What an amazing follow-up to book one! This has all the classic fantasy vibes in an epic tale with multiple POVs, found family, good vs evil, DRAGONS, epic battles, meddling gods, and a hero's journey. If I could give 6 stars, I would. Cindy is a fantastic story teller!

Very fortunate to recieve an ARC copy of this book after reading the first in the series last year. And while I really liked the first book, I LOVED this one. The story really gathers pace as the book progresses, with the stakes growing increasingly higher. Loved exploring the magic system more, and how the pantheon of gods ties into it, and of course the dragons!! Daeya started to really discover who she is and what good she can do for the world, and her found family gently increases throughout the book. What I really love about this book is how it is told from multiple POVs (like 5 or 6 separate people) from all sides of the conflict, so not only does the reader get to watch all the characters develop their own arc, but you get a real feel of how the conflict can affect everyone, and that who are the good guys and bad guys aren’t always as simple as it first seemed!

This is the second book in The Last Draegion series, and I am now even more invested in this storyline. I also didn’t want it to end.
The characters…oh, the characters. There are quite a few, and you get to know them better in this book. The character arc’s are in-depth and full of growth-and in some cases, plunges into the dark waters of betrayal.
Let’s start with Daeya. I really love her storyline, and how she is coming into her own with her magic abilities, and the prophecy she is to fulfill. She is growing and maturing-learning to hold her tongue and curb her anger. She also learns more about her past, and who her parents truly are. What is most evident is her willingness to make the hard choices for the good of all people, and not just the ones she has been told are worth something. She continues to deconstruct her preconceived notions of “lesser” classes, and learns to treat others with care and dignity.
The other characters add a well-rounded scope to the story-providing tension, a range of emotions, and a balanced storyline. Everyone has a place in the multi-faceted plot, and gives complexity to an amazing and vivid fantasy world. The author has quite the knack for creating a rich and vibrant setting-complete with dragons. Enough said.
I can say, without, a doubt, that this is a must read series for high fantasy lovers. It will pull you in, and leave you wanting more….especially with the cliffhanger Cindy gives us! I can’t wait to read book 3.

Let me tell you what I read the first book, Remnants of a Scarlet Flame, and really enjoyed it. However, this book right here... I absolutely love. While I gave the first book 4 stars, this was 100% a 5 star read.
This is the second book in the duology. In this book you get multiple points of view which I love because you learn a lot about the characters that way. The world building was great. There is a lot of action and intrigue going on in this book. It was definitely, for me, a page turner.
I love that we continued on with some of the characters that we fell in love with in the first book. It gave me the drama that I was looking for with the dragons and the magic. The writing in this book was just as immersive as the first book. Again, I loved the first book but this book blew the first book away. I had personally never heard of the author until the first book but I am such a fan after reading this second book. This is a set that you definitely want to add to your most read list. Now I just have to go and order the physical copies because these will definitely be on my bookshelf.

Absolutely devoured this! If you love found family, dragons, magic, absolute chaos, and a fun pantheon then this is for you. I highly recommend this book and the series in full.
I enjoyed this book so much, I didn't want to finish it because then it'd be done.
Plot, flow, and character development are A+

The first book in this series was amazing en this one is a worthy second book in this series!
The worldbuilding is great and the story just takes you on the best adventure! And I adore Daeya and a lot of the other characters! Every single one of them is so fleshed out that you can almost jump inside their heads.
Now I just have to wait for the next book.. VERY IMPATIENTLY!

Embers picks up where Remnants left off. We finish Daeya and crew's journey to Starlight in the midst of the escalating war. Upon their arrival Daeya's presence in Starlight is met with mixed feelings and the terms offered to her,should she choose ro remain, are not what she expected. Daeya must decide to stay amongst the Alliaansi and earn their trust, or to return to the Gild to those who betrayed her. All while trying to find and bond to a dragon which most of Dessos believes extinct.
The first book in this series was fantastic but this was a masterpiece. Cindy expanded on her world painting a vivid picture of each location we visited. Another layer of the magic system was explained, the way an aethermancer practices magic, offering a better understanding of how many of the Alliaansi practice magic.
I love these characters. I care about and feel connected to them. They have me completely invested in this story. The damaging effects trauma has on the individuals in Dessos runs parallel to PTSD in our world offering a seemless reference to the importance of mental health.
Cindy's attention to detail is impeccable. The pacing was perfect, I was never bored, the plot devolped nicely as did the characters. I cannot say enough about this series. I will be anxiously awaiting book 3.

