Re-read 1/16/20: I didn't love this quite as much on re-read as I did the first time I read it, but it was still really good and I'm excited to finally dive further into the series!

Original read 12/11/18: I LOVED THIS SO MUCH OMG. The only reason I'm not giving it a full 5 star is bc the sex scenes were fade to black but everything else about this was PERFECT. *kisses my gay ass fingertips*

If I catch you reading Fifty Shades of Grey, I am going to politely remove it from your grasp and hand you a copy of Sunstone instead. And if you’re into great characters and wonderful, sweet, funny romance stories that explore sexuality, then I am also going to hand you a copy of Sunstone.

To be clear, this is a story that heavily features BDSM, but I want you to set aside any preconceived notions you have about that and read it anyway. First of all, it is an incredibly beautiful, informative, a

Sunstone was everything I wanted and oh so much more! I'm so pleased, I'm actually grinning writing this review. I laid on the floor in front of my bookshelves, read this, got up, came to my computer and started typing this review with a goofy grin on my face. It just won't go away! I'm so impressed!

Stjepan Šejić worked on the end art of Rat Queens, Vol. 2: The Far Reaching Tentacles of N'rygoth, and I have to say that I wasn't that impressed with it. I was a little apprehensive to go into this

It appears at a glance here at the beginning of some reviews that it is important to quickly write something like, “well, it’s not my kinda thing,” or “Whoa! I was not expecting that!” as this series focuses on an F/F relationship with a (light, he defensively says!) (but constantly present) bdsm theme. I read everything from picture books to Russian novels to YA to romances now, so knowing the series focused on this topic wasn’t something that would make me run away from it, let’s say. I got it ...more

I'd really like to read Sunstone from the perspective of someone who isn't intimately familiar with BDSM culture. As a submissive myself, I went into Sunstone thinking it would "normalize" BDSM; it'd make BDSM seem "regular," so to speak, and demonstrate that kink culture isn't something to be frightened of, but rather, something quite romantic - personal, exciting, and deeply intimate. Reading it, I did think, "well, this is cute, and sweet, and charming and funny, and it sure does make BDSM se ...more

Bullet Review:

This was recommended, oddly enough, by my local comic bookstore guy - and he recommended it to me, not for the hot lesbian bondage sex but for the insane humor and narrative.

You know what? He hit the nail on the head - this book is hilarious and charming, with the most adorable narrative voice I've read in a long while. I've never read any erotic comics before, certainly no lesbian BDSM, but this was absolutely charming and adorable!

"Fifty Shades", eat your heart out!

Seeing a book called Sunstone from Top Cow comics, I expected some kind of fantasy book. I never could have guessed that Sunstone would refer to the safe word between a BDSM couple. The subject manner isn't really my thing. That being said Sejic writes really snappy dialogue and is a gifted artist. The book reminds me of the humor and art style of Strangers in Paradise crossed with Fifty Shades of Gray.
A lot of great reviews have already been written on this work so I'll keep this short and point out my impressions as a non-BDSM lesbian who has triggers around exploitive porn.

First off, is it exploitive? No.

Does a male author/illustrator somehow adversely impact the depiction of a f/f relationship? No.

Is this in the fantasy genre (i.e. vampires, demons, unicorns, dragons)? No. The cover looks like it may be but this is a contemporary romance in our everyday world.

Is BDSM well represented? I th

This was excellent. I saw the cover of this book and was intrigued, but I'll he honest, it looks a little like it could border on sexual porn more than tasteful BDSM. I was wrong. One of my friends read this and loved it, she said it was tastefully done and beautiful and I knew I had to try it. I'm so glad that I have...

