Lily and her family are invited to the Duke's house for two weeks for a gathering, other prominent families in the area are invited as well. On the first night, Lily tries to sneak out of the party to see the Duke's art collection and then she's grabbed in the dark, turned around and kissed passionately. Obviously, this might be considered assault if it wasn't because she started enjoying it and kissing him back.

That's how the story starts.

There is something very comforting about reading romanc
DNF after chapter 6.

This is garbage. If I could rate this zero stars, I really would. It was honestly that bad.

There are two big things that keep me reading:
1) Author's writing technique
2) Good characters that I can make a connection with

Lily and the Duke failed my criteria and then some. Terrible writing is what honestly kills a book for me the fastest. Not to mention that her characters were complete idiots and sex crazed with nothing in their mind other than how many times they can squeeze in

I enjoyed the story very much. The characters were likable and it had a satisfying conclusion. My big problem is that the book seemed to be written in language that was too contemporary. I don't think the author did enough work on historical accuracy.

Challenged to read a "bodice ripper", I picked this one based on the description, and it's terrible. Just horrible. It's like if aliens tried to write a book about people, or an AI tried to write a romance novel. The characters are flat and dimensionless, and as far as the "bodice ripping", the author can't decide whether to be vague ("debauch" and such) or cringe-worthily specific. I was going to try to slog through all the way to the end, but I've been told it only gets worse. I can't imagine ...more

Stars: 5

Overall: Lily and her family are going to The Lybrook estate for 2 week long house gathering. Lily's only interest is to paint and to view the Duke's art because he is suppose to have some famous paintings. Her mother and father on the other hand are hoping that Lily will change her mind about marriage and meet someone. The first night there the family attends the ball and just when Lily sneaks off in search of the art gallery, she is pulled into a shadowy corner and a man starts to kiss

Wow! I read this in a day! (yep fast reader) And this book was amazing. So sweet & sexy. I fell in love immediately with Lily n Duke. Never read a romance set in the late 1800s and suggest it to everyone.

Spoilers ahead:. Really? I liked the first half of the book. A little far fetched, but whatever..
For me,, it was DNF at 54%. The heroine pitches a fit because her lover, the Duke, who was her first lover, arranges to marry her, making a deal with her with her father. It was just stupid.

DNF Chapter 3.

This is confirmed, I am in a book slum. 4 DNF books back to back, I am starting to feel pathetic about myself.

Flat wooden characters, unbelievable plot, cringe worthy dialogue...sorry I didn't enjoy the book at all....
This book was a great quick read, it is fun and romantic as well as an easy read. Based in the past where a woman has little to no power in shaping her own future.

The main character is Lily, we meet her first when she is a child in the Duke's home painting, he asks for her to return when she is older. And so she does eight years later as an adult looking to start her season with her father urging her to find a husband. She meets the Duke again as she tries to seek a peak at some of the artwork
Thanks to Team Wild who gave me this book in exchange of an honest review. I'm usually not a fan of history romance. I couldn't put this book down read it in 2 days. After I finished it I couldn't wait into getting into the next book.

I love Lily with all her spunk and how she goes after what she wants. She meets the Duke at a young age. Years later they both haven't forgotten about the other. I loved how Lily kept calling Amelia Amanda lol. I was so happy someone finally smacked her. Amelia tri

Helen Hardt has fast become one of my favorite authors, and rightly so with writing books such as, Lily and the Duke.
Lily and Daniel's story was epically one for the books, literally...
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and am looking forward to Rose in Bloom, next. I no doubt give this book 5 amazing stars.

I will say the beginning didn't have that much build up between the 2 main characters. Amelia is one major character with issues and totally shocking with what happens with Lily.

You know when you find an absolute gem of a read that stays with you, days after you've finished it. This book is that gem. I fell in love with 'Lily and the Duke' from the offset and got so absorbed in to it, my world fell away from me; everything ceased to exist apart from this book. I felt as though I was living in 1845, and experiencing what Lady Lily and co were experiencing.