4.65 stars - i'm rounding up!
Prose: Thankfully there is a Pantheon Guide, Translations, and a pronunciation guide at the back of the book. Regardless the descriptions and artfulness of the writing helps you know what is being said without them. There is also age-appropriate language changes between the different age groups of the cast.
Story Arc/Pacing: It is a sprint right through, but not in a bad way. It’s a long read but you are so immersed in it you get to the end and want more pages to read! Keep it going! So thankful I know there is another one in the works already.
World and Character Building: Just wow. The different characters, the insane lengths Sell goes through to get you to see her world… its immersive. Everything feels like you already know where you are, she doesn’t spoon feed you the descriptions but they are buried in plain sight. The characters feel so real, right down to their personal flaws that you feel like someone you might have met on the street.
Originality: I don’t read a ton of epic fantasy, but there were certainly twists and turns that were shadowed, but not so obvious that they hit you in the face long before you got to the twist in the road. Still the hero story (with different characters in different stages of it at any given time) but well done that you want to see them through to the end.
Page Turner Factor: Stayed up until 1am to get from 60% to the end in one sitting…going to be hard to wait for book 3!
Independent Criteria – Spice Factor: Closed door for several of the character arcs. Didn’t detract from the story, it was simply in the places it needed to be.

Embers Rising weaves a tangled web of dragons, rebels, and forgotten bloodlines. The series does a great job balancing multiple POVs, each of which is so unique and worthy in its own right (okay, there are some baddies in there too), but the heart and soul of this novel is the FMC, Daeya, who continues to rise into her power. Allies, enemies, and *spoiler* a love triangle I can't stop thinking about all center around her and her journey as the last dragon. Ember’s Rising cements The Last Drageion Saga as a must-read series for fans of dragons, defiant hearts, and high-stakes elemental magic.

Um what? Book 1 was good but book 2?! Jeesh the twists and turns and layers of this book had me engrossed. I was daydreaming of this book while I wasn't able to read it. It was incredible! The world is richly layered, the characters are intriguing in how unique they all are, there's some shocks that left me rereading pages just to ensure I wasn't seeing things. Then there's the DRAGONS!
How I'll have to survive before book 3, I don't know...

This was an amazing book from beginning to end. The world building in Remnants of a Scarlet Flame was phenomenal and Embers Rising was no different. All of the descriptions were so thorough without becoming overwhelming in detail - I was able to vividly picture all of the different locations throughout the book.
It did take me a minute to remember all of the characters from the first book but I quickly got them sorted and became fully immersed in their stories once again. It felt like each one of them was the main character and I was equally excited to get to each of their individual chapters in turn. All of the new characters that were introduced in Embers Rising were unique and wonderful as well.
Anyone who loves a great high fantasy read is sure to love this book. I'm anxiously awaiting the next one!

If I could give this book more than 5 stars I would.
This book dominated my thoughts from the first page. Everything that we had gone through in book one, and the stakes were still climbing...and climbing..
I absolutely loved book one. I compared Cindy's writing style to that of Patrick Rothfuss, but in this one her authir voice has just grown in leaps and bounds. This beautiful intricate world, with these flawed and beautiful charecters is so immersive.
I also want to mention Cindy's ability to thread that careful balance between hard hitting world changing suspense and pain with sweet, feet kicking moments.
I cried, I swore, I giggled and I gushed. And then immediately wished I had book 3!

An epic high fantasy with very detailed characters and world building. Political and personal twists and turns . The characters bring you in andake you feel what they feel. The whole series is a must read for fantasy lovers.

