This taught me some new words (eg, lordosis: abnormal curvature of the spine forward), and Rogin's various techniques and jokes made it a page-turner, but no plans for a re-read.
IMHO, not a "dazzling" "novel of the first importance.", as Sissman described, his Oct 31, 1971 NYT review.

Notes:
33: Use "?", as a notation that match date and/or place is uncertain.
This described my dad, a former Marine DI:
70: dad rowed vigorously, perhaps to show that at seventy he still had plenty of jism.
142: "Father was erect. Bearing was one of his obsessions, as though on a parade ground.
Excerpt from a Boswell letter:
184: "speculation renders us miserable. Life will not bear to be calmly considered. It appears insipid and ridiculous as a country dance."
177: elderly, shuffling guides in cathedrals that you can't shake off.
