Focuses on the trial of the abolitionist who was hanged for treason and murder following his attempt to capture a military arsenal and arm the slaves for revolt
Really great story. It kept me interested the whole time and is really great for people who love history, law, and politics (like me) But something I must say before you check this out is that it’s subject is slavery. Don’t expect this to be an average criminal; John Brown is a person trying to end slavery in radical ways, way before civil war started. I don’t want to spoil it so I will keep my mouth shut but just remember it’s a book about slavery that starts a little before the Mexican War. I wish it had more figurative language tbh. For a book about someone for a while ago, I thought there would be more words I would have to look up from not knowing them, but surely not. I believe it’s because this book is more targeted for 7th graders. Anyways, I recommend it only for people that are into this subject/genre.
Interesting surface level historical recounting of the raid on Harper’s ferry and the man at the center of it, John brown, one of our country’s greatest heroes
Since my 7th graders are going to be learning about John Brown and deciding whether he was a terrorist or a martyr I decided to sharpen up my knowledge of John Brown. As I was reading this on a plane to Atlanta the man next to me asked me "Who is that?" Obviously he didn't have good history teachers, but it turns out he went to school in Illinois and Missouri. Maybe teachers there think John Brown was a terrorist! Maybe, I do to! Read this and find out!
Again I somehow managed to buy a book meant for middle school students. Still, a decent, fair telling of John Brown and his misguided efforts to end slavery.