I would say that is all, but it's not even scratching the surface - this book is so.damn.brilliant!
It took me a second to remember who was who and what had gone down in Book 1, but then I was falling for the characters all over again, hooked on the story and breadcrumbs and all the twists and turns.
Character arcs are *chef's kiss* and I absolutely love that some are darker than others (that's all I can say because spoilers!). The banter, the friendships, the betrayals, the world building, the writing... sigh. I want to be like Sell when I grow up.
It's official: Sell is an autobuy for me (ha, that wasn't on purpose, but it made me giggle).
If you enjoy epic fantasy and a touch of romance without it going full romantasy/spice, I highly highly recommend this book (and Book 1 obvs bc that one is brilliant too).

This book builds in intensity right from the beginning, picking up from the last book well. Sell masterfully handles all her characters making each story arc just as thrilling as all the others. This is a fantastic dark fantasy series that I highly recommend.

This sequel raised the stakes. Embers Rising takes everything powerful about book one and builds on it with more magic, more tension, deeper character arcs, and some real emotional punches.
Daeya is still front and center, navigating exile, fighting for her family, and learning to harness a power that others would kill to control. She’s grown a lot in this book. You can feel her strength and see the ways she is still grappling with the cost of that power. It makes her feel both fierce and real.
I really enjoyed the multiple POVs which added so much depth. Seeing the story unfold through different eyes gave weight to the decisions being made and really let the emotional layers shine. It was a smart move that paid off.
The returning characters still shine. We meet new allies, deal with some major betrayals, and feel the web of power closing in. Some moments genuinely surprised me and when the dragons made their appearance, it was the kind of reveal that gives you chills. It hit hard in the best way.
Pacing-wise, this one feels like a step up. It’s a long book, but it moves. You get moments of heart-pounding action and then slower, more emotional beats that give you space to breathe. There were a few slower chapters in the middle where I felt myself easing off the gas a bit, but it picked right back up and kept my attention to the end.
The world-building expands beautifully. I loved getting more insight into the pantheon and how those godlike forces influence everything beneath them. You can feel the weight of history in the decisions characters make. It never feels like info-dumping, just more layers being added in a really organic way.
All in all, Embers Rising delivers! It's an intense, emotional, and beautifully crafted second installment. If you liked the first book, this one will absolutely pull you deeper. If you haven’t started the series yet, now is a great time to dive in.

Embers Rising is the second installment in The Last Draegion Saga, an epic fantasy that’s reminiscent of Lord of the Rings meets Ferngully meets Avatar.
We pick up right where book one ends, but I’ll admit it took me a few chapters to get back on my feet since the first book released about a year ago. *I would highly recommend a reread/reskim before diving into this book, if you can because it’s a complex world and magic system with equally complex multiple plot arcs.* Embers continues to follow our ragtag group of refugees and a few enemies while adding in a ton of new characters to the chaos that is war. Some you’ll love. Some you’ll hate. And some will leave you wondering if you’ve got it all wrong about the reasons behind this conflict. Personally, I think I met a few who are going to be my favorites more than even Dæya and Ravlok were for me in book one.
I thoroughly enjoyed the emotional rollercoaster that Embers Rising put me through. Cindy had me constantly coming up with new theories, revising other theories, and then throwing some right out the window to start the process all over again as I tried to piece the different puzzle pieces together.
Watching characters such as Dæya, Ravlok, Orowen, and a few others grow and stop shrinking themselves to fit some asinine version of who they thought they were had me cheering them on page after page. And I think I’m the most impressed with Ravlok—learning to be Dæya’s bookkeeper while somehow also being the glue holding so many together including himself when the doubts crept in? My guy deserves a full expenses paid vacation after this is all said and done.
Hallelujah! We finally get some real on page romance! It’s definitely the subplot here, and I’m okay with that. But I’m a romance girlie at heart, regardless of the genre, so I’m glad to see some relationships blossoming in this book.
Embers Rising was such a wild ride, and while the last two chapters left me wanting to hurl my kindle across the room (how could you do that to me, Cindy?!?)—I thoroughly enjoyed this book from cover to cover. I can’t wait to dive into the next book (coming 2026).

