - kieruje się tylko własnym interesem, to ta część brutalnie rozprawia się z prostymi podziałami. Bo tu nie ma niewinnych. I nie ma łatwych wyborów. Są za to zwłoki. Dwie. I masa rodzinnych grzeszków.

Akcja powieści rusza z impetem podczas obchodów święta Guya Fawkesa - w płonącej kukle zamiast słomy znajdują się zwęglone szczątki posła Ruperta Millingtona. Atmosfera jest tak gęsta, że gdy pojawia się druga ofiara, niemal nie czuć różnicy - śmierć staje się codziennością. A miejscowość Lewes? To idealne tło: pełne lokalnych wojenek, przesądów i starych krzywd. Z jednej strony - bardzo cosy. Z drugiej - duszne jak niewywietrzony pokój z trupem.

Jenny Blackhurst ponownie miesza gatunki. Otrzymujemy coś między kryminałem a dramatem psychologicznym z elementami rodzinnego thrillera. Wątki „zamkniętego pokoju”, lokalnych układów i policyjnych rozgrywek mieszają się tu z emocjonalną walką Tess o zachowanie swojej tożsamości. Bo kiedy twoja rodzina przypomina bardziej przestępczy kartel niż niedzielny obiad u babci, nie da się oddzielić zawodowego śledztwa od prywatnego piekła.

Czasem odnosiłam wrażenie, że fabuła aż się ugina pod ciężarem wątków: zamordowany poseł, spalone ciało, podejrzana, która prosi siostry o pomoc, duchy przeszłości i pojawiające się jak z kapelusza nowe postaci rodzinne… Trochę tego za dużo. Szczególnie że relacje między bohaterkami - choć fascynujące - zaczynają przypominać zawiłości telenoweli. Gdzieś po drodze zabrakło tego chłodnego napięcia, które trzymało mnie w pierwszym tomie.

Ale są też rzeczy, które wynagradzają ten nadmiar: język autorki, nieoczywiste dialogi i świetna narracja. A zakończenie? Petarda. Dosłownie i w przenośni. Może nie wyskoczyłam z kapci, ale na pewno je przydeptałam w nerwach. I choć drugi tom nie przebił dla mnie „Do trzech razy śmierć”, to chętnie wrócę do tej serii - jeśli będę musiała po raz kolejny zaplątać się w te wszystkie rodzinne więzi, które są równie niebezpieczne co sam morderca.

Ocena: 7/10 - za słabszy balans między wątkiem kryminalnym a obyczajowym, ale świetną kontynuację i rewelacyjną atmosfera małego miasteczka.

Smoke and Murders is the 2nd in the series of Impossible Murders by J.L. Blackhurst featuring two sisters, Tess Fox, a police detective, and Sarah Jacobs an accomplished professional con artist. It follows on directly from Three Card Murder and while that novel was a stand alone I don't feel this would work as well if you have not read the first one. Smoke and Murders does have it's own mystery and crime but the complexity of the familial relationships mean that reading Three Card Murder first would help but these into context.

Smoke and Murders starts at the infamous Lewes bonfire celebration where every year bonfire societies create huge effigies to be burnt on bonfires around the town. This year though as the head falls off the effigy of Donald Trump the badly burned head of MP Rupert Millington rolls out.

Initially a disgruntled Tess, who was overlooked for promotion at the end of Three Card Trick, is not allocated to the case, instead she is tasked with looking in to poisoning of the cows of Babette Ramsey, but unofficially begins to look into the circumstances of Rupert Millington with her sister Sarah before finding that Babette and Rupert were also linked and the two cases are intertwined.

I really enjoyed the setting for this second novel and loved the idea of using one of the effigies to hide murdered remains in, but from that point onwards I found this to be a fairly average read. In comparison to Three Card Murder there seemed to be much less of a focus on the cons and scams which gave it a uniqueness, and far more emphasis was given to the relationships between Tess and Sarah, and introduced more family dynamics with a potential third sister, Julia, and the mother of Sarah and Julia making an entry.

As the plot continues J.L. Blackhurst introduces an locked room mystery when Babette is found murdered in her bedroom which adds to the interest which by then for me was waning but the solution to this didn't seem overly inspired, although most locked room mysteries seem obvious when you know how it was done.

