This is the third book in a series, taking on the billionaire and bodyguard trope. It's very much a fluffy story and tries to focus more on a heartwarming family theme. This did stand alone but it might be informative to read the first two books in the series, which I did not. I think that some romantic buildup for this couple may have happened in those stories. The chapters have alternating POV's from Hilton, the wealthy businessman and Cathal, his head of security. Secondary characters include Cathal's niece and nephews and returning characters, Herb and Chuck.

The narrative was simply written but transitions between scenes weren't always smooth. Hilton and Cathal have worked together for five years, but in the first two chapters, they seem to have little insight about each other. Yet within a day or two of Hilton coming to help Cathal, they decide they are in a relationship and in bed. There was no buildup or sexual tension, and I sensed little strong emotion or passion. I also couldn't find any logical basis for Cathal not speaking to his father or family for 25 years. There were some other plot points, like Zinnia, the "won't take gay for an answer" woman, Jonas the CIA agent, and even the supposed mystery of Hilton's parents, that had little or no relevance to the overall story. I saw the characterizations as far too thin, given little depth or dimension, even for the MC's and particularly the children. I've never seen teens, or small children so amenable and well behaved.

Still, I read through it easily enough as it didn't demand emotional investment and contained no angst. If a light, contemporary novel offering complete escape from any realism and happy endings all around is what you need, this might fit the bill for you.

On The Fence

I have very strong feelings about this book, in both directions. Some of the things I hate, I'm on the fence about hating and ditto for some of the things I loved. In a couple of instances, there were things I loved and hated at the same time, because, you know, there's a thin line and all that. Plus, I never, EVER seem to be able to do things the easy way.

love-hate~~~~~the hard easy way

So I'll try to be coherently concise. Okay, no. That never happens, so I'll settle for an attempt at linear, if you will. I hated the title of this book. Yes, I realize it's a part of the Why I Love... series, but still. It sucks. Hilton doesn't love bodyguards, plural, he loves his bodyguard. So I think the series title is ill-conceived because it makes the individual book titles awkward. Also, what is up with the cover? One non-verbal response coming right up: Ugh.

On the other hand, I love the characters' names in this one. I don't think I have ever read a book where the character was named 'Cathal' before, and Hilton's name fit somehow without coming across as pretentious. That's an amazing feat because let's face it, 'Hilton' could be construed as being pretty stinking pretentious, but not once did I think of Paris Hilton or any other Hilton for that matter, thank the gods! I also enjoyed that Cathal and Hilton were extremely invested in each other despite keeping their distance. These guys have known each other and worked closely together for 5 years. They were mutually attracted all that time and equally unwilling to act on that attraction. They both contributed to the emotional walls and boundaries constructed between them.

quote-love-stubborn

While it wasn't fully realized because there was some judgment there, yes, and some misconceptions, sure, I think these guys came pretty close to being unconditionally in love with each other before they ever touched intimately. I really liked the fact that instead of using their preconceptions and misjudgments to propel some unnecessary drama, the author let it go. There are already too many idiotic, stubborn miscommunication tropes out there. Did I say idiotic and stubborn? Good. It bears repeating. Thankfully, Cathal and Hilton were neither. It was for those reasons I didn't mind the relatively fast pacing of their dual epiphanies and the turnaround in their relationship dynamic. They'd known each other long enough that it made sense given the circumstances.

smart guys

The niggles: Cockblocking. I hate it in real life. I hate it when it invades my fantasies. I hate it when it invades my potential spank material. I just hate it. Period. This is why I generally don't like books that feature children as heavily as this one did. I get it, I really do. This book was, after all, a card-carrying member of the caring-for-others'-kids-after-tragedy and the useless-deadbeat-sibling theme clubs. But my gods! Did there absolutely have to be so many of them? Did they have to be so front and center in the story? Could we not have somehow evaded the rampant cockblocking? Ack! Thbbft!

ack!thbbft

The effects the children had on Cathal's and Hilton's lives individually and as a couple were very realistic. I'm a parent, so I know what those dusty-cooch-'cuz-of-the-kids days were like. That does not, however, mean I like for kids to invade romance novels/erotica reads. As a reader, and purely as a reader, I wish the author would have found some way to give them some dedicated alone time as a couple, even if it was just for 24 hours or a couple of days, before the progeny took over their lives. Talk about a mood-killer.