When I first started reviewing ARCs, Remnants of a Scarlet Flame was an early read that blew my mind. It was one of my top 5 books last year, so of course, I was excited to read Embers Rising when it was announced.
Still, there was some apprehension there. As with all series, sometimes things start going off the rails. Cindy L. Sell has trapped lighting in a bottle for a second time here.
Embers Rising is a worthy successor to Remnants. From the outset, the prose is great, and the story flows well. The characters are complex and believable and, at many times, exude enough charm that the story doesn’t get bogged down under its own weight.
Sell’s ability to slowly build suspense and expert use of dramatic irony makes Embers Rising a page turner. She’s a master of the eb and flow of tension and stakes as things very quickly move toward world ending threats, but she’s not afraid to give her characters reprieves. These moments of calm accentuate the looming danger that permeates the series.
The Last Draegion Saga has proved itself to be one of the greats so far, and I’m looking forward to the next one.

As a romance lover, I also really enjoyed the relationship developments.
I’m lucky enough to also have an ARC of Cindy’s connected standalone, Tipori, and can’t wait to dive back into this world and Cindy’s writing.

"I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.” Ember Rising is a brilliant follow up of the series. The first book, Remnants of a Scarlet Dream, was already stunning, and this one feels like the cherry on top. The world continues to expand, painting vivid scenes of every new location we encounter. We also get deeper insights into the magic system, which adds even more depth to the story.
This book picks up right where Book 1 left off, following Daeya and her crew on their journey to Starlight amidst the chaos of war. But upon arriving, Daeya is met with mixed reactions. The terms for her to stay are far from what she expected. Now, she must choose: stay and prove herself to the Aliaansi to earn their trust, or return to the Gild—the very people who betrayed her. All the while, she’s also on a mission to find and bond with a dragon, a creature most in Dessos believe to be extinct.
I can’t wait to read Part 3. These books completely pull you in—you just want to keep turning the pages, hungry for more. 💛

the sequel to remnants have all the parts i loved from the first book: great narration, interesting and complex world building and magic system, characters you both care and root for and ones you want to see die! it’s less gruesome than the first (which i rather prefer), the plot moves smoothly and the multiple points of views serves to give the reader a good understanding of different plot lines while not giving all the answers.
basically, it’s very very good, i thoroughly enjoyed it, and have theories for the next one, which i am definitely excited for!

What a wonderful, slow build to a can’t-put-this-book-down finish! The beginning chapters provide a nice reaquaintance with the main characters while gradually developing the new threads and characters making this novel very hearty and satisfying. No spoilers here - this is a worthy follow up to the author’s first book. I highly recommend committing to this series. I can’t wait for book 3!

Everything I've come to expect from Sell. the sequal is even more gripping than her debut. The action even bigger, the adventure more harrowing, the characters still loveable, still relatable.
This is the action/adventure novel I've been hunting all year for. Every character is distinct and on their own journey that weaves into the larger story masterfully.
The foreshadowing is subtle at times, making the twists and turns grander when you happen upon them.
The romance she's worked into these stories is well done, and doesn't overshadow the character's whole story, it adds to it while remaining a subplot - exactly what I wanted (needed if we're being honest). Not overshadowing the world ending possibilities, but giving the characters more reasons to fight to save themselves and their way of life, it's balanced perfectly, imo. High stakes launched even higher.
Sell truely is a master of her craft, and is quickly becoming one of my favourite authors.

When I first started Embers Rising I wasn’t sure I was going to like it. There were a lot of characters and a few view points. I am glad I stuck with it because around a third of the way through I grew to love Daeya and found myself rooting for her. I really loved the character development the more I read. I grew to hate Gregory, and worry about Gwen. I even wanted to kick Normos in the shin. How could he?! Every part of the story drew me in the farther I got. By the end I was right there with them while they fought their battles. I say that this book was 1000% worth it! It you find yourself tho you don’t want to finish it, you have to! Just stick it out because all of the love, comraderie, and just desserts are definitely going to knock your socks off!

This is an epic fantasy with a complex world building.
This is book 2 of the last draegion series. If you haven’t read the first, please stop here and go read Remnants of a scarlet flame.
*I would strongly advise reading both of them close together or to keep notes because I am not lying when I say it’s a complex world.
There are less quests in this book. It really focuses on the development of many characters. We (along with them honestly) are learning about their past, who they are and how they got there. There is a lot of growth for them. It’s still multiple POV and we are adding more characters.
I really loved the story and can’t wait to know what will happen next!