This is a lighthearted read despite the subject matter. Easy to read writing style and an interesting setting. Much more a character and relationship driven plot than its predecessors scams and cons that felt a bit contrived, with an ending that will allow for a follow up, otherwise the previous two novels will just be left hanging with no real ultimate conclusion.

This is the second book in the series featuring formerly estranged half-sisters, Tess and Sarah, who make their respective livings on opposing sides of the law: Tess works for the police as a DS, while Sarah is an accomplished con artist. The story in "Smoke and Murders" picks up much where it left off in book one, "Three Card Murder" and, as such, this really doesn't work as a standalone.

When compared with "Three Card Murder", this sequel concentrates far more on the relationship between the two half-sisters (plus the introduction of some other familial elements), which pleased me, because this was a really positive aspect of book one. Another positive feature is the handling of the police sections this time around, which aren't as procedurally dull as they had a tendency to be in the first book.

Against these clear positives this follow-up does have a couple of potential downsides though. Firstly, as I have mentioned, any readers coming directly to this without having previously read "Three Card Murder" will find themselves at a disadvantage, as you really need some awareness of the background story. Secondly, the murder mystery element in "Smoke and Murders" is not as engaging as it was in the previous novel. That isn't to say that it is poor, by any means, because that isn't the case - but it does suffer a little from playing second fiddle to the increased focus on the relationship between Tess and Sarah.

As with "Three Card Murder", there are some elements of the plot development that stretch credulity a touch, but as I do enjoy Jenny Blackhurst's writing style and storytelling abilities, I was more than willing to grant her the necessary leeway. I won't divulge any spoilers that may impair your enjoyment, but suffice to say, that the author does leave the door very much open to a further book in this series - and I have no doubt that I will be back to read it.

Znacie twórczość Jenny Blackhust?
"Nie ma dymu bez morderstwa" to moje pierwsze spotkanie z twórczością autorki i przyznam szczerze, że jestem nim zaintrygowana i zafascynowana.
Ta powieść to nie tylko kryminalna zagadka.
To także zawiłe relacje rodzinne, która chociaż wychodzą na pierwszy plan, to zupełnie nie umniejszają całości. Ja mam wręcz wrażenie, że idealnie ją dopełniły i nadały jeszcze większego wydźwięku.

Powieść zaczyna się od obchodów święta Guya Fawkesa.
Jest głośno, jest tłocznie, jest radośnie.
Do czasu...
Bowiem, gdy z jednej z płonących kukieł, wypada głowa lokalnego radnego, wokół zaczyna siać się panika i pojawia się chaos.
Podejrzaną o zabójstwo szybko staje się Lily Dowse.
Nic dziwnego. Wszak na ostatnim spotkaniu Rady Okręgów, kobieta mu groziła...

W sprawę rozwikłania zagadki morderstwa angażuje się znana policjantką Tess Fox, a wraz z nią jej przyrodnia siostra Sarah.
Obie pragną doprowadzić sprawę do końca i sprawić, by tego, kto dokonał tak okrutnej zbrodni, dosięgnęła sprawiedliwość.
Jednak czy im się to uda?
Czy policjantką stojąca na straży prawa i kobieta, która notorycznie to prawo łamie tworzą idealny duet?

"Nie ma dymu bez morderstwa" to książka, którą czyta się błyskawicznie. Chociaż sprawa kryminalna szybko schodzi na boczny tor, rozwijające się relacje rodzinne, to rekompensują.
Autorka genialnie prowadzi fabułę.
Z jednej strony mamy morderstwo z drugiej zawiłe losy głównych bohaterek. Losy naznaczone bólem, niepewnością i nieufnością.
Akcja powoli przyspiesza, a to również przyspiesza bicie serca.
Niezaprzeczalnie, przysłowiową wisienka na torcie jest ostatnia scena, która wzbudza najwięcej emocji. I za tę scenę, ode mnie jedna gwiazdka więcej 😁

After the way the first book ended, I was so beyond excited to read this one and be back in this world! But unfortunately, I really struggled to focus and enjoy this book. While the plot is similar in ways to the first one, I really missed that element of impossibility and the lack of clues that the first book encompassed so well. I did like the small town setting and seeing more of the sisters' relationship, but the actual cases they were solving were just not as gripping for me. This book definitely felt like the middle book, setting up for the next one in the series. There were so many characters introduced in this book that I simply could not keep track and couldn't figure out how they linked and what they had to do with the storyline.