It was my worst nightmare. I mean, the plot basically emasculated a hot bodyguard and an equally hot billionaire good guy! Cathal and Hilton had five years of pent up, unfulfilled sexual tension that they should have been able to act on in an explosive, balls-emptying, hot and smexy fun ~whimpers~ kind of way. The fact that Cathal and Hilton couldn't have about a week's worth of crazy-hot monkey-sex everywhere when they finally got their heads on straight about each other literally made me wanna cry.

So this one gets plot points for realism and believability but loses some major heat cred in the steam arena due to rampant (if rationally understandable) cockblocking. That's why I'm on the fence. That is, after all, what the story was about from the beginning, but books are my escape. I don't need children chasing me into my head too unless it's in small doses. This was like a BIG GULP. I get it, but I don't have to like it. Or condone it. Or want it to continue. Like, ever.

That said, I would recommend this book. It was sweet, there was decent development as it pertained to the emotional aspects of the MCs relationship, and while they weren't earth shattering, the sex scenes were adequate. I won't beat a dead horse and reiterate how they could have been better! I enjoyed it, but there won't be any backtracking for me and probably no further installments of this series either. I've read better. I gave it 3.5 stars on Gay Book Reviews, but since GR doesn't do halfsies, I gave it 4 stars here because aside from my personal objections to aspects of the story, it was a good read and didn't deserve a smackdown. So I rounded up.

Another fun installment of this series! This time Burke and McKinley finally give in to their mutual attraction and deep friendship and caring for each other. Cathal is called home when his father is ill and can no longer care for the 4 children of Cathal's drug addicted sister. Burke does everything in his power to make it easier on Cathal. Then he arrives to assist.

Loved the kids in this one especially! And of course Herb and Chuck are the best comic relief ever :)

This is a great series to read when you're in the mood for something fun with some conflict and drama and a happy ending.

2.5* it's an okay read for me.

The bodyguard… I didn't see him doing much about his job. He left his work place in the very beginning of the book. The plot has nothing to do with a bodyguard. The story would work fine if the MC were a cook, a librarian, or a shop keeper.
It was said that both MCs were attracted to each other since a couple of years. But I didn't see much sexual tension between the two. Moreover, the MCs played around, joked and fucked on the same day after the dad of that bodyguard MC died! Since I have read this book without reading the previous books, I think I may have missed something. So I started to read book 1.

I was given a copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.

This is a toothache sweet romance. The relationship between Hilton, a billionaire CEO and Cathal, his head of security is pure fantasy fiction - until Cathal has to return home to Montana to deal with family drama. From that point on we get a little bit of angst and a whole lot of domestic bliss.

The connection between Cathal and Hilton has been five years in the making but somehow, this still feels like instalove as the two men move from flirtation to coparenting in the space of a few days. As with all billionaire romances, this story pushes the boundaries of plausibility as Hilton manages to drop everything in New York to be with Cathal in Montana. To a British reader, Hilton’s British background isn’t terribly convincing and I found the inconsistencies irritating. Cathal’s family situation is heartbreaking but everything is more domestic than sexy.

For me, the domestic part of the story was a complete turnoff. As soon as Cathal and Hilton start to figure things out together, they are surrounded by four children. Sure, the kids are cute and the men’s domestic experiences are realistic but I don’t read billionaire romances for realism. Cathal and Hilton sneak around like teenagers - or parents - having muffled sex before immediately pulling sweats on so small children can get into bed with them. Not sexy. Not at all sexy.

TA Chase was one of the first authors to get me hooked on m/m romance but this is the first of her books that I’ve read in some time. As a fan, I was surprised by the choppy ‘tell not show’ writing style and frustrated with some grammatical errors that I hope will be fixed before the final release date.

This book is the third book in the Why I Love series, but can be read as a standalone.

Hilton Burke is one of the most powerful men in the world and also one of the loneliest. He has a not so secret crush on his head of security, Cathal McKinley. Cathal not so secretly returns that crush. Both men are afraid to make a move until a call from home sends Cathal back to last place he wants to go....Sunset, Montana.

