Reveries of an Heir

Rate this book
Born with absolute power, there is nothing Saekonari Raajali wants more than to make her mother proud. Sae will be the perfect Heir, an exemplary Empress, and a good daughter. Nothing had ever shaken her faith or resolve until the night she finds her father dead. With all the universe watching, the only way forward is predesigned and narrow. It wouldn’t be right to ask for more.

Zarek Deutreax Trace makes her want more.

In her darkest hours, he was there. Where others doubt her, he sees only strength. So, when his memories of her are taken and scattered to the stars, Sae does the unthinkable. Absconding to the outer universe, she shatters interstellar law and, worst of all, disobeys her mother in the process.

New friends, worlds, and questions will appear that an Heir should never seek out. Getting involved will mean defying expectations she has only ever wanted to meet. Their pasts threaten everything she’s ever held sacred but it is their choices; made under the most impossible of circumstances; that will send ripples across spacetime.

Now determined to forge her own path…

Just as the outer universe gains an invaluable ally…

The Empress, Her Eternal Majesty, will not be pleased.

A rich adventure through the universe with creative worlds to explore! I got my hands on an ARC copy and have the privilege of checking this out before the official release.

Saekonari (or "Sae"), raised to be a perfect and obedient heir by her mother, ends up defying her mother to adventure across the outer universe, where her mother cannot see or follow her. She has a rude awakening as she learns the worlds outside of her country's purview don't behave in the ways her controlled education would have her believe. Outside the utopia of her home system, she comes face-to-face with the worst of the universe: corruption, inequality, slavery, murder, and so much more.

Zarek is her polar opposite, raised in a particularly brutal area in the outer universe and steeped in deadly work, and it seems like he wouldn't be able to get along with someone as privileged as Sae. Nevertheless, Sae and him end up aligning in many ways, including a very cute scene involving slime mold (just trust me on this one XD). He ends up being the final push she needed to spread her wings in the outer universe, away from her mother, and helps her grow as a person along the way.

Though it's no utopia, the outer universe isn't all bad--Sae ends up making new friends and discovering new ways of thinking along the way. She discovers her own strength, and the capacity she has to help others. Independent of her mother's influence, she makes her own connections with major players in the outer universe.

What I found especially intriguing was the lack of clear answers for Sae. She is a god-like figure with the kind of powers that gives her advantages over many people, and the desire to do good and spread mercy, but even she can't solve all problems all the time... especially if people DON'T want her to solve what she considers a problem. There's a particular festival scene that gave me shivers and raised questions in myself about where one draws the line in respecting other cultures versus intervening in what seems like needless cruelty.

In general, there's a fascinating variety of cultures and species that populate the universe. Since Sae is traveling across various worlds, we get a taste of plenty of them, all with different cultural values, governing structures, and conventions. There's also some sexual/gender diversity among the aliens, not all of them subscribing to human conventional gender dichotomies. I was personally happy to see some general sexuality diversity among the main crew with Sae as well. I won't spoil anything, but I had a ship early on that ended up paying dividends by the end ;).

Though the book reaches a good stopping point, there are still plenty of questions unanswered. I'm curious to see how her relationship with her mother might develop in the next book, and for potential answers to discrepancies raised in the history of her family/species. If you're interested in a world-hopping space adventure with grit, romance, and philosophical questions on the nature of utopia and what we can impose on others along the way, give this a read!

When I heard that this was an intergalactic sci fi romance, I was immediately sold on the premise. This world is extremely imaginative and I was sucked into the plot once the quest began.

I love how ambitious the worldbuilding is, but I think it was perhaps a bit too wide and would have been more successful with a more narrow, fully fleshed out focus. I also would have loved to see more development of the relationship between our main characters, Sae and Zarek, particulary in the beginning.

There is potential for a found family feel to this trilogy, which is exciting, but that did not come to fruition in this book. I didn't enjoy Esme (a side character) at all and felt like the conflicts involving her were forced. She came off extremely 2D, which was disappointing, because her sister, Amie, was far more developed.

This story has a lot of potential and I hope it continues to grow in strength with more detailed editing in future installments of the trilogy.

Overall, a promising debut for dedicated lovers of romantasy who are interested in exploring the sci fi genre!

Thank you to the author for the ARC!

I received this book as an arc in exchange for an honest review.

This book was giving Empire of Storms but on steroids. Basically just a friend group traveling between planets and universes tracking down a character’s lost memories. There was very little chill or downtime in this book, which made it a little chaotic and hard to follow at times. If you love an action packed book, this might be for you. Unfortunately, it wasn’t for me. I did love the interactions between Sae and Zarek. I appreciated the twists in here too although they felt out of place at times. Esme also annoyed the sh*t out of me with her sporadic and unnecessary outbursts.

I won’t be continuing the series (I think it’s going to be a trilogy), but I hope you love this book more than I did because no one reads the same book

I received this book an as arc read and I just want to thank the author for the chance to read it.

The story itself has great potential to it, but I found myself confused on some of the things happening just because there was a lot of information and a lot of names being thrown at me!

It was cool that she meet him at a young age and she kinda became obsessed with him but of course her mother wasn’t about to let that happen so she stole her letters. Then they go off on an adventure to find his lost memories and along the way they run into people from his past.

Like I said just a lot of information and it was confusing for me to keep track! Thank you again for the opportunity!

So… I wrote a book. 💫

Saekonari Raajali was raised to be the perfect Heir. But one night changes everything and suddenly she’s breaking rules, asking questions she’s not supposed to and going head to head with her mother (the Empress 👀).

There are new worlds, new friends and some choices that are going to change everything.