This book definitely felt more like a cosy mystery rather than a fast paced thriller which definitely hindered my enjoyment of this book. I am glad we got to see more about the girls' backstory, their family and how it all led them to where they are now. Even with the audiobook (which was incredible) I can't remember a lot of the plot except the ending. Everything did come together in the end and it made sense, but once again in true fashion we were left on a cliffhanger, except this one I was not expecting at all! I am very intrigued to see what happens next, although I will have to reread this one before then and I am interested to see if my opinion changes.

However, I do think that the first book should have been left as a standalone as it is incredible on its own and this one isn't necessary to read after it. But because I am already attached to these characters and heavily invested in their story, I will definitely be reading the third one as I feel that one will be incredible! Just a gut feeling ₊˚⊹♡

Niestety książka mnie zawiodła.
Po pierwsze pojawiło się tu za dużo postaci,wątków i sytuacji,które były za bardzo opisane,przez co mam wrażenie,że spowalniały dojście do rozwiązań pewnych wątków,których pojawiło się dużo i nie zostały one do końca wyjaśnione np.Julia w sumie to tajemnicza postać,o której nikt nic nie wie jedne co,że jest morderczynią oraz bardzo dobrze manipuluje ludźmi,tak naprawdę jak miała pamiętać,że Frank to jej ojciec,kiedy w sumie nie było opisane czy za dzieciaka miała z nim jakieś interakcje lub go wgl pozanła????po czym Lily twierdzi,że to napewno córka Franka,a co jeśli nie było drugiej córki i była tylko Sarah?? wydaje mi się,że ten wątek i jej osoba była dosyć płytko napisana oraz nie do końca było wiadome skąd się wzieła(Lily podobno sprowadziła ją z powrotem).Nie można było także potwierdzić jej tożsamości na policji więc nikt nie wie kim tak naprawdę jest Julia.
2.Osoba która zabiła Ruperta pojawia się o niej wzmianka dopiero jakoś na końcu książki tak samo o tych misiach.Nie ma żadnego naprowadzenia na inny motyw niż zdrady Ruperta albo L.
3.Dużo faktów z początku książki zostaje jakby zapomnianych lub zignorowanych w dalszym biegu wydarzeń,mam wrażenie,że te stworzenia na obchody dnia Guya Fawkesa na początku są bardzo podkreślane przez autorkę i ogl tam szukają zabójcy lub jakiegoś powiązania a na końcu okazuje się ,że wgl nie są z niczym powiązane lub to,że Tess szuka chłopaka czy ktoś jej podoba ten wątek wgl zostaje jakby wyparty z reszty opowieści.
Podsumowanie
Nie podobało mi się jak ta książka jest sformułowana pod względem merytorycznym oraz treści,za dużo wątków i opisów ktore jak sie okazuje nic nie wnoszą.
Czytanie tego jest monotone i nudne a zakończenie. nie ma totalnie sensu i jest randomowe i no dziwne…..

Całe miasteczko zebrało się, aby świętować Dzień Guya Fawkesa. Miało być spektakularne widowisko… i w sumie było!

Bo z płonącej kukły znanego polityka wytoczyła się zwęglona głowa… lokalnego radnego.

Tę zagadkę mają rozwiązać Tess – policjantka oraz Sarah, zawodowa oszustka.

Dziewczyny są przyrodnimi siostrami, które pochodzą z zupełnie różnych światów. Co może się wydarzyć, kiedy zaczną ze sobą współpracować?

Na pierwszy rzut oka mogłoby się wydawać, że głównym wątkiem będzie śledztwo w sprawie zbrodni. Jednak autorka postawiła przede wszystkim na relacje rodzinne – a te bywają tu wyjątkowo skomplikowane.

Dramaty rodzinne momentami były dość pokręcone i łatwo było się w nich pogubić. Zwłaszcza na samym początku.

Nie ma tu postaci idealnych. To bohaterowie pełni wad, często uciekający od odpowiedzialności za własne czyny. Ich decyzje bywały trudne do zrozumienia i nie zawsze budziły sympatię.

Szkoda, że wątek kryminalny zszedł na dalszy plan, bo właśnie on mógłby dodać historii więcej dynamiki i napięcia. Zdarzało się, że traciłam zainteresowanie, a moja uwaga wracała dopiero wtedy, gdy śledztwo znowu nabierało tempa.
A najbardziej podobały mi się przesłuchania!

