Like The Book Thief, Nodame Cantabile is a series of books I would love to read, savor, read again, and sing about. If it were a person, I would marry it.

This is the image that started it all:

At the time, I wasn't into anime and manga the way I used to be in highschool, but then I saw this photo and fell in love with the guy. Yes, I happen to have a penchant for falling for bishounen (those gorgeous men that plague anime whatever genre). I mean, look at them:

Besides, Chiaki is a gorgeous classical pianist/conductor! Gimme!

From the synopsis:
The son of a famous pianist, music student Shinichi Chiaki dreams of studying abroad and becoming a conductor like his mentor. Unfortunately, his fear of flying grounds his lofty plans! As he watches other classmates achieve what he has always wanted, Shinichi wonders if he should quit music altogether.

Then one day he meets fellow student Megumi Noda, also known as Nodame. This oddball girl cannot cook, clean, or even read a music score, but she can play the piano in incomparable Cantabile style. And she teaches Chiaki something that he has forgotten: to enjoy his music, no matter where he is.

It looks like your typical disillusioned guy meets manic pixie dream girl. But it's so much more than that.

What I got from this series is that to be successful, one must work hard and never let go of your dreams. It's going to be a hard road, but it'll be worth it. If you really love something, you strive hard to improve upon it. I know it's a little cliche, but it's true: When you love, you strive to be better.

This series is quirky funny, with a lot of quirky characters. And yet, I felt the realness of their problems. I was pleasantly introduced to the world of classical music and the people who want to make it in this industry. Being a frustrated musician myself, I was thoroughly invested in this world. I didn't even think I could enjoy classical music, but Nodame Cantabile made me appreciate it. But it's not just about the music.

The thing I loved most in this is how Tomoko Ninomiya created her characters. They all felt real and flawed, yet they were people you wanted to aspire to be. Be they minor or major characters, they come alive from the pages; you like them, you hate them, you don't forget them.

Chiaki and Nodame's relationship is strange, yet it works. Personally, I think it's perfect, because they bring out the best in each other, they challenge themselves and each other, and as a result, they become two very admirable characters. That goes with the other pairs in this series. They're the kind of relationships I just want to have. *queue severe frustration*

I could go on and on. What can I say? I loved the weirdness! I read the manga, watched the anime version for this, and the drama version, downloaded all episodes and movies, listened to almost every soundtrack, I have a stuffed toy of Nodame as a mongoose , and the only thing that's missing is the complete collection of the Nodame Cantabile manga. I'm a crazed fan.

It's been three years since I started this series, and two years when it ended. If I could, I would read the whole mange online again if it wasn't so bothersome to read manga online. I still rewatch the series, and it still brings tears to my eyes. Seriously, if you love this series like I do, I think we would be great friends.

--- Nodame Cantabile 1-25 ---

Plotnya segar, begitupun gaya humornya.

My Favoritest manga!!!!

I Love classical since read it..
I Love Tchakovsky since read it..
I knew the word 'Cadenza' since read it...
I Knew that this world is bigger than anything since read it...

although this manga didn't give so much romantic portion, i've always like the way Nodame and Chiaki grow their relationship slowly..

It's so interesting watch both of them fighting each other (I dunno how to explain), since, Chiaki is the perfectionist, and Nodame is completely a disaster..

The other supporting characters is also great
They are Franz (france pianist), Tanya (Russian pianist), Kuroki (Kurokin- The Oboist), Mine (The Violist), and many more................

Such a fantastic Manga...

I saw and enjoyed quite a few episodes of the anime series of this one, but not the whole thing so thought I’d pick up the manga. A disadvantage is one has to keep looking up the pieces of music mentioned while in the show one could hear them in the show. Anyway, in this first volume, we meet Shinchi Chiaki and Megumi Noda students at a music school—there are completely different from each other to say the least, Chiaki comes from a family of musicians and wants to make his name as a conductor, but his fear of flying (and travelling by sea) has kept him from going to Europe (where he lived as a child) to pursue his dream. He often ends up depressed. Nodame, on the other hand, is very talented but plays entirely by ear—she can’t read music and lives in a constantly messy (very messy) house. By chance, and partly because Chiaki has ended up ticking off the piano instructor he was working with, the two end up with the same teacher and discover each other’s talents (and flaws). Nodame immediately takes to Chiaki while he seems to be warming up to her too, as they begin to play together. Chiaki also turns out to be a talented violinist. The most fun scene in this one for me was when Chiaki has almost nightmares about Nodame’s filthy house, and can’t bear it so much that he arrives and scrubs the whole place clean!

i watch, dorama version :

Nodame - Noda Megumi is a girl who like playing piano since she is a little girl, but weirdy she can't read a music score ?? She play it with Cantabile Style - when she hear another people playing piano, she can remembered it and played it. She is a little like stupid girl who cannot cook and really lazy to clean her apartement where she live.

One day when she meet with Chiaki-sama - the son of a famous pianist who have a dream becoming a famous conductor. But too bad his fear of flying make his dream must wait. she teaches Chiaki something that he has forgotten for a long time that is to enjoy the music we play / hear no matter when and where.

