To her family, Olivia Middleton is a problem of the most vexing sort. With her older two sisters married off, Olivia is now the target of her mother's matrimonial scheming. Shy and somewhat plain, Olivia prefers the thrill of a gothic novel to the hunt for a husband. And as far as her family is concerned, something must be done. But Olivia has no interest in

Cute story, these novellas by Lily Maxton really are too short for me to feel connected in any ways but they are just cute little stories. I went through this book in 20 minutes. lol

In this book we have a shy heroine Olivia, and a "I will not get married" hero William. Both are rather typical characters. Olivia was shy and liked book. William was popular with the ladies and was not crazy about getting leg-shackled in the holy matrimony but did not mind a tupping with our bookish shy Olivia. But

First of all, let me start by saying that I am following the infamous Goodreads classification in which a two star rating is an okay read.

And by okay read,_ in this one_ I mean that I liked reading it. So why not a three star rating?

Because this was just too short!!! (yes, I know this is a novella o_O but even so, a little more development in quite a number of fronts would just do this tale justice!)

OMG THE LOVE MATCH FEATURED A MAIN COUPLE WHO BOND OVER THEIR SHARED LOVE OF BOOKS, LIBRARY SEXY TIMES GALORE AND ENDED WITH WILLIAM WRITING AND DEDICATING AN ENTIRE BOOK OF POETRY TO OLIVIA.

...clearly I cannot get through a review of a Lily Maxton book without yelling in all caps. I blame it on the prose. No, seriously. The way she’s able to weave certain words together that result in the highest emotional effect possible...it’s just incredible. And I’m probably overblowing my reading

To pass the time, she turned to the mantel and examined the figurines placed there. The one nearest was a porcelain cow. Rather ugly, she thought, as she lifted it and turned it over in her hands.

“Searching for ghosts?”

She jumped, and the cow flew out of her hand.

Mr. Cross deftly caught it in midair and set it back on the mantel where it would be safe from her. “Still skittish, I see.”

Olivia Middleton is the happiest crawled up with a good book (I love her already), but she is the last unmarried daughter of her family & her scheming mom wants to go to house party STALK her next prey aka son-in-law. Mr. William cross is there with his glorious hair, dazzling eyes & he is a walking heart breaker, at least that is what Olivia heard. The Love Match is a short, historical romance novella. Olivia Middleton is the youngest (and shyest) of three sisters and her mother despairs of her ever marrying. At a house party, while her mother schemes to get Olivia noticed by the lord of the manor, Olivia’s eye is caught by Mr. William Cross (definitely not what her mother had in mind). William is intrigued by Olivia’s quiet and shy ways, especially when she’s anything but shy in his presence. As these two get to know one another at the ho ...more

Recommends it for: Anyone who wants an excellent, quick historical regency read.
If you have just a couple of hours to immerse yourself in a regency romance, Lily Maxton’s A Love Match is a great choice that just hit the market. This novella is the third one in Maxton’s Sisters of Scandal series, and it features a delightful bookworm named Olivia Middleton who catches the attention of the charming and slightly infuriating William Cross during a country house party. Now that Olivia’s two older sisters are happily married, Olivia is forced to attend the party by her overbearin ...more

This delightful historical romance novella is the story of Olivia and William. Having had two sisters end up in marriages tainted by scandal, Olivia knows she is expected to make a proper match, preferably with a gentleman of high society. When she meets William, a writer and book lover himself, she can't help but be attracted to him and when circumstances present them with the opportunity for a little dalliance they find themselves unable to resist. But when they are discovered and marriage is ...more

A young woman ruined by choice by a man who frustrates and intrigues her. Olivia was an interesting female protagonist. She has no desire to marry the men her mother presents to her. They're men of society but they don't catch her eye like Mr. William Cross does. According to her mother, William isn't a man worth considering.

William's reason for not marrying isn't because of a broken heart, an unfaithful fiancee, a deceased wife. His father died of a broken heart. He gave his love to a woman wh

Sweet, but not very compelling. The main characters were initially quite engaging. The hero, for example, keeps startling the heroine by walking up behind her unnoticed, and there are some amusing exchanges between them in these scenes. He's interested in her, but not sure why, and she is not susceptible to his practiced flirtatious charm, so there's a naturalness to how things develop at first. However, there's a spiteful rival to Olivia, and Olivia's mother is a tiresome harridan caricature wi ...more

Although this story is just as good as the ones before, it was not so memorable to me. You get a bookish and socially awkward youngest sister Olivia who is now the target of her mother's ruthless matchmaking schemes. She prefers books to socializing but Lady Middleton is anxious to hook her daughter up to a titled gentleman at a house-party. William Cross is not someone who'd be expected to be intrigued by the brainy beauty but he found himself more and more captivated by her.