Jak to zwykle bywa – autorka najlepszą akcję zostawiła na koniec. Zwroty akcji, nowe fakty i kolejne zawirowania rodzinne sprawiły, że napięcie i moje zaciekawienie znacząco wzrosły.
I ta scena na samym końcu…

Miło spędziłam czas przy tej historii, ale czegoś mi w niej zabrakło. Za dużo dramatów, za mało dusznej i napiętej atmosfery.

First off, this is a great title – not just clever wordplay but also specifically referencing the opening plot of the book and one of the key ‘impossible’ crimes contained in the novel. Like the ‘Golden Age’ crime novels this series is clearly founded on (referenced more particularly in the first book Three Card Murder) there are quite a number of puzzles to figure out. So far, so classic crime, and that keeps me happy!

Where Smoke and Murders stumbles a little for me is that there is too little time spent on the murders and too much on the relationships in the book. It is very definitely a continuation of the first book in the series and developing the characters is probably necessary in the overall story arc but the relationships and interactions often didn’t feel entirely genuine to me, particularly when taken in context of the characters’ shared histories (again, contained in the first novel…)

Having said that, Smoke and Murders is still an enjoyable modern (bordering on the cosy) crime novel, with its feet firmly planted in the Golden Age. And like the first book in the series, there are plenty of traditional crime novel tropes, and plenty of clues throughout the book that drew me in and made me want to work out the solutions before the characters did. I managed it a couple of times, and that keeps me happy too!

W Lewes co roku obchodzony jest Dzień Guya Fawkesa, gdzie zwykle pali się kukły znanych osób. Tym razem w kukle umieszczono ciało miejscowego polityka. Nikt nie wie, jak ono się tam znalazło, a główną podejrzaną staje się Lily Dowse - tajemnicza kobieta wśród miejscowych uchodzi za wróżkę i na dodatek kilka dni wcześniej groziła publicznie radnemu. Podczas przesłuchania chce rozmawiać tylko z jedną policjantką, Tess Fox. Szybko się okazuje, że kobieta jest matką przyrodniej siostry Tess, od lat uznawaną za zmarłą. Gdy w miasteczku dochodzi do kolejnych dziwnych zbiegów okoliczności, policjantka musi wykorzystać kryminalne koneksje swojej rodziny, aby odkryć prawdę.
To moja druga książka tej autorki, ale muszę przyznać, że naprawdę przypadła mi do gustu. Tutaj dostajemy trochę więcej skompilowanych relacji rodzinnych, a w tle majaczy się zbrodnia prawie idealna.
Autorka w ciekawy sposób przedstawia świetnie zaplanowaną intrygę i oddaje klimat małego miasteczka, w którym panuje powszechna zmowa milczenia. Można powiedzieć, że nikt tu nie jest bez winy, bez względu na wszystko kryjąc siebie nawzajem.
Mimo, że Tess Fox jest córką przestępcy i oszusta, to drzemie w niej dusza prawdziwego śledczego. Od samego początku angażuje się w śledztwo, z małą pomocą przyrodniej siostry, łącząc wszystkie kropki w logiczną całość. Choć jedna stoi po stronie prawa, a druga wręcz przeciwnie, to tworzą naprawdę zgrany duet.
Szczerze, mam nadzieję na kontynuację tej książki. Pochłonęłam ją w jeden dzień i ciągle mi mało.

Czy lubisz upały? Ja… uwielbiam. To totalnie moje klimaty! Choć akcja tej książki rozgrywa się późną jesienią (której szczerze nie znoszę 😅), to i tak poznając tę historię, miałam wrażenie, że temperatura wokół mnie niebezpiecznie rośnie.
Od pierwszych stron zalewa czytelnika atmosfera duszności i napięcia. Wszystko zaczyna się od ognia, od płomieni trawiących kukłę, z której nagle wypada zwęglona głowa miejscowego radnego. Makabryczny początek… a to dopiero rozgrzewka. Ogień w tej historii to nie tylko żywioł niszczący, ale i metafora… płoną sekrety, płoną kłamstwa, płoną emocje. To taki ogień, który nie daje ciepła, tylko odbiera tlen.

