A whole book on using Google? I mean, come on now … who DOESN'T know how to use the Google search engine?

This reviewer asked that question (to himself) upon seeing the book. And this reviewer reluctantly admitted to himself “uh, me, I guess” after finishing the book.

It turns out that Google is like so many other things … simple on the surface, and as complex as you can handle under the hood. This book explains concepts like “effective search planning”, “boolean logic”, “narrowing searches to certain sites / file types”, and more. Yes, you can type in and get thousands of hits, or you can type in to narrow down the list of results. (Plus, you will learn why the word “AND” needs to be capitalized, but “singing” can be in upper, lower, or mixed case.)

The book is well illustrated, with screen images of search results generously interspersed throughout the book. One might make the case that the large screen images take up too much space; however, if they were smaller, they would probably be unreadable. As it is, the “Advanced Search Options” screen reproductions are difficult to read. (Perhaps they would be more effective on glossy paper – but on the downside, it would certainly raise the cost of the book.)

Ignore your preconceived notions; this book is a good investment of your time and funds.

RATING: 4.5 stars, rounding up to 5 stars.

The book is popular with all levels, beginning and up through advanced. With 190 pages,it covers a lot, from techniques and tips, to the best specialized sites. Family history, astronomy, and art searches are used for examples. The new Hummingbird (Google engine) is amazing and uses over 200 secret factors that search for what you obviously want, in fractions of a second. And the Advanced Search window allows greater control. Illustrations show how this is possible. Image searches, Scholar.Google searches, Book.Google searches and more make this book a valuable resource. It is also entertaining to read. I highly recommend this book.
