Japanese Ink Lessons in Suiboku Technique teaches beginners the fundamental techniques of suiboku , a form of Japanese ink painting.

Suiboku is considered to be a type of Japanese painting known as sumi-e. It adds water to emphasize the shading of black into gray in one brush-stroke. With origins in China and a spiritual basis in Zen Buddhism, this form of brush painting--expressing nature's colors through shades of black ink monochrome--has been enjoyed throughout the centuries in Japan as a hobby for the amateur.

First published in 1959 this little book contains much information for a beginner. There may be more recent books and online courses but I will keep this book beside me and treasure it. Now to get practicing! 🖌

Although originally published in 1959, the material is still relevant, and with the addition of sites like YouTube, the techniques are better understood with the ability to watch them in action. The book guides the aspiring artist through a step by step progression of the essential techniques needed in order to paint within this style.