Choć mogłoby się wydawać, że to właśnie śledztwo powinno grać tu pierwsze skrzypce, to w praktyce największe napięcie budują relacje rodzinne i to one wychodzą na pierwszy plan. Dziwne, pełne tajemnic i przemilczeń, żalu, momentami bardziej duszące niż sam dym pożaru. To nie są proste więzi…

„Nie ma dymu bez morderstwa” to książka, która nie daje łatwych odpowiedzi, nie serwuje akcji jak w hollywoodzkim thrillerze, ale w zamian oferuje coś innego: powolne zagłębianie się w różne zależności, podsycanie napięcia i to charakterystyczne uczucie, że jeszcze chwila, a płomienie ogarną wszystko. I choć zabrakło mi trochę intensywności w samej intrydze, to i tak z przyjemnością dałam się porwać tej opowieści. To jedna z tych historii, które sprawiają, że zapominasz o rzeczywistości i toniesz w dusznej, mrocznej atmosferze. A czasem właśnie tego w literaturze potrzebuję.

But will this puzzling mystery prove beyond even their talents?

This book picks up where the first book, Three Card Murder, ended. There are some descriptions of what happened in the first book. Tess was desperate to investigate how Councillor Rupert Millington's head had ended up in an effigy of Donald Trump. But Tess didn't get the DI's job, so she was given minimalist tasks by her new boss. This is a cleverly written locked-room murder mystery. Who would have thought a con artist and a detective would work well together, even though they are half-sisters? I also liked Lily, what a character and a bit of a slippery fish she is. I'm looking forward to seeing how events unfold in the next book.

Jenny Blackhurst znam ze świetnych thrillerów psychologicznych, w których autorka skupiała się przede wszystkim na rozterkach bohaterek. Ich atmosfera za każdym razem była duszna, pełna tajemnic i niedopowiedzeń.

Z kolei Nie ma dymu bez morderstwa to druga część z cyklu “Niemożliwe zbrodnie”. To klasyczny kryminał, w którym jesteśmy świadkami śledztwa prowadzonego przez nietypowy duet.

Przyznam, że nie czytałam pierwszej części, ale Jenny Blackhurst dobrze wprowadza w wydarzenia i robi to w taki sposób, że dobrze poznajemy historię Sarah, Julii i Tess.

Zbrodnia, o której mowa w książce, jest pozornie niemożliwa do popełnienia. Jenny Blackhurst umiejętnie podsuwa czytelnikom kolejne tropy. Prezentuje nam mieszkańców miasteczka, ich relacje, kolejno odkrywamy ich tajemnice. Okazuje się, że każdy mieszkaniec mógł mieć motyw, a jednocześnie nie miał sposobności, by zabić Ruperta.

Co ciekawe: dla zagadki kryminalnej okazują się dość istotne koligacje rodzinne Sarah i Tess, a ich relacje doskonale ubarwiają powieść. Bo oto z jednej strony mamy spryt i inteligencję zawodowej oszustki, z drugiej zaś typową pracę policyjną. Dzięki takiemu zestawieniu jest ciekawie, oryginalnie, ale i nieraz naprawdę zabawnie.

Doskonale mi się czytało tę książkę. Wkręciłam się w niemożliwą do rozwiązania intrygę kryminalną, relacje mieszkańców i samych głównych bohaterek. A zakończenie - niezwykle zaskakujące (chyba kolejna niemożliwa do rozwiązania zagadka) - sprawia, że niecierpliwie czekam na kontynuację. Polecam miłośnikom autorki i nietypowych zagadek kryminalnych!

„Nie ma dymu bez morderstwa” to druga książka z serii opowiadającej o detektyw Tess Fox i jej siostrze-oszustce, Sarah, i kontynuuje historię dokładnie tam, gdzie skończyła się pierwsza część.
Nie czytałam pierwszej części i na początku byłam nieco zdezorientowana co do relacji między Tess, Sarah i Julią oraz tego, co wydarzyło się wcześniej. Wszystko zostaje ostatecznie wyjaśnione wystarczająco szczegółowo. Chociaż nie jest to absolutnie konieczne, aby znać „Do trzech razy śmierć”, to polecam czytać je po kolei.
Dzień Guya Fawkesa (mieszkając w UK, kilkukrotnie brałam udział w obchodach, więc wiem jak ważne jest to święto dla Anglików) w Lewes przejdzie do historii, a to za sprawą przeznaczonej na spalenie kukły Trumpa i ukrytego w nim ciała. Tess za wszelką cenę próbuje zagłębić się w życie ofiary, aby znaleźć jego zabójcę.
Niezwykle interesujące są zagmatwane relacje rodzinne między czterema kobietami: Tess, Sarah, Julie i Lily. Totalnie porwała mnie jednak relacja Tess i Sarah, które stoją po przeciwnych stronach prawa. Dynamika między nimi jest niezwykle zabawna i wyważona. Ich kontrastujące, a zarazem uzupełniające się umiejętności tworzą świetny duet śledczy.
To mocny, od samego początku kryminał, thriller psychologiczny i dramat w jednym. Choć wątek kryminalny nie gra tu pierwszych skrzypiec, to nie zawodzi i buduje napięcie. Zakończenie jest zaskakujące i przebieram nóżkami, aż pojawi się kolejna część z udziałem sióstr!