Lady Lily is a stunning, fire-cracker of a woman who would rather paint or wri

This book surprised me!! My book club picked this book to read and honestly I was so scared to read it with it being somewhat Historical Romance. I'd actually never read one that I enjoyed! Needless to say Helen Hardt has opened me up to the magical world of
Erotic Historical Romances!
I am pleased to say Lily and Daniel's story is one that I feel I could relate to easily and without any regret of doing so. I can not believe I waited so long to pick this book up! The character that I liked most

Finished this book in one day (really one morning to be specific) I have not read many historical romances and I haven't really gotten into any of the books in that genre until this book. One of the first historical romances that I truly enjoyed reading. It was true to it's era without being confusing, which I usually find when I read historical romances. I thought the love story was wonderful & although slow at the beginning, things sped up & got heated quickly. Now I am glad I found ou ...more

If you’ve never read a historical romance start here.

I loved the family dynamic in this story, they are all lovingly stubborn. This book is wonderful, it has Lily who is a strong-willed female character who in her time is quite the rebellion. She does not want the arranged marriage or the courting or to be put out for the “season”, to be put on display as one would look at pork chops at the meat market as she refers to it. She wants to travel the world, she loves to paint and write about everyt

My Opinion on Lily and the Duke

This is my first experience reading a Helen Hardt novel. It was such a treat! I didn’t know what to expect as my friend, Wendy, has been practically begging me to read her for a long time. I have downloaded her books before, but this is the first one I actually cracked. I wish I would have read her works sooner! Her writing is engaging and wonderful. I just couldn’t put this book down.

Lily is my kind of character. She is spunky, smart, and independent. She jus

Lily and the Duke is an enticing story about a young woman in England during a time when woman were not intended to be their own person. However that is exactly what Lady Lily Jameson is. She has no time for the traditions of her time and wants to be free. She enjoys art and exploring and seeing all the world has to offer. Daniel Fransworth never imagined he would be sitting in the position to become the duke of Lybrook. However due to the sudden loss of his brother and father he is thrown head ...more

Historical romances are usually not my thing i got this book through my book club and honestly was dreading it as they are usually stiff and not much fun to read. Oh boy did this author change my mind on that score and now i can't wait to read the rest of the series. Lily is a funny spunky woman who you immediately fall in love with. And Daniel the duke makes you question him at first then he captures your heart. The two wi

This book is amazing! This series is the best historical romance series I've read.

Lily Jameson is a strong willed daughter of an earl. She and her family have been invited to a 2 week house party at the Duke's estate. Daniel is a second son and has just been thrust into the Duke role after an untimely death of his father and brother, the intended heir. He now not only has to learn to be duke without the guidance of his father but mourn the death of his father and brother. Daniel has always had

I was excited to read this. Author has great reviews and being a historical romance I was looking forward to an afternoon read and relaxation. The beginning was decent. I liked Lily's story and family, the setting seemed good. Everyone loves a party and scandal right? LOL. So then once Lily and the duke met it turned into an erotic novel. Sex here, sex there, sex everywhere and who cares about using the right head and using protection eh? It just turns into cheesy sex scenes and I was bored. The ...more

I received this book for a review.

Lily is like every girl I know these days. Independent, smart, confident, and very set in her ways. She has no interest in getting married but that is exactly why she is here. To be paraded in front of all of the eligible bachelors to see which one will want to marry her. Though, sh what no idea.
Daniel has just come into his title and has a need for a bride. See, he needs an heir to his title, Duke of Lybrook. He has been somewhat of a scoundrel and no one wan

Daniel never expected to become the Duke - but after his brother and fathers death - he now has responsiblities he was never expectedto have therefore he isnt prepared to take care of them. He remembers Lily from when she was a child - and is unprepared for the emotions she causes in him. They have a very steamy - and qick - courtship / relations ...more

It's been a long time since I read a historical time-period romance book. As soon as I read first chapter, I was drawn back in time. Lily intrigued me with her adamant opinions. I couldn't figure out if I liked Lily or her sister Rose more. The setting that this book described, I want to know if I can visit! This beautiful castle and grounds sounds like something out of a fairy tale. The sexual chemistry between Daniel and Lily had me fanning myself, so hot! I guarantee this is most definitely n ...more

Love sneaks up on you

Lily and the Duke was an enchanting, funny and very sexy read. I love historical romance in not sure why it's taken me so long to read this.
Lady Lily Jameson is a spirited beauty who loves to paint and write. Lily knows her own mind and is in no hurry to marry.
Daniel Lybrook, the seventh Duke of Lybrook, never expected to be duke but losing his father and his brother last year propelled him into the position. He has been dreading this house party, it was meant as his introd
