I really appreciated the nice range of women included in this Michigan collection. While all of these women made some mark while they were young, Majher includes both historical and contemporary figures and she clearly tried to include a variety of women of color. There were athletes, entertainers, soldiers, and everyday heroes. I was a little disappointed that she didn't manage to include any Michigan girls with Middle Eastern roots.

A great book to recommend to pre-teen girls - short biographies of girls in Michigan who accomplished something unique before they turned 20. I had never heard of most of these women and it was fascinating - a variety of accomplishments by an amazing group of women.

Patricia Majher is a former editor of Michigan History magazine and a museum professional who has held positions at institutions including The Henry Ford and Mackinac State Historic Parks. Her previous books include Ladies of the Lights: Michigan Women in the U.S. Lighthouse Service and Great Girls in Michigan History (Wayne State University Press, 2015).