The Lewes Bonfire event is huge every year but certain people, including Councillor Rupert Millington, want it cancelled, he is up against some stiff opposition and is ruffling many feathers so when the burnt remains of the councillor are discovered inside a burning effigy the town are shocked, but not surprised as he wasn't a very likeable person but who is responsible? Detective Tess Fox and her sister, con artist Sarah Jacobs are certain they can crack the case, but things may not be quite that straightforward for them.

Smoke and Murders is the second in this series and starts off where Three Card Murder ended so, if you're new to this series, it's best to start off with book one first so you can I understand the context of the stories and the background of the characters. This is another locked room mystery, full of twists and turns, as before, and I loved seeing the growing bond between the two sisters, with the addition of Lily, their mum, who was quite a character. It's an intriguing storyline with some rather dubious characters and kept me second guessing throughout who could be responsible, another great read with another great cliffhanger which has left me looking forward to book three!

DS Tess Fox and her con artist sister are investigating an impossible crime, where the remains of a local councillor are found inside a burning effigy at the annual bonfire event. Soon more impossible crimes come to light. Will the sisters be able to use their skills to understand this mystery?

This is the second book in this series following on from Three Card Murder, which I really enjoyed. This was another excellent addition to the series! Although this can be read as a standalone, it is probably best to read the first one prior, to get an understanding of the characters and their relationships. The storyline is full of puzzling mystery, humour and fun. What I really love about this series, however, are the characters. I especially love the relationship between Tess and sister Sarah, enjoying their easy banter and amusing situations they get involved in.

This one took a bit longer for me to get into than the first but by the half way point I was hooked and stayed up way too late to carry on reading. There were a few twists a long the way and the cliff hanger ending has left me desperate to read the next one in the series! I hope it doesn’t take too long to arrive. 4.5 stars rounded up to 5. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this copy in return for an honest review.

Dwie z nich to przestępczynie, trzecia to policjantka, która je ściga.
Tess postanawia zaryzykować całą swoją karierę policyjną dla Sarah - siostry, która jest oszustką, a której matka być może dalej żyje.
Julia, odpowiedzialna za morderstwo jest w tym momencie jednym z najbardziej poszukiwanych przez Tess przestępców, ale jednocześnie to ona jako jedyna ma pojęcie, gdzie Sarah może znaleźć swoją matkę.
Czy ta relacja może być jeszcze bardziej skomplikowana?
Okazuje się, że tak, bo oto Sarah obiecuję postawić Julię przed oblicze Tess, jak tylko ta doprowadzi ją do matki.
I nagle cała sytuacja znów staje na głowie, ponieważ matka, która do tej pory była uważana za zmarłą, sama stawia się na komisariacie i chce spotkania z Tess, aby oczyścić się z podejrzeń, które na nią właśnie padły.

„Nie ma dymu bez morderstwa” okazało się, moim zdaniem, słabszym tomem niż pierwsza część serii. Autorka tym razem nieco przekombinowała z fabułą – zamiast trzymającego w napięciu thrillera, otrzymaliśmy historię, w której na pierwszy plan wysunęły się skomplikowane relacje rodzinne. Niestety, ten wątek zdominował całą opowieść, przez co klimat kryminału czy dreszczowca został przyćmiony i gdzieś po drodze zagubił się główny zamysł gatunkowy.

