One of the most important conflicts of the second half of the 20th century, the Korean War defined the Cold War and provided a dress rehearsal for Vietnam ten years later. Tens of thousands of US soldiers and untold millions of Koreans died in this war - the first major arena of the East-West conflict. This narrative examines the social history of the conflict, and includes material on the newly racially integrated US fighting forces, war and disease, women and war and life in the Prisoner of War camps. While most surveys stop at 1953, with the signing of the armistice, Steven Hugh Lee carries the story through to the Geneva Conference in the spring of 1954 - the last major international effort before recent years to negotiate a permanent peace for the Korean peninsula.

Il conflitto che tra il 1950 ed il 1952 insanguinò la penisola coreana costituisce la genesi di quella che per decenni fu definita “guerra fredda”.
Fu una guerra che ebbe conseguenze globali: l’entrata della Germania nella NATO, l’emergere della Cina sulla scena mondiale, l’avvio della corsa agli armamenti, il trattato di pace con il Giappone, i riflessi su quella che negli anni successivi fu la guerra del Vietnam.
Uno scenario bellico e politico diplomatico in cui, per la prima volta nella storia umana, era presente l’arma nucleare come sistema d’arma di cui si poteva fare un uso “ragionato e razionale”… tanto è vero che gli strateghi statunitensi più volte valutarono tale opzione.
Un testo da leggere, che ci permette di comprendere al meglio le origini del l’attuale situazione politico militare nella penisola coreana.

Ho scelto questo libro per un esame universitario di storia delle relazioni internazionali. Partendo da un interesse di base la lettura è stata molto facile e interessante. Gli eventi vengono spiegati con attenzione, ma senza eccedere con le informazioni, rendendo così il libro molto scorrevole.
Lo consiglio a chiunque sia interessato a comprendere la storia delle (ormai) due nazioni ma non solo. Conoscere la storia è sempre importante per ampliare le proprie vedute sul mondo.

Tre stelle? Quattro? Non sono un'appassionata di storia ma il libro non mi è affatto dispiaciuto, è scorrevole e comprensibile, non si dilunga troppo in minuzie e affronta anche temi più sociali (la guerra e le donne, il razzismo, le malattie), oltre ai classici cause/svolgimento/conseguenze.
Un libro che son contenta di aver comprato.
