This was a lot slower than the previous installments, but the teenage melodrama was still on its A-game:

STATE OF THE UNION (previous SOTU)

Zoey remains my favorite, but needs to take a chill pill
Jake is one drink away from becoming an alcoholic
Lucas is going to mess up his relationship if he doesn't chillax on the sex talk
Ben remains a sweetheart
Nina is stronger than any of us will ever be
Chris much to my surprise was too good to be true
Aisha needs a hug (thanks (view spoiler)

The Islanders Vol.2

Although I did not read the first Islanders book, I found the second to be captivating from the beginning. It was hard at first to grasp the characters as I felt there were so many main characters to try and figure out. Once I had a mental image for each the story fell in line nicely. This was an easy read and I am curious to see how the story plays on in the next two books.

Feeling nostalgic for the books of my youth, I revisited Katherine Applegate and her Islanders omnibus editions (first released as the Making Out series way back in 1993. Yes, I am that old...).

While I found them to be overly-dramatic and a little bit cheesy on second reading, I think they would be loved by teenagers today. YA has taken a much-welcome step in the sphere of fantasy, science fiction and Dystopia, largely, in recent years so for teenagers looking for the traditional romance novels

This volume tackles a touchy subject and does a decent job of showing how fear and shame can determine a person’s actions. In the end, there is a confrontation and one of the characters is able to begin to recover and heal. The characters continue to reveal themselves to the reader. The writers are able to capture the unique mix of uncertainty and bravado that makes the teen years so fraught – just when these young people feel they are grown up and able to manage their lives they find themselves ...more

Even though this series seems to be a light contemporary series there are some major issues dealt with. In vol 2 of The Islanders the characters deal with racism, alcohol and drug abuse and sexual abuse. I really enjoy these stories because they show teens dealing with series issues as well as just being teens.