Trzy siostry — jedna jest policjantką, druga oszustką, trzecia morderczynią. Wszystkie poróżniła dramatyczna przeszłość, która w przyszłości na nowo połączyła ich losy. Tess Fox wstąpiła do policji po tym, jak uratowała życie przyrodniej siostry Sary. Ojciec, mający miano największego oszusta, nie znał tajemnicy córek, nie potrafił zaakceptować, że Tess chce iść inną drogą. To doprowadziło, że Sarah współpracowała w przestępczej działalności Franka, a Tess stała się pariasem. Teraz Frank nie żyje, a za jego śmiercią stoi Julie, trzecia siostra. Julie i Sarah podróżują po świecie, by odnaleźć uznawaną za zmarłą matkę, ale ta odnajduje się sama. Jest podejrzaną o zabójstwo, ale chce złożyć wyjaśnienia jedynie Tess.

Jest to drugi tom serii i druga powieść detektywistyczna, która wyszła spod pióra autorki specjalizującej się dotychczas w thrillerach psychologicznych. Według mnie druga część skomplikowanych losów sióstr jest równie udana co pierwsza. Historia była intrygująca, dynamiczna i zmuszała do próby samodzielnego rozwikłania zagadki. To akurat było prawie niemożliwe, ale miło było pogłówkować. Podobał mi się sposób naszkicowania postaci, ukazanie ich trudnych rodzinnych relacji. Całości dopełniał dobry styl. Z niecierpliwością czekam na kolejne losy sióstr.

We are back with the two sisters Tess (police officer) and Sarah (con artist) from the previous book. I don't think you will get much out of this book if you don't read the previous book first. There are so many references which you won't understand otherwise.

Whilst I thoroughly enjoyed the first book, even though a lot of it was far fetched, I found this one a little harder to get into. I also found it too incredible how much time Sarah spent with her sister Tess whilst she was investigating an official police matter. There was the humour which was good and the banter between the sisters was also great fun. Some of the other characters read like they were caricatures and I got Midsomer Murder vibes more than once.

It was quite the tangled web that was woven between the characters in the village and more than once I got confused who was who, but then that seemed to be the order of the day with this story. It was this that made me decide whilst reading this book that I would not read a follow on, if there was to be one. Then I got to the last page and that all changed. What a cliff hanger is all I am going to say... I need book 3!

Full disclosure Smoke And Murders is the follow-up book to The Three Card Murder and I read this one without reading the first book. I managed pretty well, and you could technically read this as a standalone, but I would recommend reading the first book in the series for context. I still enjoyed it, though, and it provided all the cosy crime vibes I was looking for.

When a well-known councillor ends up meeting a sinister end with his head being found in a burning effigy of Donald trump, Detective Tess Fox is determined to get to the bottom of his murder, Lewes is famous for its bonfire events, but this one has taken a turn for the macabre. If anyone can solve this mystery, it will be Tess and her con artist sister Sarah Jacobs, who are known to make a formidable team but with obstacles in their way, such as Tess's uncooperative boss and a complex family dynamic can they solve whodunit?

This is a great detective story with lots of twists and turns. I loved the relationship between Tess and Sarah, who are both incredibly likeable as individuals, but also, their camaraderie is just so warm and wholesome.
When it came to the murder itself, I did have to suspend belief a little bit and it didn't feel as well fleshed out as the relationship between the sisters but it was still a fun time and that ending had me gasping out loud.
Overall, I'm glad I read this one. I do think I would have benefited from reading the first book before I picked this one up, but I will definitely continue on with the series. I love a cosy whodunit and this one is perfect for this time of year.

Smoke and Murders is the second book in the Impossible Crimes series by J.L. Blackhurst and we are back with Detective Tess Fox and her sister Sarah Jacobs who are once again caught in the middle of some mysterious investigations. When the charred body of Rupert Millington are found during bonfire celebrations, they must find out not only the who and the why but also how his body ended up in the bonfire without anyone noticing. Added to this Sarah is still searching for her mother aided by the person responsible for killing her father.
Having been passed over for promotion Tess finds herself doing a lot of the basic work on the investigation as her new boss takes great pleasure in overlooking her abilities. He also is not keen on her working with Sarah to solve the case. Having taken a lot of flack for letting a murder suspect escape she is keen to solve the case and find her mother so that as per the agreement with Sarah, she can finally arrest them.
The dynamic between Tess and Sarah is fun to explore as although on the surface they are like chalk and cheese they do bounce off each other perfectly and you can see that they do care for each other and really want to solve the case. I think that sometimes Tess envies Sarah and the freedom she has to ignore the rules that Tess has to live by. They do have the added dynamic now of the missing mother and this throws up quite a few questions and dilemma’s especially as she somehow ends up in the middle of the investigation as one of the main suspects.
There were quite a few twists and turns that had you second guessing the clues that were left along the way. There is a definite cosy crime feel to this series that will appeal to many people and J.L. Blackhurst has created characters that are warm and funny and wholly relatable. What I did love about this book was that whilst the start of the book was a bit of a shock, the ending was even more unexpected and has left me ready for the next in the series as I think that Tess and Sarah could be in for an interesting time both personally and professionally and if nothing else family life is never going to be dull.

