I have realised I read the next book in the series before this one. As they work as stand-alones, this isn't a problem.

Just like the other books there is plenty of action here. Just like the other books, the language would be difficult for a new reader at times. In my opinion they would work better if read to a new reader than the new reader attempting them themselves. I can see them getting frustrated with the complexity of the words.

I read this book to my four-year-old and we both thoroughly enjoyed it. The plot was simple, easy enough for him to follow despite reading it over a couple of weeks. My son enjoyed the antics of the penguin crew in their battle to save their ship, despite the threat of giant squid. The characters were engaging and there was a subtle humour running through it, some of which appeals to adults without being inappropriate for children. On a deeper level, it promotes the idea of team work, making best use of your strengths and discipline. Finally, how can you not like a book that has the villain Dark Wader lurking in the background with his Death Starfish?