Hilton will step up and come through for Cathal and his family in ways no one ever has before. Soon these two will stop dancing around what's been right in front of them all along. Two men without families will walk into a ready made one and learn that home may just be wherever the other is.

This was such a good read, the main characters are good men, who do the right thing, but still have some edge to them. The kids in this book come off realistic and fleshed out, which I always enjoy. There is heart and humor and a sense of sometimes you really can go home again!

I really enjoyed this book. Cathal and Hilton have liked each other from afar for years and when Cathal has to leave town to tend to his sick dad Hilton bends over backwards to make sure he has everything he might need. I loved the kids in the book and I loved how Hilton just did everything he could for Cathal without being too over the top since he has a ton of money. When Hilton and Cathal are in the Walmart I was laughing so hard. I can imagine the looks he was getting never having been in a Walmart before. These two guys are perfect together and they worked so well and just meshed together like peanut butter and jelly. I enjoyed the story and read it all in one day.

~~I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads ~~

This is part of a series with linked titles, but reads well as a standalone too.

This romance involves two very independent, intelligent and straight forward men. At least they are that in all except their deep and long standing attraction for each other. They have been avoiding all closeness and familiarity for five years. Suddenly, due to Cathal having to return to his hometown to help his sick father, and they can't get wait to admit their feelings to each other. Maybe this is because for the first time ever, Cathal actually needs something that Hilton can provide, or whether Cathal's demeanour indicates it would be accepted, isn't really clear. Whatever the reason, they then fall headlong into domesticity, with a side serving of passion, when there is a moment.

I found I was trying to justify how they could undergo such a dramatic change of pace so quickly and decided that maybe as older guys, they realised that this was the time to settle down, but it was a bit stilted for me. Even with the unexpected level of understanding from Cathal's father, and the discovery of who caused Hilton's parents' air crash, it was precipitous. And whilst Hilton's money could solve anything, I am not sure that a bodyguard can really work from such a distance effectively, but it gave us the chance to watch the family traumas be resolved.

A more gritty than fairytale romance, with a lot of side issues which muddy the water, but result in an HEA for the whole McKinley-Burke clan.

My Favorite of the Three

Out of the three books in this series, this is the one I like the most. I didn't LOVE it but it was good.

If you've read the forst book then you know about Hilton, the owner or a large international company, and Cathal, the head of Hilton's security. They have crazy sexual tension but pretend that they kind of don't get along. Herb from book one is always trying to get them together because he knows they're perfect for one another. So, this is Hilton and Cathal's book.

Cathal's been called home to take care of his drug addict sister's four children because Cathal's father, who was raising them, is dying. Cathal is the children's guardian but he hasn't been home in over 10 years. This is the story of him going home, becoming a parent to the kids, admitting that he's in love with Hilton, reconciling with his father, and forming a family with Hilton and the kids.

I really liked these guys. They were sweet. I mean, yeah, that pretty much sums it up. What made the book for me was actually the kids. They were pretty awesome. Especially the six year old twins who were rambunctious and mischevious. I liked how easily the group formed a family. It was just all very....sweet.

This is not masterpiece but it's a nice way to while away a few hours.

After having just read a serial killer novel, I was looking for something lighter and this happily filled the bill. This is Cathel and Hilton's story - the body guard and the billionaire ( I know one one of my resolutions was never to read "Billionaire" novels, but it wasn't in the title so cut me some slack) anyway this was just what I wanted, pure romance no bloody bodies. 3.5 stars

I've been waiting for Hilton and Cathal's story since Why I Love Geeks where we first met them and see them tiptoeing around each other.
I have to say this is my favorite of the three books but each is so cute and fun. perfect reads when you need a pick me up and a sweet fluffy romance.
Why I love Bodyguards does have Cathal off the job and going back home to Montana where his father is dying. His father has adopted four of Cathals sisters kids and Cathal's sister is a drug head and prostitute. The story is mostly about Cathal dealing with the death of his father and Hilton h=getting closure with the death of his parents even though that happened when he was like ten. It is mostly romance with little tension.
I loved all the characters especially getting to know Hilton better since I am no fan of the billionaire books but he is not stuffy. I wouldn't say it a Billionaire bodyguard trope as Cathal isn't doing much work in this book as Hilton's bodyguard ' more an office romance, friends to lovers type thing in my opinion. The kids are adorable especially the twins and I loved getting a little bit of Herb in here as he adds a lot of humor to lighten the sadness of the story.