An absolutely GREAT follow on from the first in the series. Once you fall into the writing you’re absolutely transported into this world. It’s carved out so fully I don’t see how you can’t be sucked in.
The found family builds so much more in this one and I’m here for it. The individual stories all tie together so well, and in a way that it all furthers the main plot. I feel like there’s depth to every single character.
So excited to learn more about Telerion as well. Hello? Dragons? A weakness.
I’m desperate to have book three in my hands. For now I’ll settle for the spin-off hehe.

Such an amazing book. I love this world and these characters. I had moments where I was on the edge of my seat and wanting to cry because I didn't know what was gonna happen to them. This book is action packed, multiple perspectives, magic, strong characters and strong world building. If you're looking for a great fantasy read this is the one for you.

Ok so we pick up right where the last book ends, at the beginning of a war, a war between people, a war between gods and goddesses. And there are so many twists and turns and still mysteries and secrets surround almost all our characters.
We do find out why Normas Beck hates Daeya so much. Apparently she ratted Normas out for his love of (not giving it away might spoil the book) and he never forgave her for it. Even though she was young impressionable and probably never even figured out what it did and meant to him to loose that love.
We also find out just how far Gregory’s tor - ture, treachery, and treason actually goes, but everyone is so afraid of him and the powerful people he has accumulated that no one will go against him. And those that do often find themselves eliminated, as past examples has shown us. He is a bad man who definitely doesn’t deserve a redemption arc (and hopefully he never gets one - honestly hope someone puts him and his minions out to pasture for good soon. (I’ll come back to update this paragraph and hopefully by end of book there will be some good news for all on this front)
And Orowen has decided to become a Martyr and there are even more mysteries surrounding what happened. Thankfully she has friends who will fight for her even when she won’t.
This book easily could have been broken up. And with all the political council meetings, it makes it feel long as well. Reminds me of that political talking scene is star wars.
I don’t blame Daeya for any of her actions she is a 16 year old girl with hormones, unlocked potential, and been abuse and fed propaganda since she was born.
Closed door romance (btwn 2 consenting people of the same age)
There is a lot that happens in this book, I think the intro to the dragon court and the history of the last dragon wielder could have ben a lovely novella between the 2 novels.
And even though the gods and goddesses said they would play no favourites, they absolutely have all their hands in the peoples (high ranking councillors) cookies jars

Embers Rising is the second book in Sell's The Last Draegion Saga. This fantasy picks up where the story left off in Remnants of a Scarlet Flame. It includes multiple, interconnected storylines.
After Daeya is falsely accused of treason, she knows she cannot return home but she worries for her family. She ends up turning to her enemies for help - the Syljians. She puts her trust in Alar, her former mentee who promises that her family will be extracted and brought to safety as soon as they get to Starlight and the Aliaansi. While on the journey, Daeya seems to forge a connection with a dragon named Telerion, Prince of the Golden Court. She is determined to find him after she secures her family's future. Unfortunately Alar was not in a position to speak for the Aliaansi leaders and trust must be earned.
Magnus, one of the newest leaders, has not been quite right since he was tortured and left for dead in the Guild's dungeons. After all he endured, hearing a voice in his head might not be so unexpected however the voice appears to be influencing both his behavior and his decisions in manners quite atypical from the formerly peaceful individual. While the voice continues to convey that Daeya is a threat, Magnus endeavors to keep her powerless.
Knowing that war is imminent and all saphyrum will be directed to the war efforts, Councilor Shei-Gwen Mar-Pol uses her influence to covertly remove a few barrels from the Guild's stores to ensure the healers don't go without. As fate would have it, Councilor Lucius Gregory Duerwisti's right hand, Normos Beck catches Shei-Gwen's partner Olivia with the stolen barrels as well as performing unauthorized magic. She should be destined for the gallows but perhaps something can be worked out.
Gregory has not diverted course. He is adamant not only about war, where he intends to eradicate the Aliaansi, but also to get Daeya back, by any means necessary.
And there is lots more! Like the first book, there is much going on, and yet this is only the beginning. With the promise of two more releases in this series, there is far more to come.