I read Nodame Cantabile by Tomoko Ninomiya. I really enjoyed reading this manga because the script is a realistic and normal life of college of music students so I can sympathize with characters.
I think this manga’s way of drawing pictures is very soft, and it is helpful to make an unique atmosphere of this manga(Nodame is very peaceful manga).
The character design is awesome. There are many interesting characters and their personalities are original. There are two main characters, Nodame and Chiaki. Nodame has a big impact and memorable character because she is different from other characters in josei manga. For example, she often say something that we can not understand such as “ふが〜”. The author uses a lot of original onomatopoeias in the story so it is difficult to translate into English. Also, Chiaki is an unique character in this manga. In chapter 1 of this manga, Chiaki is trapped in the past so there are many flashback pages and his costumes are complex. Another reason why Chiaki changes his costumes many times is Chiaki is very popular so reader can enjoy his change.
The author, Tomoko Ninomiya uses techniques of zoom in and internal in an important scene. Because of it I can see inside of the characters and understand characters’s feelings.

I love this manga!! I can't believe I'm only reading this now! You wouldn't know just by looking at the cover but this manga is absolutely hilarious 😂!! I laughed out loud the entire time!! The main character, Nodame, is a nut job but I love her for it. And I'm in love with the main lead ! Actually I love all the characters. And the love story is AMAZING!! Exactly the kind of subtle ones I LOVE where you can see them grow to rely so much on each other without it being "in your face romantic". And I usually don't like anything that's about music, but this manga made me love the music aspect as well (quite a feat!)

I have read Nodame Cantabile it makes me fun. Especially, I like Nodame (Megumi Noda)'s action. It is strange but it might be good for communication to do action. This manga is girls manga but people of all ages can read this manga and get interested in this manga. This is because this manga has some unique characters and the reader of this manga wanna know the future of love romance about Nodame.
While I told the response of the manga, I think this manga has some interesting characters, the exposition and the setting of the manga. The exposition of Nodame Cantabile is Girls manga and manga of music. Settings of Nodame Cantabile are in modern at Momogaoka College of Music Graduate Studies. The protagonist of this manga has two characters. The first protagonist is Chiaki Shinichi. He is a three-dimensional character, complex and a flawed person. The second protagonist is Megumi Noda. She is also a three-dimensional character. Arcs of this manga are almost flat but rising action, falling action climax will come. If you are interested, I recommend you to read this manga.

Different Folks, Different Notes

Shinichi Chiaki has a passion for conducting but his fear of flying has pretty much grounded his dreams of becoming a great conductor himself. Now disillusioned he has an incredible talent for a whole assortment of musical instruments but no direction in his heart until he is placed with fellow student Megumi Noda who is hopeless when it comes to certain basic life skills but has a unique style that draws the troubled youth from his funk. What connections he makes from here on out will affect everyone as becomes the conductor of his own destiny.

I will rate this manga definitely 5/5! I love everything about this manga but especially I love setting and characters. I decided to read this manga because I was member of Brass Band when I was elementary school student and junior high school student but you can still enjoy reading this manga without any problem even though you didn’t know anything about Brass Band, orchestra and classical music. Also, this manga is not just a Shojo Manga. It also can be said that this manga is Gag Manga and the style of the picture the author draws is not a picture like Shojo Manga picture we imagine so I think even boys can enjoy reading this manga. Furthermore, you can continue reading this manga without getting boring because all characters are very interesting. There is no antagonist in this manga but the story still interesting. Some characters act like antagonist sometimes but you can’t hate them because they are so unique. My most favorite character is Chiaki senpai, who is protagonist in this manga because he is so cool and I love his passion in music but all of characters are my favorite because I think there is no flat character in this manga and everyone is three dimensional characters. They also are flawed and cliched characters and characterization of all characters are very simple and easy to understand. That why I really enjoy reading this manga and everyone would enjoy this manga!

This manga is love comedy in college of music. The main character are Nodame and Chiaki. Their major are piano. Their pernonalities are completely reverse, but to be affected each other, their duet become amazing. I really like this manga because conversations of Nodame and Chiaki are really funny. Additionally, Nodame has senses that Chiaki doesn’t have and vice versa. Nodame always enjoy playing piano and Chiaki have amazing sense of music. I really enjoyed this manga.

Re-read 2021: Decided that I wanted to re-read the WHOLE Nodame Cantabile series again. I love the series though from reading my review the ending apparently sucked, oh dear. Well, still enough volumes left before we get to there. This was a delightful first introduction to Chiaki, Nodame, and also Mine. Nodame is a chaotic being with an even more chaotic home, but she can play. Reading notes takes her long, but she can also play a piece perfectly by just hearing it once. I love Nodame though she should really grow up a bit. This isn't how you should act. Chiaki is rude and mean, but I can see that he does care about Nodame somewhere. Why else make food and clean up for her?
I loved reading about music, see them all play, read about Chiaki's dreams and hopes (and I love that he doesn't just want to be a conductor but also learn about the instruments).
This was fun!

Review for the whole manga. :)

I finished this series a week or so ago. And wow what a ride it was. Finally I had a chance to read the whole manga, and not just parts of it. I must say, now that I read the manga, that the anime and jdorama did quite a good job. Most we find in the manga is also found in the anime or jdorama.