My one issue is that the blurb had a jilted lover showing up and I expected some good tension or a secondary plot but Zinnia wasn't what I expected and I felt that could have been easily left out as it added nothing to the story.

If you are looking for a light, fun, very sweet read, like bodyguards, billionaires, cute kids and a very good romance you will like this.

I am so glad that Hilton and Cathal got their own book. I fell hard for these two in " Why I love Geeks". In that book you could feel the chemistry between these two so much that it was bleeding off he pages.

Cathal and Hilton both fought their attraction for one another. Both was scared to approach the other because they was both worried about rejection or ruining their friendship and working relationship. But when Cathal has a family crisis back in Montana Cathal did not think twice about jumping on a plane and heading out to help him. This was a turning point for these two men.

Cathal knew when he left to go to Montana that his father was dying and that he was about to become a dad to his four nieces and nephews. He never figured that Hilton would want any part of it but he was truly blown away when Hilton walked into his childhood home and fit perfectly with everyone in it. Because of the things that Hilton had done for him and the kids, Cathal knew it was time too open up to Hilton about how he feels about him and let him in.

After doing so, things went both bad and good but through it all both men knew they had each other.

This was a good read. T.A. Chase is an amazing author and knows how to suck in the readers. This book was no different and I hope their will be another book in this series, cause it is an amazing series.

Needs a Grain of Salt

This one is so good in throwing everything up in the air and waiting for it all to fall over the place that you simply forget that you should be reading this with a very arched eyebrow and a very large grain (pillar?) of salt.

That's because both Cathal (first time I've ever seen that name) and Hilton are almost cardboard characters with readily defined histories and personalities that seem to be stitched together from a little of this (mid-30s each) and that (both big guys with extraordinary looks and builds) and everything else (read it and weep). Yet it works.

The reason it works is that the plot which brings them together is quite unbelievable. You could never imagine two men such as them putting everything aside in their lives to come together over a tragedy one suffers and the other one chooses to endure with him. And it works both ways.

The supporting cast goes a long, long way to fleshing out whatever credibility there might be to this book, and is one of the reasons that I read it straight through. There is a hint there might be a sequel to settle a revenge, but if not, it's still a good, diverting, read.

3.5 star review by Amber

Of all the three books I was looking forward to this one the most. Since book 1, I was so intrigued and interested in the Burke/McKinley dynamic. From book 1 you could feel the intense pull between the two. I immediately wanted to know what was behind it and where it came from. I needed to know who was the alpha, who controlled who in this relationship. What I found was, they were in essence, equals and I was ok with that, it made sense.

When we first met them in book 1, never shy Herb, let us know that there was some definite tension(of a sexual nature) between the two. We see that within the first few moments of this book. McKinley goes to his boss (Burke) to let him know he needs to take some personal time off to go back home to deal with his ailing father and druggie sisters 4 kids. You can tell immediately that these two want each other and you also get a sense that their feelings run deeper then just sex. Burke without hesitation agrees to letting Cathal take time off and makes him promise to contact him if he needs anything.

Once Cathal is back home he finds out his fathers condition is way worse then he originally thought. He reaches out to Burke, who again, drops everything for Cathal, and is on the next flight to be with him.

What follows is some petty family drama involving Cathal’s sister, a completely oblivious ex-girlfriend who seems to think she may still have a chance with Cathal, and the adorable shenanigans of twin boys.

Hilton and Burke dive head first into taking care of his niece and nephews, while falling more in love with each other. Even after the father dies, there bond continues to get stronger and that was very apparent.

I did enjoy this book more than the first two. It was well thought out, with a solid plot line that kept me interested throughout the book. I didn’t understand the CIA scene though. It seemed like it was just thrown in and made no sense.