This is the story of Ally and Lisa, two women who are both excited by the ideas of BDSM but have never had a lot of luck finding people to trust enough to practice it with. BDSM

Lisa and Ally thought they could get together for some BDSM entertainment with no emotional strings attached. Hahaha, you silly girls, that would be too easy. Five graphic novel volumes worth of feeeelings later, the series concluded, and Sunstone fans everywhere almost freaked out until we were told there would be spinoffs. It's too hard to let go of such a geeky, adorable, complex-because-people-are-dorks romance vibe like this! If you have triggers for BDSM elements, clearly this won't work f ...more

This is an "it was okay", with the art being around 3*-4* (a bit too cutesy for my taste) and the story unfortunately so much less that it rounded to 2*.

I'm afraid I was bored. The reason most likely is the same reason why a lot of other YA and NA bores me: I'm past that age and in general I'm not interested in many of the current problems, a lot of which are artificially pushed or caused by the media in my opinion.

Next comes that as someone who's entered the lifestyle at around that age herself
This is my first encounter with artist Stjepan Šejić and I have to say I enjoy his style. I really took my time with it, reading it in small increments and absorbing all the artwork.

The story is about Ally and Lisa, two women who meet online over BDSM and start exchanging ideas about their fantasies. After two months of increasing engaging encounters they decide to meet in real life. The two straight women connect and become friends with bdsm domme-sub benefits and slowly realise they are not so

Oh my Gosh

Sexy, romantic, witty and so relatable. This is everything you need from a BDSM lesbian fantasy. I absolutely adored this.
Funny, sexy, sweet and all the eye candy you can handle!

I generally am not a big fan of graphic novels but a friend recommended this series and boy am I glad she did. I wasn't really sure what to expect but I was very pleasantly surprised when I ended up falling in love with the main characters.

This is not just a graphic novel to stare at (half) naked women, the story line is absolutely captivating. It tells of how Ally and Lisa met through their shared interest in BDSM.

Waaaah ! I just binged-read all the volumes so I can't really give any specific about each volume today. I will do it next time I read them (and there will be one I can tell )
To sum-up :
The art is awesome.
The main characters are so sweet.
There is no porn vibes thank you sweet god.
It's sensual, tender and beautiful and I'm so in love with all of it ^^.

This wasn't really my favourite but I found the bonus content interesting and the art is pretty. The author's inspiration was a better story to me than the actual story though. There seemed to be a lot of writing for a comic, too, and I didn't feel enough of a connection to the characters to want to read all that. It felt like they were trying too hard to be awkward and likeable. I liked that the author tried to give meaning to things but it fell flat for me.

Maybe I'd have a different POV if
Good artwork with nice page layouts and colouring.

The story is sweet and a little sappy and for a length of 87 pages pretty simple and straight forward. Girl meets girl online, they get to know each other, then decide to meet. Lots of anxiety and girly angst. They meet, they like, they get on with girly bondage. Not too graphic.

Lots of cute latex outfits. Some more pretty good artwork.

36 pages of extra stuff... kinda a lot, right?

Better than ok, but it lacks any kind of tension and is a little

First: Please, if you have the intention of doing anything kinky portrayed in this graphic novel (or in general) PLEASE do intensive research and do not try anything without the proper safety. This was highly unrealistic in a lot of aspects. Be safe.

This was disappointing. A graphic novel that is about a BDSM relationship and is not porn?! That's right on my alley.

And it was like that... kind of.

The art was gorgeous, some pictures I want to rip off and display them (not going to d

While the artwork is outstanding and undeniably sexy, the story is fantastic. Stjepan Šejić is a great writer and a great artist, and is my probably my favorite right now.

Stjepan Šejić has the most beautiful, breath-taking, detailed art that I literally want to scream whenever he posts sneak peaks of it on his Facebook. [heart eyes] I've read Death Vigil a few years ago and LOVED it and I've been meaning to give Sunstone a go but somehow never got around to it. The time has come friends!

The story is actually really sweet, I loved LOVED both Ally (pls accept my hand in marriage) and Lisa and I'm so SO glad that none of the story was exploitative in any w

The art was absolutely BEAUTIFUL and just overall so well done. And god, I just loved everything about its content. It had a lot of really good information about BDSM in there (that didn't feel info-dumpy though). The characters were so lovely. I loved seeing them go through all of these different emotions, how nervous they were but a

This volume was so good! I'm in love!

