When a heart is in pieces, can it still be broken?

Quiet, contemplative Esther is in love. It’s an all-encompassing love that sweeps her off her feet but also leaves her dangling with nothing to hold onto. It’s thrilling, unlike anything she’s ever felt before, and she gives her whole heart to this marriage, to this willful, passionate man.

Things change when she becomes a m

5 STARS! Lauren Taylor knows exactly what her readers need and I for one NEEDED this novella! After reading (and loving) all four books in The Woodlands Series, I found I did have some lingering questions that are beautifully answered in The Willful. Lauren takes us back to the time of Rosa's birth and early years and gives us a glimpse into the life and love of Rosa's parents Esther and Pelo. Misperceptions abound, images shattered and an unsung hero is unearthed in this poignant and telling no ...more

Pretty freaking awesome!!!! It's great to know the back story to explain why Rosa's mother was the type of person that she was- kind of wish I knew more of her background though, but in that type of environment of strict control, it's easy to see why she was that way. She didn't have anyone like Pelo to influence her and instill strength and the thoughts that it is really ok to be different in her at an early age like Rosa did. I always love to know more about some of the main characters in any ...more

5 Stars!!
Lauren honestly speaks out about the things a new mother goes through but never feels able to share. She also gives insight in Pelo and Esther's marriage. I feel like this story was so raw and real, it will touch people in ways they aren't expecting. I wasn't sure I wanted to know more about her (I was pretty angry with Esther)I'm glad I did. The Willful has given me insight into the life of a few women near and dear to me. It helps me understand them and the choices they've made a lit

This novella was such a beautiful addition to The Woodlands series. I didn't know how to feel about Esther as the series wrapped up. I kind of felt for her, but I definitely didn't like her. But after reading her story, I couldn't help but feel an immense amount of empathy for her, and her situation.

Honestly, I related to Esther more than I'd like to admit. So many of her feelings I have felt. And Lauren Nicolle Taylor paints those flaws so beautifully that even if you don't identify with a lot

This is from Rosa's mom Esther's POV. It's a short story and gives a glimpse into her mind and life. I liked to know her. Seeing Rosa and Pelo from her eyes and getting to know her, why she behaved the way she did and why she made Pelo to leave. After reading The Woodlands, I have been curious, what had happened. I thought she didn't cared that much for Rosa but damn, I am so dead wrong and feel like an idiot.
I finished reading in an hour and way too early, lol didn't knew it was a short story

The Willful is a stunning, heart-wrenching addition to The Woodlands series. It takes you on a journey with Esther and Pelo, from before Rosa was born to when Paulo is introduced. Lauren Nicolle Taylor’s ability to capture these moments with clarity is both impressive and intoxicating. She sweeps you easily into the story, always leaving you wanting more.

The Willful is definitely a must-read!

Lauren's done it again. Written from the heart and she does it just so beautifully! I am not a mother, I'm not even married, but goodness did this book seem to relate to me in some way! I think it relates to everyone in some way!
It so wonderfully ties things up and gives you a greater understanding of Esther and what she went through, loved it!

What an amazing novella. It certainly explains more about Rosa's home life. I feel bad for Ester. Lauren Nicolle Taylor, you've done it again!

The Willful

This is a good explanation of the steps leading up to Pelo's departure from the family. As well as Paulo's entry.

I received a copy of The Willful from the publisher for an honest review a few weeks before it was released, and I fell in love with Esther and Pelo.
In the entire Woodlands series, Esther was portrayed as a very weak character that didn't really care about anyone expect her current husband. But in the Willful, Ms. Taylor goes into her background.
The first lines of the book... "I'm the moon, and he is the sun. I'm cool, quiet, and uniformly gray. He is a blast, a flare of fire. I circle around th

As someone with a bit more strength and independence than others, it is actually quite difficult to understand the type of mentality Esther contains. That being said, it was simple enough to follow her reasonings and I enjoyed learning her side of the story. It also gave a far clearer depiction of Pelo than anyone else could. In the beginning, after all, we learn only of Rosa's devotion to him as a child and then her anger at him later on. We get no real sense of who Pelo is and why he had to be ...more

Amazing!! You really should read this before the final book The wanted. I suddenly found myself loving a character that before this book I had not only brushed off but been extremely irritated with. Laurens ability as an author to make you connect with fictional characters is one that I have not come across in a long time. If you are invested in The Woolands series this is a must!

Much too short.

I understand this is just a novella but I read it in 35 minutes. I thought I would get more answers but it only addressed Pelo's and Esther's relationship. What about Paulo? How did he end up so bitter and cruel? Why did she stay? How could she let him treat her and Rosa that way?

It's really interesting seen things from Esther eyes, they were moments that I didn't understand the way she acts around Rosa and now is a little bit clear. It's hard to see but I believe that Love is not enough in any relation. You need communication, similar or same goals, understanding and another things.

I understand Esther now and I respect her more.

Good incite.

It was nice getting to see the real side of Esther because in the Woodlands books she seemed cold and unloving.