Overall, this was a good book. I didn’t love it however and I really wanted to, especially after the first 2 being just ok. If you like super sweet love stories with little to no angst, then this series is for you.

3.5 Stars ~ Ever since I met Hilton Burke, CEO of Burke Pharmaceuticals, and Cathal McKinley, his head of security, in book one of the 'Why I Love' series, I've been waiting to get to their story. I mean, seriously, people, what could possibly be better than two very strong, stubborn alpha males? I couldn't wait to see how they finally dealt with all that sexual tension that just ignites whenever they're in the same room. Wow. *fanning myself*

I adored Hilton and Cathal from the moment I met them. Mainly because neither one of them could ever hide their fondness and exasperation with Herb. Since I adore Herb, well, there you have it. It was fun to watch these two men, who've been employer and employee, break out of those molds—a little at a time. When Hilton flies to Montana to help Cathal with his family problems, it brings a bit of a wall down, which enables them to interact in a way that's different from their norm. It also, finally, lets them admit to their mutual attraction, while getting to know each other on a different level.

Cathal's sister is a drug addict, and pretty much worthless. Luckily, Cathal has guardianship for each of her five children, although his dad has been caring for them. Now, his dad is dying and Cathal has to handle the backlash. Looks like Cathal and Hilton are going to become insta parents. *snort* I really loved how they came together to build a family, especially when neither of them ever thought they'd have that.

This book was just as good as I had hoped. In fact, it's my favorite of the series, so far. I really liked that this installment focused so much on family. Good job, TA Chase!

A Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words Review An Alisa Review:

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

This was another sweet story. While this is in the series and we see Chuck and Herb again this book had a very different feel than the previous ones did. There weren’t really outside forces affecting them in the story most of it had to do with Hilton and Cathal finally admitting and acting on their feelings.

Cathal and Hilton have spent years working together without actually letting the other know how they feel, even though Herb often comments on their actions. Cathal has spent his whole adult life believing that his father has hated him and gets the surprise of a lifetime when he goes back to his hometown to take responsibility for this sister’s kids when his father gets very sick and passes away. Hilton quickly follows and becomes the perfect partner and support for Cathal, surprising those around him.

Cathal has been hurting silently though a friend from high school keeps him up to date on what is happening in his family. He already knows a bit about the kids from a distance but Cathal’s father has prepared them for Cathal coming to be with them, they have been cast aside by their mother and now they are losing their grandfather as well; you can’t help but hurt for them as they go through this. I loved seeing Hilton really being the down to earth guy that he doesn’t really show to others, but he’ll get right into the mess with everyone else. It was great to see Chuck and Herb again and how they all interact with each other and the kids.

Cover art by Anne Cain is nice and I like the visuals of the characters but it didn’t call to me like the others in the series.

Billionaire Hilton Burke and his bodyguard Cathal McKinley have been at an emotional stalemate for five years. Neither man wants to be the first to reveal their true feelings. But a dire event prompts Hilton to assist Cathal in dealing with the issues as well as break down the barriers both men had erected around their hearts.

Why I Love Bodyguards is part of the Why I Love... series. The plot features poignantly realistic issues that test human strength as well as the spirit. The storyline highlights the loss of a parent, abandoned children along with drug addiction. Humor is inserted to alleviate some of the tearful moments throughout the plot. The characters are believable.

Hilton is a hardworking successful businessman. He constantly monitors his many corporations, as well as his bank accounts. Hilton does not trust easily. Previous love interest turned out to be men only looking to advance their careers, which is the main reason he refused to reveal his feelings for Cathal.

Cathal is well suited for his job as bodyguard, there is very little that escapes his keen intellect. He is even aware of Hilton’s affection for him. Nevertheless Cathal does not deem himself worthy of Hilton’s social status so he conceals his own love for Hilton.

T. A. Chase has created another enjoyable installment to this series. What I found especially fascinating is Hilton and Cathal are very much alike in personality. Both men are extremely compassionate, smart, stubborn and sensuous.

A Joyfully Jay review.

4 stars

I think that opposites attract situations are fun to read simply because the differences between the characters can vary so much and in Why I Love Bodyguards, we meet the insanely wealthy businessman, Hilton Burke, and his head of security, Cathal McKinley.

