This is the first time I’ve been able to find a solid approach to calculating how long I need to run my drip irrigation system using environmental factors, plant types, etc.

A lot of this was covered the basics I’ve explored through trial and error, and probably could have saved me lots of time. If you’re going to tackle a drip irrigation project a 10 minute YouTube video will certainly get you started, but reading a full book like this will explain the what and why, and help you design a more efficient system from the get go!

-4 stars. a much better, more in-depth book than the other two i looked at. the author has a sense of humor. i appreciated all the diagrams. i'm still not convinced i need all the fancy main assembly parts when my garden is completely flat and small enough to be all on one section. why cant i just hook up the hose to in-line emitter hosing and cap the ends? i don't need a timer. i don't need subsurface anything. i don't think i need a pressure regular given the small size and level garden. i never needed a backflow preventer with soaker hoses. however i can understand why a filter would be a good idea.

-wants you to have an atmospheric vacuum breaker, a check valve, a filter, a pressure regulator, two mounting brackets with stabilizing legs, plus multiple adapters and transition parts to make all those parts fit together between the faucet and the drip hose. the brackets/brace/stakes are needed to support the weight of the assembly.

-vacuum breaker must be installed 12" or more higher than all tubing/hosing. the arrow points downstream.

-Amiad filter suggested. clean out filter once a year (or more) with a toothbrush. suggests a 'Y' filter over an inline filter because its more effective. the larger the number on the filter mesh, the smaller the particle it traps. 150 mesh is good for city water. a metal screen filter cylinder is far better than plastic.

-pressure regulator, Senninger brand. 25 psi low flow.

-inline emitters keeps sediment and silt in suspension so it wont settle out and clog emitters.

-1/4" inline self cleaning emitters 6-12" has small turning radius good for vegetable gardens. Agrifim Duraflo jr dripper line.

-compression fittings over insert fittings

-soften hose ends in hot water to help insert fittings, including barbed ends.

-p. 37 for picture of main assembly and all the fittings

-pipe threads are different than hose threads and need adapters.

-mice/gopher/voles are able to chew holes in soaker hoses [which may explain why mine keep sprouting holes all season long]

-drip hose shrinks in cooler weather, up to 1-2 feet per 100ft of hose. snake it loosely and don't stake hose too securely. leave a gap for shrinkage or expansion.

-don't place emitters next to plant crowns or trunks.

-hose layout includes supply header and laterals

-multiple subsystems each with shut-off valves, from one supply header allows you to switch between different sections of the garden with only one main assembly for them all.

-slip compression coupling with end cap is a better choice than figure 8 closures which can crack the hose at the bend.

-p. 45 diagram for manual ball valves and how to attach them to the tubing with various adapters. ball valve seals more securely than gate valve.

-no more than 326 feet of inline emitter 1/2 GPH (gallons per hour) with 12" spacing. any more than that and split off into a separate section.

-after installing, flush lines before closing end cap.

-ET evapo-transpiration rate. find figures for your local climate at cooperative extension office. weekly or monthly average inches per day. for the math, pages 51-56. p. 52 chart for daily water use based on evapo-transpiration rates and square feet of plant cover.

-infrequent deep irrigations produce two periods in the cycle in which the plants growth in hindered, during the drought state and when the soil is saturated. either extreme too wet or too dry causes a biological lag where nutrient uptake is reduced. instead irrigate frequently, and avoid too wet or too dry. especially in vegetable gardens.

-inline pressure compensating emitter tubing 1/2 GPH 12" interval is the recommended size/type. 1/4" for containers, or raised beds.

-Spin-loc fittings.

-p. 148 chart of maximum length of tubing based on tubing/pipe size/type.

As a novice, this book felt like a lot, but, now, working through the process of mapping out and preparing my drip irrigation system, I feel as though I can complete the project. The book is intense and comprehensive. A useful -- though maybe somewhat inaccessible to some -- tool.

A lot of useful information on system design, maintenance and expansion. Author provides irrigation science basics, explains evapotranspiration-based watering time calculations, and makes compelling case for frequent shallow watering (although he notes that for some people deep watering means soaking the soil metre deep, while for others 15 cm is extremely deep). Well-written with a little humour, at times forced, best evidenced in glossary.

1992 edition is a bit dated especially as far as brand recommendations go — most of those brands or products are unavailable now. Not enough explanation on various sprinklers, spitters, bubblers, and misters designs for ground covers and flower beds. Possibly, because not much was available then.