I hoped it'll be sexy and pretty and the volume is all that, but also it is sweet and funny and cute and relatable. I loved Lindsay and Ally developing relationship, they meet online, become friends based on common tastes in things and BDSM in particularly, they meet irl after chatting for a couple of months and things go so well! I like both of the leading women and I'm fond of Ally's friend Alan.

It could've been a full five star reaad if the art

Every now and again I like to read something out of my normal range, my comfort zone even. Maybe its my age or my mind working, I just don't know, but I have really enjoyed stretching my brains out a bit to indulge in something new this past couple of years.
Sunstone was revealed to me by watching John Wick's unreview series on Youtube. I went there to watch a review on a roleplaying game and he also threw out some ideas of what he is reading right now. Sunstone was one of his suggestions.

I found this amazing story thanks to my online friends… when I asked them for some graphic novel / comic book recommendations and heard that this is an FF story with some BDSM themes, I was immediately intrigued ;) so imagine my surprise that after actually reading it, the main two adjectives I would use to describe it would be: hilarious and adorable ;) I kid you not, it was exactly that :) yeah, there were some sexy af scenes as well, but most of the time I was grinning from ear to ear about t ...more

I was a bit hesitant about reading this book, but it was highly recommended by a friend who's into BDSM as a good and sound view into that world.

And I am glad I did because this book is, first and foremost, a book about nice, interesting and sometimes crazy people, who, in general are either deep into or exploring their own connection to BDSM. So no cheep titillation, just something positive about friends, trust and love.

Recommended, no doubt to anyone who wants to know a little more about this

Sunstone deals with what some people might call uncomfortable topics, but which will surprise no one who is acquainted with:
(a) fanfiction
(b) M/M romances
(c) anime fan-girls

I happen to be one of those people.

So the point is that, other than the spectacular art and loving relationships, there's nothing surprising. If however, you were:
(a) living under a rock/without internet
(b) introduced to BDSM via 50 Shades of Anything

“Before all this , I had my life figured out to some extent ... [sic.]

The mundane nature of it was like a familiar painting on the wall. The one you lived with long enough that you don't even notice it anymore.

But that morning, something changed. That morning I noticed a flame of paint falling off from it.

There seemed to be a while other painting underneath it ... [sic.]

“How the hell did I end up here?

I certainly had no intentions of making this comic. There was, in fact, no comic to be made. Sunstone was the end result of the deepest fast-food and burn-out I have ever experienced in my life.

It was three years ago. I had just finished my last issue of Witchblade, a comic that I had lived and hated at that point.

Comics itself had nothing to do with it ... [sic.] Truth was, artistically speaking, I hit a wall and there was no way past it. In my eyes I wasn't a storyteller anymore. I was a grinder going through the emotions.

And I was burnt out.

So there I was, sitting and hate-staring my computer monitor... or way...too...long... ,

Something had to change. I had to find the spark, which by that time, I had obviously lost. I started reminiscing about those great outbursts of inspiration and drive I experienced in my past.

And there, I remembered it. The most exciting moment of my career. It was just before I got hired by Top Cow. I was in my early twenties, and my dream was to become a comic artist. Chances of this living in Croatia were slim to none, but my work was noticed, and I got asked to do a fetishistic erotic comic.

Not all that unusual in Europe.

I was ecstatic. For the first time I would be able to help my family by doing something I love. I remember drawing up a storm. I drew over 30 sample pages, and then crazily enough, Top Cow's offer came in.

I had to make a choice. And it was a choice I never regretted.

But I remembered something about those long list sample pages ... They were expressive.

There was so much energy to them ... Energy that got lost in my work over time as a result of trying to emulate other people's work.

I shrugged ... said "Fuck it!" turned to Linda, and told her about my idea ...”