The first few manga volumes focus on Nodame and Chiaki, how they met, how they grew together and how they both are struggling with various things that life throws at them. This part was ok, it was hard to get through things at times, especially how Chiaki was acting (all mean and harsh) and how Nodame was acting (overly dramatic, stalkerish and in overall I found her just weird at times). But it also had wonderful things happening. Also the side characters were just awesome, I really loved them and their antics.

The second part of the manga focusses on them being Paris, how both are starting with new things. Nodame with school, Chiaki with conducting. How they both are adapting to life in there. Especially in the case of Nodame, who didn't have a chance to learn French (I loved the parts that she learned French by watching anime, or that she was using some strange dictionary and almost got Chiaki in trouble). We also meet various other characters, all living in that house. They are all trying to work hard and try their best.
I loved this part especially since it focusses so much on Chiaki and Nodame, and their relationship. Especially Chiaki, he is more and more getting to love Nodame. You noticed it already, but in these parts it is just all the more obvious, that although Nodame is totally nuts and at times annoying, he truly loves her.

Then we get the part where Chiaki decides to move out, and he gets busier and busier. This was the part where I at times cried. Poor Nodame, he never cared to tell her in advance that he was leaving the apartment. I seriously wanted to smack Chiaki for that, how he treated Nodame. I am sure he could have told her, sure she might have snapped and acted weird, but that is a normal response. Someone you love so dearly leaves you.

The ending... well let's say I was seriously disappointed with it. I expected a lovely ending, where things would finally be finished. Either be a wedding, or a proposal, or something else exciting, instead it ends like how the normal volumes do. With nothing. It is a really disappointment. I went through 23 volumes, cheered and cried, laughed and shouted, and what do I get? A totally crappy ending that doesn't finish or end anything.
So I am just hoping the mangaka will pick it up again, or at least tries to make a decent ending.

In overall, I would really recommend this series to everyone.

This is a funny manga about college students studying music. Shinichi is a piano major, but really wants to study conducting instead. He quits his piano lessons in a fit of anger, then meets Megumi Nodame, who is a free spirit. Nodame can barely read music, but plays piano beautifully from memory in a Cantabile (singable) style. When these two opposites become friends, Shinichi learns to enjoy music again, and Nodame is forced to clean her filthy apartment. When Nodame is asked to accompany a fellow violin student, it's up to Shinichi to make sure she is prepared for their music exams.

I liked the characters pretty well, but nobody really stood out to me. I mainly just liked the parts about the music and the piano, since I'm a pianist.

Shinichi is really uptight, and he learns to loosen up and make mistakes. I didn't really like his character because he is angry and depressed most of the time. But Nodame brings some sunlight into his life and into his music! I did like his musical journey, discovering what he wants to study.

Nodame is completely irresponsible, and can't cook or clean or even bathe herself regularly. What is she, mentally disabled?! Shinichi cleans her apartment for her and cooks her meals, and naturally she starts to fall in love with him because he feeds her. (hhmmm... okay? She's not a stray cat.) She got on my nerves, because she's very childish and silly and is constantly hungry. Those seem to be her main traits.
But she has a few great scenes and bits of dialogue where she shows a real insight into music and how it should be played. She also has a beautiful grasp on what it means to accompany an instrumentalist, and the delicate relationship that is balanced between a piano and violin together.

So I loved the parts about music and what it's like to study music in college, but the characters and storyline weren't amazing. The artwork is nothing special either. It's not bad, but it's not grabbing my attention either.

I watched the first two episodes of the dorama, and somehow, I did not like it very much. I was sure I was going to like the manga though. And happily I do. There are things that are better in a manga than in a Live Action (i.e., punches, stumbles).

It is josei, and it is about music.. classical music, so why wouldn't I like it? The Conductor in the manga reminded me a little of our Conductor Luis Szaran (I am a big fan!); passionate and kind. True, Chiaki is kind of grumpy, but he started to grown on me (a little bit anyway) in the last chapters. And although I considered Nodame a bit dumb in the dorama, I like her a lot here. Her ability is amazing, and she is kind of silly (in a childish way) but she is also very sweet and funny.

So now Chiaki has two skilled musicians in his care. Their friendship started smoothly and naturally. As I am determined to continue reading this, I'll probably give the dorama a second chance after I finish the series.

♫♪♫♥♪♫♪♫♪♫♫♫♪♥♪♪♫♪♫♪♫♫♪♪♥♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♥♪♫♫♪♪♪♫♪♫♪♥♫♪♪♫♫♪♫♪♥♫

EDIT(Oct7th): After 5 months, I am done with the manga, the anime and the dorama. I can honestly say this is one of my favorites stories and all three of them were amazingly done. I think everyone should read this manga. It is not long, but thankfully it is not too short either.

Every character was perfectly played by these actors. I loved them!

1. Manga: 23 volumes + the special Opera Hen.
2. Anime: 1st season (23 episodes), 2nd season (11 episodes), 3rd season (11 episodes)
3. Dorama: 11 episodes + 2 Specials + 2 Movies.