From the first chapter, we are let in on the secret that Cathal and Hilton are attracted to each other but refuse to deal with that attraction for all of the obvious, logical reasons. *rolls eyes* Cathal’s family issues are not beyond the realm of possibility and since we are already privy to Hilton’s feelings, his dropping almost everything to be at Cathal’s side made perfect sense.

To say there was tension in the story would be an understatement, whether it was between Cathal and Hilton, Cathal and his father, or Cathal and, well I think you get the point. Cathal is a tension magnet but since he does not create the situations, he retains the down-to-earth, capable, no-nonsense persona that we can’t help but love. Hilton shows himself to be a much more complex character than one would imagine. The rich man who can change a lock, cook, and so much more. Together, Cathal and Hilton made a formidable pair, but that alone is not a guarantee that a fledgling relationship and five kids could survive.

This was my favourite out of the 3 books in the series.

Hilton and Cathal have been wanting each other for ages. It is not till Cathal has to go home to look after his niece and 3 nephews and has to go home that things start heating up.

Cathal has not been home in a long time, but his father is dying, and he wants, and needs to be there. Hilton was amazing in the way he just dropped everything and just rushed to his side. He surprises Cathal with who he truly is as a person, not what the world sees. They work so well together, especially where the children are concerned.

The book has its sad parts with Cathal's dad, but that situation is handled with respect. Cathal's ex-girlfriend is downright pain in the bum. She keeps butting in and tries to worm her way into Cathal's life. I so loved it when she got her comupence.

Their first time together was just a big ball of pent-up energy, so it had to explode some way. The ending was so lovely. I was so happy we got some Herb moments. He always says what he thinks, but everyone still loves him, thought.

Underwhelming. It was great to finally see these two together, but I wasn't wowed. Most of the conflicts that are introduced fizzle out without any drama. A former colleague at the CIA threatens and tries to force Cathal to take a mercenary job , Cathal's druggy prostitute sister threatens to take her kids back , and there's a mystery surrounding Hilton's parents' death in a plane crash .

Also the twins are named Bucky and Buddy? I know their mother is a drug addict, but they sound like a pair of cartoon chipmunks.

Okay - I have read this whole series and I am sure I will continue to buy and read any more that may be published.

I think that the first one in the series was my fave, and this one would be #2. I love how Herb and Chuck from #1 are featured in it, and how there is a family aspect to it as well. It's definitely a comfort read series for me, and fairly entertaining despite being a bit far-fetched from reality.

Then again, I also love stories about shifters, insta-love, men who shed lots of tears, and a lot of other junk that gets ripped apart by other readers - so I guess it just comes down to the fact I am really easily entertained (and I love a happy ending!)

This was incredibly boring for me. I ended up skipping over huge chunks of the book. Nothing every really happens and the developing (??? If you can say that anything actually developes there.) relationship is inexplicable to me (and to the two MCs). First Cathal's all "My boss is hot and I've got the hots for him." Then it's "I love him" just a page or two later. Then it's back to "But I don't understand why I'm reacting this way, it's just physical, sexual attraction, I don't even know anything about him! It's not like I'm in love with him" in another couple of pages. So yeah, no internal consistency within the story.

Probably my favourite of the three I was putting off this one, because the second book didn't grab me as much as the first. However I was pleasently surprised by how much I enjoyed this one and I really liked how their relationship developed.

Hilton and Cathal had both had a lot of hardships in their life's, leading to a struggle with trust and held them back from their feelings for each other. It was lovely to see them finally get together and supporting each other.

The kids are great fun and I loved Herb as always he brings the laughs, it was an easy read and a lovely end to the series

I really liked Hilton and Cathal a lot. They were just awesome. The story had no real plot though, which I actually liked when I read it. Everything was smooth sailing. There were potential for some bad guys but nothing really happened with them.

This series is a sneak up on you love of mine. They've all been blog stories that I've just had to have! Bodyguards is no different. T A Chase is another auto buy for me.

By far the best one from this series, so far. (this is my humble opinion of course) Very much on the line of the Home Series.

Just love it and for sure, I will read it again.