Jestem miłośniczką lekkich kryminałów, gdzie główną rolę grają tajemnice, zaskakujące zwroty akcji, a nie opisy brutalnych zbrodni. Taka właśnie jest ta książka i choć morderstwo jest dość finezyjne, to sama książka dostarcza nam mnóstwa radości z odkrywania krok po kroku kto jest mordercą.
Czyta się ją błyskawicznie, ja w zasadzie przeczytałam ją w 3 dni, a były one wypełnione mnóstwem innych aktywności. Wchodzimy tu w świat pełen sekretów, intryg i napięcia. Pomimo, że książka ma dość lekki klimat (zapewniają go między innymi humorystyczne dialogi),to jednak człowiek nie może się od niej oderwać.
Myślę, że tym co ją wyróżnia są bohaterki. Sarah, choć zajmuje się przestępczym fachem zawsze potrafi pomóc w śledztwie i zaskoczyć swoim podejściem. Mam wrażenie, że czasem jest lepsza niż śledczy. Tess z kolei musi połączyć dwa światy, przez co jej droga wcale nie jest prosta. Razem tworzą świetną ekipę.
Samo zakończenie natomiast było tak zaskakujące, że nie mogę się doczekać na kolejną część, bo tego chyba się nikt nie spodziewał.
Ja już wiem, że Jenny Blackhurst wskakuje na moją listę autorek, po które będę sięgać w ciemno.

Już od pierwszych stron dynamiczna akcja wciąga czytelnika, zmuszając go do uważnego śledzenia rozwoju wydarzeń. Blackhurst nie ogranicza się jednak do samej zagadki kryminalnej, w fabułę umiejętnie wplata wiele pobocznych wątków, które okazują się nie mniej istotne od głównej linii śledztwa. Dzięki temu powieść zyskuje wielowymiarowość - to nie tylko historia o morderstwie, ale i opowieść o ludziach, ich relacjach i skomplikowanych emocjach.

Na szczególną uwagę zasługuje kreacja postaci, które są niejednoznaczne, złożone i wiarygodne. Akcja nie pędzi w zawrotnym tempie, jest niespiesznie i rozważnie poprowadzona. Zabieg ten pozwala na stopniowe narastanie napięcia, dając przestrzeń na refleksję. Każdy kolejny rozdział przynosi nowe tropy, potęgując naszą ciekawość.

A tightly woven mystery full of clever twists and sharp humour.

The dynamic between Tess and Sarah is so fun and balanced. Their contrasting yet complementary skills make for a great investigative duo, The mystery itself is satisfying, but the stories truly shine with the characters.

There is a fab locked-room murder that occurs. The pacing is perfect. The climax, featuring a jaw-dropping revelation, leaves readers eagerly anticipating the next instalment.

With its witty dialogue, well-developed characters, and a plot that keeps you guessing, Smoke and Murders is a standout cosy mystery. It's a must-read for fans of the genre, and it certainly leaves you curious about the enigmatic social engineer and the explosive twist at the end. I can't wait to see where Tess and Sarah's adventures lead next!

Following on from book one, this one goes into Lily and Julia's background a bit more. I like how Jenny describes their relationship, how close knit Sarah is with Wes and her dad's team - now her team. Still a con artist but she seems to have a change of heart as such, working closely with her sister Tess, finding clues, thinking outside the box and a lot of sleuthing!

Another death happens very early on and Tess and Sarah are on a mission to find clues, it's a fast paced read, full of twists and more locked room deaths. Great writing, interesting characters and I wasn't sure how it was going to end as it kept me guessing until the last chapter or so!

I also like the Jonathan Creek aspect to this series, how the deaths are uncovered then explained, very clever!

Everyone is linked somehow when it came to the murders but the "how" and "why" is Tess and Sarah's mystery to solve.