So okay, we've been

I have the same comments and complaints for The Love Match as I did for Book 2 in the series, The Wager (which was a little bit better than this one). Novellas are not the right format for Lily Maxton stories. She is too good of a story teller to limit her tales to 80ish pages. The characters are interesting and the plots are unique but because they are novellas, there is not enough development in either category and the book ends up being a shadow of a tale than the story it aught to be.

Short stories are not very popular with me. I tend to feel rushed or unfulfilled. Sometimes the character development suffers. This was definitely not the case here. I loved the story! Olivia was charming and William was a great match for here. I thoroughly enjoyed this little gem.

This is the complete review as it appears at my blog dedicated to reading, writing (no 'rithmatic!), movies, & TV. Olivia is the third sister in her family. Her elder sisters are happily married to men they love. Her mother wants Olivia to make a good match. Only a title will do.

William is known as a women charmer. He is personable and handsome and he has vowed he will only marry when he finds a love match. In his heart he admits to himself that will never happen.

William is interested in Olivia because she is intelligent, amusing and a really bad liar. Olivia is not interested in William until she finds that

Oooh, what a yummy book! Olivia is the last unmarried daughter of three in her family and her mother is scheming any way she can to get her married and she wants him to carry a title. But Olivia isn't interested in any of the men her mother has brought her way. She would much rather curl up with a good gothic novel. When an invitation to a house party is given, Olivia is told she is hunting for barons!

Once at the house party, no one catches Olivia's eye except William Cross, whom she met before.

A bookworm and a writer? A match made in heaven--with an absolutely sigh-worthy proposal. Why don't more proposals involve books? An oversight, surely...

Olivia's the last remaining Middleton sister--we saw her two elder siblings marry in The Affair and The Wager , and though she's happy for them both, Olivia's not sure she'll ever have what they do. She is sure, though, that she doesn't want to settle for less.

William, who saw his father ruined by love, suspects that he might take after his m

After one well-behaved sister went from a countess to a bookseller’s wife and the other went from an outspoken, unmarriageable prospect to a countess, Olivia is the only unmarried Middleton left – and she has quite a lot to live up to. The trouble is that unlike her sisters, Olivia is neither prim and proper nor bold and opinionated. Instead she’s shy and much prefers books to the company of others. Which makes the idea of husband hunting at a country house party sound like her idea o

Why did I want to read this book?

I absolutely adored The Wager, book 2 in the Sisters of Scandal novella series by Lily Maxton. That was my first book from this author so I’m really excited to read another one of hers.

What worked for me?

This is book 3 in the Sisters of Scandal series.

Since her two older sister have gotten married, Olivia Middleton is the sole focus of her mother who is trying to get her married to a man with a title. Going to a house party where she can mingle with eligible men, Olivia would much rather be in the library or in her room reading a book. That is until she meets William Cross.

William Cross, known as a heart breaker amongst the ton, is determined not to marry for love. He saw his father die from a b

I didn't think I was susceptible to beautiful book covers (especially because I read ebooks), but... I bought this book because the cover is beautiful and I want that dress. And, because I try to read every book that I buy, I read it.

Olivia's character is interesting and rather charming, and -- aside from the obligatory opposition to love for Important Reasons Hinting at a Tragic Past -- so is William's. The pacing of their story is a little too quick, however, and its speed doesn't give a reade

Lily Maxton grew up in the Midwest, reading, writing, and daydreaming amidst cornfields. After graduating with a degree in English, she decided to put her natural inclinations to good use and embark on a career as a writer.

When she’s not working on a new story, she likes to tour old houses, add to her tea stash, and think of reasons to avoid housework.

“You have ink on your cheek,” he noted softly.

She glanced at his dirty hands. “That’s your fault. I hope it washes off.”

“It should.” He stared at her as though trying to puzzle her out. “When I was first introduced to you last Season, I thought you were the picture of the wilting wallflower. But you’re not, are you?”

“I thought I was,” she said, nearly as puzzled as he was.

“But not with me?”

“Not with you,” she agreed.

“Probably because I’m so unimpressive.”

“Most likely,” she said.

And after a heartbeat, they smiled at the same time.”
